That said, since it's a Snyder film, I doubt the grimdark Batman is either subtle or interesting.

Incredibly dope movie. The characters, mood, mind battling, mind reading, it all comes together without feeling hokey. On paper, the plot and overall story sounds incredibly dopey and cheesy, but the execution was top notch. Tons of tension and horror with almost every scene.

Speaking of trailers, the trailer for Jungle Book actually looked good. I think they pulled it off.
For a minute I confused The Jungle Book with Tarzan and thought "No fucking way"

it hasn't really entered the idea of the character on a larger scale till the Nolan movies took off like they did.

All those animated series had all kinds of weird violence rules too. Like laser guns are okay, but not real guns. And I think it was Spider-Man where he couldn't punch anyone or something.

I think it's Batman where there's a scene where it's like ten times as horrible because they can't show what's happening.

Those rules are due to kid show network rules not batman's inner morality.

I watched The Fly a few times last year. Remember seeing parts as a kid when my mom would watch it. It's definitely a favorite of mine after watching it in its entirety last year. Its a pretty depressing and horrifying movie, but when Jeff Goldblum or his double starts to do gymnastics in front of Geena Davis (jumping on a pipe and doing multiple 360s and leaps), I bust out laughing.

I also watched History of Violence last year, which Cronenberg directed and that surprised me. History of Violence is a really okay/average movie to me, it felt incredibly hokey and corny. Was surprised to find out its one of Cronenberg's best reviewed movies and its apparently loved by a lot of people.

People on GAF who have seen the movie confirmed he's mostly got it right other than maybe a few minor details or order of events. Likely due to time from seeing it to time writing the post.

I liked Zootopia. It's nothing amazing but they did manage to get some social commentary on racism and profiling into the movie. The most important thing for me was that it was a kid's movie that didn't insult my intelligence or make me want to blow my brains out. Whenever we take our daughter to a movie, about 90% of the trailers for upcoming animated stuff looks absolutely terrible and I won't be taking my kid to see them.
That's how I generally feel as well. I mean, seriously, why even give the movie a theatrical release if you can't reasonably ask adults to sit through it? That' how the Doraemon and Anpanman stuff over here makes me feel. OTOH, I'd re-watch Kung-Fu Panda 3 here with my son, because it was surprisingly good.

We've been pretty fortunate with Addie so far. She likes Ghibli, Pixar and the big budget Disney films, but is completely uninterested in all the direct to video Tinkerbell crap. We've taken her to three films in the theater: Inside Out, Peanuts and Zootopia. All were enjoyable.

She'd probably love all the terrible stuff we see trailers for, but Em and I aren't taking her. Sorry kid, your parents just won't subject themselves to all the Ice Age and Dreamworks smirk movies.

The No Kill rule (or something close to it) is kinda necessary to explain why a vengeful, obsessive vigilante with billions of dollars and access to cutting-edge technology doesn't just turn Gotham into an abattoir.

Don't really remember (only one I ever rewatched was BB, one time), but I think it was generally recklessness that would cause collateral deaths, or self-defense type stuff.  The Burton movies were just goofy and nonsensical.

The point is that he has to have some level of aversion to killing or guns if you want him lurking around and punching people.  The Punisher's moral code with Bruce Wayne's resources and OCD would give you a Batman who's killing hundreds of people a day with his private air force of semi-automated Batdrones.

It's a Zach Snyder film. Of course it sucks. He peaked at the very start with the Dawn of the Dead remake, which was not even spectacular, just solid. It's all been downhill from there, culminating with Man of Steel, which was a joyless experience. After that I knew what to expect. What a waste.  :(

Quote
It says a lot of very depressing things about our world right now that this astonishingly dumb film has real-life parallels. Batman V Superman: Dawn Of Justice is the story of a self-important billionaire with a casual attitude to the truth, who becomes paranoid about a segment of the immigrant population. He decides to take brutal and - as it happens - entirely unjustified and even self-endangering action against that immigrant, to the benefit of a rich psychopath who wants to distract everyone from their own nefarious grasp at power.

We cannot, however, credit this as satire.

Goofy and loveable Clark Kent is almost entirely absent, and when he is onscreen he’s every bit as stern and unforgiving as this Superman, berating Laurence Fishburne’s fun Perry White and failing to turn in copy on time (he has no excuse. He can type at super-speed).

I can't imagine this thing bombs though, it's gotta do $1 billion easy.

That'll give Snyder and Terrio their $250 million to do Justice League and Affleck $150-200 million to do Batfleck and then they can all bail the fuck out as Warner quietly gets Johns and whoever to reboot the whole thing with some kind of coherent plan like Kevin Feige had before they have to start paying for Shazam, Aquaman and Cyborg. If Wonder Woman is a disaster, that will really speed things up.

I still want to see Goyer's script. And Orci's for Star Trek Beyond.

The last decade has seen some pretty shaky Cronenberg movies, but his output during the 80's and into the 90's is above reproach.

Batman forever was great.

:donot

I was bent out of shape when I left the theater for Batman & Robin but I'm really more mellow on it now. It's still total trash, don't get me wrong, but there's genuine work there in the miniatures and locations (it's super gaudy, tho... Nolan did keep the giant statues and floating railways for Batman Begins) and I can see that they're trying to recapture the 60's show style with 90's wrapping. Some of the goofiness works and it's sometimes fascinating to see an insane budget being pissed away like that.

I am more meh on Forever, Schumacher is still having the brakes on and Carrey is downright terrible in it.

Best Batman film is probably the Adam West one or Returns, yeah. Lee Meriwether as Catwoman (or Mrs. Kit Kat :lol) is :lawd and honestly as far as characters go most modern screen depictions are tied with the series. Nicholson obviously is doing a Romero impression. Michael Gough is also pretty close. Burgess Meredith as the Penguin and Gorshin as the Riddler are still the best as far as live actors go.
