Who is getting Tatsunoko Vs. Capcom?
« on: December 09, 2008, 05:19:05 PM »
Is it just me here?  This is the one Wii release I wish was on another system (the other was Tenchu 4, but that is coming to PSP in February), then it would probably have online play.  But I am still pumped!  My copy is supposed to arrive tomorrow.

Probably gonna have to play it on an old composite-only Samsung 13" SDTV though.  THANKS FOR MAKING A SYSTEM THAT LOOKS SHITTY ON MY BRAND NEW MONITOR, NINTENDO!   :'(

I played the order to NCSX, so hopefully it's here soon.  They gave me Gundam vs Gundam fast.

God this is the only Wii game I'm jealous of not getting! what control schemes does it support?

To answer your question if I had a Wii I'd buy it in a heartbeat.

the other was Tenchu 4, but that is coming to PSP in February

really? REALLY?

when was this announced?

A couple weeks ago in Famitsu.

I'll pick it up in a few week when I'm in Japan.  I pick up almost all the fighters and play them with my 1 fighting game friend.  Unfortunately most fighting games have been iffy in the last 4-5 years, so I'm wary of a 3 button Wii-audience vs. fighter.  But I do like me some Viewtiful Joe and Lost Planet mech, so I'll give it a shot.

Hey Lyte, one of the things I don't like about the videos are that it looks like every character has the same combo chain.  Like everyone juggles and does this generic air combo ending with a super.  Are the character combos more varied in the real game?  I really don't want a shallow 3-button fighter :(

Also I'm not shelling out extra $$$ for a Wii joystick I'll never use again.  So I'll have to enjoy playing a fighting game on the Wiimote @_@

wait wait wait

Wii only?

Yeah.  If it was on the PS3/X360 or even PS2 maybe it could have had 6 buttons like a normal fighter!  Or even 4 would be a little better (jab/fierce, short/roundhouse).  3 just seems sooooo wrong for a capcom fighter.

Famitsu confirmed it a little while back, but it was said to be coming right alongside the Wii version for a while now.  The PSP port looks pretty good, too.

PLEASE try to avoid making OT-thread-derailing comments like this one.

Wii only?

Yeah.    :-\  On the flipside, it DOES look great (the art style used is SUPERB-- I like the backgrounds more than anything in SF4), and runs at 16:9 and in 480p at least, but you can't help but wonder how much better it would look on superior hardware.  The game also just hit Japanese arcades and runs on a Wii-compatible arcade board.  I guess Capcom figured the added minigames and Tatsunoko characters would be a good fit for the Wii audience.  My theory is that we'll see this game on other platforms (if not next-gen, then PS2) at some point in the future.  This IS Capcom, after all!

I know about as much as this game as you do, Bebpo.  I am guessing the combos you are talking about are the baroque combos?  I have faith in Capcom; even their most fucked up and broken fighters still have enough depth.  This being an arcade game as well also bodes well for longevity.  We'll see.  Frankly I am more excited about this than I am for SF4 (home version).  At least this game has NEW characters.  And the arcade version should have all the characters that the Wii version has.  Another plus, unlike SF4 which in its current state now feels like a beta version, roster-wise.  I don't mean to go off on a rant, but I am really disappointed in both Capcom and SNK for using so many old characters in SF4 and now KOF XII, which has ZERO new characters.  WTF?  Sure it looks better than the previous games, but I can play KOF '98 Ultimate Match NOW, with plenty of new moves, added characters, and tweaks.  So fucked up.

Yeah.  If it was on the PS3/X360 or even PS2 maybe it could have had 6 buttons like a normal fighter!  Or even 4 would be a little better (jab/fierce, short/roundhouse).  3 just seems sooooo wrong for a capcom fighter.

It IS four IIRC; three attack and one assist button.  But this is not something to get up in arms over.  Capcom has made three-button fighters before (remember JoJo's?), and then the last Vs. game had four attack buttons.  Never mind the 3D fighters that make use of two attack buttons just fine.

Intro video (all animated)

Training mode video (kinda crappy; if you liked Roll's BGM in MvC1, skip to 3:15 in!)

Mini games (these are up to 4P, for the Wii crowd)

I would buy it with ferocity were it not a flipping import.
there's been some really vague rumors about a stateside release, but with the liscensing tie ups I just don't see it happening.  I'm hoping for a region free PS3 version in the future, but then again I was hoping for region free PS3 versions of Otomodious, Cave shooters, and other awesome stuff in general that haven't materialized yet.  So all this makes me a sad panda.

and also the arcade version had a four button control scheme (weak, medium, strong, tag), so I'm not worried about TvC being watered down for the Wii.

But the arcade game was made with the Wii in mind.  I still don't count it as a 4 button fighter just because you have a tag button instead of say "hit 2 buttons" to tag.  I don't really understand how a non-separation of punches and kicks can work, but I will judge for myself.

Light, medium, and hard attacks.  Alternatively, a punch, kick, and power attack a la Real Bout.

