I like the look of the new Godzilla. He looks scary and I think the big tail is frightening and creepy. He also looks like he's going nucular and given recent events in Japan I'm sure that's the point. No doubt this movie will have been inspired by Japan's recent disasters.

My problem with Japanese cinema is beyond it always looking cheap is that it stages and present's itself (well to an American) so unnaturally. Big budget Japanese movies at least always feel like they are emulating anime. Emoting like anime characters and just in general the acting being bad from a western perspective.

Through the trailer didn't have that style of posing and was serious, so I'm somewhat optimistic.

As for the GiTS movie. ScarJo isn't  a bad choice. She's actually good at playing cold and somewhat emotionless characters. Which would fit The Major from the first movie. So if this was a movie based on the first anime movie, I'd say it's good casting besides the whole she's not Asian thing. But I just fear that it's going to be a generic sci-fi action movie. Which is a shame, because I don't think GiTS is generic. Sure the first movie can veer into philosophy wankery, but it still attempts to hit on some solid themes and the tone and atmosphere of that movie is a bit more serious and thought provoking then a generic action movie. The tv shows also really work as solid police procedural with 2nd gig being a really good political thriller.

It would be a shame if the Live Action movie had nothing to say as right now is the perfect time to make a story about how our world is so connected to technology and what that could mean about being human.

GitS is one of my favorite property and I hope the Live Action movie is good if only so it puts a spotlight on it and other works.

Pretty much. Plus Fox probably made him a blank check in the hopes of having their own extended universe. He could probably film the whole thing with a camera attached to a pig intestine if he wanted.

"You are on Pandora!"

"See this scar? First day, I keep it to remind me of what's out there"

To be fair I only remember these because my friends and I made fun of the movie a lot. There was also a jewelry store called Pandora we would walk by all the time.

He had three major starring roles in 2009-2010 [Terminator Salvation, Avatar, and Clash of the Titans] and then he completely vanished, despite those movies making a combined total of $3.5 billion worldwide. That should really tell you all you need to know about his acting ability, or at least what everyone outside of James Cameron thinks about his acting ability.

I was right all along. People thought I meant Avatar wouldn't gross 250mil in dollars. In reality I meant it wouldn't gross 250mil in mindshare. The fact that no one remembers anything about it suggests that when you account for mind inflation it actually grossed around 107mil.

I do like the Bourne movies, but I really hate how they influenced action cinema to follow in their footsteps.

-I hate how it further legitimized the PG-13 rating for action movies, and for films for adults in general.
-I hate how Paul Greengrass became a vaunted action director, despite that he's terrible at it (only Ultimatum was competent), diverting his career away from dramatic liscense re-enactments sucks for us all (Bloody Sunday, Captain Phillips, United 93 are all superlative films).
-I hate how 'shaky cam' became a thing, and still is for reasons I don't understand.
-I hate how every installment has some of the best actors available, and doesn't give them much of anything to do except shout at underlings or die abruptly.

You know, I think I just talked myself out of liking the Bourne movies, think I'll go see whatever Bollywood flick is playing that week instead.

I remember the first Bourne being different compared to the sequels. Had a smaller and less crazy scale. (Which apparently the studio was unhappy with?)

Also good to know the CIA keeps all their important documents in folders titled "Black Ops" and "Black Sites" instead of something like "Father Mike Pictures."

Kiyoshi Kurasawa's latest is a bittersweet, gentile, lightweight but enjoyable romantic-ghost story about a women who's reconnecting with her dead but apparently okay anyway husband. Journey to the Shore well uses Kurasawa's superlative horror chops as its secret weapon, making the most of the strangeness of the relationship between the dead and the living husband and wife, but its not really a horror movie. There's lots of funny parts, but its not really a comedy. Is it about a widoweder's grieving process, a what-if story about an incomplete relationship made whole, a wistful non-horror bus still sometimes scary ghost story? I don't know what to call it exactly, but I did like it.

Aferim! is the funniest movie about slavery I've ever seen. A slice of life film about bawdy and endlessly profane Romanian constables hunting down an escaped gypsy slave, it painstakingly recreates the early 1800's of Eastern Europe, a place where a rich stew of humanity comes together and continually cusses each out. It feels like an accurate representation of the miserable lives that so many would have had to live back then (not just the Roma), but its a very entertaining film, playing out like a ye olde epysode of Cops. In stark black and white, it looks like an art film, but its not really anything else except a snapshot into a unheralded era of history, and a very lively one at that.

I finally saw Batman vs. Superman a couple days ago, and I've been digesting the experience. I was prepared to cut Snyder some slack for having to shoehorn in a bunch of new characters to set up the rest of the Justice League, but honestly that part was done well and for the most part unobtrusively.

Overall, the movie is a godawful piece of shit. Even little things like the score (offensively aggro, thanks a lot Hans Zimmer and JunkieXL) and just how the heroes look in their costumes is fucked up. Seriously, it looks like someone with a severe action figure fetish greenlit the costumes, and considering that the entire movie is basically a set-up for a child's action figure battle at the end. It's like someone let Chris Farley's old SNL character that would interview people and go, "remember when you did that? that was cool" direct a movie.

Oh wait, it's EXACTLY like that. Zack Snyder is a no talent piece of shit.

Ya the issues with the movie weren't universe-creating stuff, it was dialog and other core movie issues that made it a bad movie.

Watched Inherent Vice last night. Well, 2/3rd's of it before I gave up.

I'm a usually a fan of the ambiguous, the quirky and the incoherent, but this one didn't land for me at all. It was real disappointing because it wasn't the fault of the actors, it was all on the script/dialog and the directing. It wasn't even that interesting to look at, which is usually something you can fall back on when these types of movies don't hit their mark.
