I've been doing a lot of netflixing since I got hurt and this was a random choice I made, I was totally unprepared for the experience I was about to witness.  Truly an amazing movie with digital effects that are on a new level.  it's about a young gaijin who lives in Tokyo that has an interest in DMT and got himself into the position where he's one of those drug dealers who doesn't think they're a dealer, his occupation leads to him being killed and the rest of the movie is about what we experience after death, going through his past and future.  this has to be one of the most accurate and vivid displays of what tripping is like on film.  and don't think it's a movie just for druggies because it isn't, it's a work of art.  HIGHLY recommended and definitely has a place in my top ten.

A Japanese remake of Unforgiven is not something I ever expected to see. I'll watch it, though, sure.

movie day!

End of Watch

decent little cop movie. trailers are misleading as they paint the plot in a different light as it actually is in the movie. Lots of slow character building between the two leads. Problem is, it's pretty hamfisted and cheesy. There's some good moments, specifically with Jake Gyllenhaal and Anna Kendrick. The way these two cops seem to continuously stumble on bad stuff is pretty funny. As I mentioned, the trailers portray the events in weird orders so the way you think it plays out is not actually the way it does. Overall it's predictable but enjoyable for the most part. 3/5

Doomsday Book

a weird korean anthology comprised of 3 short stories all having to do with the destruction of humanity. It's pretty cool. Each of the three stories have their own merit. It's got some funny bits to it as well. I dunno, don't really have much else to say about it.

REC3 Genesis

This movie! The events of the original REC continue to be expanded as we see more places affected by the demonic infection. I love that the movie scrapped the found footage concept and I LOVE the way it scrapped. It starts out just like the previous 2 movies with a dude filming everything and at one point it makes a transition, it's an awesome transition. Don't wanna spoil it. From there we get a really well made Zombie flick that has an actually story being told inside. The events of the movie take place at the wedding of Koldo and Clara. During the outbreak they get separated and over the course of the movie, they attempt to reunite. It's simple and straight forward, but it's still SOMETHING. It's not just "WE HAVE TO GET OUT!". It's a thing to hold on to as you watch the movie. They do a pretty good job at building the relationship of the two leads so when you watch them attempt to get back together, it has meaning and substance. Now, it's not all serious. There's a subtle thread of humour throughout. It's not laugh out loud but it's some of the situations that they present are pretty funny. I also enjoyed the fact that the character of Clara, a female obviously, isn't made into a damsel. Sure Koldo is trying to "save" her, but it's because she's his wife. It's natural for him to want to find her. On the flip side though, Clara is actively attempting to find Koldo. She also has a few triumphant hero moments to boot.

The REC series is unique in one aspect because the zombies in the films are not generic undead. They are actually "demonic" in nature and all spawn from a possessed source that started the "infection". This movie keeps that and event adds another layer to it. It gives the movies something fresh about them and even uses that idea as a means of providing our heroes reprieve.

I really enjoyed REC3. I really enjoyed all three of these movies. They're smart when they need to and dumb when they need to. This movie was more dumb, but it worked for the tone and style they are going for.

Alright. I just wanna take a second here and say that the actress that played Clara is goddamn beautiful. Straight up, it's unbelievable how amazing she looks. This is one of those situations where a guy see's a chick and takes a for a moment, can't really think of anything else.

Silent Hill: Revelations

I was prepared to see an awful movie, but the Silent Hill fan in me had to check it out when I saw it on netflix.

Was worse than could have imagined.  Not even so bad it's good, just boring and stupid.  All the acting was terrible and they took the worst plot in the franchise and got rid of even the decent parts of its' story

Everything was terrible, everything was pointless and now they're going to do a messed up version of SH2's story next it seems.

Ugh, no more SH movies plz

What a turd. The whole plot is inane. The acting oh man. I like SoA and all but I've never watched it and thought "You know what? That Charlie Hunnam really has the chops to be a leading man." I feel bad because I spent an hour with Del Toro a couple of years back and he's a really nice guy and doesn't deserve the bad luck he's had getting things off the ground recently, but he really fucked up with this one.

Out of curiosity, what were you expecting?  The trailers made it look like an indie quirky coming of age/romance comedy in the tune of Adventureland.  Looked good.

Ha ha, thanks for that! I was trying to remember where I had seen that guy's face before. I have only seen three  or four episodes of SoA.