So all punches are light attacks?  All kicks are medium attacks?  And a SS/RB power attack?
Sounds so...un-capcom.  I can't really wrap my head around it without hands on.

So when you do a fireball, the three buttons act as jab/medium/fierce?  But when you do a hurricane kick they act as short/forward/roundhouse?

When you play as Ryu and you're not doing a special move, which of the 3 punches does it throw out when you do a jumping punch/standing punch oor jumping kick/standing kick?  Did they just pick the most used attack of the 3 and toss the other two?

Again, go play one of the two 2D JoJo's games.  Three attack buttons.  Played great.

Not sure, but I can confirm it's the weak, medium, heavy, and assist button set-up.  I would assume certain punches/kicks have been retained, and others were either dropped or come out with forward+attack, back+attack, or in certain combos.

According to Fedex, this should be at my door in a little over six hours!  :hyper

Wiimote is "lolz," it's simplified controls.  You're gonna want to use a classic controller, joystick, or GC controller for this.

There is a LOT of stuff to unlock. I got Saki (1000 zenny) after beating the game once (800 points) and then doing a few mini games in original mode (200 points for doing three of them), which are all Wiimote-based. The game will ask you to remove any controller attachments first before entering the original game mode.

Also, Eighting developed TvC. I had no idea it wasn't entirely an internally-developed Capcom game. They did a fantastic job; despite the simplistic graphics, the art style and flash make it all look great. No problems using the Wii classic controller either. If I can find a PS2 controller adaptor I might use a stick, but no way am I going to bother buying an arcade stick for the Wii.

The game is very, very easy to pick up and play. Easier to get into than any of the previous Vs. games IMO, and also far less chaotic compared to MvC2. Since there are no assist-only characters, it feels like Marvel Vs. Street Fighter did. It's a lot of fun and I'm looking forward to playing it more. Hope I can get my friends into it...really wish this had online play.

While this is no big deal for a fighting game, it's still nice to see good endings again. You get a slideshow/text ending, followed by a short animated cut scene for whoever landed the final blow against the last boss, then you get to play the Doronjo and friends bicycle mini game during the credits.

Not 2d fighters.  3 attack buttons really limits you in a 2d fighting game.  In 3d you can have less because there are way more joystick motions.

Honestly I don't see why you are defending the Wii-ish button layout for the game.  You know it would be better if it just had the same controls as MvC2.

There is nothing "Wii-ish" about the button layout.  That would be more like two buttons, lolz.  This is not MvC2.  It's a brand new game.  It STILL uses FOUR BUTTONS.  It just has them set up differently.  And Hyper's troll is actually the right answer- SNK fighters make use of 3-4 buttons and do just fine.

I guess I am in defense mode because it sucks when people rip on games they haven't even played.   :-\

Didn't they add a 5th button to one of the guilty gears for tag or turn or something?  That didn't make it a 5 button fighter.

That would make it a five-button fighter.  This is why special pads and sticks made for the game had five buttons.  Also it's not a tag button, it's the dust attack button, used for launchers and such.  And it's an attack button.

I'm still trying to figure out how the ASSIST BUTTON, USED FOR MAKING *ATTACKS* WITH YOUR PARTNER, is not an attack button, sorry.

Don't be hasty dude, I'm defending the fewer buttons position.  I've bought almost every single domestic SNK PS2 and DC release.

my point was that more buttons doesn't necessarily equal more gameplay complexity, like the ludicrously deep Last Blade series has shown us, or most of SNK's catalog in general.  And if you ask me which side of the divide I fall on, yes, I'm an SNK lover before a Capcom lover.  I know that war has long since passed, but dang it all, SNK never stopped being awesome while Capcom gave up on it post MvC2.  I'm pleased as punch to see Capcom back in the genre they do best, but I still maintain there's somebody who does it better then them.

Because somehow other games that have used assist striker attacks have done so without giving it an entire button.  Like the dust attack button in GG.  In previous GG games you still had the attack but it was within the 4 buttons.  Just separating a move to a separate button doesn't make it any deeper.

Anyhow, I'm just messing with you.  I don't really care either way if it plays well.

No, it makes things smoother and easier to do.  And I have no problem with that; like you say I don't care as long as it plays well.  We've already established this and that Capcom themselves have made good three-button fighters before.  The argument here is that having more buttons doesn't make a game any deeper.  The deepest fighter out there is VF and it only has two attack buttons.

You are gonna get perma-banned.   :'(

Yeah...SNK won.   ;)

You know what my 2D favorite fighter out of the HUGE amount of releases has been this year?  KOF '98 Ultimate Match.  I want KOF XII way more than I do the home version of SF4, too, despite the lack of new characters.

I still enjoyed the occasional game like Garou, SS2, KoF 98'/99/2002/2003, but I'm very mehhh about 75% of SNK fighters.  SvC  :yuck

So I prefer my 2d fighters Capcom-ish.

Eighting made a lot of shallow, but fun and pretty, anime fighters last gen.  I guess it makes sense they made this, though hopefully it's deeper than say the Naruto fighters.

