Can't wait to see this. It's a WW1 documentary directed by Peter Jackson. They have restored 100 year old footage, increased the frame rate (original 10 fps) and colourised it. It looks amazing.

Stallone explained back in September 2009, “It’s a feral monster. It’s a… thing. It’s this amalgamation of fury and intelligence and pure, unadulterated rage. It’s before men became… hu-men. This is when they were still inhuman. And so, what [Rambo] confronts is something that is everyone’s nightmare. He’s going against a feral beast that has absolute cunning and intelligence and a will to survive that is only matched by Rambo’s.”

First Man

I really dug this. Armstrong is portrayed as stoic but I don't believe it was glamorized. It absolutely effected every aspect of what he touched for better or worse. The mission was paramount.

People seem to be critical of the home life aspects but I feel they contrasted very well with the high stakes of the Gemini program and Apollo. It also clearly informed the viewer of what was truly at stake and the price that was ultimately paid to get on the moon.

Finally the cinematography and score were absolutely stunning. Theres one shot where I wanted to stand up and clap it was so good. The score itself had this strange warble that helped set it apart from your typical triumphant swell. There were moments where it elevated a scene so much.

And the genre needs to be as misogynistic as it used to be. None of today’s PC shit. Nudity and explicit violence and naked explicit violence and no plots.

Terrifier on Netflix is probably a good template.

So my take on Halloween 2018 is that it was alriiiiight enough I guess. Feels like it could’ve been a great movie but needed a better writer. The beginning setup is great and the end mostly hits it right with good tension and fun on the premise, but the middle section is an ADHD 2018 horror film where the kill count has to be astronomical because if someone isn’t getting killed every 3 mins the audience will get bored.

Because of this the middle of the movie lacks tension, scares and is more just sorta a gore kill film which was a bit zzz and also takes the already superhuman Myers to the point of ridiculousness and absurdity instead of trying to be more grounded like the premise suggests.

Still enjoyed it, but wasn’t as good as I’d hoped from the reviews and trailers.

Saw Bad Times at the El Royale and I liked it but man it could've used some editing. The pacing is all over and the tone is the same too. I think it never manages to figure out what it's tone is. It's not serious and it's not silly and it just kinda floats around awkwardly between. Some scenes really work, but a certain death scene near the end does not because it's directed in a serious way when the film isn't that way so it's just like uhhhh why is this dragging on.

Definitely worth a watch and some fun bits like the psycho anime loli girl trope, but it's definitely Goddard trying to pull off Tarantino and he's not Tarantino. I think he should stick to more comic tone like Cabin in the Woods and The Martian. Like Hemsworth's role here could've been a lot funnier since Hemsworth is a comic genius at timing and delivery but they play him a bit too straight which is  :'(

Speaking of incompetence.

Ocean's 8

This was a George lucas prequel type movie. One of those perplexing things where you're like "How did this pass a script test?" So many stupid mistakes. That anyone with a basic look that wasn't up their ownass would be like "Yeah, how's about we don't do the stupid thing?"

How does it escape you that it is meant to be GOOFY. Incompetent means they don't know what they are doing. They are hardly incompetent filmmakers .

It's astonishing to me that a lot of what the Wachowskis do goes over peoples heads and I'm not talking from a hard to grasp storyline perspective. I"m talking about the way they tell their stories, how it is presented. Jupiter Ascending IS SUPPOSED to be campy and goofy but they do it with sincerity.

I think it's the sincerity part that throws people off. People get mad about that, or simply do not connect and find it too 'stupid'. I think Marvel is mainly to blame for that shit........also somewhat Christopher Nolan.

You either have to make a dark gritty film with on the nose explanations for EVERYTHING, or one that winks at the audience like "hey we know this shit is stupid"  or else a lot of the audience gets insulted and turned off.

Jupiter Ascending is not a bad film. The biggest problem with it isn't the dialogue, or how cheesy it is, it's the pacing. The pacing is off. That is  one thing that the Wachowskis can be blamed for having a fault with. They've never seen to recover form The Matrix in terms of pacing. The Matrix was perfectly paced, everything else after had pacing problems.

The Matrix > Speed Racer > All other Wachowski movies
See, Speed Racer is a movie that got trashed when it was released. And I still don't click with it (I find it too long and the pacing is probably the worst after Jupiter Ascending) but it is now considered like a "woah" hidden masterpiece by a bunch of younger audiences.

