Panos would clearly be amazing for a remake of this

Panos should make a Ghoulies-esque movie about the Cheddar Goblin.

EDIT: Looks like someone had the same idea

Panos sure did bounce back from Beyond The Black Rainbow with Mandy, didn't he? Loved it.

Some of his weaknesses from Beyond do peek through, though. Some shots and sequences go on for far too long, namely. When that technique works, it works really good, but when it doesn’t, it totally kills the pacing and my ability to pay attention.

It's not really a bounce back, since Beyond the Black Rainbow was his very first movie. More like just normal growth from a cool but very rough first outing.

House with a clock in the walls was frustrating. Set design is amazing, the leads are terrific (Jack Black and Cate Blanchett) but everything else is pretty poor.

The visual look is incredible though, if you're someone that enjoys that aspect of movies it's worth a recommendation.

First was nearly traumatizing. It didn't seem like there was room for a second.
Yeah well this is hollywood it's all about franchises. We'll see a third one for sure.

edit: Sicario- "It is the first installment of Sheridan's trilogy of "the modern-day American frontier".

Wulp, nevermind i guess Sheridan always had a trilogy in mind.

double edit: It's such a fucking bummer Johan Johansson died so early. He was on his way to become one of the best in the business. His scores for Sicario, Arrival, Mandy, were all integral parts of those films. It's such a fucking shame we won't be getting more from him.

Saw The Predator. It was fine. Not great, but not too bad. I had fun. I went in expecting a action movie with some gore and jokes and that's what I got. Which I guess may be a problem, but to me The Predator suffer's the same problems(to worse extent) that the Alien movies do in that the monster is not scary anymore. Unless you're getting an intense reinvention I'm not sure what you do beyond make another Pred movie, which this is. So that may be good and bad at the same time. The cast and characters are likable and that helps. I don't hold the original up highly, but again the cast is what makes that movie. As well as the tense hunt. here the hunt seems rushed and tacked on, but maybe that describes the movie in a nutshell. It's rushed, not really allowing time for it to breathe or to know the characters. The original does, but here the movie takes it too far. To the point where parts of the movie seem missing and you'll wonder how did they get that, where did those characters go, and how did they get there? The editing is pretty bad often leading to those questions.

Still it's fun and the violence is good. The evolution plot is dumb, but whatever. It's just another Pred movie, but one that knows how to have fun. Which i would say is missing from the other movies in this series.

But since you know Shane Black is in on the joke of the movie you kind of expect him to be a little bit smarter and go beyond that. I don't think he does.

How the FUCK do you think that's a possessive noun?

:umad

One Cut of the Dead / カメラを止めるな! On Cormacaroni's advice, I went and saw this with Sho Nuff and a couple non-Boreans in Roppongi last night. It's a zombie movie, except it's not. It's a very clever movie with some surprising turnaround moments. I can't say much more without ruining it, so I'll just say you should see it.

Solo was dogshit. i'm honestly surprised the reactions to this were so positive. it's pretty much the most paint by numbers story you can imagine, which makes an already completely unnecessary and superfluous movie feel somehow even less consequential, and apart from that there are a a million little aggravating or stupid things that pop up along the way. the acting is bad, the score is ever-present, totally overbearing and sub-par at best, there's a hilariously poorly executed and unsubtle Chekov's Gun (the big bad hands a knife to one of his lackeys, says "that might come in handy later, hand onto this for me" and then looks directly into the camera and gives a big ol' wink and a thumbs up). just a thoroughly grating and dumb experience.

still not as bad as Rogue One though.

But that's every Disney production now.

Reminds me of this

Like the millenial whoop totally killed pop music in the last 10+ years, this "wink to the audience" type of shit already killed every single superhero movie after Dark Knight.

Here's my pitch.

Remake Children of Men, except in the 11th hour we discover that "something" (aliens) has tinkered with our DNA making us infertile. Much like we are doing with mosquitoes in labs, they did to us.

Then at the end, you see that light flash on our last hope and you don't know if it's salvation ... or them.

Johnny Mnemonic: Lol. :lol Such exquisitely mid 90s classic trash that stands shoulder to shoulder with legends like Judge Dredd and Demolition Man. This was probably made better since I watched it on Pluto, and it definitely was not bluray quality, or even HD streaming quality. Reminded me of watching movies like this on TNT on a 20inch CRT in 1997.  :lawd

It's really quite bad, but in an enjoyable way. Keanu is generally not the strongest actor, but this might be his worst performance in anything I've seen with him outside of Bram Stoker's Dracula. But it's okay, because he's Keanu, and I always enjoy Keanu. I'm sure I'd have enjoyed this a bit more had I seen it when I was a lot younger, so I'd have the same nostalgia that comes with Judge Dredd and Demolition Man. I feel like if there was a bit more budget, and a few better actors, it could have aged a bit better. It's SO 1995, though, which is a treat.

i watched speed on the plane to vietnam and it was the 4x3 pan and scan heavily censored TV edit and it all added to the nostalgia.
