Yeah, maybe I'm speaking out of turn.  "Lets take this classic work of literature and make a slow-mo laden faux-steampunk action movie" is potentially a really A+ idea and oh my god everyone working in hollywood is a degenerate.

I don't think it looks that bad and it seems to be far more faithful to the character than other adaptations - including his fighting skills and lack of cleanliness.

Yup. The previous adaptations never really showed him as the bare knuckle boxer and stick fighter that he was. They also played down the alcohol and drugs.

I can understand a studio sexing up Holmes for viewers. But turning it into Wild Wild West/PotC type fuckery is utterly ridiculous

Crowe, by the way, recently told AP that work was tentatively progressing on another MASTER AND COMMANDER film - he'd again appear as Jack Aubrey. It's said to be an amalgam of several books in the Aubrey series, primarily focusing on THE REVERSE OF THE MEDAL; it's already been scripted.

City of Men
Fucking amazing. Probably the best movie that I had to watch with subtitles.  I actually thought it was better than the City of God.  I might want to check out the TV spin-off now.

Gone Baby Gone
I didn't notice at first but it was really the directing more than anything else that made this movie so good, I guess Ben Affleck actually has talent.  Characters were a bit too "colorful" at times but it's not a big complaint.

Walk Hard: The Dewey Cox Story
If you want to see

I'm actually shocked that they didn't try to screw with his look like everyone else has done with every slasher remake this generation.

Book of Eli had to be a decent spec script if it was picked up and Whitta is an unknown.  And The Hughes Brothers are decent directors.  From Hell isn't awful, dude.  Store the nerd rage.

I wonder if the visual direction is actually being pulled from Fallout 3 or something (or is there some other precedent?). Its as if the Hughes Brothers played the game and had this image in mind when filming. I'm not that knowledgeable on how movie are born and progress but would Gary have that much influence on the actual look of the movie?

Either way, I love the way it looks and can't wait to watch it.

Last night we watched Push, which I'd somehow never heard about. It really felt like a trainwreck. I'm assuming from the way it was shot that it was some music video director's first go at making a feature.

Washed the horribleness away with Coraline in 3-D, which I thought was really well done.

I liked it. Jolie's performance is great and varied; she's not exploding in emotion every few minutes, instead it's more reserved. Great acting all around actually. IMO it's too long though

Beowulf
Go into it with an open mind and you'll love it.  It's basically great Nordic mythology mixed with awesome CGI.  I didn't see it in nerdy 3D but the art style and special effects were absolutely brilliant.  I've heard that the movie isn't very faithful to the original poem but the only complaint I have is that the ending was a bit sudden.  Small complaint tho.

Vantage Point
At first it felt kind of cheesy/24ish but it was actually very good.  It's basically a very, very smartly written and paced thriller.  The "rewinding" is a bit annoying in the first half hour but then the story REALLY comes together.

I REALLY want to see that one but no one else around here wants to go with me and I'm not going the fucking movies by myself so it looks like I'll have to wait for DVD/Blu-Ray. :/  Meanwhile I'm being dragged to go see shit like Harry Potter and The Proposal.  Not fair!

I've been slinking down to my man cave in the basement and watching the director's cut of Zodiac over and over again like it's the fucking Zapruder film.  I must be sick in the head to have seen it as much as I have.  I'm talking at least 40-50 times now.  Seriously.  Part of it's because I'm usually typing on my laptop and I'll turn on the TV for some background noise but I'm too fucking lazy to change the disc in the DVD player and let Zodiac play again and again and again but then the other part of me just wants to watch it over and over til my head explodes.
