We have free HBO this weekend but it is the latino one and GOT doesn't premiere there until may, I was hoping to watch the second episode live :fbm

That's funny, because it premiered on HBO Latino in the states alongside the original English version.

just watched the first ep. seemed ok. the intro with the ice morons was really shitty compared to the book. but the rest seemed ok enough. this first episode is pretty much exactly as much of the shitty book I could stomach, so got a feeling this will probably just become much better for me watching from the next episode and onward.

I'm thinking those were wights (the actual undead) vs the actual others or white walkers. I hope they weren't white walkers... I was thinking more specter like instead of shitting feral monsters.

from what i read in the beginning part of the book i would imagine properly displaying that on tv would either take too much money or be too difficult without too much CGI and they probably wanted to keep it simple. i dunno i'm not very far so i dont know how much more we find out of them so i couldnt tell you if the entire tone is blown.
but we've seen very little in the show so getting all flustered so soon is silly

Those were wights or undead wildlings. The Others or "White Walkers" were supposed to be the tall pale creatures thats actually seen and talked about in the first books prologue. In the show they're black and look like orcs in LOTR. I watched the video and there's definitely the ice crackling sound that can be heard in the scene beyond the wall which points to the thing they fast being a "White Walker". As said the little girl was a wight.

Its just a large change and something I'm feeling all nerd rage about. The supernatural aspects of this series should have been treated more delicately instead of outright doing what they did.

yeah maybe. it's not that important. but it did leave a pretty bad first impression. maybe would have been better if I hadn't read the beginning of the first book. everything just feeling way too close in during that whole intro probably wouldn't have bothered me so much then. I remember it as being much bigger scale/distance in the book. but the shitty 'cheap set' atmosphere would have been there regardless

yeah exactly. went all monster movie for a while. whut. edit: definitely also thought they should have been more ghostlike. and dignified maybe, or another word like this :lol majestic. but again I only read the beginning of the first book

There's a difference between The Others and the wights. And considering what happens later in the series (ASOS...), I saw nothing wrong with how they were presented in the prologue.

Do you think they were all Wights at the beginning of the episode? I'd like to also think they're wights since they seem to rise up from the snow (where all the dead wildlings were laid out) but at the same time the one we got a good look at was quick and it was wielding a sword nimbly (where in the book they're lumbering things). There was also the ice cracking sound in the scene that pointed towards them being Others. The creators seem have been very careful in regards to their approach to the series so making The Others look like Wildlings just seems like a strange oversight to me.

It seemed to me like the things that gave chase, and cut Gared's head off were White Walkers. Whereas the little girl was a reanimated body, ie Wight. Maybe they were actually all Wights, I guess it would depend on what the writers wrote. But in the book the characters that attack Royce are White Walkers capable of planning, thought, and personality (they laugh as they kill him). Royce is reanimated as a Wight, who isn't capable of any type of thought apparently.

i've been reading around and i'm seeing that a lot of people where confused and not sure who exactly was involved with the death of Jon Arryn. its funny because it's made seriously pretty blatant in the first episode. they even have a scene early on where it's pretty clearly spelled out that the Lannister fuck twins did it before they even reach Winterfell and get caught boning in the tower. it's far more subtle in the book

I wonder if they'll revisit that 'cause if they don't they're culling what seems to be an important setup further down the series.

Its the opposite effect for me but my second read of the series was almost a year ago. Though having it so fresh on the mind would probably be bad (like reading the book and then listening to the audio tape).

I guess it depends on if you plan on still watching the series (sounds like your not if you do read them) or if you want your own imagination to influence what you see in your minds eye or go by the shows. I think theres a Stephen King quote about this dilemma. The book is good though and as a person who generally doesn't like different Point of Views I still enjoyed the books.

Good episode. Lots of much needed character development, more Tyrion and more Arya...not much to complain about. Somewhat slow though, so I wonder how newer viewers might perceive it as compared to the more eventful pilot

Holy fuck, I've been trying to read Clash of Kings, but the first chapter is so TERRIBLE that I can't get through it.

