Fuck this shit. 99% of movies only get one pass with 99% of the public. If they require more than one viewing then the artistic team fucked up and misunderstood what trade they're in.

ah man, I missed out on a Charles Bronson discussion. Sheeeeit.

more people need to see Red Sun, his Italian Western co-starring Toshiro Mifune, with Alain Delon as the villain. Its almost as good as its cast

and I'm also very partial to the Walter Hill directorial debut, Hard Times, a depression-era underground fight movie (basically a prototype Van Damme film), its great.

Never felt Red Sun, it doesn't hold up to the casting, in my opinion.
Hard Times is good however. Walter Hill not yet at his best but the film covers an interesting period and a fresh subject.

Among the slightly less well remembered films, I'd recommend Sollima's Citta Violenta, a fine representative of Italian edgy thrillers (with a nice score) and Breakout, an enjoyable B movie where Bronson is a pilot hired to try to rescue a former United-Fruit-expy executive (R.Duvall) from a latin america jail where he was put in by his father (or step father ? Played by John Huston).

Death Wish is also a very solid film whose perception was tainted by its numerous sequels embracing the bigoted vigilante aspect of it. It's a sad tale about a man losing grip and developing a cold outlook on society. Bronson's best pairing with director M.Winner however is the Mechanic (vaguely remade with Statham), the story of lonely hitman taking under its wing as an apprentice the son of a friend / victim of his. It starts with a kicking 10 minute silent intro.

Haven't seen the Stone Killer but it has a Roy Budd soundtrack that might be worth your time.

haven't seen most of those, but boy howdy do I like The Mechanic. Man, Charlie had a pretty great run through the 70's, didn't he. Nobody here has even picked on the obvious choice of the best film ever about a melon farmer fighting the mob (Mr. Majestyk), and Death Hunt from the early 80's is kind of endearingly ridiculous when its not being sincerely awesome.

I mean, obviously I reviewed it so I agree, but I do think some films can have additional depth on rewatch and it's worth pointing out at least.

I really like Linklater (mostly for the Before sunrise/sunset/midnight trilogy), but I've never seen dazed & confused and I don't really want to.  Does it make sense to jump into Everybody Wants Some?
There really isn't any reason to skip D&C.  It's such a perfect little movie.

I fucking loved Blood Simple. It was such a great, raw template for all the Coen Bros. genius yet to come.
Seen the Chinese adaptation by the guy who directed Hero?
No, this is the first I've heard of it. I usually avoid remakes; is this one special?

Saw Ghostbusters 2016 last night.

Found it to be pretty boring for the most part. Felt like close to two hours of Paul Feig turning on the camera and tell everyone to just ad-lib, which wasn't funny 90% of the time and was out of place for this kind of movie. I think I only genuinely laughed about 3 or 4 times. Everything else feel completely flat.

I wanted to like Kate McKinnon more but really her character just didn't. She just plays a crazy person with no depth. Kristen Wig seemed to be bored and I don't find Melissa McCarthy funny in the slightest. Similarly to the RLM review, Leslie Jones was the only character in the movie that worked for me. I enjoyed Chris Hemsworth a bunch.

It wasn't terrible, just boring. Overall I give it a single ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

IMPORTANT: This is actually the movie "The Woods" that got a fuckton of great reviews recently.

Dunno if it was always intended to be a Blair Witch sequel or Lionsgate is doing it for IP recognition, but the actual movie is shaping up to be great.

It was during the Q&A that things got dicey. A Joker cosplayer asked the writers why they would downplay Barbara Gordon, such a strong female character, and make her story more about the men in her life. According to Bleeding Cool reporter Jeremy Konrad, the writers insisted she was still a strong female character. Konrad, who’d already seen the film and didn’t agree, himself sarcastically shouted, “Yeah, by using sex and then pining for Bruce.”

That’s when co-screenwriter Brian Azzarello seemed to put it all out there. “Wanna say that again? Pussy?” he asked.

Not knowing anything about DC besides Batman & Superman, I liked spider-man-esque Flash.  The rest looked just ok in both trailers and Affleck's deep serious Wayne voice is kinda dumb.

My friends invited me to see Hillary's America with them, and now that I'm single again (but have not yet re-entered the dating field) I'm pretty hard up for stuff to do on a Saturday night, so I figured 'what the hell'? Audience was exactly as I expected - everyone was old and white, except for my Indian friend.

