I honestly thought this was one of the worst written and directed eps recently; interestingly, Martin wrote it. It featured a host of my favorite scenes from the novel but they were brought to life in such a bland, boring manner. Can't say I'm a fan of the Greatjon's casting, and the scene with him challenging Robb and being attacked by Ghost came off rather cheesy.

Other scenes dragged on for long periods of time. The Dothraki scene felt like it took forever, perhaps due to all the Dothraki dialogue. Sansa's first scene with the council dragged. All of these scenes features a series of stale lines. I must say I was surprised, given how much shit hit the fan plot wise, that it felt dull for such long periods.

Arya killing the stableboy had none of the shock or emotion it had in the novel. The kid recited some lines then got stabbed. It looked like they just threw the scene together. The last couple episodes seemed to move past such standard directing a bit, but tonight's ep brought it back big time. While there were previous episodes that I didn't think were very good, this was disappointed me the most.

It felt like nothing really happened in this episode, especially after the rush of events previously. The Dothraki scene didn't add much and felt out of place.

Man why did they even bother to cast the hound if they are going to just have him standing there? and yeah they kind of butchered all the awesome scnes I was looking forward from this episode, they really need to up the number of episodes next season, its really hurting the quality of the show and a bunch of backstory is getting ignored.

They also left out Syrio's best line:

"you are fast for a knight"
"And you are slow for a knight" :bow2

Apparently HBO received complaints about the scarcity of Asian characters in its programming.  A memo was sent out asking for more Wangs.  Boy, did Game of Thrones deliver!

Speaking of Asians, quick question for folks who've read the book: how would you feel about an asian being cast as Melisandre for S2? I ask because WiC did a nice casting piece on the character which featured an asian actress
http://winter-is-coming.net/2011/02/casting-season-two-melisandre/

In a perfect world they'd get Monica Bellucci

Damn, i thought ep 8 kicked ass, like there was almost too much excitement. I don't give a shit if they don't linger over every goddamn fanboy wank moment from the books. Keep it moving!

I agree with this so much. The fans want fanservice and that will do nothing for the show proper just, as per the term "fanservice", appease the fans of the books themselves. Let the tv series thrive in its medium.

I liked the ep more on my second viewing, but still left disappointed at certain scenes. I'm not arguing it should be a strict adaption - that doesn't matter to me. I just thought some scenes of that episode were bad, made more disappointing considering they were some of my favorite from the book. The stab scene is atrocious, and I'm not a fan of the Greatjon casting/scenes.

Yeah, exactly. I like the books fine (not exactly genius lit. but good riproaring fun) but when i'm watching a TV show, I want something different. Faster, with compelling visuals. As TV, this show is starting to really kick ass now. So what if they flub a few 60 second scenes here and there. It's not like they are burning all copies of the book! Go read them again if you like.

'Game of Thrones' hits ratings high

Another bloody good performance for HBO’s Game of Thrones on Sunday: The 9 p.m. airing averaged 2.7 million viewers, up 22 percent since the series premiere. If you count the additional 900,000 people who tuned in two hours later, GOT lured 3.6 million viewers for the night. Sweet.

Season to date, GOT has an average gross audience (linear plays, DVR and HBO On Demand) of 8.3 million viewers.
http://insidetv.ew.com/2011/06/07/game-of-thrones-ratings/

Good to see the ratings climbing nearly every week. A 3mil finale seems very possible

question about how these scenes played out in the book, without getting into spoilers after these scenes (as I haven't read them yet)

spoiler (click to show/hide)
are the two battles detailed in the book? or was this a clever way of alluding to battles they didn't have to budget to go to town on?

do they ever get into the past of the series? because I'm a bit confused about how things went down

like, how did Robert (?) become King when Jamie killed the previous one? sounds like the previous bloodline of white haired people, and the mad king (?) were all butchered.  And Robert was a soldier with Ned, and some Starks were killed by the mad King or something?

Ya the mad king killed Neds father and brother.  His sister also died, who was Roberts love.  Can't remember exactly why the rebellion started but it was because the mad king was mad.  Robert became king because his family was the closest in blood to the old rulers.

is that related to the 'old gods' thing?

so how did the white haired people become the leaders? were they even closer? does it have to do with the last dragon thing?

No nothing to do with the old gods thing.  The white haired people became rulers when they conquered the seven kingdoms using dragons 300 years before the present time.
