Watched GotG Vol 2 twice now, it's a pretty good movie and better than the first imo, but I have a very real feeling of Marvel fatigue and couldnt enjoy it as much as I would have say 5 years ago.

I realized I have Marvel fatigue when Civil War just fell flat on its face for me. I rented it the other day for a second viewing, but my son was uninterested and I couldn't muster the will past the first fight.

Still liking Agents of SHIELD, but movie-wise I'm starting to slow down.

The Netflix shows are better than the movies anyway. I say this as a guy who didn't really like Jessica Jones or Iron Fist.
So we're talking about Daredevil and Luke Cage?

We just finished season 3 of SHIELD last night, and I'm thinking about going for DD next.

I feel you, I'm not excited at all about watching GOTG 2 (although I still will) even though everything about it looks like a movie I should enjoy.

Not a lot of love in me for marvel mcu stuff but DD s1 and 2 are my favorite comic book stuff that are fairly new.

The Rover (2014) – Guy Pearce, Robert Pattinson. A surprisingly deep philosophical look at the human condition, and applying our own meaning to our lives, set against a dystopian future in rural Australia. Performances are perfect, from start to finish. Pattinson is underappreciated due to his unfortunate casting in the Twilight movies, he is wonderful in this as a highly dependent, slow-witted chump. Pearce is capable of so much, and I was so unhappy to see him as a cartoonish caricature in Iron Man 3. He preemptively redeems that, here. I've been a fan since Ravenous, and of course loved Memento; here, he's grizzled and determined, and several times able to move from fury to broken regret in the space of a single take.

Watched XXX3 on plane and even going for the B-movie feel it was kinda super mediocre, but good enough I guess.  Worst part was all the shooting got monatanous and Deisel felt like he was phoning it in compared to his F&F charisma.  Best parts were Donnie Yen and the fact one of the team member's skill set was DJ who uses his super DJ powers to fight  :lol

Also watched Fences and that is soooooo not a long flight movie.  Lots of great performances, but that movie felt five hours long.  It's incredibly slow.

I always feel like an idiot if I try to watch an action movie on one of those tiny, low contrast screens. I'll watch ones I've seen before, but when I watch a new movie on it, I feel like I haven't given it its due stage.

My general rule of thumb is anything that isn't going to have artistic cinematography is fine for planes.  Especially since they fuck with the aspect ratio a lot, art house stuff I generally save for video.  Dumb action movies are solid plane fodder.

Last year when I flew (or maybe a couple times back) I watched Imitation Game & Nightcrawler and that was pretty much the best flight ever since both were engaging A+ films.

I did catch up more on Masters of None on Netflix offline downloads and that show is really great.

So went to see Baahubali 2 (attached to the sober subtitle of "The conclusion") yesterday. First things first, the projection was shitty as all hell (a third on the screen on the left was darker than the rest, so obviously there was a straight vertinal line at the junction) and the subtitling was a rushed job (mistakes, a few isolated sentences in english, a couple of places with formatting error and the TC appearing on screen).

Also holy Jesus fucking Christ at that "commercial partners" (a solid 90 seconds of logos for the licensing, music, beverages, chocolates) preroll.

I thought I mentioned the first film here but can't locate the message, so here comes : Baahubali is a "Tollywood" (Telugu spoken productions, based in the city of Hyderabad) fantasy epic about a very nice, very strong & very just young man lured away of his modest home by love & destiny and who, alongs the way, discover he's the son of a hero and rightful heir to a rich and civilized kingdom currently under the yoke of his cruel uncle. By the end of the first film, he's given a pretty comprehensive flashback to his father's story and incredible accomplishments. So comprehensive in fact that the flashback runs through the second film for 4/5 of the runtime (I actually kind of forgot we were still in it).

The first film borrows a lot to post-300 fantasy aesthetics from Hollywood though there's probably some influence from China too (the sheer mind boggling quantity of extras and props reminded a bit of the better ones, likes Red Cliff). In this one they're straight up making their own (better !) version of the Two Towers. Both films are fairly light on the singing part, there's only a handful (maybe 2-3 ?) choreography numbers for each. Just saying for those who don't like them.

