Seems like there's a major debate over book details every week on WiC. Usually it boils down to nitpicking or an insistence that the show replicate the books 100%, but this week I agree with the fans: I really don't like what the show has done with Renly. The sex stuff doesn't bother me, although I would have preferred a better reveal of their relationship.

Making Renly a pansy is such an odd, stupid move. In the books Renly participates in the jousting Tourney and eventually loses to The Hound; he's also one of Robert's hunting partners. Physically he's the spitting image of his brother during the rebellion: tall, strong, pure badass. So why is he a lanky baby in the series, scared of blood?

I "get" the general idea of Loras influencing Renly, it makes sense and will be interesting to watch later in the series. But I just hate the idea of Renly being some court cretin afraid of his own shadow. And speaking of Loras, why does the actor look like he's never visited a gym in his life? Loras is one of the most accomplished fighters in the series. I must say it's puzzling that the producers didn't set up some type of 300-esque gym program to get some of these guys in shape.

Yeah, I really don't get why they decided to change Renly that much, he was pretty brave in the books and here he is some craven( yeah I'm pissed off about they saying coward instead in the show) that fears the sight of blood.

Some gaffer that apparently knows the guy playing Loras said that he and the guy that plays Renly decided to hit the gym before season 2 starts shooting so hopefully they will look like proper medieval warriors next season.

Wait - Season 2 is confirmed?   :elephant

the hbo go site isn't working, and yes, the quality is terrible but I'm guessing that's also a result of the hammering.

and you can't fast forward haha.  it freezes, and then you quit out, and then you gotta start from the start.

great site promotion....

it is supposed to be a promotion for HBO's online streaming video site HBO Go.  but the site isn't working.

edit: nice, the xfinity video streaming site has it too and in better quality and it actually works.

Best ep yet, by far. Nearly every scene was ace, and it brought to life some of my favorites from the book. I really liked last week's ep, but tonight showed the awesome potential this show has.

Great episode. damn! I haven't read the books, but I continue to be impressed at how easy it is to follow. While there are characters I don't like (although, I admit I'm probably not meant to like them) all of the various story threads are very entertaining. There is never a point where I find myself annoyed at the screen-time offered to any one.

I've heard a lot of how people seem to have this thing were GRRM's portrayal of women is supposed to be somewhat misogynistic, but either that is a-ways off in the series or I've completely missed the boat because I find several of the female characters to be superb (shout outs to daenerys), I mean, even the whore riding on the turnips was quick witted and able bodied! Anyone care to fill me in?

The misogyny argument says all the women in Martin's series are in sub-servant positions, positioned below men and ultimately have little to no control over their lives. While this is certainly true for certain characters, it couldn't be more false for others. Nor are all the women as one dimensional as some claim; consider Dany's evolution from the pilot to tonight, for instance. It's hard to give more examples because we'd move into spoiler territory, but suffice to say there are some strong female characters.

Given Martin has based his story on medieval Europe, it's not particularly shocking that a lady would have significantly less opportunities than males. Women were indeed used to link families and forge alliances; hell, marriage in of itself was once used as a means to transfer property and rights.

A good example is Catelyn. She's been running around during the last few episodes, but eventually she will get back to the role of a concerned mother trying to protect her family. She's one of the most hated characters in the book, as are Sansa and Cersei. Sansa for her ridiculous princess worldview and Cersei for...well, being Cersei. The most unpopular characters being female does not suggest misogyny or that Martin can't write female characters. Arya is one of the most popular characters, and many people "love to hate" Cersei more than purely hate her.

always wary of writing in characters to match a social fantasy

In the show at least, female characters generally challenge male authority or go out on their own: stark's wife, daughter, and the whore, or they have a power all their own like Mommy Dearest.

(Yes I am not bothering to remember names)

So the 7th episode is out, but only on HBO Go? Lame.

Yup. In the novel, Bran is confronted with far more wildlings and Robb faces them with his wolf and Bran's. The direwolves rip most of the wildlings to shreds, causing Osha (the female) to surrender before the last one is killed by Theon's arrow.

There's gotta be a direwolf scene in ep7 with Jon

Her and Sansa are basically the two most hated, with Brienne somewhere in there too. Personally I didn't hate Catelyn, although her POVs become somewhat grating as she becomes more and more of a delusional mommy dearest. Sansa deserves the hate imo, although her character gets better.

I actually started to like Catelyn midway but there's still something very slow and plodding about her chapters. Lots of introspection and character studies vs. things actually happening (like Brienne's PoV).

Yea, I liked Catelyn overall, but in many ways more so for the characters involved in her chapters (Robb, the Blackfish, Edmure Tully) than for her POV/thoughts.

Brienne gets a bad rep in many ways, but there's definitely a point where her POV seems quite pointless. I liked it initially as it re-introduced some intrigue and suspense into the series, but as it dragged on I lost interest until the epic ending.

We usually watch a bunch of shows through the week separately then watch them again together at the end of the week.  Or sometimes we watch shows at the same time separately and talk about it over online chat while watching.  :)

After last weeks good ep, this was kind of dull.  I thought the show had kicked into gear, but this ep was just another transition ep building up to the next set of events.  Hope ep9/10 are an awesome finish.
