Take Shelter was great. I really like Michael Shannon and Jessica Chastain, and they have an oddly sweet relationship for a movie about a dude losing his mind and terrifying everyone close to him.

Didn't really like 10 Cloverfield Lane. John Goodman is great, and it's funny seeing Jim from The Newsroom have dialogue that isn't completely awful after seeing him vomit Sorkin for three seasons, but it really didn't come together at all. It's weird watching a movie that takes place in a bunker that somehow feels less claustrophobic than season 2 of Lost, and the last 20 minutes were so goofy.

I finally watched Hail, Caesar after being worried I would hate it. Cohen brothers movies almost always connect with me, but when they don't, it sucks (devil wears prada, no country) and I figured that them doing a movie about making movies would be so inside baseball that I'd hate it on principle, so I was really glad when it turned out to be completely in line with my sense of humor.

Moonrise Kingdom is the first Wes Anderson flick since Rushmore that I've seen that I've actually liked, instead of just been able to appreciate but been annoyed by. Haven't seen Grand Budapest Hotel though.

They showed a preview for that new Nicolas Winding Refn movie. It looks amazing visually. Too bad it will suck because it's a Nicolas Winding Refn movie.

Watched Cell last night which was a bad Stephen King novel I read years ago.

Not surprisingly its a really bad movie too. It's basically a zombie movie that ends up being worse than your typical zombie movie because it has a really dumb premise to it. I think somebody cut Sam Jackson and John Cusak a fat checks and then spent no other money because the movie looks cheap. It's filmed terribly.

At least The Happening is a funny and visually interesting bad movie. This is one is a boring and self serious bad movie.

I wasn't even aware this was out, so I looked it up and saw it got a VOD release before the theatrical release in July. Probably not a good sign.

The book sucked, but bummer about the movie. Cusack and Jackson were fun in 1408.

Yeah that's why I gave it a chance. I liked 1408 and I was hoping for a surprise in Cell. Getting over the premise is half the battle. I just keep thinking about the fictional movie from Saving Sarah Marshall

The book was not good but its much better than the movie which is just horrible. I mean I had low expectations coming in so its not like I wasted my time but it was worse than I expected.

Meh. There's some hilarious parts to be sure (Wahlberg speaking to a fake plant  :lol) and it may be more self-aware that people give it credit for, but it's pretty boring nonetheless and the interpretation is super stiff and wooden.

For me the constant stupidity and stilted acting make every scene enjoyable. It certainly is a boring movie when it comes to plot and storytelling, but it has a lot of goofiness and charm.

A movie that also got a lot of positive attention for being really bad was The Wicker Man with Nic Cage. That movie to me didn't live up to the hype.

I think Rob Zombie has it in him to make something really amazing, but he hasn't quite got there yet. The Devil's Rejects is the closest he's been so far. Lord of Salem is defo his most visually striking movie.

The plot of this new movie reminds me too much of House of 1000 Corpses, which isn't a good thing.

House of 1000 Corpses was fun the first time I watched it, but I've hated it on subsequent viewings. It really drags. It looks great a lot of the time, though.

The Devil's Rejects is pretty awesome, and it stands as a good justification for him to keep making movies.

Halloween is honestly not that bad, although 1) I'm not one of those people that's obsessive about the original. I can understand it's important, but I don't get it in the way that people who hold it up as an all time classic do (and I say this as a bigass Carpenter fan that has tickets to see him live on Friday), and 2) I probably wouldn't even try watching this again. It's a run-of-the-mill slasher that's been done zillions of times with more character.

Halloween II honestly is that bad, though.

Lords of Salem is like 2/3rds really good. It fucks up the landing though, and it has some general clunkiness during the good parts, too. It's still a pretty intriguing mood piece.

Watched Gladiator for the first time in 13 years last night. That last 1/3 of the movie really drags. Really bogs down with too much unnecessary dialog. By the time the big finale hits, I'm checked out.

I think a lot less of the movie now.

Conuring 2 was aight. Didn't really have the classic horror feel that the original Conjuring had IMO. A lot less subtle, a lot more CG monster shit. Felt more like an Insidious flick tbh.

re: Gladiator, I watched Nice Guys and LA Confidential two weeks ago and it dawned on me that up until about 2007, Crowe had a legit great, if completely safe, filmography, at least as far as critical success is concerned. It also dawned on me that he has at least one scene in everything he's in where he trashes someone else's living room

Sicario - Benicio Del Toro is one of the best actors of our age. Acting was stellar across the board in this dark-as-hell movie about illicit government actions fighting Mexican cartel operations. The opening was strong, and I found myself thinking it was not going to finish well, but the ending knocked it out of the park. Very tense and unpredictable final confrontation, and then one final summary scene showing just how broken Del Toro's character had become.
I'll have to check this out. Evidently, one of the writers also wrote the screenplay to Hell or High Water, which was the only trailer that looked promising my last trip to the theaters

So the guy who directed the new Eli Roth produced Clown slasher movie is directing the new Spiderman?  Uhhhh, odd choice for Marvel.  I get that he did a lot of stuff for the onion, which is probably the kind of humor they want, and he did some indie flick with Kevin Bacon that got good reviews, but idk that's not much of a track record to boot in front of a movie that absolutely needs to be great since the Spiderman film name's been kind of dragged through the mud since Spiderman 3.

