Just spent about an hour and a half beating hitman missions, only has one more person to beat. And then it freezes. Great shit quality control. Now you wonder why your piss ant compant THQ is almos bankrupt. Fucking moron programmers.

U mad?

U gay?

Luckily it isn't taking that long to get it back now that I know where everyone is at, but its no wonder Grand Theft Auto kicked the shit out of this game in sales. I was getting into it until this shit. Now I know I have to save after every activity or else I'll lose everything. This shit hasn't been an issue since the NES days. How do you a release a game that freezes nowadays?

After the big NXE update, you can install ROM-based titles to your HDD, and play it from there for better loading times and no drive-spin noise.

Also of note on quality control: I've had SR2 freeze up maybe three times in over 40 hours of gameplay. I lost a couple of Chop Shop cars, no big deal. Last night I installed GTA IV: The Lost and the Damned, and the game crashed right at the outset of the second mission, locking my character and vehicle in place while the game continue the mission, so I failed the mission while the game was locking me up. I summoned the Start Menu but the menu didn't load, just a big black screen which then froze utterly, without even being able to call the 360 Guide up. I also had several times in the first 30 minutes of play where texture streaming completely failed to keep up with my character's movements; my character was ON FOOT.

So, yeah. Not feeling the "rockstar quality" argument. If it helps you feel vilified, Volition's QA department was sacked last month. Considering how buggy their co-op stuff was, and how many Achievements are tied to it, I have trouble shedding a tear for those QA guys.

I'll download the shit, and I changed the display thing to V-Sync off. I don't know if that matters, I can't tell a difference between either option.

I just beat the game. Liked the Die Hard-esque ending. I beat all the activities, but I doubt I go through doing all the tedious collecting stuff. I wish they would take that stuff out of every sandbox game, its not fun, everyone has to look at a FAQ's or print off a map to get it - its just useless.

Overall, I would put it about equal with GTA 4. I played both a lot, this game had some annoying glitches though. It froze on me twice, some annoying stuff where I would walk through cars delivers to me at some points. And a couple times one of the people I was running with would spaz out. On the first Brotherhood mission, the guy with me was stuck in a perpetual state of shock or something after a tun gun shock or something, he wouldn't move. Then on one of the Ultor missions, while firing off my glock type gun, the sound froze in that sound, so until I reached a cutscene later on in the mission, the grinding gun sound was perpetually playing and I had to turn the sound effects off to get rid of it.

Overall, I liked it. I wish GTA would institue more of a control scheme like this.

I just "100% completed" the singleplayer game, and the collection was, indeed, f00king tedious. I had thought there was a "you did it all!" Achievement, but there was not. Now I'll be clearing out the Activities and Story Missions in co-op mode. 85+ hours... And only a few of them felt like a grind: I'm looking at you, possibly-missed Stunt Jumps and item collection!

In contrast, I've gone back and fired up GTA IV a couple times, and while it is prettier and more atmospheric than SR2, and the writing for the radio shows is better at creating an immersive world, in all other ways SR2 is the better game. I've been playing a little The Lost and the Damned, and tried a little more vanilla GTA IV multiplayer, and it just... all that extra natural motion middleware and representational car handling -- it doesn't make the game more fun. It makes the game less responsive.

Why is it that, with all the effort Volition put into this excellent game, with ways of bringing the core game modes into the multiplayer experience with the Strong Arm mode, but whenever I join an MP game it's freakin' deathmatch free-for-all. Lame!

I can help you with that. We can pull Tow Truck in co-op, only having to connect the Tow Truck to the car at the drop-off point; I did it with Sho Nuff. He and I figure it's the ONLY way to clear that Diversion.

Barnstorming is crazy cool; flying a Parrot through the aqueduct's tunnel through the mountain was one of the most pulse-pounding gaming moments I've had.

Did ANYONE buy the DLC packs for this game? I have a hankering to play more SR2, but the one DLC pack which has achievements requiring co-op in the DLC. This is pretty brash, considering the game's spotty support history for its broken co-op support, as well as the fact that it's DLC based, so only players with the same DLC packages can play together.

I greatly preferred Crackdown's "title update" technique, so that anyone who played online gets the title update, so the DLC content is built-in, but only players who paid for the DLC can initiate the additional play modes. That was slick -- and it was an example from 2007! C'mon Volition!

