Just got round to watching ‘Baby Driver’, and fucking loved it. Having everything set to a killer soundtrack pushes all my buttons.

the quality of Rodriguez's films fell off a cliff immediately after his marriage ended. Now I'm not saying he was never any good, but Its clear to me, in retrospect at least, that Rodriguez has always needed a good collaborator to lean on. Its the key difference between Machete (decent) and Machete Kills (dispiriting).

considering he's got James Cameron in his corner and perhaps the combined budget of his entire career up til now, it'll probably turn out okay.

Looks like Roger Rabbit. Why not just make the whole thing CG, instead of having the main character look silly in any scene with real actors?

Movie will probably be enjoyable for me, but bomb miserably.  :nothot man's not hot take

Strangers on a Train :unf :unf
Farley Granger :tauntaun :tauntaun
Patricia Highsmith  :-[   :-*
for reals, Farley Granger was kind of a badass. Dude was openly gay, in the 50's. Even in showbiz circles that was rare.

Speaking of gay themes, the Norwegian art-horror hybrid Thelma has a great idea that it doesn't fully exploit, but that's okay because it leaves room for somewhat obtuse symbolism, some trippy visuals, and intentional vagueness of plot and character. Not all the pieces fit together neatly here, but I found its messiness endearing. Thelma is a young woman who's just beginning her collegiate studies. She comes from a strict Christian background, and her newfound enthusiasm for knowledge that contradicts her beliefs, as well as her burgeoning desires for a classmate force her into a war within her own psyche. Her repression becomes laterally dangerous, neat trick that is. Its high-mindedness is an asset and a detriment, as not all of its ambiguity is entirely satisfying, and as a straight horror film its not actually that scary. But as a creative and inventive look at inner turmoil I appreciated it.

Now if Seth, Franco and co. could walk away from this film and develop more similarly grounded flicks.

Yeah, that's from the post-credits scene where Rey catches a ride to New York with the Guardians of the Galaxy and becomes a transgender, transracial black man and Thanos shows up and is like "Your lightsaber is powered by an infinity stone, give it to me!" and then Tony Stark shrugs at the camera is like "Here we go again, guys!" It's not really a spoiler though, because we saw in the trailer that Thanos is collecting the infinity stones.

Disaster Artist

Eh. Wish they took the opportunity to spend more time on Greg and Tommy's extremely bizarre relationship, which was easily the most fascinating part of the book. They both come off a little underwritten in the movie, especially Greg.

That said, I can understand why they probably wanted to push through that stuff and get to the fan service. If they were true to the book there's no way either Greg or Tommy could be sympathetic leads.

These were the spoilers that Manabyte was handing out last week, though, before anyone had seen the film. I doubt they're real.

Well the new spoilers last night were something like this:

