Yeah I'm not knocking down Bruce Lee, to be clear. Not my cup of tea but the raw charisma cannot be denied. Likewise I don't think the action itself has aged that much either. It's everything else that I find mediocre in the film : granted you could say the same for the Way of the Dragon with its nonsense plot and hilariously campy depiction of Rome... Enter the Dragon probably has more production value, in truth, but it's all a little bit wasted. Even Lalo Schifrin's theme is well known but it's pretty vulgar, frankly.

Because of the media blitz I decided to watch the original Ghostbusters. For whatever reason I only saw it once as kid in theaters and haven't seen it since despite seeing Ghostbusters 2 so many times on cable tv over the years.

I had forgotten nearly all of it besides a couple of tentpole moments.

It's funny and good of course but I never really liked Ghostbusters as much as others did. So the hoopla/controversy over the remake escapes me. It's no better/worse than dozens of other 80's cultural movies. It would be like getting insanely upset over a remake of Ferris Bueller's Day Off.

As far as Bill Murray movies I prefer Quick Change, & GroundHog Day.
This is like Back to the Future for me.  I never understood the great appeal. I missed most of these movies from the 80's and didn't see them until I was a teenager.  They're okay I guess, but I don't understand why people go ape shit for them.

I like all these movies. It's just that the reverence and fervor the nerd/nostalgia community lathers up can be a bit much at times. It specifically seems to be centered around 80's films.

I'm trying to think of an 80's movie (or any decade tbh) that if they remade it, I would be outraged enough to catch feels about it on the Internet. Maybe Videodrome?

Remakes don't really bother me enough to do more than post a couple times grousing about how they likely won't be any good. Generally, they aren't and I just go on with my life. I'm certainly not going to churn out dozens of essays about the topic or start some kind of ban on the people involved.

Yeah but there are other shots that have leaked that look the same way. Granted they're set shots so who knows what they might do in post production.

That EW cover though looks REALLY bad. But EW always has terrible covers.

In truth remakes were always a thing. A good story then is a good story now and working with a tried recipe was always an appealing proposition in an industry as competitive and unpredictable as filmmaking. The problem maybe don't lie here but rather on the whole idea that you are not so much making individual products anymore, but building "intellectual properties" designed to rely on other iterations instead of standing on its own. A lot of the recent "remakes" are just farming nostalgia and / or fulfilling legal and contractual obligations to keep a hold on a name or a character.

I think I use to care about these things when I was younger but now I don't really. They can remake anything. It's doesn't take away that original thing I like. And let's be honest. It's no different than any of the soul crushing stuff hollywood does anyway including never ending sequels and beating whatever movie trend that is currently popular to death.

Maybe if it was just a separate series in the same universe and not a remake more people would be down.

Original Ghostbusters > BTTF. But really, if you think either film is better than okay, you're an honorary suburban white kid. These movies are mediocre at best and you'd have to be lame to ascribe any sort of greatness to them.

Watched James Gunn's Slither finally.  Was ok, but nothing special.  The first 45 mins is kind of lame?  Not particularly funny, no real character development, no suspense or anything.  Then when the monsters show up it gets fun and entertaining.  It serviceable but for starring Nathan Fillion, I sort of expected more wit and humor, or at least more camp to put it in the Evil Dead-ish cult classic style.  But it never quite gets there and it's obviously not going for a scary/suspense horror movie, so it's just sort of left in a light goofy horror C+ popcorn entertainment alley.  Super was a lot better than this and of course GoTG was great, Slither is just eh, ok.

Actually the one thing I'll give it a lot of credit for is the make up and effects instead of CG.  Really captured that 80s crazy monster makeup feel and I respect that.  The monster was definitely the most fun part of the movie.

Slither was enjoyablel. It's a middling "parasite invasion in a small town" homage with great effects and fun performances but that's it.

Finally some back up.  I even tried to rewatch BttF last night.  It just doesn't hold my attention.  There are a few scenes I actually like.  The movie isn't offensive.  It's just... okay.

I really like Linklater (mostly for the Before sunrise/sunset/midnight trilogy), but I've never seen dazed & confused and I don't really want to.  Does it make sense to jump into Everybody Wants Some?

And the best movies I've seen released in 2016 this year have been Tickled, The Nice Guys, 10 Cloverfield Lane, Green Room & Deadpool in that order.  Been a decent enough year so far.  No complaints.