It's very VFX heavy and while it's sometimes crude in places I'd say it's actually quite a bit better than some of the excerpts of bid budget Chinese films I saw recently. Overall I found this second part even better than the first one. Excellent pacing (it's nearly 3 hours even in the shortened "international" version), better comedic bits (Baahubali Senior plays dumb to infiltrate the entourage of the princess he's in love with, toying with the vain, arrogant, harmless buffoon/cousin and attributing him his feats), utterly over the top action with beefy dudes and crazy visuals. We're making fun of "canon" and "lore" in that other thread and Baahubali dispenses itself of all his filler for the better :

*Hero finds scores of innocent people floating dead in a river*
"Oh yeah, there's a nomadic warring tribe who likes to do that roaming the region".

*30mn later*
"City is under attack !"
"It's nomadic warring tribe who likes to drown people !"

And that's pretty much it.

There's a point at the end where the action gets too much even within the context of an unbridled Indian epic but still a very enjoyable two-parter for me. It's maybe not the most sophisticated film of its kind but the Indian propensity to go for direct and sincere films is helping it a lot over similar US films.

It doesn't really count as new anymore, but I liked 2013's Europa Report. Was a lot more grounded and interesting than most other recent scifi movies with a similar setup.

The first hour of GotG2 is great then it falls off the cliff and loses it's momentum. I really wish they did a balls out comedy the whole way through, but instead the back-end is filled with a bunch of character stuff that feels inconsequential. The final action scene is largely unmemorable.

The story kind of boxed them into doing it that way, but the payoff wasn't really worth that sacrifice.

Just watched Europa Report as suggested by Great Rumbler.

spoiler (click to show/hide)
First things first, I'm pretty satisfied it ended the way it did. Even though I naturally root for astronauts to make it back home safely, it was nice with a change. They all died, but satisfying so, if I can call it that. The movie wasn't amazing, but it was pretty good, and I enjoyed it a lot. Maybe I'm getting used to long movies now a days, but I wish it had lasted longer than it did. Some more exploring before/during things going wack would've been cool.

I remember when Villeneuve was announced as director in early 2015 for a Blade Runner sequel and it felt like the general consensus was "His Prisoners movie was good but this is going to be a disaster"

In a post-Sicario and Arrival world, people are suddenly creaming themselves.  :doge

I love Sicario and Arrival but hate Prisoners, so there's that.
yeah I don't really like Prisoners either.

I was always down for a new Blade Runner as long as they nailed the look and aesthetics, which they did. The fact Villeneuve is awesome just gives me hope for a legit great movie too beyond the visuals. But we'll see.

I wish Blade Runner 2049 was a commercial for cars.

Also, it could be a lot worse, Wrath, we could be getting JJ Abrams' Blade Runner 2 with script by Orci and Kurtzman.

Saw GOTG Vol 2 and loved it. It was a fun time (though a bit hammy at times).
Was surprised to see a trailer for Wonder Woman and then I got home and saw a commercial for it as well. It's weird, in that GAF told me there was no marketing for that movie and yet here it is. Either I'm seeing things that don't exist, or maybe GAF doesn't understand what a marketing blitz is.

I think most super hero movies look like shite in ad form, and tend to give them the benefit of the doubt. That being said, I have 0% faith as to DC and its ability to execute a movie without Nolan. So it makes WW look 10x dumber. If word of mouth is good I'll go watch it, but I'm reserving judgement until others go see it.

I'm willing to give a non-Snyder DC movie the benefit of the doubt. I think the movie looks interesting other than probably forced romance shit, so I'll be seeing it shortly after release.

On a related note, I was kinda underwhelmed by Guardians 2.

Honestly, I don't get the whole "romance" angle they're taking. It makes no sense. Either they're including a romance for romance's sake, which doesn't fit with Wonder Woman, she don't need no man. Or they're using the love interest as the "earthling on mars" comedic relief trope (think the baker guy in Fantastic Beasts, or how Michael Bluth was the only one that things somewhat together in the first 3 seasons of Arrested Development).  But I don't see that working either. Fantastic Beasts it worked because the movie wasn't so much about Newt Scarmander, it was more about the events around him, the baker gave us a way to look into that. Michael Bluth worked because he grounded everything otherwise it'd just be silly people being silly and you needed him to provide the "straight man" to expound the comedy. Wonder Woman is about Wonder Woman, not about the events around her, and it's (hopefully) not a comedy. That romance bit is what worries me the most.