PS:

For posterity, I should note that I didn't get the parrot all the way through the aqueduct tunnel, crashing about 90% of the way through. I cheesed out and went with the UFO so I wouldn't have to kill anyone for talking when I was concentrating too hard on the game.

I bought them both.  You don't really get too much with either; each is three missions long with a small bit of storyline following up on the Ultor Corporation.  I liked the second DLC pack a lot more than the first.

Actually, one of them is 800, the other is 560, so we'd be bitching about losing 1360, which I'm not prepared to do. Heck, that's a whole album in Rock Band, isn't it? And I have trouble geting new MS Points to load up my account. No, let's just finish what badges we can in SR2, and crawl off to finish Mercenaries 2. As much as I want to tag along with Tera Patrick, I think I'll take a pass.

Lytus Edgus, thanks for the quick review. I'll think about the 2nd one in a bit, once I've cleared up the Sisyphean pile of games that are waiting. Do you know which one actually awards the extra Achievement points? Ridiculously, I think it's the less expensive one, no?

I traded this game in recently. It seems the DLC is worthless. Like 3 new missions and a bunch of cars/costumes whatever else? I never got the allure of that stuff when you have nothing to actually use it for. Most already beat the game, so whats the use of getting that stuff with hardly anything to use it towards?

As much as I'm enjoying Red Faction, and as much as the difference in weapon-switch controls are going to hose me (RB vs. B Button), I'm still hoping to clear each gang's co-op story mission completion. Any of you distinguished effete gangbangers want some, hit me up when you see me online.

Played this for the first time last night. I thought it was kind of stupid to have to up my rep to get the first mission. had to kill a few gang members and run the race Twice to be able to get my first mission. I got to the place to make the new gang hang out(church?) and killed the gang that was there. How do you destroy the shanties? I somehow did 2 of them but never figured out how I did it. So I quit out and and saved from there.

Maybe it is playing on normal or something but I've never felt worried that I would die in a firefight.
The driving is worse than it is in GTA4 but the shooting is marginally better.

Best $10 game since BF1943.

??? Driving is probably more forgiving than the GTA 3 series. Most things turn on a dime, and some things appear to turn on change for a dime. Shooting is entirely up to you, with minimal auto-aim, as opposed to default GTA4 controls which are snap-to-enemy and the ability to toggle through anything in range, including baddies you can't even see, and may not have even noticed.

BTW: Instead of just doing a race or a drive-by, you also have Activities all over the map you could have done. You know: things to do outside the main storyline, all the good crap that was missing from GTA4.

Holy shit, how do "SERIOUS VIDEOGAME JOURNALISTS" give this game lower review scores than any GTA?  I've only played like a little more than an hour of it so far, but the controls alone make it superior.  Not to mention the fact that I was able to create a fat, hairy limey main character and just got to spray raw sewage all over a couple of neighborhoods.

Anyway, game rocks and I probably should have gotten it earlier, but I'm cheap so oh well.

Man, I haven't stayed up all night playing a game in like FOREVER.  Can't remember how long, but it's gotta be years.

SR2 is like if R* actually listened to everyone's complaints re: GTA and put an extra helping of FUN on top just for shits and giggles.  One minor gripe- the game has frozen up on me a couple of times now, and the last time I hadn't saved in over an hour.  I lost all of the cool shit I bought at the mall, too.  :(

Oh well, time for fucking sleep.

Yes, this, completely. In SR1 they were trying to distinguish it from GTA by making it more urban and perhaps less random seeming; it's never clear in the GTA 3 era why the protagonist 'jacks ambulances and fire trucks and police cars... IT'S JUST FUN. But SR1 stuck with drug dealing and store robberies and such.

Fast forward to GTA 4, and R* pulled out that "random" stuff in favor of focusing the player on the story. It seems like after thatt, SR2 said "oh, well, we can stick those in our game now..." and added each of those gameplay types, each with its own particular flair or improvement. The ambulance has a CPR or AED minigame to revive patients, FUZZ has its own Activity devoted to it, and the firefighter game requires that you actually enter buildings and risk catching fire by one's self. And they remembered to give unlockable stuff for almost everything in the game.

The retail PC version has Steam registration for DRM, so don't buy a used copy or you probably won't even be able to install it. I heard the PC port is awful, anyway.

Arr...!