spoiler (click to show/hide)
Everything he said (for the lazy ones): Kylo kills Snoke. Kylo is bad guy and remains dark at end. Rey is the Last Jedi at end and does not turn Dark. Leia lives till end. Luke dies at end. Yoda convinces Luke to train Rey. Resistance is in disarray at end. Lots of humor that some fans will hate. No melted vader helmet. No kylo helmet after he smashes it. Didn’t notice any new lightsabers. Rey’s lightsaber was destroyed. Kylo and Rey team up for a ROTJ moment. Rey refuses to turn Dark. Luke dies in a different way, his lifeforce is drained from him. Rey’s parents are Junk dealers and left her. She is no one really. Just strong in force. Starts with big space battle and resistance being tracked by First Order. Movie leaves door open for #9 to go anywhere it wants too. Hux lives. Phasma dies. Luke fights Kylo in a scene where his life force is drained. This will be debated. Porgs and aliens are comic relief. Lots of humor. Might not sit well with some fans. Luke spends half of movie not wanting to help. Yoda appears and advises him to train Rey. Luke sacrificed his life R2 did show the hologram. After that yoda talked to Luke. It feels like yoda was the one that convinced Luke though. Finn fights phasma and she dies in the fight. He beats her and then she falls to her death Nothing really about romance with Finn/Rey. Kylo does not show up to Achto and get Rey to join him. Kylo and Knight of Ren never show up at Achto where Luke and Rey are training. Snoke is not Force vampire. Snoke does not drain Luke of any power. Force Tree is in the movie. Yoda tells Luke he can burn it. The books do not play any major part. Rey does not even read them. No big deal. While on Achto Snoke allows Rey and Kylo to talk through force so you think these two are Brother and Sister or related but this turn out not to be true. But does lead to Kylo betraying Snoke and taking Control at end. Rey is the NEW JEDI at end and Kylo is the DARTH VADER BAD Guy at end. Also Rey learns that her parents were junk dealers who left her on Jakku. She is a nobody. Kylo fate left up to interpretation. He did save Rey so does he still have good in him? Again I think Leia in 9 would have been the redeemer. I think Luke being able to project himself across the galaxy is the Lucasfilm “BIG TWIST MOMENT” in the film and then he dies. Sad. But still no “real” Luke battle. There is scene where all these weapons get fired at Luke in Final Battle and you think he’s toast. But after dust settles he is still standing...because he is projection. I guess that makes him the most powerful Jedi ever or its a convenient plot point. Yes. Kylo is super bad at end. Luke is drained of Force and dies from Projecting. It’s the big reveal that he was all the time on Actto and not really there or was he?!? It’s a new force power. No backstory on Snoke. Snoke dies: Kylo cuts him in half. Finn beats Phasma but she falls to her death. Poe takes control of resistance from Holdo Rey rescues the resistance hero’s at end by using force to move stuff to help them make last minute escape. They take off in Falcon. End. Also, scene of Luke fishing with 50 foot spear on Achto and spearing big fish, guess we needed to see the day and life of Luke while in hiding. Laura Dern she is made leader after Leia is hurt. her plan is to outrun the FO. Then she wants to evacuate the Resistance from ships and escape. Poe say hell no lets mutiny. Leia comes back and says escape is good plan and they escape to red salt planet. She takes her big ship and turns it on Snoke’s ship and rams it and slices it in half. This allows Finn to beat Phasma and hero’s to escape Snoke’s ship. Luke uses a blue colored lightsaber during projected battle with Kylo at end. Not green. Green saber is seen in two Flashback scenes Humor: Porgs and chewbacca. Luke throws lightsaber away. Luke scolding R2 for language. Leia sucked out into space and gets frozen and flies back to ship like superman. Blue Milk Slugs Kylo tell Rey that her parents are junk dealers. Those two scenes are cut back and forth. Its crazy. Snoke treats Kylo like his bitch. That is why he destroys his helmet and turns on him at end. Luke is really grumpy old Jedi and his training of Rey has some humor in it. He really does not want to do it. And makes sarcastic remarks, like “ok, Lesson One is....”. I think its because he does not believe in the Jedi way. In the end, Luke shows up and its a big “Let’s Get Ready to Rumble Moment”. He tells FO and Kylo to stop the attack on base. All weapons are pointed at him and shoot. After dust clears, he is still standing and brushes dirt off his robe like “Is that the best you got?” Kylo then goes to fight him. Rey saves the day and rescues the trapped hero’s in the Base while Luke fights Kylo. She uses force to move boulders out of the way. They escape on Falcon. When Luke dies, he disappears on Achto and just his robes remain like Obi Wan and Yoda. No Force Ghost of him appears. Yoda appears and its definitely a puppet and not CGI. The blue ghost haze is not that great. He tells Luke that part of life is failing and picking yourself up. So the fact that the Academy failed is just a step in life. So get off your ass and get to work. Burn that stupid Jedi tree if you want, something like that. Snoke wants Kylo and tortures Rey. He knows they are talking through the force. He says he allowed it. He tells Kylo to kill her. I do not remember Anakin being discussed in detail and he does not appear. Vader is mentioned. He tortures Rey. Think ROTJ. Instead of Luke force grabbing saber, It’s on stand next to Snoke. Kylo uses Force to turn on and it strikes Snoke then he forces it to cut him in half. Pretty cool scene. The biggest WTF moment is Luke miking the slugs for blue milk. Del toros character (DJ) does betray them. I can’t really remember what he exactly does. I think he clued in the first order he was on the ship. Could be wrong on that Maz does not have big role nor C-3PO, nothing stands out.
Summarised Synopsis: Resistance is blown to hell at beginning. There is a plot of about tracking to lightspeed so Resistance will not go to lightspeed. Entire movie is FO chasing Resistance. Finn are dispatched to find how not to track in lightspeed. Finn and Rose and BB-8 goes to Casino looking for Code Cracker to get him onboard to disable tracking device of FO. Poe is till hot shot pilot and goes rogue pilot and blows up missle/air defenses. Leia is pissed at him and demotes him for going Rogue. He causes mutiny and towards end of film but helps Resistence escape to planet. Luke uses his lightsaber in two flash back scenes. Rey leaves Luke and goes to fight Kylo. HUMOR Porgs are everywhere. Chewbacca accidentally kills one and almost eats one. Three porgs show up with sad eyes and he does not. Battle between Rey and Kylo is not final battle of movie. Kylo kills Snoke. Kylo and Rey team up. Rey does not turn. Rey escapes. Reys lightsaber is destroyed and does not have one at end. Final battle is between Luke and Kylo but Luke is still on Achto and projecting his image and never leaves Achto. He has so much Force power to project himself. He dies at end. Force drained. Luke does talk to Leia but its his projected image. Kylo is super evil at end. Luke should have killed him when he had a chance at academy or will he be redeemed in #9. Movie ends with everyone on Falcon reunited Rey, Leia, Poe, Finn, R2, Chewbacca, BB-8. Resistance is really done. Rey does not have lightsaber at end. But can retrieve Luke’s on Achto. Also movie ends with Leia alive so 9 should have been her movie most likely converting Kylo back to good side. No sure where they will go with that now.

