Oh geez. This looks like a rough animatics reel that accidentally got released as an actual film.

Thanks! Sometimes I wish I could concise.

The only non-whites in it are Deep Ones, so it is unclear what Howard's feelings are toward an unrepresented group.

The Young Offenders

Funny Irish comedy about two young Cork lads that set out on a road trip to find cocaine that washed ashore. You can add a star to the rating if you ever have been in Ireland or Cork in particular.

Independence Day 2

Total shitfest with Chinese product placement. No one asked for this. The script is so bad, so so bad.

Suicide Squad

Not good, but has potential for the sequel I guess if they hire someone to write a decent story. Some cool performances.

Sorry, Lager; the only answer the judges will accept for Suicide Squad is "It was pretty, but utterly and completely stupid."

One alternate for partial points is "I wanted to bang the witch" and/or "Harley."

Colossal takes a jokey, goofy premise that it not only treats it seriously (its still funny tho), but also wrings some surprising depth out of it. Its the alcoholism/toxic relationship/Kaiju/dramedy that absolutley no one has ever made before. Its inexplicably low profile may well make it the non-mainstream film of the year that all the normies beleatedly discover, but its a film that works well with modest expectations. It doesn't have a lot of big laughs, and even the darkest points in the film are leavened with the abstraction of its central conceit(slight demerit), but it does take those detours into weighty territory quite well and its even subtle in how it expresses its themes. Hell, its even got better special effects then you see in a lot of big ticket movies. Could it have been made a little better(some things feel a little underdeveloped), I suppose, but not much better. I found this to be a pretty good film.

Katana is pretty cool in the animated stuff and the arrowverse  :gaben

So I watched Life. Low spoiler mode.

The movie reminded me a lot of alien and it seems to have drawn some inspiration from it, reminded me a little of Prometheus as well with the silly way the scientists behaved when faced with the alien, speaking of the alien, that thing freaked me the fuck out! My skin was crawling every-time I saw it onscreen D: I didn't find the ending to be so surprising as others, solid 7/10 movie

So it's a short film made to bridge the two, or it's a separate feature-length film they're teasing?

I remember at one point Scott was doing Prometheus 2 and some other guy was doing a new Alien movie, then Prometheus 2 got dropped and Scott moved over to the new Alien movie [which then became a pseudo-Prometheus sequel]. So...yeah.

I believe the timeline was Neill Blomkamp came up with his Alien 3 do over movie. Shortly after, Ridley decided he wanted to do another Prometheus after all. Then, both movies went into some form of pre-production (very, very pre-production for the Alien movie), Fox liked whatever wino shit Ridley came up for Prometheus 2: Paradise Lost, the Blomkamp got forgotten, and then Paradise Lost was renamed Alien: Covenant.

At one point before Prometheus even came out, Ridley and that writer jerk off had said if they did a sequel, it would be even farther away from the original Alien than Prometheus, but since that dude wasn't involved in writing Paradise Lost, that idea never happened.

I would have really liked to see an Alien3 do-over movie, esp. by Blomkamp.

I guess I was subconsciously aware of this, and it's one of the reasons I don't like a whole slew of anime, but this video really hammers it home, and its differences from "manic pixie dreamgirl" trope.

Scott is ghost-GeorgeLucasing the Alien franchise.

Does it count when Fox already did as much as they could before hand?

Kind of. Scott seems to have late compulsions of being a control freak over his property and seems to be interested in filling up with unnecessary convoluted trash a backstory which didn't really need it.
The sequels and spinoffs, while often dreadful, was easier to shrug off if only because the original authorTM wasn't involved.

Scott's always been largely inconsistent, I'd argue. I'm a huge fan of his but he always made clunkers in between his classics, so while Prometheus might not have been worth making(I especially hate what they did to the space jockey), overall I thought it was ok. So the chances of greatness, mediocrity or just awful tripe with this one are the same as it has always been when it came to his movies.

Oh for sure, in a way I'm not even really about his visual talent (For all the laughs I had with Prometheus, there was some lovely visual designs and bits to it. The intro is pretty stunning too, though overall I don't think the whole is not as cohesive and good as the first Alien) or capacity to do interesting films (Not a big fan but there's bits of great stuff in some of his recent works). It's more that since Prometheus he seems hell bent on keeping a hold on it and his way to bulletproof his legacy this is actually packing to the gills the "mythology" with stuff no one really asked for (beyond the "Wow ! Who is the space jockey ?" which in hindsight is one of those bits that are better left alone, like Indiana Jones hat or Anakin's teenage years).

All that being said, I'm fine with being on the contempt train regarding Blomkamp.

Guardians of the Galaxy 2 was some good shit. I liked it better than the first which means it's my favorite movie in the MCU so far.

Nearly everything about it is handled better than the first. Character dynamics, comedic writing and timing, emotional moments, baby Groot. It's just a good ass fun movie.

Wizard and Glass is definitely the best and probably King's best work in general IMO.  Everything works in that book.  Songs of Susannah is just awful, awful shit.  I'm glad it's so short.  Wolves of the Calla is still good but a step down.

Kiyoshi Kurosawa must have been licking his chops when he signed the deal for Daguerrotype. "You mean I get full creative control, and I get to make a proper gothic ghost/romance tale, in frigging France even!? Hells yeah!" Its interesting to watch if you're at all familiar with the director's oeuvre, as its pretty much akin to his previous works in so many ways, but its also a distinctively French movie in as many. He gets to play around with ancient photography tech and Victorian dresses. As per usual, Kurosawa prejudices atmosphere and tone against narrative coherence, which is a flaw I'm willing to overlook. If you've ever been able to groove to Kurosawa's by now very practiced style (don't take a drink every time somebody stares into an empty room, you'll die) you'll probably dig this one, as I did.

I've not seen all of the Dardenne bros. films, but of those I've seen The Unknown Girl is their least great. This is not a slam, per se, as their social-realist dramas and pseudo thrillers are never not heart rending or completely gripping, but this one is a bit clumsier. It sometimes feels inauthentic, which is something that they've never done before. Its still a very good film though, and I honestly could have done with much more of the film's B-plot (a state service family doctor making her rounds to her impoverished patients) over the main thrust (murder mystery).

and my favorite film of this year's International Film Festival would be the very good, blackly comic, gritty and twisty Spanish daylight noir The Fury of a Patient Man. I'm really hoping this breaks out of the festival circuit so I can more easily recommend it to people, as its pretty much all around excellent. Visually well composed, great acting, man did I ever dig this film. I'd love to say more, but, you know, spoliers and all that. It kicked major arse in the Spanish film awards if that means anything to you (toke on that Almodovar).

2. Pulse
3. Charisma
4. The Cure
5. Tokyo Sonata
6. Bright Future
7. Seance
8. Sakebi/Retribution
9. The Guard from Underground

It's been a long time since I've watched most of these, but Guard from Underground is the only one that I'm kinda "meh" on. It's pretty much just a straight slasher flick, nothing that really stands out in particular. You're definitely in for a treat with Doppelganger, the way the movie morphs into something completely different about halfway through is really great. And definitely go find Charisma, it's easily the strangest of his movies I've seen.
