i don't know. I can't really put my finger on it, but the whole fear for the breaking apart of societal discourse really strikes me as a bit polly anna-ish. ultimately twitter is a communication tool, there are people who will misuse it or use it in ways with which you don't like, but their use of the product doesn't really negatively impact you.

yes good blog posts allow you to fully explore a concept, but really it's no different than newspapers vs radio, or broadsheets vs tears. twitter and the various tools have allowed a way to quickly disseminate information to several people at once nearly instantaneously.

but the problem is that you seemed to be ascribing the USE of the technology to the negative implications of the technologies themselves.

i think the actual problems with the social networking and twitter aspects is that there is no gatekeeper, no real barrier to keep out the riff raff from your potential discourse.

i could be entirely wrong (ah, some wiggle room) but that is what really struck me about your segment.

I'd be pretty shocked if humanity's collective brains can be 'rewired' by something as trivial as twitter. People have always chatted or browsed through info in books or newspapers or whatever; twitter is just an evolution of it. We're not destroying our ability to absorb or disseminate information in a more complex fashion. Look at stephen fry's productivity, for example: books, films, plays, podcasts...all while twittering at a far greater rate than I ever will. If anything, twittering seems to give his mighty brain a rest from weightier endeavours.

i'm not against twitter for what it is, because as with most technologies not designed to cook jews in boxcars or explode the anuses of witches, it's completely neutral. on the other hand, i would probably appreciate it MUCH more if it were only available to steven fry and not the other 99.9999% of the internet world, who use it to push their sad little lives into a realm of attention far greater than they deserve. color me judgmental -- and extremely hypocritical! -- but the internet typically shits on any sort of personal humility and restraint in interpersonal interaction, and twitter really is like death by populist diarrhea. people SHOULD be forced to be silent from time to time!

To Prole:

You act as if every Twitterer out there is followed by the entire internet. Remember that it's an opt-in service. I'm not as a rule interested in baby pics (although they comprise 90% of my flickr account...) but if someone I'm following posts a baby pic, it's more-than-likely of great interest TO ME. Ditto, if someone I know in Tokyo posts that they had a great Chinese meal, it has immediate relevance to my life because I can then ask them where they went in case I might want to go to. (otoh, if a friend in San Francisco posts about their lunch, it IS uninteresting to me but the signal-to-noise has been surprisingly good so far).

caveat: Still only a week in, my opinions may change hugely going forward.

so I'm a known twitter hater

a few weeks ago I decided to try to use twitter since everyone was using it and I decided it wasn't fair for me to hate it so much without giving it a try

for the month I was trying to use twitter I got extremely antsy and upset all the time and had serious fights with several online friends

once I stopped using my twitter account I became extremely happy and the quality of my life improved tenfold. in all seriousness, it was the mental equivalent of escaping from chronic depression

I enjoyed quitting twitter so much that I reduced my facebook use accordingly, and now I'm much much happier all the time and have much better friendships and relationships with women

cormac is correct that it's an "opt in" service - and I found it best served my lifestyle by opting out completely

in conclusion don't use twitter