Also saw Hunt for the Wilderpeople and it was good.  Like 3/4 stars good family/kids film.  Nice performance by the kid and had some funny bits, was fairly charming and would recommend it.  I think what kept me from really loving it was that it basically was just a B-Wes Anderson film that's not as funny, weird, stylish or as well directed as an Anderson film.  I think it's a better movie than What we Do in the Shadows overall, because I thought that one lost steam about halfway when the single joke ran out, but I still liked Shadows better because the first half of that is reaaaaally funny and the concept is original and great.

I'm curious about why you don't want to see Dazed and Confused. It's a straight-up classic. I seriously recommend seeing it, as soon as possible!

That said, Everybody Wants Some is just a sort of thematic follow-up. You don't need to see D&C first. But you should really see D&C, for realz. It'd be in my 90s top 10 for sure.

Kamikaze 89 is an interesting curiosity. If it were made today, it would've been done as straight cyberpunk, but that didn't really exist when it was made. It exists in a weird, new wave-y Alphaville place. It gets difficult to follow about 2/3rds of the way in, but it lands a coherent ending. Fassbinder is amazing.

Hmmm, ok.  Maybe I'll watch it.  I'm just not a big fan of older movies.  It's blasphemous and all, but I feel like most movies made in the 70-90s have a certain feel to them that was great when I was growing up in the 80s/90s watching them, but now it all just feels dated like retro gaming.  Like I enjoyed Independence Day back when it came out, but I have a feeling if I re-watched it today I'd just find it cheesy.

Eh, I only used that example because with the sequel a lot of people were talking about how the original was a classic movie of the 90s, but I'd never watch it again because a lot of things that were "cool" in the 90s, from fashion to humor tend to not hold up very well today imo.

Anyhow, I just watched Jupiter Ascending, why did this get bad reviews?  Seemed as good as any of the recent Star Treks or Star Wars ep7 for enjoyable sci-fi action movie.  Reminded me more of Dune and had fairly awesome ship/city designs.  Thought it was good.  In fact, since I also liked Cloud Atlas and Speed Racer, I'm pretty positive on the Watchowskis outside the Matrix sequels.

I hated the shit outta Independence Day, and I still do, sort of. But its become a very valuable film over time as its pretty much the last mega-budget blockbuster that relied entirely on practical effects. Watching it today its a marvel of handcrafted model work and compositing of such. There's actually very little CGI in the film at all, and it stands as the pinnacle of what was possible to put on screen without loading up everything into a computer and spitting out weightless and glossy effects. If I'm gonna grade those otherwise gormless Ray Harryhausen flicks on a curve, I might as well give a few retroactive points to Independence Day.

also, its kind of neat to see a film where Jeff Goldblum and Will Smith could be billed on equal standing, hoo boy, that time did not last long.

Tickled was pretty solid. Its and investigative journalistic documentary into a very strange internet subculture (competitive endurance tickling). Runs out of gas a bit by the end, but the following of and the developments born of this rather bizarre story are pretty interesting already on their own.

Oh shit, The Killer Nun is playing today. Might have to cancel my plans. I fucking love nunsploitation. It's like my third favorite kind of exploitation film.

"Starring Warhol mainstays Joe Dellasandro and Anita Ekberg, this Grade A exploitation film centers around Sister Gertrude (Ekberg), a nun that works in a geriatric hospital. While recovering from neurosurgery, she becomes addicted to heroin and morphine, starts a lesbian affair with another sister, and inflicts a reign of drug-induced terror on the elderly patients, which includes stomping on false teeth, forcing them to exercise, and possibly throwing them out of windows."

Watched Escape From Alcatraz starring Clint Eastwood, which delivers what it says it will: clint eastwood escapes from alcatraz. It's an ok straight-forward prison film, but it's kinda goofy how flagrantly shocked and useless the guards are when literally anything happens, like it's everyone's first day on the job? And Clint basically snitches on one of his friends? Robert Redford's mediocre prison film was better imo

Why not watch a fun movie about Nazis, like Ilsa? Schindler's List has always been a complete snoozer to me. It looks good, but it has nothing else going for it.  For what's supposed to be a powerful movie, it's actually pretty flat.

Heh I like it a lot, not the best Siegel I saw but I love the zero bullshit no filler approach. I don't remember how the guards are portrayed but in real life it turns out they were indeed oblivious to the papier maché heads and all the rest.