The actual movie was laughably bad, the acting was so hammy and over the top. I haven't seen any of Dinesh D'Souza's other films (Obama's America) but I was expecting the movie to just show a future timeline showing what happened if Hillary gets elected. But it wasn't anything like that at all - the first half of the movie was talk about how Jackson and early Democrats were racist (oh wow, what a mindblowing revelation!), that Democrats keep the minorities and immigrants poor and living in the ghetto depending on the gubmit, and in reality, the Republicans were the good guys all along. Then he talked about how Hillary was linked to Saul Alinsky and how this was a really bad thing* but never really went over why, apart from mentioning a scam he took part in in his college days where he'd get a free meal out of local restaurants.

*I don't follow enough politics to know who this guy is.

Highlight of the movie was a scene where Wilson was in office, watching Birth of a Nation, and suddenly a KKK member on horseback jumps through the screen, they blew all $100 of their special effects budget on that scene.

Best of all, at the end of it, everyone stood up to applaud it.

Just watched 99 Homes

Honestly, kind of a disappointed.  Heard it was really good, has like 90% on RT.  It was good and the Michael Shannon was great, but it's like pretty standard story and it just kind of ends.  Felt unsatisfied.  Garfield's acting was basically just him being worried the entire time from start to finish.  Didn't really feel like his character changed much.

If you have Amazon Prime, the full episode is on there for free and him and Buckley discussing his views are far more interesting than any 2008+ rediscovery/explainer about Alinsky or painting of him as some kind of person who actually undergirds the ideology of every politician who becomes the Democratic nominee.

Rules for Radicals wasn't really an influential book. Even among the Left. It was really a summary of what Alinsky had learned over 30 some years of activism. It was "rediscovered" like 20 years after it came out and Alinsky had died and retroactively became the "guide" for things people had been doing for 50 years because it's a fairly good summary of those tactics.

Hillary wrote her undergrad thesis on him because he was active in Chicago while she was growing up AND after she contacted him he was willing to help her with it quite a bit. A first hand source is gold. IIRC, she actually called his methods counterproductive out of their demanding purity/radicalism/etc. with zero place for compromise. But I'd have to look it up.

His chain smoking throughout the Buckley episode is my favorite part. There was a lot of that on Firing Line in the 1960s/1970s but I think Alinsky set the record for times lighting up.

I'll be there Day 1 because so few horror movies actually hype me. But I have to ask, in what way is the original important to you? Just seems like an odd choice.

I'm an aspiring filmmaker so the entire production itself resonates with me, but aside from that I just think the movie is a masterful piece of cinema. Considering there was no real script and the actors were nobodies it should have been a complete mess, but everything in the movie just works. There's not a single wasted scene and the dread builds up piece by piece until you feel like you're suffocating.

Put another way, there's a lot of things I stan for, and my impassioned defenses of The Blair Witch Project in real life probably outclasses them all. Everybody has their right to an opinion about the movie, but few things get me going more than the cheap complaints for the film ("nothing happens!" particularly irks me.)

I make a habit of rewatching it every October 1st or so because even during my last viewing I was still finding new bits I hadn't really thought about or noticed before. I truly love it.

Quote
Blair Witch won’t affect seasoned horror fans (as much), but rest assured that it will destroy everyone else. This film will hurt people. It’s the emotional experience that transcends traditional narrative storytelling and ascends to a place of Nirvana... The film breaks the mold of traditional horror and pushes the boundaries to the absolute brink.

...

Some will laud it, others will loathe it, but make no mistake: Blair Witch is that game-changer horror fans desperately have been waiting for. It will usher in a new breed of genre films that are targeted at creating an emotional experience above all else. “Scary” is probably an understatement as this may just be the first film since The Exorcist that will leave younger audiences scarred for life.

This is some of the most reckless hyping I've ever seen. Really hope the movie lives up to these kind of reviews.

Watched Light's Out was solid, but not spectacular.  Creative idea, used well in a few parts, tense at parts but ultimately not super scary or anything.  Very similar to It Follows in that respect (although without the cool synth).  Also characters were dumber than I would have liked to see with the concept of a monster that is only physical in the dark.  It's not bad at all, but closer to a worse It Follows than something like The Witch or Green Room.

I watched the new Star Trek, it was pretty shit.

Enjoyed the new Star Trek a bunch. Really fun. Usage of Beastie Boys was dope.

These two quotes encapsulate every one of my friend's reactions to this movie.  I'm seeing it tomorrow night so I guess I'll see...
