Is Branagh's Hamlet any good?

Really good. Probably the best adaptation of Hamlet, you'll probably never see another one done "epic" like it. His Henry V is really good too but Hamlet is Hamlet right lol.

What's worse is most of the time you can tell it's a really shitty After Effect or something.

Will always give credit for the people who go through the trouble of recording VHS style footage off an actual VHS, like Mega64.

Yeah. This is the reason I mentioned it:

The film, 'Don't Grow Up' basically starts like this. lol

I mentioned 'Sweet, Sweet, Lonely Girl' earlier, well, 'Sun Choke' is another weird ass movie. Both movies are weird, but they share a lot of other similarities as well. Both movies have an element of abuse from an older parental figure, and both have a sense of imprisonment or a feeling of being held back in some way from living the life they want to lead. Both movies also have more of a 'show don't tell' philosophy where nothing is really explained. Which is also why I don't really know what the fuck is going on half the time in either movie (lol). I kind of like that type of movie though.

I will say, I could at least make a little more sense out of Sun Choke, than I could Sweet, Sweet, Lonely Girl. The girl in Sun Choke is clearly not right in the head, for whatever reason. Although the girl in the other movie perhaps isn't right in the head either. The point is anyway, the girl in Sun Choke shows behaviour consistent of someone who is seriously mentally ill. So I figured that what was going on is just a skewed sense of reality from someone who is mentally ill.

I liked both movies though.

Have taken a break from movies recently. Watched the Jordan doc The Last Dance which was extremely entertaining to me and also watched a few history documentaries.

Thinking of watching The Witch as that was something I wanted to see when it came out, but it was too late by the time I had a chance. It's on Netflix (US).

https://deadline.com/2020/05/killers-of-the-flower-moon-martin-scorsese-leonardo-dicaprio-robert-de-niro-apple-paramount-1202904816/

There were talks of either Apple or Netflix helping out with this movie. In the end Apple got the nod. What this means in short that it will first have a theatrical release and then stream on Apple's streaming service.

This only reminds me that I still hope for that Atari movie or HHH (the serial killer not  :hhh) movie with DiCaprio gets made. Those two are more interesting to me on paper. I think dog mod here said that the Atari idea has been changed into tv show. Cool if true. I just like computer business stories from the old wild wild west of computer business.

I have not. Never even heard of it. Skimming the wikipedia summary though I am intrigued. Is it good? I rarely watch tv shows due to the length. But hey if its really good I dont mind diving into a 40 episode show.

Edit: well well well. It is on Netflix. Tell I should watch it Dickie Dee and I will. the decision is in your hands.

The Witch – A family of pilgrims has to leave the pilgrim plantation they are part of due to an undisclosed religious dispute (not religious enough? Too religious? Who knows). They soon find a place nearby close to the woods where they build their new home and little farming area. Things seem to be going somewhat well before the youngest baby is abducted while in the care of the oldest daughter. From here things turn sour.

Religion doesn’t play just a huge part in the film. It’s all consuming. The family is extremely religious and it’s overbearing observing them living under these constructs. Suppression and repression around every corner. Everything is a sin. Lust is very very bad (the oldest son and daughter struggle with this innate human condition which is key in this movie). Any mistake is supposedly a crime against God. It’s as though the entire family is walking on eggshells in constant fear of hell. Which, look, I know that times were utterly brutally tough during this era, but man does this kind of existence make you just want to escape it one way or another. As things go from bad to worse on top of this you get family paranoia. X accusing Y of being in cahoots with the Devil. Various members of the family using their sense of purity against another. This compounded with the family’s misfortunes (death, bad harvest) just make for one big miserable life post being kicked out of the plantation.

I’m not the greatest expert on Christianity (other than hiding the bible behind TVs in hotels and taking down Christian paintings in rooms where I slept as a child. That stuff terrified me. Everyone looks sad or miserable. Even a 7 year old me was not down with the man upstairs), but yeah the movie brings up various sins. I’m guessing lying, pride, lust are all sins right? Well regardless these 3 are dealt with here. Oh and the “witch” does exist. It’s not just some metaphor. The folklore or mythology is alive here.

Did I enjoy the film? I don’t know. I think I just felt like this family is putting themselves under all this fear. Fear that is justified and fear that they create amongst themselves. It’s just disturbing and sad more than anything. I wish they weren’t living on their own. Leaving the plantation was their biggest mistake.

Oh yeah. Give credit to the composer. This flick is unsettling.

Yeah, a killer debut for sure.
Recently, Bi Gan's Kaili Blues (another impressive feature film debut story) made me think the same thing.
The guy's even relatively young ('89).

We watched Contagion last night which we'd heard of but somehow had never seen before.

It's pretty amazing how close some of the predictions were considering what's been going on under current pandemic. Wasn't huge on Matt Damon's character, but see how it was important to the story. I think the ending hurt the movie overall...was way too convenient to the point it felt like a cop-out after the tone set for the majority of the movie. Spoilers:

spoiler (click to show/hide)
The vaccine gamble at the end and the nut getting arrested was dumb/hollywood enough to where I am curious if studio forced it. It's going to be consistently bad all movie even when unnecessary, but everything falls into place at the end? I was laughing at the guy giving his vaccine to the janitor's kid.

