Saving Private Ryan - Took me a long time to get around to this one, I really enjoyed it.
Idiocracy - Too zany for my tastes, meh.
I Love You, Man - I always like this type of movies, liked this one as well.

It was far from a hipster movie, douche-turd.  It was about as "hipster" as Eternal Sunshine.

*shrugs* Whatever.  It was a fantastic movie that deserves it's critical acclaim.  You don't see me proclaiming it as a Juno, or that shitty Paper Heart movie do you?

and christ, have you even seen it?  I don't think you have.  You don't see any movie unless it's some crappy summer popcorn flick

And so did a few others in this thread.  People who wanted to hate it.  I wasn't so sure about the movie either when I went to go see it.  The only hate coming towards this movie are from groups of people on internet forums trying label it as something that so disgusts them that they have an excuse to not go see it, simultaneously building up ammunition for folks who genuinely enjoy a movie for its merits, not its inherit culture.  It's kind of bullshit.

But of course, why do I bother.  I'll just get some sly response that makes fun of me for whatever unrelated post I've made, or someone will just post a frustratingly short insult and still think they're soooo right about a movie, a person, whatever.  I don't know why I bother.

Yes, Funny People, Moon, Up, etc. are crappy, summer popcorn flicks (well, Funny People was pretty crappy).  Keep in mind, I've actually passed on all the summer popcorn flicks save for Transformers 2!

... but yeah, I'm certainly not going to pay $10 to $12 to see a film that doesn't benefit from the theater environment whatsoever, when I can buy it on DVD for roughly the same price and watch it at home.  Or stream it from Netflix.

Stupid hipster.

I don't even know what a hipster is anymore.  I've seen the pictures of the people called hipster in this thread and I wouldn't think they were.

but Brandnew saying 500 days of summer wasn't a hipster movie only for Wilco to reply with all those reviews calling it one was pretty funny.  I'll watch the movie eventually if only to understand why it's (500) and not 500.  Is it an area code?

They are moving forward with two more Riddick movies to complete the trilogy started with Chronicles of Riddick and they're just discussing the rating issue now:
Quote
The Riddick discussion is about rating now…

Though Hollywood likes their PG Ratings, the next chapter in the COR series was always envisioned as an R rating, like Pitch Black…

One Studio exec suggested doing both “The Underverse” and “The Furyan”, (working titles) at the same time, allowing us an R rating for the first and a PG rating for the second.

The good news- David Twohy’s script comes in next month.

That's from Vin Diesel.

PG Chronicles of Riddick = Shitty shit shit

I always thought it had(s) an interesting mythos but before shit gets interesting it goes all typical Hollywood rollercoaster action. Hopefully they'll do something interesting with the next installments, I'm not too hopeful though, seeing as how they're fighting for R rated content (but that's probably typical).

I wonder if the visual direction is actually being pulled from Fallout 3 or something (or is there some other precedent?). Its as if the Hughes Brothers played the game and had this image in mind when filming. I'm not that knowledgeable on how movie are born and progress but would Gary have that much influence on the actual look of the movie?

Either way, I love the way it looks and can't wait to watch it.

Whitta wouldn't have much say.  Writers are normally requested to make some changes/alterations up to a point. But they don't get to pop in and suggest changes to the director. They are kept pretty separate from the film making process.

Watched Adventureland & Hellraiser tonight.

Adventureland was pretty good.  I've been enjoying the coming of age movies that have been appearing over the last 3-5 years.  They tend to have good music, likeable characters, and sometimes neat cinematography.

Hellraiser was...ok.  I dig Clive Barker's stories and his macabre vision, but honestly I didn't find the movie very creepy or grotesque.  It was just kinda slow and standard with a few cool scenes here and there.  Plus it was sooo 80s and that's always a bad thing.

saw I Love You, Man

was kind of disappointing considering the actors.  Segel did a good job, but Rudd who is a very funny actor was stuck playing a really unlikable annoying character for the first half of the movie who just wasn't particularly enjoyable to watch.  When he loosen's up in the 2nd half he's ok, but it's still a movie about a character who is unlikable and that really hurt the film.  It also just wasn't that funny.  boo

District 9

It's not destined to be this generation's scifi movie, but, putting that aside, it's a pretty good movie. It's got some satire, some social commentary, and lots and lots of people getting BLOWED UP. Cool stuff. Like some reviews have stated, it starts out as kind of a documentary about aliens living on Earth and then becomes more of an action movie. Both parts have their strong parts, though the second half will be the most remembered. What really amazes me about this movie is how much they were able to do with such a [relatively] small budget. These days you can barely even make a comedy for $30 million, much less a scifi action movie that actually looks believable.