Haha, Ryu's ending is great.  He goes to the same world as
spoiler (click to show/hide)
Lost Planet and Dragon Punches the monsters
[close]
.   :lol

Also should mention that the Lost Planet mech and Gold Lightan DO NOT get partners.  They are single-only characters and get a larger lifebar to make up for it.  They are HUGE (same size as the final boss) and play a bit differently than the rest of the characters.

Damn, maybe I should just suck it up and buy a Japanese Wii...this plus some other games coming out are seriously tempting me!  Maybe I can find a used one for sub-20000yen.

People are saying it works with the Freeloader version 3.2.  You should check around, or do the Twilight hack.

Don't feel like messing around with that crap, would rather just keep my Wii legit and not risk any future updates messing shit up.  If I can get a Japanese Wii at a good price, I'll probably grab it.  There are a lot of JPN games that I'm interested in playing.

I'm afraid to ask what else!

You should try NeoGeo Battle Coliseum.  It's more Capcom-ish in some ways.  SvC was awful-broken (I still loved messing with it though) but NGBC is like the game SvC should have been.  The Real Bouts also kick major ass, but now it is KOF XI, '98 Ultimate, NGBC, SS Tenka, and Regulation A for the awesome.

This game looks like it's going to be just as deep as the other Vs. games were.  Check out Shoryuken; people are already finding crazy shit.  Eighting making this means nothing.  Dimps made Street Fighter IV but you'd never know it when you play it.  TvC is 100% Capcom goodness.  If you know the Tatsunoko side then the nostalgia kick will also be awesome, particularly with the music.

I don't know anyone from the Tatsunoko side :\  Not my genre of anime.

And NGBC was  :yuck
Especially on PS2 with 10 second load times!

Don't get me wrong, I've played pretty much all the SNK games over the years as I give almost any fighter a shot.  I just never liked them much.  The spritework looked stiff and the controls/combos felt stiff to me (Garou exception here).  Capcom games just seemed easier to play and more fluid.

There are some pretty cool characters in there.  I really only (barely) know Doronjo and Yattaman #1 from Yattaman, and that's only because a new anime started up when I was in Japan.   I really like the way Casshern plays.

Epic fail.   :'(

The load times DID suck though.  10 seconds is being generous.  The good news?  Play it on your PS3 and watch those load times disappear.  It cuts them down to more than half!

That's okay, not everyone has good taste.   ;)

j/k

I think it's pretty much safe to say that if you like the previous Vs. games, you will like TvC, unless the absence of Marvel characters is a deal breaker for you.

Just unlocked Viewtiful Joe, and he is awesome!   His BGM is right from the first stage of VJ1.  Brought a smile to my face hearing that BGM and getting the movie reel effect when doing his slow/zoom and speed supers.   :)

javascript:void(0);

I don't see why places like CTF wouldn't.  All the SF4 cabs in the U.S. are imported, as are all the Tekken 6 cabs IIRC.

I dont see this ever being localized, but alot of people claim the licensing would screw up such an effort. Do companies still hold liscenses for tatsunoko in the U.S.A? All of these characters are obscure, none of the shows air anywhere, no dvds. Its like maybe back in the seventies and eighties it be a problem, but all of the tatsunoko characters look about as relevant today as hanah barbera heroes like space ghost and birdman.
oh god
What if
Hannah Barbara vs Capcom? :p
Blue falcon and dinomut, space ghost, johnny quest, conan lookalik, and fred flinstone? Mwahahaha

ADV has the rights to Casshern and Gatchaman. Manga has Karas. Media Blasters has the new Tekkaman, but not the one that's in the game.

I think the other properties (Gold Lightan, Yatterman) aren't held by anyone in North America.

I read somewhere that none of the licensing stuff matters for the game side of things, and that it could be done.  Regardless, it doesn't even matter since no one knows what the hell "Tatsunoko" is outside of Japan, nor do they know who most of those characters are.

If that's the case, then why are Super Robot Wars and Another Century's Episode stuck in Japan? Or is this specific to TvC?

Super Robot Wars' licensing issues are so complex that it will never come to America.

That's what I figured long ago.

What I'm confused about is Bandai not taking a chance on one of the SD Gundam G Generation titles. Not even one of the DS versions.

That's a mecha SRPG that is not hampered by multiple licenses. It's Gundam. One company has the rights to it in America: Bandai.

To be fair, anime properties that arent easily marketable shonen reskins of the dragonball franchise (naruto, bleach) dont stand much of a chance. I used to be a big anime nerd but am kind of glad that it died down considerably in america.

I totally understand. I'm just throwing the question out there in case someone may be reading.

Wowwwwwww

Wii is so shit.  I think most sensible people thought a CAPCOM VS fighter with nostalgic ANIME characters could at least do a good deal better than what a doujin fighter does on PS2 (like Arcana Heart for instance [40k lifetime]) or even on par with something like Fate.

Lifetime is going to be <50k for this.  I hope this means Capcom will PORT THE HELL OUT OF THIS GAME and put it on real systems like the PS2.
