Jeremy Irons minced no words in talking about the poor reviews for the Zack Snyder-helmed superhero smackdown, saying he found the less-than-glowing critical response to be warranted:

‘Deservedly so. I mean it took £800 million, so the kicking didn’t matter but it was sort of overstuffed…It was very muddled. I think the next one will be simpler. The script is certainly a lot smaller, it’s more linear.”

I thought High-Rise was just OK (3/5.) It's fairly slow and impenetrable, but has some great set design and acting.

I also thought Trumbo was just OK (3/5.) It's entertaining but sort of aimless. Louis CK is good in it though.

Haven't seen Creed or The Revenant either.

Yeah, Trumbo was interesting.  It's a good movie, made good almost entirely by Cranston's performance, but it should have easily been a great oscar-bait kind of movie.  The directing/script are weak and it feels like a collection of great individual scenes but it's never pulled together for a really tight great film.  I actually thought Louis CK was really bad, since standing side by side with Cranston's acting he feels out of place.

I've only seen Cranston in Breaking Bad = alright acting & Godzilla = awful acting, so I wasn't really sure if he was a great actor until Trumbo.  Dude can definitely pull off a great performance.  Makes me look forward to his new thing.

http://www.independent.co.uk/arts-entertainment/films/news/star-wars-spin-off-rogue-one-sent-for-expensive-reshoots-by-disney-a7057581.html

Expensive reshoots have reportedly been ordered for upcoming Star Wars spin-off movie Rogue One.

Disney executives were “not happy” with the first cut from director Gareth Edwards, according to a Hollywood source quoted by insider website Page Six.

However, the source said: “The execs at Disney are not happy with the movie and Rogue One will have to go back into four weeks of expensive reshoots in July. Gareth’s work on the first Godzilla [2014] shows he can handle a big studio blockbuster but Rogue One has fallen short of what JJ Abrams did with Star Wars: The Force Awakens. Disney won’t take a back seat and is demanding changes, as the movie isn’t testing well.”

That's really disappointing to hear, since I thought it looked like it could be pretty good based on that first trailer. Maybe the reshoots can turn it around, but this news has sharply deflated my hype for it.

First trailer is really good. I thought TFA was meh but this movie seems like it has the opportunity to do something a bit fresh, despite the setting (Vader is in it right?).

I still think Disney is going to run this franchise into the ground. While I will see Rogue One, perhaps in the theater, I see no reason why it's coming out a year after TFA. And apparently there will be a Han Solo movie and perhaps an Obi Wan movie as well? Ugh.

The trailer didn't do anything for me. Seems like it's going to be full of fanservice wankery that I don't really care for. Just more canon for fanboys to ejaculate on, vivisect endlessly, and stuff up their asses.

I'll still see it only for this badass

My whine about the trailer has been that if it takes place right before the original trilogy, I wish they tried to emulate the filming style and film stock  of the original movies. I know it's on some level irrational, but it would be nice if it visually slotted in with the original movies.

Also, I remember some really cringey lines in the trailer.

I watched Aronofsky's NOAH. The practical effects and set stuff was gorgeous, but the CG animals were distractingly unnatural. Russell Crowe had a difficult role to fill; Noah is largely an unsympathetic character, but he is effective as a lone, radicalized hermit with a cult-like family who follows his zealot-demands. I normally like Jennifer Connely, but she was "acting" in this movie, and it just stayed camped in my head.

There were plenty of interesting images, and many thought-provoking messages about family, institutions, religion, conservatism... but in the end it is somewhat muddled, overlong, and confusing.

I liked it, I'll watch it again someday, but I'm in no rush.

Rogue One looks fresh.

TFA stuck too close to the originals but I get why. They had to reinvent Star Wars for 2015 without alienating existing fans.

TFA checked off everything you'd expect in a Star Wars movie and did a good job laying the groundwork for a new trilogy.

The Wailing starts today in a lot of bigger cities, here's a complete theatrical listing for USA/Canada.

I'm pretty dang stoked for this flick. The Chaser belongs on any list of best thrillers from the last decade. I didn't enjoy The Yellow Sea near as much, but it had its moments.