Heh I like it a lot, not the best Siegel I saw but I love the zero bullshit no filler approach. I don't remember how the guards are portrayed but in real life it turns out they were indeed oblivious to the papier maché heads and all the rest.

like when there's a fight in the yard or a prisoner mutilates himself the guards react like they're substitute teachers. the escape plan+execution is good, the straight forward focus and the relative lack of annoying side story tensions is nice (ex. wolf not killing litmus' mouse).

Bronson was awesome. Pretty limited actor but he made the most of it. It's a shame the dawn of his career was an endless rehash of the poorer Death Wish episodes (except for the downright goofy vigilante fantasy of Death Wish 3).

Bronson was pretty great, considering how limited his overall range was. He was fantastic in westerns.

I watched John Wick. I thought the movie was pretty much perfect. The nonsequential storytelling is very well executed and I found myself cackling frequently as the force-of-nature that is John Wick was gradually revealed. I'll be viewing this repeatedly, frequently.

Next up was Keanu's Constantine this morning after having an inexplicable jones for it for a couple weeks now. It's not a bad movie. In fact, after divorcing this incarnation from the comics, it holds up surprisingly well on its own. Fantastic cast, though this is 11-years-ago Keanu trying for world-weary. He manages it better in John Wick. Stormare and Swinton are wonderful in it, and I was surprised to recognize Shia LoBeef as a very annoying interpretation of Chaz. Rachel Weisz does what she can with some very odd dialog which seems at constant odds with what she's experiencing in the story.

I dug Constantine a lot. Great set design too. Awesome version of Satan and of course Tilda Swinton is god-tier.

Watched The Nice Guys tonight.

I had heard good thing so I thought it would be good...

I didn't know it would be that good. That was excellent and funny and clever and awesome.

Wait, where's the signature Stoney balance? Where is the middle ground? ARE THESE THE END TIMES?

Entourage

Pretty much what you'd expect. If you like the show, you'll like this, and vice versa. Entourage is one of my guilty pleasures, I know it's terrible and mindless entertainment but sometimes that's what you need, you know? That said, I fell out of the show at around the midpoint when it started taking itself way too seriously. The movie was a return to form in a ways, although it's so inconsequential I can't really recommend it for the layman. If you want to see pampered celebrities living the life with a shitload of cameos, this is your movie.

10 Cloverfield Lane

Really tense, well-directed thriller whose constant genre switches and surprises keep the pace operating at a decent hum. It's better to go into it not really knowing what to expect, and since a lot has already been said about this movie I've kept my review short.

4 / 5

Hail, Caesar!

Solid flick but I got the impression the Coen Brothers intended to go deeper with the movie's central theme than they ultimately did. A couple people here have already said it's a slow burn, but I had no expectations going in so I was fine with that. It's interesting, because this movie can be really funny and really sullen at the turn of a hat, but I suppose that's the Coen Brother trademark.

Pawn Sacrifice

Another solid flick, and something I feel was tuned to be Oscar bait. This film follows the formula of the sports movie genre pretty closely, but what sets it apart is both the looniness of its subject matter and hammy performer of the actor portraying him. Toby goes all out here and while some critics dinged the film for that, I rolled with it and was having a great time. That said, there's obviously a huge disconnect with portraying the final conflict as a patriotic rah-rah for America when the end credits a few minutes later has to state how off-rails Bobby Fischer eventually got. I still enjoyed the movie but the ending was just a disconnect, and I'm not sure how they could have gone another way.

Blue Velvet

I'm not sure how fair this review can be, since this is my first viewing of this movie and it obviously demands more than that to truly appreciate, but I still think I gained a decent grasp of things. This is probably the most muddled David Lynch film I've seen so far - Eraserhead, The Elephant Man, and Mulholland Drive all had clearer central threads. Blue Velvet in comparison sort of zig-zags, starts-and-stops.

I get the impression Lynch was still refining his editing skills here. Looking up production info after the credits revealed the original cut was four hours, which explains quite a bit. Still, even on its face it's compelling; unfortunately, it didn't make me feel much of anything, unlike the three previously-mentioned films.

Clearly, I recognize several moments that must have been groundbreaking at the time, but with the passage of time their significance has dulled (for me, at least.) But it's in recognizing them that I give Blue Velvet some credit - making Dennis Hopper even slimier than his literal lizard character in Super Mario Bros. years before the fact is quite a feat indeed.