In a multiplex on an Xbox HUEG screen Gladiator is pretty chill if only for the sheer spectacle of it, especially the titular bits. If it seems drab now that's partly due to spectacle creep and partly because you're probably watching it on a high definition postage stamp. I thought OG Ben-Hur was Zzz until I saw it in a cinema a lifetime ago.

Unfortunately a proper spectacle venue won't counteract the mandatory-for-all-modern-action-movies dad porn or the jarring ambiguous religious shite, but nothing's perfect.

It's really incredibly how much the director's cut changed that movie. I saw the original version first and it was just really dull, with paper-thin characters and a plot that never cohered. The DC was amazing, though, one of modern Ridley Scott's best movies.

Strange.  I'd think Marvel would want like their A+ game on this to establish a good Spider-Man movie and show they know what they're doing with the franchise now that they've finally got it.

I'm pretty sure that Sony still has final call on most of the big decisions, as they're the ones writing the checks.

and the indie thriller Jon Watts made prior to Spider-Man, Cop Car, snuck onto my best of list for last year (its like 20 movies long, and near the end of it, but still). Its a great movie because its about dumb kids that act like dumb kids (but not annoying kids) which makes for a great device to move the thriller plot forward. Most thrillers depend on morally compromised heroes the justify the trouble they get into, Cop Car is great/thrilling/friggin hilarious because its about some children who constantly misjudge the danger they're in and keep going forward anyway because they don't really know any better.

If I were Sony, and I were looking for a guy that could make a funny movie that's about young people, but not really youth-skewering, and could handle a tricky tonal balence while keeping lots of jokes, well then the guy they got is a pretty good choice. At least going by the pretty great Cop Car.

So, it turns out Ryan Gosling a really good physical comedian. The Nice Guys proves it. Its a pretty solid action comedy, tips more towards the comedy end of the scale, with Shane Black riffing extensively on the genre that he pretty much invented. Even if you didn't see the credits you could still tell it was him writing all that tart and witty dialog, and it even has that Joel Silver feeling, probably because its a Joel Silver production. Its such a self-consciously retro throwback, that its 70's setting doesn't even feel purely necessary, only in that it provides some joke fodder and helpfully removes cell phones from mucking up the plot. I enjoyed it, a flavor of comfort food cinema that's become all too rare anymore.

Now on most days, The Nice Guys would have been the funniest thing I'd seen by far, on most days. But today I also went and saw Popstar: Never Stop Never Stopping because its about to be damn near impossible to find in a theater come this Friday. It'll be one of the biggest major studio bombs to come out this year, which is really a shame, as its financial failure can perhaps be traced to its utterly ruthless skill at satirizing current pop music and celebrity culture, but at a glance it looks very much like the sort of multi-level approved pop star hagiography that its brutalizing. I don't want to accuse any movie of being too smart that has a full-length performance of the song 'Fuck Me Like How Bin Laden Got Killed', as its plenty goofy, with lots of discursive, bizarre, and wonderfully juvenile jokes there just for the hell of it. But mainstream comedies this good aren't all that common, and its a shame that like the also great, also Lonely Island affiliated Hot Rod, that being a cult hit is the best it can hope for.

Anyway, it was like watching a bad Shrek sequel that didn't have Dunkey because it was one of these shitty sequels where they didn't wanna pay to get all the original cast back. But it also didn't have Smashmouth, so I dunno, maybe we'll call it a wash.

I really want to see both of those, and I'm certain neither one will be in a theater in Japan any time soon, if ever. Then again, I'll likely buy The Lonely Island's effort, because I am more or less swimfan for them.

I haven't been to a movie theater in a couple years, but really want to go to popstar, mostly just to give my token support to the guys.

Ben Affleck has generally come across to me as a cool guy, that commentary snippet only cements that.

When the fuck did Rhona Mitra start looking like Steven Tyler? What'd she do to her mouth?

Curb Your Enthusiasm finally gets the big screen treatment, well not exactly, but Weiner's high quotient of cringe comedy and simpatico self-lacerating/sabotaging protagonist comes awfully close. Its also a very well staged breakdown of a public figure's ongoing humiliation, alongside the actual nuts and bolts of how exactly a highly embarrassing scandal looks from being embroiled within it. Perhaps, most amazingly, is that its subject still comes across as a decent, or at the very least, not terrible person, considering just how crappy his behavior looks even now in retrospect, not to say even at the time. But what makes it a good movie isn't that its filmmakers had the great luck to be there when its subject's professional life exploded, what makes it a good movie is how very well they tell that story, and how they're able to incorporate clips from media programs into the film (the disastrous interview with Lawrence O' Donnell is one of my favorite film scenes of this year). It really does play out kind of like a sitcom, one I'd happily watch week after week.

The Witch - Not scary but the atmosphere and sense of dread are so profound that you can almost taste them. And also, that ending :rejoice

We need more horror movies like this