Saw TMNT2 last night.

It's a movie that sets out to be a live action TMNT cartoon that is absurd and simplistic and exactly what it set out to be. So it's a successful movie in that regard.

Completely adequate.

Forgot I never did reviews for some movies I saw in the theater over the last couple months.

Whiskey Tango Foxtrot

A good movie and Tina Fey does a great job, but the tone is a little weird. It tries to be both funny and dramatic/tense, and it never really meshed for me. I also thought the ending was a little weird (a minor character in the first 3/4 suddenly becomes the only focus), but all of this made a lot more sense after I left the theater and realized it was based on someone's actual life. Real life isn't quite so clean and narratively well-rounded, so I give those things a little more leeway.

3 / 5

Zootopia

Think I already talked about this one, but it was a really fun movie and when I realized Jason Bateman was the fox halfway into the movie my enjoyment increased immensely. The racism overtures feel really heavy-handed, but it's probably better than them being too subtle in a children's movie.

4 / 5

The Jungle Book

Tremendous movie. Not much to say except possibly my most petty complaint of all time: I didn't think Neel Sethi was good as Mowgli. Obviously, kid actors should have a different standard to aspire to, but every other aspect of this Jon Favreau production is so slick that he really sticks out. I don't blame him at all - he's acting and reacting to a bunch of blue screen, but it still hurt my enjoyment a little. Like I said, this is my pettiest critique of all time and I'm not proud of it, but I have to be honest.

4 / 5

X-Men: Apocalypse

A worthy, yet somewhat muddled, successor to X-Men: Days of Future Past. To be clear: if you're in the camp that thought X2, First Class, or DOFP were "trash," you will not like this movie. I don't understand people that fall into that camp on even a basic level. If you're on board with Fox's X-Men universe and Singer's entries in it, you'll probably really enjoy this movie.

Weak points include Apocalypse being fairly one-night, too much disaster porn at a time when it feels like we're finally getting away from it, and a weirdly-paced first act. There's also a missed opportunity with Quicksilver, and Magneto flips a little too easily at the end. Finally certain characters like Storm and Jubilee get shortchanged, but it's an ensemble superhero team movie - there's always a limit.

Highlights for me include seeing the Nightcrawler of my dreams on-screen and given quite a bit more spotlight than I expected based on pre-release media, another amazing Quicksilver scene (which I liked better than the DOFP one by virtue of its song choice), and far less Mystique (Jennifer Lawrence) than the trailers implied. I also loved the setup at the end which puts everything in place for an amazing "90's X-Men" movie, complete with the most accurate costumes the series has seen outside of Deadpool.

For me:

Days of Future Past > X2: X-Men United > Apocalypse > First Class >>> X-Men >>> the other dogshit

4 / 5

The Big Short

Absolutely loved this one. Sharply-written, clever, inventive, well-edited, star-studded, really the whole package. This movie is so packed to the gills with greatness, it's hard to believe the director's previous movie was fucking Anchorman 2.

5 / 5

Dark Places

Charlize Theron in a thriller based on a murder-mystery Gillian Flynn novel? Sign me up!

...is what I thought when I saw the trailer. And then I saw the movie, and... it really highlights how much David Fincher brought to the table when adapting Gone Girl. This movie, in comparison, thinks itself really clever even when the twists are plainly obvious. I also found the basic premise of the movie pretty ridiculous, and that's not even including the climax which hits the pedal full-throttle on the way to crazytown. And no, the actual climax isn't nearly as fun as I make it sound. It kinda reaches "so bad it's good" levels but doesn't quite make it.

I love Charlize in almost anything but she was either miscast or poorly directed here. She tries to play a sullen massacre-survivor, but it mostly comes off as sleepwalking. Nick Hoult does the best he does, but I found his character pretty annoying and pointless. Movie wasn't a total waste of time but I'm glad I didn't pay for it (one of the few movies I've watched on Amazon Prime.)

2 / 5

The Heat

I saw the trailers for this way back when and thought it looked fun, if a bit cliche. And that's pretty much what the movie ended up being. I'm giving this one a slight bump because once the movie gets rolling, it never lets up and it's fairly clever and inventive with some of its joke setups.