GOTG 2 I loved. But it was decidedly different than GOTG 1. All my friends asked if it was better than the first, when really it just felt like a different movie all together. Not that it's bad. It's just...different.

Everything new's been covered, so how about any of these:

Edge of Tomorrow (2014) - military sci-fi [time travel]
The World's End (2013) - sci-fi comedy
(cosign) Looper (2012) - neo-noir sci-fi thriller [time travel]
Attack the Block (2011) - sci-fi horror comedy

And then going back further you have Moon and District 9.

I hope you like it. It's not everyone's cup of tea. It's a great noir story with underpinnings in the nature of the human condition, with a combatitive stance toward its PKD source material.

Yeah, I'm digging the visuals. As for your spoiler, it's hilarious that the brand is actually still around. TDK, Pan-Am, and others have gone away. I enjoy that they're basically making this a divergent timeline.

for recent-ish great sci-fi, check out Under the Skin, cause its an amazing work of art. It was in my top three of 2014.

for fun, kinda retro styled yet contemporary sci fi stuff (what has science done?) check out Morgan. Its not entirely successful, but as a latter day, R-rated Outer Limits episode done up feature length, its good.

Already seen Under the Skin. :-*

Speaking of Sci-Fi, I re-watched the first Matrix movie this weekend, and I'm excited to keep watching them. It's been so long, I realized I didn't even remember any of the plots, only the iconic scenes/details.

Okay, here's some news--
There IS going to be another HELLBOY MOVIE.
It's going to be an R rated reboot directed by Neil Marshall (The Descent, Game Of Thrones) and staring David Harbour (Stranger Things) as Hellboy.
More news to come soon--

Though, to be honest, Reloaded is actually an alright movie and the highway scene is majestic. Revolution is just straight trash.

Reloaded is a good, not great movie.

I'm mainly watching them for nostalgia. Probably wouldn't have bothered if I hadn't seen them before.

I really thought Revolutions was better than Reloaded by a considerable margin. It doesn't have anything nearly so bad as the orgy scene.

The orgy scene is one bad scene in a decent movie. Revolutions is bad movie with, like, maybe one good scene.

Yeah I swallowed Reloaded hook, line and sinker back then. I was pretty hyped by all the nonsense stuff at the end (the joy of youth when you think baseless speculation is intelligence). Revolutions was a major letdown. In retrospect none of the films aged great but the Matrix is certainly iconic, despite (or because) of its flaws. The highway chase and the thousand Smiths fights were fairly striking. I'm not sure all the filler between those would be endearing on a rewatch.

for recent-ish great sci-fi, check out Under the Skin, cause its an amazing work of art. It was in my top three of 2014.

for fun, kinda retro styled yet contemporary sci fi stuff (what has science done?) check out Morgan. Its not entirely successful, but as a latter day, R-rated Outer Limits episode done up feature length, its good.

Wow, someone liked Morgan? I thought its front half was pretty good, but the Smart People Acting Stupid trope in over-effect really ruined it for me. And as much as I like Rose Leslie, her character was written as a complete dope who shouldn't have had the job she did.

Aside from the Russos, no one working in the MCU has really done anything on par with the Smallville fight in Man of Steel, or the Doomsday fight in BvS.
you had to take it one step too far

couldn't have said Batman smashing up the dudes in the warehouse

spoiler (click to show/hide)
the Smallville fight also has an underlooked and probably unintentional aspect to it that's kinda funny with all the hand wringing about the Metropolis fight's excess

the military does even less than Superman in trying to avoid collateral damage in the United States, strafing runs and launching missiles directly at a small town not to mention the general deployment of troops who casually open fire, even if it does have some aliens smashing it up...Superman at least saves the one soldier who falls and the guy from SVU

Superman also constantly tries to take the fight out of the town but he's overmatched

You guys are being cunts, there's definitely stuff the DC movies does better than the Marvel stuff (like cinematography) and I can see if people value those aspects more that they can enjoy the DC stuff more, that being said I dont really know many people with such narrow focus. Myself as an example, i love Prometheus although i know a lot about it is pure shit, but that's like one of like 5 movies I have such a narrow appreciation for.

p.s. Do not want another Hellboy  :donot
