I love how they couldn't let their villains/bad guys say racist/sexist things or hint at possibly of one being a rapist just to make him more unlikable.

Or that Joker and Harley are totes in love instead of, you know, Harley having a severe form of stockholm syndrome and unable to get out of an abusive relationship?

What a disaster. Even Batman: TAS had that kind of twisted relationship between them. :lol

That's what's so good about TAS. It invented Harley and that dynamic.

And it was a damn kid's cartoon, while the 2005 hot topic edgelord pandering Suicide Squad toned it down  :lol

Maybe they were scared feminists would throw a fit. There was no such fear when TAS aired.

I actually kind of liked Suicide Squad.  It was a trainwreck...but it was a fun trainwreck.  Much more fun to watch than Batman Vs. Superman was.  Margot Robbie had a pretty good portrayal of Harley Quinn.  The Joker wasn't in the movie much, but honestly I thought Jared Leto did a pretty good job too.  Will Smith was...Will Smith.  :doge  Amanda Waller was portrayed as a stone cold bitch- perfect.

There's one point where Boomerang scurries off to escape, but then comes back for no reason. Literally no reason was given, not even a shitty reason. He just shows up.

I was totally scratching my head at that part, too.   :lol  I guess he had a change of heart, but nothing was said.  Actually the whole movie sort of goes from nobody giving a shit about what they're doing to "we're a team...we're family!  Let's do this!" in what feels like a split second.  Wonder how much was cut or changed?

Also there was no explanation given for Katana.  She wasn't captured like the rest of the squad and wasn't a villain....so why the hell was she even there?  :lol

A lot had to have been cut between. The change was just too drastic.

Watched Ida, which won the Oscar for best foreign picture last year. An orphan girl having been raised as a nun in 1962 Poland is about to take her vows but must first go visit her only relative she never met : her aunt, a judge. As it turns out, the aunt informs Ida they're jewish... It is a short, stripped and effective film (80mn), with excellent & unconventional 1.33 framing and a very nice black & white photography. Plot is engaging and the two lead actresses are excellent. It's both a bleak portrait of post-war Poland and a touching character piece.

A shame I saw it on DVD : I honestly have a hard time standing the image quality and definition anymore  >:(

Harley Quinn first appeared in the Batman: The Animated Series episode "Joker's Favor",[4] as what was originally supposed to be the animated equivalent of a walk-on role; a number of police officers were to be taken hostage by someone jumping out of a pop out cake, and it was decided that to have the Joker do so himself would be too bizarre (although he ended up doing it anyway). Dini thus created a female sidekick for the Joker.

This was 1992, two years before her backstory was first revealed in the Mad Love comic book (1994.) It was adapted five years later in a New Batman Adventures episode, which is probably what confused you. :expert

Also this was surreal when I first found it years ago, but here's the inspiration for her via Days of Our Lives of all things:

Apparently an apparently complete list of deleted/altered Suicide Squad scenes:

""Harley using her baseball bat as a mock gun to play shoot at invisible foes.""

Wow, they actually got rid of things that were shown in the trailers? WTF. :lol

I saw Suicide Squad and well I thought it was perfectly decent. Were the characters great and deep(well Diablo actually had something going on). No, but they all had enough presence to be decent and entertaining. Except maybe Katana, but she's a stupid character anyway. I actually like crazy Mafioso Joker and think he fits in this DC Universe. He's a crazy crime lord in a universe were somehow people still question if the Batman is real. It makes more sense for him to be smaller scale then bigger scale like a worse movie would.

Characters like Harley and Amanda Waller were perfectly done. Yes I get that their abusive relationship isn't here and it's not exactly true to the comics, but hey it's the era we live in. Yes, it would be problematic and I'd rather a DC movie just ignore it and really just go with the two crazy lover angle than make a bigger mess.

It was a perfectly decent movie that didn't offend me. Simple and too the point. Characters had enough motivation with the key characters getting good enough character development that you'd want to see more of them. I don't think it was that much of a disaster. Yes maybe the Enchantress sucked, but when was the last time a comic book villain in one of these things was great? I don't know, fucking Nolan movies? Regardless, she was still better tied to the plot then most.

