Well from what I've played, it doesn't seem anything too terrible. Nothing can be worse than 3's story. But I just started... with a game like this, the battles are so much fun that all I need in a story is enough to get me from one place to another, a few characters making stupid jokes, and a plot twist or two and I'm good.

I love the whole concept (traveling to different planets-hell look what my favorite game series of all time is!, sci-fi setting), and how you have a dictionary that tells you facts about the different planets, characters and technologies.

I just beat the first boss and I'm fucking loving this game... much better than 3, combat feels so awesome, and it's addicting with the battle bonuses and attempting some of the battle trophies. Yeah, the environments are low-polygon and blocky, but the lack of much load time, palettes used and the texture detail more than make up for that. Then again I don't give a fuck about graphics in games.

Bebpo - after chipping off enough of the first boss's 'shell', you'll see a glowing blue spot on its side. Target it and you can do like 50-100hp of damage. Edge and Reimi were around level 7 when I beat it.

Is there a way to change what you are targetting for instances like that?

Not that I know of, I just ran to the side of him and mashed the attack button...

50 Cent could probably design a better RPG than Tri-Ace.  Now that TA has their shit games for this gen out of the way, maybe they can start working on what will be their only worthwhile game this gen:  VP3.

the battle system is wayyy better than vesperia's

personally i cringe at the thought of what VP3 would end up looking like

This is much better than Vesperia's battle system, it's a lot faster-paced, and enemies (at least as of now) aren't the HP sinks they were in Vesperia.

It's okay. The problem lies more with the characters and dialogue. Well, not so much the characters actually [except for Welch and, to a lesser extent, Lymle] but how the clothes look. Why can't they were normal clothes like what a person would actually wear in real life? So it makes everything a bit ridiculous. Also, the dialogue is often either over-dramatic or totally-saccharine fluff, which also makes everything a bit ridiculous.

The actually story, though, about mankind's quest to find a suitable world to live on after jacking up the Earth, is actually alright when taken to it's most basic level.

I'd like a good explanation of why SO's battle system is considered deep or at least deeper than Tales.  Tales battles are pretty shallow, but I've always thought SOs were just as much.

I'm not that far in SO4, but like the guy said above, battles just consist of me blindsighting -> combo; blindsight -> combo; blindsight -> combo.

Jansen

?  Am I missing something or do you just hold B and then press forward when you get a yellow target lock on you?
That's about as complex as jumping behind a guy in Tales when he's blocking.

I think it's pointless to talk about which of the two is more "complex".  They're both pretty much mashers in battle and the only depth is in setting up your characters pre-battle.

I didn't play the battle simulator.  Is there an added layer of depth that I'm missing?  Because I've successfully blindsided all the enemies/bosses so far by just holding B and pressing in a direction when I get a yellow target on me.

When you blindside an enemy, do you have to press in the direction TOWARDS the enemy when you see the flashing icon? Sometimes I can't get it down accurately.

Also how do I get more skills to invest in? I'm still really early in the game, leaving in 40 min to play some more, FINALLY!

yeah there's blindside counter attacks and rush combos

tbh tho i was just fucking around in that post. i never even got to the point in vesperia where you learn how to use fatal strikes

one thing that pisses me off in SO4 is the starting area, the jungle planet, why make it so huge, empty and confusing like this? fucking waste of space and time.

and when you finally beat the boss fucking edge tells faiz that he wants to scout more, for fuck sakes give ME the option, not EDGE.

That was pretty stupid. Especially since "scouting around" equating to finding the path that takes you back to the cave that brought you there in the first place.

A question for anyone who's gotten past the Cardianon space station: In the power core room [the last room you get to on the base], the map shows another set of rooms with two treasure chests that seem to be inaccessible from the power core room. How am I supposed to get to that area? I want da loot!

not true actually, the way the bosses are designed in the game. if you don't attack the weak spot you'll be hacking at it for like 15 minutes wondering what the hell is happening.

It might be just us, but the Cruiser's character in this testosterone-fuelled racing flick sounds like a euphemism for pissing oneself - "I would have pulled over to use the toilet, but instead I settled for a Cole Trickle in the car.")

That's nothing. There's a real NASCAR driver named Dick Trickle.
Also, there's a character in that film named Rowdy Burns. Now, I think Rowdy is a nickname- an awesome nickname- but still...  :-*

I'm only at the 2nd planet (got that distinguished mentally-challenged girl Lyme) but goddamn, this game feels empty.

distinguished mentally-challenged cutscenes  --> HUGE field for no goddamn reason --> some ugly looking village on the center --> ugly dungeon.

at least with Vesperia you have skits which keeps game "alive" you know, here they only chat during cutscenes or in the ship also lots of art combinations and an overlimit which is actually more fun and useful than rushfucking mode.

edit: actually, with that voice acting i should be grateful for less talking.

The one thing that SO4 does right with cutscenes, and which every JRPG from now on shop copy, is that after every cutscene you skip you are provided with a brief summary of what happened in that cutscene.

Japanese just can't be well translated to other languages. Seriously. I mean look at it, they just have this weird ass, uncomfortable pauses between dialog, there's no flow.

MGS4 suffers from it in multiple cases too, it's already rather weird in japanese, but when you have English voices then it becomes even worse.

It still looks sorta good.  About as good as IU.  Just not very well rounded and definitely not a showpiece like SO3/Radiata/VP2 were on PS2.  I do think Tri-ace programmers probably feel pretty ashamed that they didn't waste the competition with their l33t skills this gen.  Then again Level 5 used to be showoff PS2 graphic guys and WKS is lolz.  Next up...Team ICO.

At least Team Kojima made a pretty good looking game even if it was sub-720p.

I mean....

....they kind of ruin the pacing............

Playing through SO4 has got me to the point where I'm about to give up on JRPGs entirely. There's just no excuse for a lot of things that it seems like every single JRPG does now. The cutscenes that drag on forever, the ridiculously stupid clothes, the complete lack of choice, the mind-numbing characters, the overly-dramatic and utterly saccharine dialog, the shoddy graphics, the janky controls, and on and on. Well, I say JRPGs, but I'm probably more referring to tri-Ace JRPGs. They went downhill hard and fast and I don't see them ever recovering. Lost Odyssey was pretty good, for the few hours that I played it, and seemed to avoid at least some of these problems.

If FXIII doesn't deliver, I may not buy another JRPG again unless it's a port of 16/32-bit game. :-\

The long terrible cutscenes are a Tri-ace staple though, so it's more their problem than the genre.
