I'm ~450 page into the first book, so I'm ok for the first few episodes.

Is the book better than this?

Ep1 was pretty lolz.  Terrible dialogue, one-dimensional characters and nothing but sex, violence, more sex and lolis.  It was like a skinamax movie.  Didn't help the acting for some of the cast was super cheezy.  I'm hoping this is just a bad adaptation of what I hear is a great book.

Solid pilot. Lots of characters packed into an hour, so I can imagine people who haven't read the novels might feel lost. But then again most shows have ensemble casts, from Mad Men to Lost, and naturally it takes some time for characters to stand out. Ned, Catelyn, Jon, Tyrion and especially Arya stood out, whereas characters like Robb and Theon were just...there. I'm sure that will change.

The visuals were stunning as expected, not much that hasn't been said about them. Going in, I was more concerned with the writing and acting, and from what I saw both were good. Sean Bean is excellent as Ned Stark, and really held the episode together. Mark Addy was also very good as the king; Bean and Addy's scenes together were some of the best in the pilot, from the introduction to the crypt scene.

Seems like some folks have complained about the Targ/Dothraki scenes, but I thought they were good overall. Loved how they transitioned from Robert in the crypt lamenting the remaining Targs to the shot of Dany. The only thing I didn't like about her first scene was Viserys taking her clothes off; seemed kinda forced considering we get to see her nude later anyway. The wedding looked kinda off at times, especially the dumb fight with the guy's guts getting ripped out; I wish that scene was shot a bit darker, like with the sun going down and fires everywhere. Would have definitely cut down on any cheesy/corny factor. Still, Dany was perfect as was Viserys so I can't complain too much.

random stuff:
-really like the music
-the intro credits are VERY good
-the ugliest scene was that green screen shot of Bran climbing, yuck
-Arya had like two lines, yet stole every scene she was in. Perfect casting omg
-the ending was perfect. Reading reactions on twitter was hilarious, and I can't wait to hear more reactions from people who weren't familiar with the novel
-perhaps the only thing I really didn't like: a couple odd edits. Right after the beheading scene, the party is on a bridge with a dead stag blocking the path. Just seemed so abrupt, especially considering there are no commercial breaks. A similar thing happens after Drogo views Dany and rides off; the next scene shows Viserys, Dany, and Illyrio looking across the ocean

I'm fine with it. He's reviled due to his appearance, but also due to being a dwarf, which was seen as a judgment from the gods.

Now, if they cast Christina Hendricks as Brienne, then I'd have a problem. Well, maybe not actually  :drool

Strange, everyone I know that has read the books loved it, and everyone I knew who hasn't read the books hated it.  I would have expected something a little different from the reaction.

It makes sense. The book helps fill in some gaps that the show doesn't cover. I'll be interested to see what my wife thinks of it, seeing how she hasn't read the book.

Did you like it Gundum?

As a fan my vision is probably blurred, but the cast of names doesn't strike me as an exclusive problem. Lost introduced a host of characters, as did Mad Men and a host of other popular shows. As the series progresses people will begin recognizing names faster. Hell it took me like 5 episodes of Community to remember everyone's name; initially I just referenced characters as "the black guy" or "nerdy hot chick" or "Chevy Chase"

I'm pretty happy about most of the casting, and glad they got someone to pull off Tyrion, but yeah, he probably is too handsome a chap for Tyrion.

I've been chalking it up to "ugly reads better on page than on-screen" though. Plus being a dwarve in a medievel-ish society is enough, any deformity just seems like overkill.

Yeah, "he's stigmatized cause he's a dwarf" is more than plausible.  I figure they cast him cause there's enough room in Hollywood for one small person to get steady work as an actor, and he's been kicking Verne Troyer's ass for a decade now.

You'd be lapping that up if it was animated by Japanese people.

It actually felt like most anime these days.

Lots of nudity = lots of panty shots/boob jiggle
Lots of sexualized lolis = lots of sexualized lolis
Incest = incest
stereotypical characters = stereotypical characters
straight forward 13 year old dialogue to show they are a certain stereotypical character = likewise

Fits right in with most of the anime airing this season!  Then again it's aimed at the same 13-20 year old male nerd audience so it's not that surprising.

Anyhow, I'll just say I thought the first 20 mins were great and had a lot of atmosphere, the lord of Winterfall guy was very well acted and there were a few nicely done scenes spread throughout.  It wasn't terrible, but it didn't come off as the start of "THE BEST FANTASY STORY EVER WRITTEN (tm)" that all fans claim it to be.  Regardless, even if it was terrible I'd still watch the entire first season just to see what all the fuss is about.  If by ep10 it turns into a great show, I'll bite the bullet and read the books.
