Dude, they're all Oscar bait. You know how you can tell? When they begin maneuvering release windows and critic screenings to accomodate such baiting.

You're just lost in the euphoria of manufactured "film is art!" releases, mainly because you're really young and have taken a whiff of film outside mainstream releases - you now realize how narrow most of your view was. I think everyone goes through this phase, but most film critics seem to be eternally stuck in this near condescending sense of enlightenment, which perpetuates this Oscar nonsense. I hope you'll break free from it one day, and take the good and the bad altogether - but maybe you're destined to be the next film critic for The Sacramento Bee or such.

I'm not saying that all we should see is My Bloody Valentine 3D or The Dark Knight, but I'm certainly not going to sit on a soapboax and preach about whatever film major studios are paying millions in advertising and marketing to secure Oscars nominations for (only to stamp such awards recognition on the DVD release to further sales and create a healthy back catalog). I know most folks are unaware of the carpet bombing of "For Your Consideration" advertising, back dealing and such that occurs in the trades, Hollywood and the Academy, but I feel comfortable that you are very much aware of that.

Very rarely in recent history has the Academy actually heaped a ton of praise on a film that deserves it, rather than manufactured drivel with a healthy amount of marketing behind it.

Also, why did they delay The Road? I thought it was for sure coming out in 2008, and most likely an Oscar contender, but its a vague 2009 film now. Is that just to be in contention for 2010's show? That's been bugging the shit out of me, not knowing why they delayed that film.

I heard two reasons for the delay. One, which came straight from journalists and Viggo, is that the film is kind of dragging out in post-production and totally not done. The other reason I heard was that to contend with the possibility of a SAG strike, Weinstein Co. moved most of their 2008 films to next year to counter such a strike.

The real reason was that John Hillcoat heard that I had not finished reading the novel and opted to delay the movie until I'm done. So fuck you, BrandNew - I'm still reading it!

I'm not avoiding Slumdog to stick it to the man - that's stupid. I'm avoiding it, as I do with most of these flicks, because I'd rather watch geniunely entertaining films over something created with the sole purpose of getting the gold. I usually do end up seeing nominated films in some form or another, but I have the benefit of context since much time has passed.

But in general, I'd rather watch a terribly bad film that wears its heart on its sleeve and was crafted by a group that just loved the process than "For Your Consideration" flicks. It's not iconoclastic, it's just personal preference.

Hell I remember seeing ads for it nonstop pre oscar noms, heralding it as the second coming. It's gotten great reviews and I'm curious: why are some overly sentimental films praised while others are reviled? This movie looks like it has some great cinematography but I've always wondered about this

I say this just because last year (No Country, There Will Be Blood, Jesse James, I'm Not There, Gone Baby Gone, Ratatouille) was probably the best year for film this entire decade, disregarding this "bait" theory.

Yes, sure that is true but it does not take anything away from the fact that I feel Slumdog is LEAGUES better than TDK, Iron Man...etc.

If we concede your point, all movies are manufactures, just with different aims then that puts these films at the same level playing field as all other films this year. Fall dramas, summer blockbusters, comedies...etc

And when putting them altogether Slumdog runs circles around Pineapple Express (which I liked a lot, just listened to the commentary the other day) and movies like that. It doesn't matter what the aim of the marketing was. It just is brilliant. And there is no one who shouldn't see it.

Who cares if its marketed for an oscar? It's a brilliant film. Oh and I am not lost in this film as art/oscar bait stuff. I hated Benjamin Button which is as oscar bait as they come.

And Cheebs, not all films are manufactured. There are filmmakers that enjoy making films. Even ones that see a script on the desk from a note from their agent that says, "Oscar gold, baby!" and a large check from a studio wanting to maneuver their way into the annual race.

Furthermore, I'm big on the premise on delivering on what you promise. I can deal with big blockbusters that play to the lowest common denominator, because they don't try and be anymore than what they are. I find these manufactured Oscar films sickening because there's almost a condescending sensibility about them, as if they're high brow art for high brow people - not the commercial vehicles they actually are. I dislike the spectacle of it all.

Meh, I guess I just disagree with you then. I'd argue that Jesse James was the Oscar bait, even though I still loved it. There Will Be Blood is still my favorite movie since...I don't even know, but it's definitely the best I've seen this decade.

But I think we can both agree that it's a crime that both Ratatouille and Wall-E got shafted two years in a row.