Its a comedy, a dark comedy. But Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri isn't dark because of the bad behavior its characters exhibit (although there is plenty of that), its dark because everybody is grappling with their own personal failures, grief, or some other human fraility or dissapointment. Its a hilarious movie, but also a surprisingly emotional one, and its never even a little bit cloying. Martin McDonagh's In Bruges pulled a similar, meloncholic trick. Its exceedingly well acted, pleasingly unpredictable, and pretty great. But firstly, its funny, it just happens to be serious about it.

I mostly really liked it. It's a dark comedy about the futility of closure or redemption that doesn't feel cynical, and despite the broad dialogue the characters' pain still comes across as something that matters. A lot of that is the acting, which is really good.

spoiler (click to show/hide)
Wasn't so keen on how quickly Sam Rockwell's character turned around, and how the black characters were there in the end to validate him and Frances McDormand. Yeah, I know, but they made such a big point of bringing up that plotline repeatedly, then just hand him a redemption arc (which ends in failure but he still has Lester Freamon telling him "he did good." Also Mildred's coworker showing up all happy after getting out of jail, instead of pissed off, which didn't even fit with the overall theme of the people around Mlidred being hurt by her crusade.

Disaster Artist was great! Different from the book in a lot of ways, but I think that had to be done to make the movie. Franco as Tommy was just perfect. Lazy eye, accent, weird mannerisms, everything was on point. The post-credits cameo was worth staying for as well. Baby Franco and the rest of the cast killed it as well. Really recommend it.

I really liked Ladybird. I was really hoping she would drown Kyle in the scene by the pool.

I've seen The Room once and don't remember much about it, and my wife has never watched it. Would Disaster Artist be worth our time?

Green Lantern, with Ryan Reynolds, was supposed to be the start of the shared universe followed by The Flash and Wonder Woman. Then it came out. They kicked around that Justice League: Mortal thing for years as the other option.

So then they panic gave everything to Nolan who didn't want anything to do with it, who turned it over to Goyer, who teamed up with Snyder. Snyder seems to have been more interested in adapting The Dark Knight Returns for a sequel, which rather than seeing that as a natural endpoint for the Nolan-related series of "realistic" films they decided was the perfect launchpoint for the entire universe. Even though they had and still don't have any idea what they're doing with it as evidenced by well, the entire schedule and plans that they have announced.

Now Snyder is completely out and they fired the dude in charge of DC Films. And they have more Suicide Squad sequels/spin-offs in the works than anything it seems like. It's a pretty amazing clusterfuck, especially since they don't seem to have a clue what to do with their two biggest names in Superman and Batman, even though Cavill and Affleck are still signed to do films but nobody seems interested in either one actually playing the characters again. And their other big fanboy thing in Dwayne Johnson's Black Adam has been pushed back again and again to where it's TBD now and he's not in the Shazam movie. But at least that Cyborg film* is still holding down that Spring 2020 slot in their schedule unmoved unlike The Flash film and the now absent Justice League 2 and the next Superman. :rejoice

*which has no writers attached, no story/script, no directors even mentioned for it, etc. but Ray Fisher is focusing on the big picture:
Quote
Speaking to ComicBook.com at a press event for Justice League, Fisher compared the potential upcoming Cyborg film to that of Marvel Studios' Black Panther, which is largely comprised of black actors and filmmakers.