I'm still hoping you're wrong about the movie. It hasn't opened here yet, but the promotional push has started.

Reading the not so positive reactions to The Wolverine helped me realize that Hugh Jackman played Wolverine in 7 movies (in ~13 years).  At what point does wolverine get recast? it's not a Bond role where he can sagging around in his late 50s, Moore-style.  I don't know if Jackman is as important to the character as Tony Stark is to Robert Downey Jr.

in retrospect it's amazing how well Iron Man worked.  generally these comic movies are like supplemental to my existing opinion of the characters ("batman's finally batman in a movie!").  but I wasn't into Iron Man until the movie, part RDJ and part how cool the suit was.  so yeah, Iron Man the character is defined by the movies for me.  The Tony Stark I like most isn't a drunk  :'(

DAYS OF FUTURE PAST TRAILER WHERE ARE YOUUUUUUUU

They're probably going to have to hit the reboot button on the whole thing at some point, and then they'll probably recast Wolverine.  They have a lot of leeway though, because Wolverine kind of looks like a middle-aged sack of shit in the comics.  In light of some of the casting since X-Men, Jackman is probably not as integral to the character as a few others are to theirs, but I still remember at the time how amazed I was at how well they nailed his casting.  He *is* Wolverine for the masses as far as live action goes, so they're going to be slower than the norm to replace him.  That's one of the problems with maskless superheroes, haha.

One theory I read about The Wolverine is that the plot deliberately ages him a bit so Jackman can keep playing him, lol. Wouldn't be such a bad idea.

No, please no. I need The Wolverine to be good. :(

I dunno, there are five reviews up on RT, and only one is negative.  They all seem to agree the movie is way too fucking srs bzns though, which is what I was afraid of.

Would rather have serious bsns Wolvy than the fucking B&R inspired snorefest that was Origins, lol.

Wonder how the movie would have turned out if Aaronofsky had stayed on.

RDJ was one of those once-in-a-lifetime strokes of luck.  I'm a huge Iron Man fan from way back and he was a dream pick I didn't think had a shot in hell of ever being cast.

Replacing him is going to suck so so bad, Wrath.  We'll either have some fool trying to imitate RDJ or someone not being Tony Stark at all.  Pretty sure Iron Man as a franchise will die with RDJ exiting the role.

Tony Stark won't be replaceable for a long while.  RDJ signed on for Avengers 2 and 3, so assuming that's until 2017/2018.  As of now he's not signed on for anymore Iron Man movies.

Either RDJ is holding out for even more money or is done with Iron Man outside Avengers.  And as you say, he can be replaced by another character in a suit, or Rhodes.  Maybe in Avengers 3 Thanos will use the infinity gauntlet to change reality and turn RDJ into...honestly can't think of an actor that isn't already in a comic movie to finish this thought.

I don't think Aaronofsky would have liked working for a studio as intrusive as Fox. It was a long shot anyway.

He and Jackman are like best pals and it sounded like he was just about to do it but pulled out at the last second because of the lengthy shooting time in Japan.

Oh, what could have been...

I'm enjoying all the early hype for Wolverine in Japan. This country loves Jackman; he seems kind and thoughtful, he's game to play nicely with the local interviewers and announcers, and the ladies alllllll die for him. Sanada has been on the news to talk about how open the staff were about correcting things in the comic and script which were inaccurate about Japan, but also that the "Japan" shown is intentionally a Hollywood version of the country.

Tom Cruise was a choice for him in IM1 and he'd probably be just old enough at this point to somewhat competently do a job that in no way manages to live up to RDJ.

Xmen first class had my favorite balance...ignoring the scenes without the adults.  It kept it light or serious when appropriate.  Other movies lean too heavily in either jokey or serious.  So when someone cracks a joke in Man of Steel, it's awkward, just like acting as if there are any threats or stakes in Avengers.

has this comic movie talk gone on way too long? this might help

It's the title of the Japanese book they're adapting the movie from. To me it sounds like when they appropriate an English phrase but it doesn't sound quite right. Kinda like that thing with the semicolon that Stumpokapowowow threw a fit about.

I mean, if they want to pervert the title and message of a song written by a guy who was shot to death that's cool but it should probably be for something more substantial than Hollywood's PG-13 follow-up to Jack Reacher and Oblivion.
