The Last Stand

I head really low low expectations, but it was alright. Kind of makes me want to watch T2 again.

Wanted to get some USA feels and '80s nostalgia, so I rented MIAMI VICE. Michael Mann brings just the right amount of what made Miami Vice great in its day, and applies more of what he's learned since that era. Jamie Foxx was flawless, and Colin Farrell was alright. If there's anything I could complain about, it's the weird, "Everyone wants to get with the Asian chick" vibe that goes throughout the film I mean, basically everyone loses their professional perspective at some point because they're all bonkers to get with a very cold, very severe-looking Asian mob accountant. I mean, Gong Li killed it. She was very good. But I just don't see why #1 baddie, #2 baddie, and Crockett ALL had to have a thing for her.

Another part that bothered me was some continuity stuff: In one scene, prior to meeting a major player, Sonny and Rico are frisked for weapons, but not two minutes later, Sonny produces a hand grenade. I guess he had it in his underpants, and the frisker mistook it for his brass balls.

After that, I realized I shouldn't take the continuity too seriously, but there's a whole bit in the climax where the Miami/Dade Police Department appear to have TRANSPORTER TECHNOLOGY, because they're in the middle of a very fast boat journey in one scene, racing toward a deal and then, BAM, they're infiltrating a trailer park, outfitted with SWAT kit.

It is, all in all, a fun movie with a lot of suspense. Several UK citizens people play Americans, which is always a little weird for me, but then Naomie Harris gets in a shower with Jamie Foxx and I forgot about most of it.

Its a real 3/5 movie for me. Sorry for the short comment but that's what the movie deserves. I expected more from Mann, but after that Johny Depp flick I just think Heat was his shining moment (and jeebus who can say that the best movie of the last xx years is something bad?)

Collateral was better than Vice; it is a good portrait of Los Angeles, both the grit and the shabbiness really come through in it.

saw Thief (with motherlovin James Caan) before it expired on Netflix too long ago, and even though its Mann's first film, its like the whole blueprint for his entire career was already set in stone for him.  Its an excellent film BTW, but what's surprising about it is just how little he's changed over time.  The Keep, Manhunter, and Last of the Mohicans are the outliers, Thief falls in damn near perfectly with any of his other crime stories.

and how did Mann make the digital video look so good in Collateral but so shitty in Miami Vice (and to a lesser extant, Public Enemies).  When a guy has been that ace for so long it becomes suspect when certain elements of his films begin to falter

Spring Breakers

What did I just watch. Some good visuals, some neat music. Lots of boring repetition, I mean lots. Few ok lines.

Still better then Tree of Life though.

Maybe if the movie had twice the plot it would have been great.

There's so much missing in this movie. Also they seem to insist to repeating every line twice.

Maybe if I was 15 the whole tits and ass angle would have made up for it, but then again  I was raised on Wild Things which is way beyond this and a pretty similar topic.

I just saw A Dangerous Method, featuring Michael Fassbender, Viggo Mortensen, and Keira Knightley. It was directed by Cronenberg, but I'd never have guessed it from the film's style.

I was surprised to see how far Keira can distort her face, in the throes of psychological pain. I was also surprised how plain and unattractive she tried to make herself for a role which featured such complex sexuality. And by complex, I should say "uncomfortable." Even with the effort to reign in her fey features, it is a mystery then why nudity is so frequently and casually featured. My only guess is that this disconnect is intentional, and likely the one mildly transgressive element Cronenberg snuck in.

in part it was because the woman Knightley was playing was said to be very plain looking, and she thought of herself that way, as well.

Looks pretty close to Ultimate Electro to me, which is the entire angle they're treating Amazing with.  I mean, we weren't in a million years going to get Classic Electro.  He's one of the stupidest looking villains in Spidey's regular gallery.

Once I turned off my fanboy switch, I semi-enjoyed ASM.  My biggest worry here is that it's going to collapse under the weight of too many characters, not that Jamie Foxx isn't wearing a giant yellow starfish mask.

Right now I see two outcomes:  by some miracle it wrangles in all its characters and works, or it's going to be a colossal mess.  But a mess can still be very entertaining.  At least it doesn't sound boring.

and the lighting bolt on Electro's sleeve should be a gatorade logo.  Missed opportunity.

Oldboy remake is so stupid, the original is already such a classic that can be viewed by anyone.

This is a stupid line of thinking.

Yojimbo was a classic.

It was remade into A Fistful of Dollars, which is equally a classic.

The problem isn't the fact they're remaking Oldboy for western audiences. The problem is that Spike Lee is a fucking hack.

Yojimbo was a samurai movie made into a totally different genre.  Oldboy is a crime drama with asians made into a crime drama with white people.  It's wholly unnecessary no matter the director.

Technically, Yojimbo isn't a samurai movie. There's only one samurai character (who is actually a wandering samurai) and the movie feels very western to begin with. One of Yojimbo's most striking features is its western film influenced cinematography. Then you have the fact that Yojimbo is a lone man in a desert town full of crooks and thieves, which is a very common western trope. Those two films aren't as dissimilar as you think.

To me, Yojimbo went from slightly western in Yojimbo to definitely a western in Dollars.

I think it's more than possible to make a good Oldboy remake. This one just isn't it.

There's just no need for it.  At all.  Leone saw Yojimbo and translated that to a completely different setting and genre palatable to American audiences.  No one was ever going to pay attention to Yojimbo, but hey a western, sure why not.  Oldboy is an ultraviolent revenge thriller set in modern times.  It doesn't really work otherwise and the base for the original has already seen it.  Plus the movie is famous for a few scenes in particular (octopus, the hammer) that either have to be simply copied or obliterated, so yeah, totally unnecessary.

fun new genre?  the rise of the Chinese Western usually centering around the 1930s or 1940s (Guns N Roses, An Innaccurate Memoir)

in that case, yes.  I'd agree.  But Kurosawa was pulling HEAVILY from Westerns already for his Samurai films which turned into a feedback loop because American (and Italian and uh Swedish filmmakers) began to take from Samurai films.
