Edgar is REALLY REALLY awesome, but it's so hard for me to gauge how much being only a DH should hurt him. The guy couldn't have even played in the NL for most of his career.

So would you agree with Malek and I, Triumph?

Edgar worked his ass off his entire career and never once resorted to steroids, ala Sosa, Bonds and McGwire. I know he won't make it first ballot, but Mr. Mariner deserves it.

Personally, I'd rather both leagues start using the DH.

Also, the Braves apparently have 7-9 million to spend and need another productive hitter, but couldn't be bothered to inquire about Derosa, who just signed a two year deal with the stinking Giants for 12 million total. He would have been perfect- right handed, steady production and could have played lf, 3b when Chipper inevitably gets hurt and even 1b or 2b. Grrr. Somehow I have sinking feeling Melky Cabrera is going to be our opening day lf or something, which will suck.

Because we had a surplus of starting pitching, and needed some of the money tied up in our SP to get some offense. Not that I'm totally pleased with the coming Troy Glaus era, but if they had signed him AND DeRo, that would have been awesome. We'll probably end up with Xavier Nady or someone lame like that. I could go for some Johnny Damon action in LF but that's not likely.

And while it (obviously) doesn't make sense to trade Vazquez for Melky, keep in mind that last year was a career year for Vazquez. And looking at our rotation, we can go Jurrjens, Hudson, Hanson, Lowe and Kawakami, which ain't bad. I think pitching Lowe lower down in the rotation will be good and hopefully he'll bounce back a bit... Plus there's always the chance we can package Melkdud and a prospect for a decent left fielder. Probably not, but a guy can dream!

When it comes to RPs, unless it's Mariano Rivera, I'll sign the solid guys for a decent salary. Overspending on relief almost always backfires, and half the time when you're talking about a playoff team, their best relief arm is a demoted starter or a promoted minor leaguer.

Overspending for pitching in general is stupid, and the arms race is what will inevitably lead MLB to a salary cap - unless they plan on contracting the league to eight markets.

What's hilarious about Reyes is that "on paper" he was "rehabbing." That couldn't be further from the truth. Once he saw the Mets were done for the season he said fuck it and wasn't willing to properly rehab. Instead he was out each night at a few Wash Heights bars, where my friend's cousin frequents, dancing the night away. Anecdotal evidence, yes. But would you really put it past him?

Well, we agree on our ballots. We already went over that on the last page. But Davidoff obviously has a bit lower standard -- one which is actually more in line with the general standard the HoF has set so far. Within that framework, his ballot makes perfect sense, which is more than can be said about seemingly every other ballot I've seen.

I don't think you pay a 32-year-old to be your bench for $5 million a year, plus more with incentives. The signing just puzzles me. You could get similar production for a fraction of the price, and use that $15 million to sign a player, y'know, actually worth it.

This is Gary Matthews all over again; a player past his prime that has underperformed for most of his career has a great contract season in Arlington and becomes an overpaid free agent.

He was signed as their starting LF, I believe.

And while the Nats overpay, it's not ludicrous. All their signings - Marquis included - were within the going rate, but the Nats will always have to lean towards the higher end. The team has not outbid itself, though.

For instance, Marquis is also getting $15 million (albeit for two years), and is a solid middle-of-the-rotation guy that any ballclub would take. I would gladly give that guy $7.5 million a year, versus $5 million a year for a 32-year-old outfielder with a spotty track record.

(Byrd, by the way, was traded by the Nationals because he tanked here.)

Huh? The guy won 15 games last year, he's 31-years-old, has thrown 190 innings or more five of his last six seasons and has maintained an ERA under 4.50 throughout his career (save for 2006). You're telling me there's someone that wouldn't take him as a fourth starter?

I mean the Rockies, a playoff team, offered him arbitration - which he rejected. Both the Phillies and the Mets were interested in him this offseason, but the Nationals gave him a couple of million more. Plus the fact that in Washington he's an ace, whereas he'd be the third or fourth starter for those respective teams.

So, yeah, uh what?

Career 99 ERA+? That guy, as Triumph pointed, is nothing but back end/6th man spot starter. Certainly not the 3 spot on any competitive team.

And that contract to Byrd is horrible. You're essentially giving a league average outfielder $5 mil? Whose best years have come from Arlington? It's hard to believe you couldn't get that kind of production from a fringe defensive specialist in your farm-- someone whose got enough of a glove to WAR ~ 2.0 like Byrd.

Considering two playoff teams, one of them in the World Series, were bidding for his services - I beg to differ. Marquis is the type of pitcher you want in your rotation for the right price. You can't discount the fact that he's thrown 190 innings or more five of the past six seasons. The guy eats innings and he's durable, and that comes at a premium in the MLB.