An ok movie.

Joker and Harlee's relationship is literally built on that. Harlee was a psychologist that was trying to treat Joker at Arkham Asylum but "snaps" when she thinks he has a point. He uses her as a fuck toy and has no real intention of loving her. (This is even stated in the first Batman game of last generation. :doge )

I guess it can be pulled off (Malleability is one of the best thing about those Marvel / DC comics), although it's pretty hard to imagine the Joker could be having an healthy relationship, but that'd be a bit like doing Not without my daughter sans the "held without consent" part.

I mean...all of that shit is basically implied in the movie, but it's all shown so quickly.  And then we have contradictory scenes like The Joker crashing a car into the sea and abandoning Harley...only to come back and rescue her later on.  ???

I think I'm gonna just skip Suicide Squad and hope for a different/better cut when it hits video.  I'll never watch BvS extended cut since I already wasted 3 hours+ on the original and why would I want to waste another 3 hours for a better version of a movie that's already make an impression that it's a movie I don't like.  At least this time around maybe I can save 2 hours and a bad first impression.  And if they don't release a different cut, I'll just watch this version then in 6 months.

Good luck with that.

I know it'll arrive eventually, but Nick Cage may be looking more like the current Indiana Jones by the time he does it.

I'm uninterested unless they get Ken Hite or even Tim Powers to write it.

Suicide Squad cracked at least $250 million for the weekend. Apparently it may have beat out Deadpool for fourth so-far this year after BvS, Civil War and The Jungle Book.

So that sequel is probably a go then even if it has a BvS like collapse. It seems to have a much higher user-to-critic score on the various sites than BvS did though so drop off might not be as bad.

I was thinking of the weekend to weekend drop, BvS' was something insane like 80%. It made half its money in the first weekend.

I didn't realize this cost $175 million tho, fuck, I thought it had to be like $100 million tops (with a few ten millions extra to pay for Smith and Leto) because of the property and the fact that it was essentially going second in the DC Films alone. They probably tripled the marketing budget after BvS semi-flopped and the second trailer took off too.

Apparently it still isn't set to release in China? That's going to hurt.

I REALLY hated it when I first saw the promo images. Then they I saw some of the scenes and shit from the trailer and I started to warm up to it. From what I had seen up to that point I was beginning to think he was making the look work.

Now I haven't seen SS. Probably won't. But I wonder, does Leto Joker not work because the performance is bad? Or is it the writing just shit?

Both.  He was easily the worst part of the movie for me.  His lines were awful, his role in the movie was awful and his performance was awful.  It's a good thing he's barely in it.

I don't think he's bad. He's a strange eccentric Mafioso Joker which works for the more small scale Batman seemed to be in this universe. It does seem a bit forced and reads like some BROs interpretation of what a crazy person is, but he didn't bother me too much.

I don't know it's a strange movie and it does really feel very manufactured. Leto's Joker feels like them missing the point of why Ledger's worked, istead seeing it as "just be crazy".

The movie really has no tone. The story could be gritty. It looks gritty, but honestly nothing gritty happens. Deadshots daughter thing in the end is lame and it devolves into "my friends are my power" nonsense which dosen't work because that theme never feelt consistently developed.

Still, I don't think it was a bad movie. These aren't terrible representations of these characters and I don't think the plot is total incoherent garbage. Some good performances which honestly carry the movie which is mostly about characters even though there's looking in substance. Not style though.

So thanks to you folks I rented and watched Dazed & Confused last night before I head into Everybody Wants Some in the future.

30 minutes in I almost turned it off and bailed.  The acting is so awful, it's just a bunch of kids decided to make a movie together and act silly, and the first 30 minutes feels like it has no story or coherence and is just a bunch of kids hanging out.  Ben Affleck as the dude who loves chasing kids and paddling them is  :doge

Then it sort of grew on me.  By the end it's a little charming and I can see why people like it.  It's an alright movie, but it feels super super amateurish, especially in the performances.  I looked up a lot of these actors and man, most of these people went nowhere with their careers.

Pretty sure I'll like Everybody Wants Some a lot more.  Linklater's matured a ton as a writer/director over the decades, compare Before Sunrise to Before Midnight (Sunrise is probably a better movie, but Midnight is way more professional).