I'm going to plonk myself in again right now. I've not even got the 7 Badges achievement yet.  :-\

Edit: Got the 7 badges one now. Holy cow the bat is a sick, sick weapon. The Pimp Hand is supposedly overpowered killing with one blow, but the baseball bat does knockdown/ragdoll damage, and unless the victim has team mates around, that is just game over. Usually the 2nd hit does it, but there's not a lot in the game LESS FUN than being batted around 2 or 3 times, right as you're about to get up and RUN AWAY.

Gotta say, I miss Blinged Out Ride mode.

BTW, apparently December 5 is Day of the Ninja, and Volition considers THE ULTIMATE BATTLE to be pirates vs. ninjas, so you can get the "Arr" badge on December 5 as well.

I got the "son" treatment for telling my so-called-teammates that they sucked after they lost a Strong Arm session that we'd have won if only, you know, they'd played the game instead of fucking around way outside the active Mayhem and Insurance Fraud areas. Christ, the online community of SR is always so crappy.

rise from your gwave

giving this thread the bumpzzorz as Im fricking hooked on grinding badges, gonna do all the co-op achievements with Chronovore, and Im buying all the DLC!!!

If any Evilbros want to boost some badges Im down  :-* I'll get most of them while going for Kingpin rank but need ones like party animal, 100 nutshots, set 15 dudes on fire, win 10 matches with more than 20 kills etc. as those are kinda incidental. Im a bit gutted I missed the Arr... badge  :-\

Im getting pretty darn good at Strong Arm  :D winning quite a lot and stuff.

Man Saints 2 is like one of the best games ever. It just keeps on giving.

well this is bumped anyhow, so did anyone try the supposedly busted ass PC version?  Since I'm enjoying Violition's RFG, I'm tempted to try their SR2 again (only played a few hours on PS3; got bored; was still better than GTAIV).  I'd rather play it on PC with better visuals/framerate and an X360 controller than the PS3 version.  What exactly was wrong with the PC version of SR2?

Get it on 360.  Get your 360 repaired or RRoD it then repair it or whatever you need to do already.

Plenty of people have been talking about Saints Row 2 - especially those that found GTA IV restrictive and dull. On consoles it seems be what many people have been crying out for - but on PC it simply does not work.

An appalling frame rate, terrible controls, no support for anything other than 360 controllers, impossible driving, constant bugs and glitches...

There has probably never been a worse PC version of a game in the history of the industry, it's beyond bad, it's a deliberate direct insult to everyone who doesn't own a console.

It runs so badly, and my computer is better than the best recommended specs (I can run GTA IV PC fine, along with all the most recent games), that it's inconceivable that any form of quality testing took place for this game. Based on the experience of people who I know have played it on PC I'd really like to see video evidence of someone at Violation running this game successfully on a PC.

Fundamentally, I simply do not believe this is a working product - there really needs to be a serious consideration of legal action against companies that are selling something that is this defective, not to mention websites selling it.

Doesn't work, looks like garbage, it's a company going out of their way to steal your money in return for nothing. Please, please, please don't make the mistake I did and buy this game.

1.0 out of 5 stars SIMPLY AWFUL, January 10, 2009

This is the worst port I've played in a long time. And I thought Mass Effect was bad. By comparison this game makes the transfer of Mass Effect from Xbox to PC look like a carefully designed masterpiece.

The controls are lousy. You cannot access menus through use of the mouse, which is so counter intuitive that it screams fail. The controls just always feel awkward no matter how much you tweak your key mapping. Miserable to play throughout.

The graphics are crummy, and despite having crossfired graphics cards (HD4870s). I can't get decent frames no matter what. I easily get 40-50 frames a second on very high in Crysis, and Saints Row pulls an awful 20-27 despite having inferior graphics. Other problems include common clipping issues, buildings and terrain that pops up out of nowhere, and the worst skins I've seen on character models since 2004. The models are sloppy, robotic looking, and frankly ugly. Enemies get frozen in space, stuck in doorways, etc... It's so bad it's amateurish. The graphic problems alone make the game almost unplayable.

Don't waste your money and try to play this game on the PC. It will frustrate you, anger you, and make you want to chuck the game in the trash. It cannot be played at high graphics even with a very high quality PC. I don't think they can even patch the thing to playability because of the graphic issues that may not be fixable. Don't buy under any circumstances.
