I could see putting the trilogy as a whole on a top 10 from the past 20 years, but I don't know that I'd put more than maybe one of them on the list if I really started to break it down.

Also, if you want a good, small-scale, Bourne-esque action movie, go watch Haywire.

Eh, I like each of the Bournes more than Haywire (or pretty much any other similar action movie).

Fury Road and both The Raid movies though

I haven't seen any Bourne movies, but yesterday my 30 year old sister geeked the fuck out showing me the trailer and the various aspects of each movie ending with a rant as to why the one with Hawkeye sucked.

It was surreal.

Mostly because it sounded like when I talk about Metal Gear Solid.

I give the fourth a pass cause of Rachel Weisz (and the super tense lab scene), but yeah, pretty disappointing overall.

Yeah Spy is great. I remember on an early ep of the how did this get made podcast someone was on who had worked with Statham before and how he's actually pretty funny irl and how they wanted to see him doing more comedic stuff in film. Glad that it's actually happening.

Bourne was just a watershed series for the '00s.

I don't care if people want to put shakycam into their smugdumpster along with lensflash and autotune - the series pulled off unique that worked. I'd take that over any standard stunt-fight cuts.

Hush - Eh, it's well done little suspense horror thriller by the guy who did Oculus (haunted mirror) & Absentia (Cthulhu bridge troll) direct to Netflix. It's well directed (good tension) and acted, but cat & mouse home invasion 1 vs 1 has been done so in so many horror films it's just kind of "why bother" even if the lead being a deaf mute & the 2 characters hero/villian both being intelligent does give it a more interesting premise than normal. If you haven't seen a million of these, it's worth a watch. If you have seen a ton, it's just popcorn.

The Invitation - Suspense Mystery about a group of friends who receive an invitation to a strange dinner party from someone they haven't seen in 2 years. I really liked this for 3/4ths of the movie. It's well directed and acted and gives a great job creating a mysterious air and leaving the audience guessing if there or isn't there something going on. The last 1/4th payoff is ok, but too predictable to close out the film satisfyingly. It's a good movie, but it's one step away from a great one.

I was in it for Michael Shannon and the Southern family drama so that stuff was besides the point for me.

They whacked Cyclops in X-Men 3, because of Marsden going off with Singer to do Superman Returns. So when Singer returned for DOFP (originally planned to direct, but just produced), I thought Marsden was brought back but given a different role.

Anyway, yeah, now I know.

April and the Extraordinary World is just plain delightful, a Ghibli-lite, pretty dang French adventure film with a fun and well realized steampunk world powering it. Its not really a comedy, but there's a healthy amount of humor (biggest laugh would be at the halfway point where a character recaps the neigh-comically dense plot thus so far). Its not a romance, but there's some genuine sweetness between the protagonist coupling. It is a well executed and imagined old-timey sort of adventure story, the sort that have become all too rare in this age of every family film needing to have lots of irony and snark in it. It also has the best opening credits I've seen in a long time, and my favorite ending of this year so far, the film that they bookend is pretty dang good as well.

Playtime is just the ultimate example of a director using the movie as an excuse to create a giant playground and play around in it. All the other Monsieur Hulot movies are pretty great, too, though.

Speaking of Carpenter influences*, I got to see Green Room. Great thriller, plays out like Die Hard/Assault on Precinct 13 with skinhead punks instead of terrorists & Captain Picard going full Aryan-Heisenberg in the Hans Gruber role. It has an overwhelming sense of tension because it always feels like no one is safe, unlike a typical Hollywood movie. It was also nice to see Anton Yelchin getting work again, there's shades of Michael J. Fox in his performance here. Plus it secretly looks gorgeous. I saw the latest Linklater a few weeks back and even though I had a lot of fun with it, I felt visually it was very flat and it reminded me not to take good cinematography for granted.

Now I want to go back and watch Blue Ruin but it wasn't on Netflix anymore when I checked the other day. :-/

*For what it's worth, there's no overt aping of Carpenter's synth in the score here like It Follows or The Guest so don't get your hopes up for *that.*

American Ultra. Worth the 99¢ rental; I'd have been unhappy to pay more. Topher Grace is the standout performance here. Neat to see him play a bro'd-out yuppie asshole who is climbing the corporate ladder, except in the CIA. An enjoyable film with weird pacing problems and a disturbing ending that doesn't feel like it was intentional.

Bloodsport is a legit good movie, one of the better (if not the best) western "martial arts" flick. Has very good pacing for a Van Damme vehicle, very light on filler (overall much better than Kickboxer), cliché borderline racist but nonetheless effective participants in the tournament and the mood is somewhat genuine. That it's all based off the tall lies of a bullshit artist makes it even better.

Absolutely, hell, its one of the best films to come out of the schlock factory known as Cannon. And how, how did I forget to use the Bolo emote?

Heck, I think a lot of Van Damme's films have aged wonderfully. At the time it was easy to take his stuff for granted, as he really was a 2nd-tier action star (Schwartzenegger and Stallone beat him handily in prestige and acting ability). And a guy could even fairly scoff at the friggin great Hard Target for being a lesser film compared to the ones that John Woo was making until then in China (same with his collaborations with Hark Tsui and Ringo Lam). But holy crap, did he ever have a pretty solid run through the late 90's, putting out a healthy amount of gloriously stupid and fun B-movies. Even at his professional peak, he was still making movies that nobody could ever attempt to take seriously (thanks for Timecop JCVD), always with lots of well executed face kickings.