Watched Batman v. Superman on the plane. I'd been planning to watch Ultimate Edition because it seems to suck less. It would be difficult for the regular version to suck more. Batman's pretty good, and I like Cavill as Superman, and Gal Gadot is DREAMY as WW, but all the pieces do not fit well together, much of it seems just thrown in, as if Snyder just thought "wouldn't it be cool if..." and then added it whether or not it made any sense. It'll be a while before I even consider returning to that particular dumpster fire, even if it's an improved dumpster fire.

90's indie movies almost always have terrible acting in them. It's something you have to overlook (along with the paltry budget) to enjoy the film for what it is.

Personally, I didn't like Dazed and Confused because I found one of the main characters (Adam Goldberg) insufferable.

:confused I fail to see what's so bad about the pieces. Nothing really jumps out at me as bad from the movie. What do you mean?

I'm trying to recall things from the flight, but I'm still pretty jet-lagged. Even so:

  • Tropey! How many dream sequences? ALL THE DREAM SEQUENCES. Even waking dreams. Batman gets at least two. Superman sees his dad but rather than being poignant, it seems to be a hallucination.
  • No original ideas, just Lossy Copy-and-Paste: Snyder takes his favorite parts of Year One and DKR and puts them willy-nilly into The Death of Superman, but with his own twist on them, the twist being that they don't really make sense. Even Strangers On A Train is drawn from, with Batman saying he'll save Superman's Martha while Superman confronts the genius Lex. Why not instead tell Superman to follow the cell signal, and let him fly in high speed, save his mom before anyone can even react, leaving Bat-genius to confront Lex-genius? Sure, that's a stretch, but how about Excalibur? It's "coming soon" on the theater where young Bruce sees Zorro with his parents, and then in the end, we have "Come, father, let us embrace" moment when both Superman and Doomsday simultaneously impale each other. Except that they're not not related, and it's not poignant. FFFfffufuuuuuuuuuuuuu...
  • Lex is framing Superman for an extraterritorial intervention, by putting Lois Lane in danger and claiming Superman killed everyone. With bullets. Why not a heat ray, simulating Superman's heat vision? Why not a shock wave from an air-detonation, simulating a "super boom"? If bullets, why SPECIAL BULLETS which can only be traced back to Lex?
  • Lex gains access to Zod's fallen Kryptonian battleship computers via slicing off Zod's fingerprints. But it speaks English to Lex. And then offers a library of "hundreds of thousands of worlds," from which Lex figures out how to make a super-zombie, which is forbidden, but which Lex overrides. In English.  Why not show Lex's technical genius by having it circumvent the Kryptonian security? Instead he just says to do it, and it does.
  • Cutting back and forth and back and forth; it gave a very inconsistent feeling of time. I remember thinking hours or days had passed at one point, but it cut back to Lois and she was just where she'd been left in the previous scene.
  • Was Lex counting on Batman to interrupt the kryptonite on its entry into Metropolis? I thought no, because there was a big car chase where Batman killed everyone involved. It seems like Lex manipulated a situation where Superman or Batman would kill each other, but it also seems like Lex had no specific plan for the larger kryptonite device. Though Batman's Spear of Longinus isn't exactly a feat of technology.
  • Was there an end-game for Doomsday? How would Lex have stopped it once it kills Superman? I refuse to believe Lex will destroy the world just because he feels small-pen0r compared to Supes.
  • Lots of "suddenly, this happens" moments. Suddenly, Superman calls Batman "Bruce" -- how is it clear Superman knows who he is? We don't see X-ray vision anywhere else, so it's not the mask. Superman knew Bruce was after Lex for some reason because he eavesdropped at the soiree, but it's not clear how he put together that Bruce and Bats are the same guy. Suddenly, Bruce finds out that his crippled employee is angry at Superman, but it's not clear why Bruce is against this, because Bruce also hates Superman at that point. Suddenly Superman is in self-imposed exile, because he didn't see the bomb during the trial. Suddenly, he's back -- and within hearing range of Lois' screams. Just... c'mon. It's ALL LAZY WRITING.