Personally think would have been better if the self-injected vaccine failed yet they were still able to create a vaccine...just too late. I was kind of expecting a mutation/them toying with or subverting what happened in The Andromeda Strain, but they ddin't really go that way. I am glad they didn't write in some side effect of the mass-produced one as that would have made the conspiracy theory subplot totally useless. I would have liked it to end on a successful vaccine with Jude Law/idiots raging against the vaccine and hopeless. It doesn't tie as much of a bow on it where they could easily loop back to DAY 1, but I would have put that after the credits anyway.

Just a small little tidbit. The director seems to get a kick out of using material from the respective times his movies take place. Like in The Witch, the credits claim that most of the dialogue and happenings are based on written texts from around that time. Could have sworn it was the same deal with The Lighthouse. I mean they're fictional stories, but built around unconnected texts that would date back to the time and general setting the films take place. Not sure if some of the dialogue was directly ripped from these historical texts, but I could see that too. When you're already having your characters speak in an old fashioned way, why not toss in some lines directly from these old texts.

This is what I loved about The Witch. The dialogue feels so authentic I can actually get lost in the movie. Same thing with The Lighthouse.

Watched this Zootopia movie after someone in the shit thread mentioned it to me. Awful film. Obviously made by a bootlicking pervert that thought they had something meaningful to  say, but didn't.  Furies are a blight on this world.

The original. I haven’t seen the 70’s musical version, but I’ve heard it’s pretty bad. I am curious, though.

This was my first time watching the Blu-Ray and it looks great. It’s got a few extra minutes of footage over the old DVD release too. If you’re unfamiliar, basically the studio edited the movie shortly after release and the original cut is thought to be lost, but some lost scenes were discovered from various moldy 16mm sources, and also the full audio track was also discovered. All home video version have included the full audio track, with production stills filling in where footage was missing, but the Blu-Ray is the most complete it’s been, with only ~6 minutes still lost. I love seeing the restoration work that goes into some of these old movies.

Rocco – Famous Italian pornographer/actor Rocco Siffredi is about to shoot his last feature and we get to spend some time with him leading up to that.

It’s a pretty alright documentary. You learn what makes this guy tick and some of his history. What his thoughts are on his position in the industry and how his profession affects his life in general. For example, after he is done shooting a scene with some young ladies, he talks to them after the shoot and casually says something like “see this is what fucks me up. I have a son who is almost your age. You should be having sex with him and not me” haha. The movie isn’t just about Rocco. We see his partnership with his brother who is often the camera man on set (and I guess comes up with scenarios too sometimes) and we get to see how some of these ladies prepare and feel before the shoots. Early on there is this one who seems like she’s pretty willing to get all wild, but you can sense she’s pretty nervous and it looks to me at least that during the actual shoot the whole thing was a little too much for her. And you get these nice other tidbits in the documentary. It’s pretty clear when someone knows exactly what the hell they are doing in porn and another when they are sorta kinda thinking they have what it takes. Almost a day and night difference when watching this doc. In this regard the actress Kelly Stafford really stood out in this film. Her whole mentality and philosophy and inner strength was really something. She really adds some power to this doc.

In conclusion, Rocco has a massive dong. And the documentary was pretty alright.

I am watching some movie called, Liquid Sky. It's a movie from the 80s. I'm only 3 minutes into it and the music is driving me nuts. It sounds like it was written by a 12 year old that has had too much orange squash. It's like someone bashing random keys on a synthesizer and going, "that sounds kind of like music!".

edit:

Okay, so I am now 6 minutes into it... and I'm like, "what the fuck am I watching?". Imagine Blood Machines in terms of visuals and soundtrack, but executed in the worst possible way imaginable. Yet... I can't stop watching it. I'm only 6 minutes in and I am thinking, "where do you go from here?".

edit:

Right, so now there is a girl with a microphone shouting, "Me and my rhythm box!" and repeating that over and over, and the second line is, "Are you jealous folks?" and repeating that over and over. I'm loving this. Imagine a really pretentious art project from a talentless hack in the 80s.

Tom Hardy impersonator vehicle Upgrade with some proper fucking science fiction. I really liked it. He was definitely better in this than Prometheus. The stylized camerawork for fight scenes was great, and turns out to have been quite cleverly achieved.

When I saw the previews, I had no idea that it would be a near future story. I assumed it was going to be modern day with “magic“ technology that was clearly dreamed up by some executive producer clown. Instead, it turned out to be a fairly realistically depicted near-ish future, cyberpunk setting. The BBEG reveal was stellar, and I liked the ending.

Between this and upload, it seems like nobody really trusts self-driving cars.

Anyway, great movie.

Anyway, great movie.

Upgrade is so good. They're making a sequel as a TV show which idk. I wish they had funded a sequel movie.

Aside from a couple of interesting surreal architectural shots, it looks painfully mediocre.
Maybe i'll give it a shot at some point, because i like both Bacon and Seyfried, but they really need to try a bit harder with the fucking scares, or just focus on building dread.
Nobody fucking falls for the same 3 shitty jump scares anymore.

Gotta say Warner's has always been super classy, old racist Looney Tunes had a similar message added to the front. Glad to see this continue under AT&T.
