The Weinstein Company to remake two Shaw Brothers classics
Posted on July 24, 2013 by Mighty Peking Man

According to Variety, The Weinstein Company has a deal with Celestial Pictures to remake two Shaw Brothers martial arts classics: 1966′s Come Drink With Me and 1978′s Avenging Eagle.

John Fusco, writer of The Forbidden Kingdom and the upcoming Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon 2, will pen both movies. There are currently no directors or stars attached to either title.

If you’re a Shaw fan and your blood is already boiling, you better not continue reading… Celestial also says they’re in similar discussions with other A-list producers for remakes of other Shaw Brothers titles.
- See more at: http://www.cityonfire.com/the-weinstein-company-to-remake-shaw-brothers-classics/#sthash.27CzfBXv.dpuf

i don't really feel too terrible about this. i mean it's probably meant as part of their china push moreso than these being made for american audiences. it's weird that they're getting fusco to write these, but i guess he's just a known quantity for them.  it's not like Forbidden Kingdom was horrible.

Evil Dead (2013)

As a fan of ED2 & Army of Darkness, and not so much a fan of ED1 (it's "ok") and not a fan of modern torture porn horror, I was so ready to hate on this modern remake of Sam Raimi's original.

But...it was really fun!  Like it's not scary or mean spirited at all; yeah it's more gorey and more realistic looking, but it's still really silly and ridiculous and funhouse-like.  I haven't seen ED1 since I was a teenager some odd 12+ years ago, but from what I remember this is surprisingly faithful.  All the memorable scenes and lines are here and they just shuffle things around a bit to keep you on your toes and keep it interesting.  But in spirit all the stuff from ED1 is there with the camp and badassness still intact.  Works for both newcomers because it's a good fun movie and for series fans because it does such a faithful job while mixing it up and being very solidly put together.  I really had a good time!

Two Necronomicons up!

Secretly Greatly,
I missed this at the NYAFF so I was happy to see it open for a very short run in NYC.

It's the tale of two north korean agents who are sent to infiltrate a town and await further orders.  One's cover story is town idiot, the other is rocker.  You think it's going to be a fish out of water story but it doesn't really develop that too much, instead focusing on the plot of the north korean government decides to put a stop to the mission and orders all the agents killed.  so it goes from a weird comedy to a spy drama into a super super intense melodrama broken up with fight scenes.

it really didn't work for me, but i saw it in a theater literally filled with koreans.  i was the only white person in the movie house and they laughed their assess off and at the end there were several people straight up bawling.  so it worked for the intended audience.

Thermae Romae - cute little time travel movie about a roman empire architect who gets sucked into modern japan and steals their bathing ideas for his own time.  it's based on a manga which i understand is more of a "history of baths" with a veneer of story to propel the whole thing forward, but this is a series of "fish out of water" vignettes.  It's a cute fantasy with some nice directorial flourishes.  the casting is for the most part quite good with ABE Hiroshi playing the main Roman character.  He's ambiguously ethnic enough to pass for Italian and he carries off the comedic parts quite well.

Worth a watch, I think.

A Hijacking

 :whoo

Such an intense film.  To some it might seem like a "greed over humanity" type of flick, but I didn't get that when I saw it.  I saw a parallel drawn between the harsh setting of a hijacked hip and the stressful, life-or-death decisions being made by a CEO who cares about his work force.  Great acting, especially by the folks on the ship.  And there are joyous moments too – even though they may be veiled under false joy.

Great flick, I recommend all of you check it out.

from what i've read it's a bit more than that.

she's basically dead inside, stuck in a relationship she doesn't like and a job she hates but can't escape from and her body begins to manifest outwardly what was previously just inside.

This is the review which put the film on my radar: http://www.theconduitspeaks.com/2012/11/thanatomorphose-review.html

And here's a recent review
http://unseenfilms.blogspot.com/2013/07/thanatomorphose-2012-fantasia-2013.html

both links contain still images from the film which are probably gross

Warm Bodies

Wow, it only took me until I was 30, but I've finally outgrown the teenage sappy chick flick romance movie (tbf, it's probably been a decade since I've even watched a teen-aimed chick flick, so I was probably over it once I was not a teen).  Even though it had zombies and a new take on them and I like zombies and new takes on them, the movie was soooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooo 13 year old girl-aimed it was hard to get through.  SO HAPPY and full of terrible teen acting and cheesy romance stuff and it was kind of really boring.  It's one of those totally safe productions that are ok when you're a kid and don't expect better, but yeah as an adult safe = dull.  It's compentently made outside the C- acting that makes it feel like a TV movie, but yeah, didn't care for it that much.

Most Xmen do, but most mutants don't have awesome destructive powers so a sentinel can easily rape a guy with a fishhead for example.