Yeah people can't see the craziness in that and enjoy themselves.

Like I said it either has to be Marvel levels of stupid self-parody/ bathos

or

it has to be Christopher Nolan bleak seriousness with on the nose exposition.

The Kindergarten Teacher (Netflix)

What a harrowing tale of obsession towards your own ideals. A lot of aspects to take away concerning what it is you want to be and what you actually are and projecting this onto the world, onto people.

I also dug the meditation on the purpose of art, and the fostering of it in this modern world. The final scene made my stomach drop.

Some of the movies I've seen in recent weeks.

Hereditary. Well-acted movie that I can see why lots of people liked and I have no personal major complaints about, but for whatever reason, it didn't connect with me the same way. The plot is very intricate but the twists and turns felt a little weird to me and made me feel disconnected. I wish I liked it more than I did because it has some neat elements in it, especially the performance from Toni Collete. I think I just prefer Rosemary's Baby a lot more.

Upgrade Hadn't heard of this one at all until a friend mentioned it. It's a low budget sci-fi movie which is generally a thing right up my alley but this movie annoyed me. It should have been a fun robo-cop meets the matrix, meets john wick mash-up. And it has elements of all those things, but it never stitches it together effectively. It should have just picked like one thing and focused on it but instead feels like it has its finger in 3 or 4 better movies it wants to be. I respect the low budget hustle. I just wish it was better.

Dead Pool 2 I didn't like it nearly as much as the first movie and for large stretches I wasn't sure I liked this one at all. It has its moments. They are too few and far between unfortunately. Basically I wish the movie was a lot smarter. The jokes feel like family guy style riffs on movies, pop-culture, and etc. And irreverent is always a good thing but you need to combine that with some smarts. The message of the movie is also really weird. It's basically about protecting the purity of a kid, while they go about killing anything that moves. It's a weird combination that undermines itself. Overall its okay. It wasn't a pain to watch or anything and there are a few laughs to be had but unlike the first movie, I doubt I will ever see this one again in my lifetime.

You are forgetting V for Vendetta. They wrote it, and directed a lot of the action scenes/ if not helped direct most of it. Rumors were they didn't want to do something so closely related to the Matrix so they allowed their second unit director to helm it even though they were mainly responsible for most of it.

It's sad they have no projects at work but hopefully a long break is what they need to refresh. I hope they come back with some low budget stuff like Bound.

They have made more culturally impactful films than any other directors in the last decade and I think their movies will age really really well while all this other shit fails.

They made A culturally impactful film. Singular. And it wasn't in the last decade. It actually wasn't even in the last 2 decades. But that's still more than what the vast majority of film makers get in their careers.
Matrix and V for Vendetta have been two of the most culturally impactful movies in the last 2 decades.

V for Vendetta is culturally impactful to some real fucking nerds on 4chan
That mask has been everywhere since the movie. A long with a ton of quotes and the entire concept of the movie, really. Its referenced constantly.

But yes online culture definitely embraced it the most.

Psycho has pretty much everything possible going for it, including one of, if not the greatest, title sequences of all time. It's nuts to think someone made something so vital and fresh when they were 61.

Gotta give a shout out to my boy, Yoshiaki Kawajiri, the main reason that anime used to be good.

Watched It Follow's on Halloween. Thought it was a pretty good movie. I think all the readings of it being about STDS and whatnot are pretty wrong. I saw the movie to be really about rape and the aftermath of it.

Psycho (1960)

(Image removed from quote.)

I watched this not part of Halloweiner festivities, but as part of a Hitchcock collection I picked up at my library. It's a 15 disc set and broken into 3 parts so it will take a bit to get through these, even if I've seen quite a few of them.

Janet Leigh :mouf

Anthony Perkins was such a handsome young feller :mouf And his on a dime changes are so demonic :jeanluc

The parlor scene :lawd

Wish Marion's plot went a little longer, she was a lot more interesting than Lila. In a TV world, her story could have gone like 4-5 hours worth. I only saw about 10 minutes of the first ep of the TV show, but apparently Rhianna plays Marion Crane in it?  :doge

The wrap up by the psychologist is and always has been :trash