"I think the cast should be diverse in everything we do," Fisher said. "And I think the crew, equally importantly, should be as diverse. The representation at every level, I think it needs to be adhered to. Because a lot of the decisions being made, you may have actors of a certain ethnicity portraying the parts, but you also want people making sure that culturally, in particular with Black Panther, because they're building a whole universe, it makes sense."

Fisher sees the Black Panther film as having needed a slew of black actors to create its world. "They're building a whole culture," Fisher said. "Building an entire culture." It's something he hopes can influence the Cyborg movie wherever applicable. "With Cyborg specifically, I don't necessarily think it's about his particular story," Fisher said. "It isn't about black or white. I think the story is about being human, and what that means. And you can have anybody telling that kind of story."

Speaking of, I did finally see Justice League last night. Assorted random thoughts.

- This movie felt like if someone took a blockbuster script generator and swapped the names for DC heroes. Which is a HUGE step up from MoS and BvS, actually. But it really does feel like Batman Forever-era Warner Bros. trying to make a DC tentpole. Needless to say, this is streets behind basically every Marvel movie except maybe Iron Man 2 or Thor 2.

- Superman feels like Superman! As the biggest DC fan here (shut up benji I am), that was the best thing about the movie, easily. He even feels more like Superman than Routh did. We're back to cheesy Reeves Superman just like it should be baybee! 8) "All that matters is truth!" "I like truth. But I also like justice!" :lol YES 👏🏻

- Supes' suit also looks ridiculously vibrant compared to before and everyone else (see the "red" on Wonder Woman's outfit and compare to the "red" on Superman's.)

- I didn't expect to dislike Ezra Miller as much as I did. He's shrill, annoying, and not funny.

- Literally all the quips and best dialog are in the trailer, which decreased my enjoyment immensely.

- Holy shit Steppenwolf was flatter than a piece of cardboard.

- So glad this thing was only 1.5 hours. Yeah I could tell a lot was cut but after the atrocity of BvS (especially the still-just-as-bad-but-way-longer Extended Cut), this was very welcome.

- Cyborg was sooooooo bland. I'm glad they showed him getting a more costume-appropriate look (which I guarantee was a reshoot) at the end, but holy shit did they go overboard on the stupid angst. Also I guess he can just hack literally everything without even trying? It's a cool power but took me out of the movie a bit, especially him overhearing Bruce talking about him. That they took one of the most boisterous and animated characters from the Teen Titans cartoon and reduced him to... this... is heartbreaking.

- I like this version of Alfred slightly more than Michael Caine tbh. J Jonah Jameson as Jim Gordon also shows promise.

- I know people are split but I dug Aquaman. The worst part about him is his entire backstory is super rushed, more so than Flash and Cyborg's.

- The Green Lantern tease was pretty cool.

- It's a shame that I'm so uninvested in this universe outside of Wonder Woman, because if, say, Steve Rogers died in the MCU and then came back, I'd probably get somewhat emotional at him reuniting with Bucky, Falcon, Nat, etc. In this movie I felt almost nothing when Lois Lane and Ma Kent met back up with Clark.

Overall, I think this movie was somewhat of a chore to get through (mostly because the one liners which make the exposition go down easier are all in the trailers), but it's competent as a movie, and much closer to the vision of DC I've always had in my head. Superman in particular is a huge boost of confidence for that aspect of this universe. If they can keep Snyder away from this shit, it might be salvageable.

Oh yeah and the CG de-mustachification was worth a giggle or two but didn't really take me out of things too much.

Yeah it's a real treat if you remember The Room, but if not it's still a funny and weird buddy comedy type of movie. My wife had never seen The Room and she really enjoyed the movie and was laughing throughout it.

spoiler (click to show/hide)
Also at the end it shows recreated shots from Disaster Artist and The Room side by side for comparison, and The Room scenes are still hilarious

Rian Johnson's epic masterpiece was clearly too cerebral for American audiences.