The prologue? It introduces a bunch of new characters from the POV of an old man. Personally I liked it at the time, although it certainly wasn't up to par with GoT's prologue. Trust me, once you get back to the main POVs, as well as the new one, you'll be entertained

I'll keep up with the show, but that's one episode a week of a story that I can probably knock out in a gruesomely lonely day.

I usually do this sort of thing because I'm impatient.  I did it with Walking Dead too, but that became very different after the first two episodes.  It's weird that a TV show is what gets me started into reading a book.  I think it's the "I can sit around like a slob and passively watch a giant arab rape a small white woman" factor.  Picking up a book takes slightly more effort.

Episode featured another case of weird editing imo. After the scene with the assassin, which was very impressive btw, it switches immediately to Dany's storyline. When we see Catelyn again she's walking through Winterfell. Seems like a quick shot of Robb and the guards bolting into the room would have made it feel much more "finished"

It seems like they were trying to tie in the issue Cats hands and Dannys but the cut back to Cat was definitely weird. I guess we're seeing the time constraints in the editing. Which is weirdly seesaw like 'cause some of the other cuts to Danny have been great.

Also just want to say that the natural light when Robert parlays with Ned was gorgeous. Love the cinematography in this.

Really disappointed they let Bran's dreams out, the wolf dreams play a big part on the story so no doubt Bran will describe them to the Maester or something next episode but I was looking forward to actually see the dreams.

Something else I was looking forward was Emilia Clarke riding Drogo in front of his entire khalasar, with the light of torches and the moon illuminating her naked body, alas all I got was clothed sex in a tent :fbm

Ratings held steady, with no drop off from the 9pm showing
Quote
Sunday’s 9 p.m. airing was seen by 2.2 million viewers, matching last week. The 11 p.m. repeat drew another 732,000, also in line with premiere night. Meanwhile the first episode has since climbed to 6.8 million thanks to OnDemand and all of HBO’s extra airings.
http://winter-is-coming.net/2011/04/very-promising-ratings-for-episode-two/

I'd expect some growth next episode given how many people watched the pilot through OnDemand and extra airings. Future episodes won't have as many airings now that Treme has premiered.

second part ends with the epilogue

Having read through the books already, the reactions from the viewers new to the series are almost as enjoyable as seeing these moments on TV. I think I'd also want them to at least go through ASOS completely. I'd be ok with that. I'd be one of those unfortunate cases where a series on HBO didn't follow through but I'm sure the moments from now to then will be fantastic to witness and be referred to as the same level as The Wire, Sopranos, Carnival etc.

JUST FINISHED THE BOOK!

SPOILERS!
spoiler (click to show/hide)
God DAMNIT i'm gonna be forced to watch Sean Bean die AGAIN. FFS you put this guy in leather and give him a sword and he's gonna fucking die. But man. so much stuff is left unresolved. I was going to watch until this season was over before i moved onto the next book but i dunno if i can now. the only thing i didnt care for as much was the battle scenes. mostly because i had a hard time following what was being described. like the Lannisters were winning then the suddenly are losing. i just have a hard time imagining the world and how the battles are taking place. hopefully the show will be able to put it into better context for me.
my favorite thing was how just after Ned gets turned on by Littlefinger we then do not return to him until we've had chapters on every other character. seeing the perspectives on the same situation was really well done.
the ending. fuckin dragons man. breast feeding dragons. i dunno what can be said to that.

Which battle are you referring to? The only "big" battle we see is the one where Tyrion's POV details the vanguard. I like the fact that the battles are only described from one person's POV, at least in GoT. From Tyrion's perspective the battle seems to go ill at times, but ultimately the Lannisters win by sheer numbers. I'd imagine a battle that huge would feature portions of the army that didn't know their side was about to win.

Epic book, and I'm glad the major stuff wasn't spoiled for you

i'm speaking more to my problem with following book scenarios that require you to visually contextualize character location and placement compared to each other. especially in a "battle" situation. i didn't remember the plan Robb had put forth earlier and when we followed Tyrion and his crew holding the left flank the book and shortly after Robb seizing Jaime i wasn't able to connect the two in time and had a real hard time establishing their locations in relation to each other.
