the assassin was my fav film from last year (tho it only arrived in cinemas here this year, aka movie of the year two years in a row :bow2)

Hou Hsiao Hsien doesn't really have anything meaningful in common with Tsui Hark or Wong Kar Wai tho, Tsai Ming-liang is a better comparison.

I know HHH is pretty far removed from WKW or HK cinemas (acronyms yeah) but it's give a frame of reference to where I am coming from. As I said with Millenium Mambo, I might just not be receptive at all on top of the rest so...

Gods and Monsters is great Tasty Meat. Only downside is it moves a little fast but all these DCU animated stuff tend to.

I saw some casting announcements for a 'New Mutants' movie .... why? That was created back when I used to collect comics and it was horribly dull with a bunch of unmemorable heroes in it.

Justice League: Gods and Monsters

Yeah, this was a nice, self-contained little story. I sympathize with Dandy in that I would have also preferred another DCU continuity movie, but this very much felt like a more mature Timm/Dini cartoon. In fact, because of the art style and subject matter, one could be forgiven for thinking this was an elaborate extension of the JLU episode "A Better World."

Something is up with DC and alternate worlds though: since they get to kill people, they fucking go HAM and kill people in the most absurd and violent ways possible. Not gonna lie, I felt a little whiplash at the crazy violence. Not that the movie is pretending to be for kids at all, but I dunno, it's just not what I look for in these movies. My guess is that because of the strict no-kill rule in the main DCU, the writers jump at any chance for upping the violence. That's my theory anyways.

What I liked most is that the plot kept you guessing, unlike the past couple DCU movies where you can pretty much guess the story beats after the first 15 minutes. Crippled Lex Luthor was awesome too. Not sure who I'd recommend this to, but if you like the JLU episode A Better World you'll probably love this movie.

Also who the fuck is Terrio? Heared some DC fegs act like he's jesus right before reviews started hitting.

He won an Oscar for adapting Argo. That's it. Before that, he wrote and directed an episode of Damages and some smaller movies.

Yeah Terrio was supposed to be their savior and BvS would get 80%+ on RT because he wrote Argo and rewrote BvS's script to get the "stink" of Goyer off it.

Unfortunately this narrative died in its crib as soon as the reviews started hitting. :lol

Holy shit Interstellar is bad.  I blame TVC for telling me it was bad, but not telling just how bad it was.

I really enjoyed it. What parts of it didn't you like?
Too long, the music was bad (and so loud it drowned out conversations), the plot was new age garbage despite the movie opening with a serious discussion about being scientific, Anne Hatahaway makes a dumb scientist if she's going on about the metaphysics of love, Matt Damon as the bad guy was dumb, I hated the fau-Americana opening and all the dumb speeches about where humanity was supposed to headed, why didn't McConaughey just tell his daughter what was up.  It was just a mess and Nolan seriously needs someone to rein in his grandiose tendencies.  I guess the cube robot and some of the visuals were cool.

BvS AKA Martha Martha MARTHA

I liked it it.  It was dumb.  The writing was god awful as were the cuts.

spoiler (click to show/hide)
The idea of the plot was OK other than the whole martha thing (who calls there mom by name, and then they had to repeat it a 1000 times - no subtlety) but very poorly executed.  Lex killed Mercy?  WTF.  Will we get robo mercy?  I like batman and wonderwoman.  I look forward to their movies now more than I did.  The darkseid dream/flash shit was dumb.
[close]

6/10, hopefully the cuts can be fixed in the directors cut.  They couldn't really capture the marvel team up feel and I think that is mostly due to 1) having the best shots in their trailer 2) them not having single movies first.

Man, I hate having to do this, but I gotta pan Hardcore Henry, which is creative and tedious in almost equal measure. No other movie has ever more closely embraced video game tropes and narrative techniques, not even those directly based on video games themselves. It smartly presents a varied set of environments and a sort of episodic (or stage based, if you will) progression for which its well executed mayhem may occur in, and then shoots all those positives to hell with muddy and indistinct cinematography. The thing of it is, I'm pretty sure the whole FPS-as-movie thing could work (Strange Days has those incredible first person sequences, dont it), it just doesn't work for this movie, which strains to be fun and violent, but just comes off as nihilistic and mean more often. And the whole thing usually lacks visual clarity, which is something that even the ridiculous and chaos filled videogames this is meant to emulate do a better job of, and they usually have better stories to tell. Seriously, we're talking sub-Quantum Theory/Inversion/Vanquish story telling here.

I struggle to remember any other movie I've disliked that made say 'Wow' quite as much, but that just makes the whole rest of this otherwise underwhelming movie even more frustrating. You guys might like it better then me, and I'd place a wager that this will play much better at home then in the theater, where its lower-resolution(shoulda gone for performance and not effects) and underlit look won't matter as much, and its awesome stuntwork will shine brighter.

I watched that a few days ago and I totally loved it's take. For one it had the best Batman origin story ever and it just kept a fantastical tone to everything for the whole movie, plus Batman is presented as antisocial self-centered billionaire like I always wanted him to be. The writing was okay since it was going for cheese, rather stupid worthless gritty bullshit like the Nolan movies as though I need to be able to suspend my disbelief in order to cheer for some caped douchenozzles. As for your complaint:

spoiler (click to show/hide)
Supes was obviously pleading with Batman to go save Martha as he figured he was going to die and so that would be her only chance.