I can sorta understand why it's divisive, but I don't think it's a poor film in the slightest. Every scene is taught, the action is really good and it pours on a lot of fanservice. There's no scenes that feel like they're boring or too long and characters don't do annoying things (which are close to dealbreakers for me.) It's a well-made blockbuster at the very least.

X-Men was good; not great.  It's in the same league with first class and DOFP for sure.  Has some issues but overall its entertaining.  Sets up the next one as well.

Honestly if it weren't for how great the marvel movies are, I think people would have been really happy with this.  Unlike BvS, its actually a good movie.

I'm honestly surprised there's anyone out there who can criticize The Winter Soldier. I enjoyed the hell out of the first Avengers movie, but it was all the character interaction. Other than Loki, the actual bad-guys they fought were lame and the final scene was more war-like than what I consider comic-book-like.

Those Thor movies are sure snore-fests though.

I understand, and kind of agree. Avengers 1 and 2 particularly have the same ponderous "let's play Horde Mode" ending. But for me, Thor movies are the worst. I can tell you the plot of Iron Man 1 and 3, and enjoyed both immensely. I couldn't tell you what happened in either Thor movie. I've even seen the front half of the Thor 1 several times, and it's just boring, boring, meandering bullshit.

So im watching The Lost World and I really think this is the rare type of movie that actually gets worse each time I watch it. The most offensive thing about it is that it turns raptors from cunning hunters and into brainless monsters. You have to wonder if they even want to eat the humans considering how it looks like they don't try very hard.

Lost World is an absolute garbage fest and probably the lowest point of Spielberg's career. He made a couple of stinkers otherwise but at least it seemed like he cared for the content. The JP sequel is thoroughly mediocre and on autopilot.

Sicario - Benicio Del Toro is one of the best actors of our age. Acting was stellar across the board in this dark-as-hell movie about illicit government actions fighting Mexican cartel operations. The opening was strong, and I found myself thinking it was not going to finish well, but the ending knocked it out of the park. Very tense and unpredictable final confrontation, and then one final summary scene showing just how broken Del Toro's character had become.

Yeah it just seems like a check list of things they wanted to do in another Jurassic Park movie.  There's still some really great sfx work and a few spots of great visuals as a whole, but it's just such an awful movie.  I used to disagree with those who said it was worse than 3, but I think they might be right.

I didn't hate it, but I did find it stayed too long for my liking, and had a return of First Class's "here's a bunch of mutants no one cares about."

Unfortunately the next one is going to be a Mr. Sinister story instead of something that could be tighter in scope. This would be a great time for a story like Magneto's first appearance in the animated series.

The first 30 or minutes or so was the worst part.  It wasn't that bad after that.  It just felt like a really lazy, unsubtle way to set up the themes.  It probably didn't help that I just didn't really enjoy the movie.  I can usually enjoy most modern animated movies on some level.  I just really didn't like this one.  Fucking furries ruin everything.

If what they're saying about the next Wolverine movie being Jackson's last portrayal of the character to be true, I get the feeling that we're gonna see X-23 pop up.  Especially with the post-credits scene in Apocalypse.

However, that Sinister stuff from the post-credits scene also could be a lead-in to the next Wolverine movie.

Haha, this was my EXACT reaction when I walked out of the theater.

I was like "Those reviews... :confused"

It's simple. It wasn't an MCU movie.

Conjuring 2 - 4/10. I'd probably give the first a 7. The sequel just felt so perfunctory, more like a TV episode than a movie event. Same issue as most comic book movies. It's not bad, it's just not special. Similarly, making a haunted house flick these days is tantamount to filling out a math formula. At least Wan seems incapable of shooting a boring looking movie.

Agreed. There is just nothing outstanding in it. Hits the required notes and that's it. There was a somewhat long shot at the beginning going throughout the house before bed time the first night that I felt set the stage really well. It introduced the characters, gave you a layout of the house and gave you a glimpse of some of the props used by the spirit later. I thought that was pretty damn good.
