There aren't a lot that are pretty universally recognized in the top 20 greatest of all time though. It's about on the level of saying you've never seen The Godfather imo.

I haven’t seen either of those  :)

The Quiet Place in my book, it's in the same realm of quality as Mad Max: Fury Road. Which is very good company.
That's a bold fucking statement.

I'll remember you and this post when i go see the movie.

A Quiet Place was pretty good. Reminded me a bit of It Comes at Night x Signs. Better and much better than both of those though. Great tension from start to finish and constant creative scenarios for the characters to go through. Some really good special effects for a 15 million budget and I thought Krasinski and the daughter actress gave real good performances.

Great soundtrack too. When your movie is essentially a silent film, the soundtrack will make or break it and the soundtrack was good. Good direction/cinematography too. Just a well made quality film all around.

Interested in A quiet place but it seems like the kinda thing I'd enjoy more at home, to those of you that watched it, does seeing it at the cinema add anything I cant get at home? (except rabies from the fat kid in the seat next to me)

I’ve meant to check out The Mummy. I’ve heard it’s so obsessed with setting up a half dozen “other movie” pieces of its universe and it sounds like it has to be a strange mess.
It's so bad. I watched it on a plane and I didn't finish it, but I was at a part that felt maybe the movie was finished.

I got stoned and watched Justice League the other night. It's not pure trash like Batman v. Superman, but it aint great. Cyberman or whatever looked like a character from a 90s straight to dvd movie.

Don't think it'd make a difference. But I can't think of many "must see in theater" movies besides like Blade Runner 2049 for the visuals.

Yikes, those bikinis.  :yuck

Watched The Martian. Man, it never ceases to amaze just how little of the content of a book can be transfered onto the big screen without sharting out some hugely expensive Lord of the Rings style mega opus. At least, it toned down the gratuitous NASA/US/Mars colony masturbation a tiny bit. Still, much of the actual science was glossed over. For some reason, I really miss that part near the end where the crew was prepared to commit suicide to allow the youngest member to survive in case of a critical mission failure, if necessary even by resorting to cannibalism. Really drove home just how fucked the situation was, in the book. In the movie everything is just smooth sailing all the way back. Never really went beyond slight inconvenience with immediate and instantaneous five second brainstorming solution.

Also, that piece of the antenna that impaled him was waaaay too small. In my imagination, he was skewered like a shish kebap. Oh well. Still fun. Maybe because I have a slight dislike of the actor? I mean, his character is supposedly in severe distress throughout the movie... *thinkingemoji.jpg*

Plus, jeez, the zero g shots inside are TERRIBAD. Cripes.  ::)

Afterwards, watched Deadpool for the 12409182642806th time. My kind of humour. I dread the sequel, but that's just me being my usual pessimistic self. I'm sure it will be fine. Yeeeeep. However, even if it's fine, I'm kinda all tuckered out on comic movies. Not like I've watched all that many.

Tomorrow, I'm gonna brave the non-depths of German cinema. I plan on watching "Willkommen bei den Hartmanns". Someone persuade me to watch something else.

Great film about the Fins fighting the Russians in WW2. Seeing the ill equipped fins beat the ruskies is fun but there's some genuinely good drama on display as well.

I mean I liked it the first time, but it was funny because the jokes were unexpected or raunchier than you'd think of a comic book movie.  I can't see them being funny when you know them ahead of time.
Nah, I still chuckle at the thought of avocados grudgefucking each other.
I'm a simple type.

Plus, I can't even count how often I watched Fifth Element or certain other Bruce Willis or Arnold Schwarzenegger movies for example. Or the various Terrence Hill & Bud Spencer movies. Or Rocky Horror Picture Show. I'm highly resistant to repitition when it comes to a certain kind of movie. I'm suspecting it's a inherently German sickness.

It's like comfort food. Or old wrestling footage. You know exactly what's gonna happen, yet it still entertains. No, it might even entertain BECAUSE you know what's gonna happen.

Terrence Hill & Bud Spencer is funny no matter how many times you've seen it though, the physical humour doesn't rely on shock or being clever.

I only saw the first two and what I remember was by 2 they were already doing alternate angle retcon flashbacks like it was the 8th movie in a franchise.

And it gets even more ridiculous from there. Like every movie’s ending recontextualizes the ending (or large portions) of a previous movie in the series series in increasingly silly ways. It’s impressively hokey.

The Hitman's Bodyguard: I didn't really expect much out of this, but was surprised at how dull it was. You'd think a Sam Jackson/Ryan Reynolds buddy movie would be funnier. Roughly 90% of the humor is LOL SAM JACKSON SAID MOTHER FUCKER LOOOOOOOOOOL. A couple of actions seems seem like they'd be cool but they're ruined with shitty editing and all of the effects look like they were done in After Effects. Lots of really obvious CGI for no reason, lots of really bad chroma keying for no reason other than I assume Sam Jackson was only on hand to shoot for a handful of days. Almost every shot of him that isn't a set is very clearly green screen. It's weird. It seems like it'd cost more to edit around that than to pay him to fly to wherever.

It's okay to watch on HBO if you came to it like 15 minutes in and then barely paid attention the rest of the movie.

I agree 100%. This seems like it was a no-brainer, and that’s probably how it got green-lit. It was remarkably by-the-numbers. By no means offensively bad, just “how did they make it this boring?“

I like Beirut just fine, but its almost certain vault into obscurity strikes me as no surprise. Its got Jon Hamm's best film performance by a mile, playing a handsomely disheveled (guy makes being a souse an artform) arbitrator navigating some really tricky geo politics in 1982 Lebbanon. It avoids falling into the traps that so many other films do when their backdrop is some complex and conflicting set of loyalties and motivations, but then it doesn't sketch in its characters all that much other than Hamm's intelligent booze hound. Its like a knock off LeCarre, but a pretty good one. Talky, low action, densley plotted yet still navigable. It goes against the current, and the empty theater I saw it in doesn't often reward such qualities.

Decided to watch x3 the last stand again holy shit this movie is dumb af. Especially the end showdown where people just kinda stand around until it’s their turn to do something. Dsrk Phoenix was the worst offender.

Tho Kelsey Grammer deserves more props for Beast. God tier performance tbh.