Honorable mentions for WW slice and dice skills and Michael Ironside for just being manly old man as fuck. It's very fun and at least a great movie to discuss with others but I dunno if I would ever rewatch it as the first half does drag a bit before getting interesting.

I finally saw Batman vs. Superman a couple days ago, and I've been digesting the experience. I was prepared to cut Snyder some slack for having to shoehorn in a bunch of new characters to set up the rest of the Justice League, but honestly that part was done well and for the most part unobtrusively.

Overall, the movie is a godawful piece of shit. Even little things like the score (offensively aggro, thanks a lot Hans Zimmer and JunkieXL) and just how the heroes look in their costumes is fucked up. Seriously, it looks like someone with a severe action figure fetish greenlit the costumes, and considering that the entire movie is basically a set-up for a child's action figure battle at the end. It's like someone let Chris Farley's old SNL character that would interview people and go, "remember when you did that? that was cool" direct a movie.

Oh wait, it's EXACTLY like that. Zack Snyder is a no talent piece of shit.

Even with any MOAR HUMOR reshoots, Suicide Squad is going to turn out great and make way more bank than it cost vs BvS and Warner is going to be completely lost as fuck as what the hell they should do with the DCEU. (Other than the obvious, let Snyder finish out his trilogy with Justice League since he's bailing out after it anyway, and use the Batfleck movie to do him and Leto and lead into Justice League II as the reboot because old-Bats time travel Flashpoint gibberish punching walls of reality blah blah blah now they're all young and quippy and the SERIOUS SCENE ALERT is only at an 8, not a 15. The one thing I've never been able to figure out in my fantasy is who plays Ted Kord. Someone on another forum (maybe GAF) suggested the lead from How I Met Your Mother.

Similar issues have held back my Grant Morrison's Doom Patrol film casting that Warner requested. Especially for the villains.

Gonna feel vindicated when SS drops and ppl love Leto Joker. Gonna be all "i told you adhd internet niccas."

Side note I still think DC's lane needs to just go all the way anti Marvel stuff like Suicide Squad. DC has a lot of wierd shit, build on that, push that. Stop trying to just "What Marvel does/did but DC!" Fuck a flash movie, do a blue beetle movie, resurrect that Justice League Dark shit etc.

Honestly didn't understood the immediate pushback about Leto either. I mean "the Joker" is a pretty versatile role you can take in a lot of directions.

Otherwise I'd agree the smart move would maybe be to offer something different than the Marvel experience which has evolved into its own sort of vanilla. But I guess it's hard to argue for that for volative 500m investments...

Edit: then again, Snyder was already some bet on having an edgier aesthetic and tone.

One thing that hurt LetoJoker was that they put out those images first, in which he was shirtless and looked wacky, which led to all kinds of speculation about how it was going way off the reservation. Especially because for a lot of people The Joker is now The Dark Knight's version. There wasn't any hint of how he was actually playing the character until the Comic-Con trailer and that was limited to the last ten seconds of it.

The two trailers since have shown him as much more of what you expect from The Joker traditionally and that he's not really playing it all that out there or weird. Even his outfits are what you expect from The Joker (an in-universe version of his classic purple suits, etc.) and it seems his shirtless thing is just one torture scene.

The trailers have done a lot to quiet the Harley complaints too. There were a ton of those as well, but other than the accent (which might just be because Robbie can't do it), and continued complaints about her outfits, it's seeming like basically Harley as we know her.

Hell, they've even done a lot for the Will Smith/Deadshot complaints as he doesn't seem to be dominating the film significantly more than the character (as the most prominent Suicide Squad member) warrants.

The one thing that hasn't hurt is that the trailers still look like Ayer approached this as a kind of ensemble action film first and then fit the Suicide Squad/DC characters into it. Which is how some of Marvel's better films have come about. BvS was way more like checking off the DC boxes first and then fitting it together as a film.

I'd really hate to be wrong though. I know I shouldn't get my hopes up off trailers after Age of Ultron's bait and switch.

One of the things I'm hoping comes out of Deadpool is not a glut of R-rated comic films but instead the realization that you can make a good comic film for under $80+ million and with smaller scales so you can plumb those lower tier/lesser known franchises with not too much worry by bringing in people who really want to do the films. (Like Ryan Reynolds.)

Ant-Man is another decent example, it was the cheapest Marvel movie to date at $130 million (!) and had production issues, and still made half a billion and has 80% RT.

Warner hasn't done a mainstream DC film for under $185 million since Batman Begins. (Watchmen was $130 million.) Fucking Green Lantern was $200 million. Probably shouldn't rule out that they're budgeting Aquaman, Shazam and CYBORG at $150-250 million. And Justice League at $300+ million. :lol

I thought Justice League Dark was one of the more promising films they announced, before quietly shelving it with del Toro slipping off it. That seems like the kind of film with an "unknown" franchise that can rope in outsiders with the proper production and style like Guardians of the Galaxy. (They've kinda fallen backwards into it with Suicide Squad by accident.) But Warner seems almost afraid to do something like that, even on a lower budget, whereas Marvel dropped $200 million into GOTG.

Probably doesn't apply to Suicide Squad with Smith and Leto on board, they probably got paid more than the CGI budget.

You won't take my irrational hype for Suicide Squad away from me, WRATH. You can't! It's too strong! There are too many facts!

You can't.

You can't...it'll be the best DC movie since Constantine.
