I'm definitely double crossing them after I detonate megaton.  I only help women and children, for the most part. :)

Same here. Pinnacle of good. Although I'd be lying if I didn't say that I'm not smacking my lips at the prospect of replaying this one as a shitheel. It's getting harder and harder to do the right thing, now that I have portable nuclear capabilities.

I think the game setting also gives you an incentive to be a dick, survival and all that. It's the first game where I've made morally dubious decisions not because I'm roleplaying MR EVIL but because it seems like an advantage to do so.

Also, Megaton blowing up is so pretty

I'm still using the Ripper for close quarters. At the very least, when it doesn't one-hit-kill, it gently and soothingly removes an arm.

You need to be at a certain level to get it.  Basically it tells you the location of some ranch that introduces you to wasteland justice and they give you a badass coat and pay you for villain fingers.

are you using VATS. Makes the game pretty easy. The AI is also kind of dumb. For example I can take on a super mutant with a mini-gun by hiding behind a lamp post when he fires, and popping out during his reload to shoot his head off with a hunting rifle. Within a certain range, if it isnt a melee super mutant, it won't resposition much to deal with cover issues.

Well granted, I still only have a 10mm pistol, and VATS for some reason isn't performing as well as I'd like it to.  I always target the torso and then the head, but I don't know if that's a good strategy.

The Chinese assault rifle the sheriff has looks awesome to use, I don't want to give it away unless I have reason to do so!

Go directly to the diner near the Jury Street Metro Station (head west out of Megaton) and you can get your hands on the Xuanlong assault rifle which is much better than your average Chinese version.  The rifle is on the corpse behind the counter.

Heh, you might have lucked out on the remnants of someone who lost a battle.  I went to the diner, and there is no corpse behind the counter with this assault rifle.

Well then maybe you have to complete the Jiggs sidequest in the Museum of Technology before it'll show up.  I just assumed that it'd be there regardless.  Definitely worth the trouble though.

I just wandered out into the desert after getting my house in megaton. Once I helped big town I had secured a free place to sleep in megaton, and a free place to get healed in bigtown, only one or two fast travels away. I spent my early game exploring around big town, after complete quests there I began working my way south towards GNR like I was supposed to, but got plenty sidetracked along the way.

Try not to focus on the objectives, just go out there and make your way. Pick and what you can, sell it to the right people. For example of you talk to the guy in the water treatment plant in megaton and do his fix pipes quest you can sell scrap to him for caps going forward. With good karma you also get megaton citizens walking up giving you free ammo for just being you, and the crazy whore in big town will give you what she finds in the wastes if you humor her stupid teenage ideas.

Anymore I generally hover between 3-5k caps, give or take.  I never seem to make a ton of money because of repairs and ammo always take their toll but at least it's more comfortable now than it was at the beginning when I was making decisions like either repairing my shitty armor or buying a stimpack.

Got the game yesterday. There's something fantastically uncomfortable about walking through the wasteland unlike other open world games. It gives me the creeps, very scary.

its like 10x more creepy when youre walking through a shitty old office building, half the lights are busted, and you hear the faint old-timey music from a radio somewhere on the floor. Or when you walk into a room and look down at the table and see a lit cig resting on the ashtray. Is someone coming back? I better get out. Wtf.

Of course, yesterday the first building I got into was an abandoned school near Megaton. Empty classrooms, corpses, fought a few raiders but I didn't really want to fully explore it cause I felt too weak and I heard raiders talking and got scared. I also like how when you first get out of the vault you see signs near the door saying "let us in you assholes", "motherfuckers", etc.
I also found a trio of those baddass motherfuckers (the ones in the box art) who were walking through the wasteland with their mini-gun. I think they deserted or something, followed them for a bit as they didn't seem hostile and wanted to see what they'd do to raiders, who got annihilated. Looted the raiders and then went my own way.
I find the world very believable.

Yeah, the game can get pretty creepy.  There is one building south east of the map, almost right at the corner, that one guy basically goes out of his way to tell you that it's haunted and all that shit.  Throughout the building you find audio tapes of a guy who is slowly turning into a ghoul.  One tape that is really awesome is when he talks about how his friend started to have a warm glow, then you see a 'Glowing One' enemy there you need to fight.  There isn't really a purpose to this building outside of a random bobblehead at the end, but it was worth going through.

Finally started up Fallout 3 and am loving it.  I didn't care for Oblivion at all, but I like this game's atmosphere and fighting mechanics much more.  Initially I was going to go with a male character, but I decided to try female after reading about the Black Widow option that can add new dialogue for you.  I got the guy in Megaton who approaches you to blow up the bomb to up and leave and go take care of shit back at his boss's place after using this dialogue.  Wonder what's gonna happen.

Had one game-stopping (not freezing, just I couldn't continue on until I reloaded) glitch right in the beginning when you take the G.O.A.T. test.  The dialogue from the teacher would not happen and this seems to be common in the PS3 version.  But the most annoying part of playing this on PS3 is that the game will FREEZE FOR A FEW SECONDS EVERY TIME SOMEONE ON YOUR FRIENDS LIST SIGNS ON OR OFFLINE.  What the fuck, Bethesda?  Guess I need to turn the notification option off on the PS3 for now.

The Soul Crusher perk is better than anything else she could've provided upon completion of her book.  I was tempted to go back to an earlier save when I got it but decided against it in the end because of the discount.  Love how disappointed she is now too. :)

And speaking of the crazy Megaton lady, I never really did the quest to Minefield 'cause I was able to lie my way out of it.  So last night I finally found myself up there for the first time and ran across some dude named Alabama, or something like that, on top of a house sniping at me.  After several cars blew up, I got the hell out of there leaving him alive on that damn rooftop.  Anyone know if this is some guy from that earlier Survival Book Guide quest or is this some other idiot?

No idea.  I killed him and stole his sniper rifle.  I loved that part.  I was carefully walking through that town AT NIGHT, with my flashlight on, and I was thinking  "thank god there are no enemies here."  Then I just heard a gunshot, and all the cars around me started exploding.  The camera went into a third person view as the explosion tossed me backwards and slammed me into a house.  I think I survived that, too.  I don't think I had to reload a save.

I think I played it wrong.  I didn't cross the Potomac for the first 35 hours, so I never got to GNR until

spoiler (click to show/hide)

I had stumbled across my Dad in Vault 112 or whatever.

[close]

So it seemed the whole narrative was wonky after that.  Lots of interactions that seemed like they should've yielded side quests didn't.

So why did the Overseer kill Jonas?  And why did they let you and your Dad into the Vault in the first place?  Did they let others in?  I never had anyone around to ask that stuff to :(

The first question is because he helped your dad

The second question is because of Jonas

Third question is No

Fixed occasional crashes when exiting the game or using Alt F4 to exit.

Fixed crashes when using Alt-Tab while binks or credits were playing.

The game now restarts properly after title updates finish installing.
