I think Groo had posted one of the tracks off that album a bit back. I listened to it but it didn't take with me, but now I"m listening to it and love the haunted mood it exudes.

I never really listened to anything by La Roux before this. The mix with Gucci's Lemonade song is one of my favs.

caught Tobacco last night which was pretty good, but the stunner was opener Telephoned

Quote from: kotgb
Opening act Telephoned is DJ/Producer Sammy Bananas and vocalist Maggie Horn playing big box house music, bringing to mind Circuit House diva tours of the 90s, where a woman would sing her lungs out over pulsing, tribal house rhythms as a DJ played instrumental versions of the songs to a room full of sweaty, shirtless white collar gays. Telephoned tapped into that experience perfectly, but the bewildered audience didn’t quite know what to do with a room full of big anthemic house at 9:30 PM.

Telephoned got their start by turning T-Pain’s “Can’t Believe It” into a house hit, and that restructuring of genres and collapsing of tracks was on display last night as cover versions of hardcore anthem Awesome 3’s “Don’t Go”, Jay-Z’s “Empire State of Mind” and a kind of goofy dub speed version of The Cure’s “Friday I’m In Love.” Frankly, I was in love from the first minutes of the set. You can download the EXCELLENT mixtape Off The Hook here and if you get the chance, see them live. It’s a lot of fun, and you can play “What’s that sample” if you’re not too busy dancing your ass off.

official leak from the band
http://www.mediafire.com/?5qzyknndljx

It starts off with an intro that
sounds like something ate and then shit out a Dan Deacon song, veers into "mysterious guy" hardcore, then into uh blackened doomy punk (not hardcore), then gives us a 7:37 long crushingly despairing instrumental before chugging out a near garage rock song, then onto some 90s alt rock, some noisy ass hardcore and then finally the title track "Immacuda"  Immaculada a fuzzed out repeating psychefest that's part art, part animal fuck, part palate cleanser scrubbing your memory clean of all that came before almost daring you to repeat the journey.

thought this may be of interest to the Janelle Monae fans on the board

http://www.theroot.com/views/americas-race-music-past-hurting-janelle-monae?page=0,0

Quote
Kitschy, socially conscious singer and songwriter Janelle Monae has all the tools for a successful debut music career--interesting and dynamic production, a melodic singing voice, an interesting look, a new dance--and one of hip-hop's heavy hitters (Big Boi, of Outkast fame) as her mentor and co-collaborator. So why hasn't her new single torn up the airwaves? Is it because the world isn't ready for Monae's tuxedoed swagger and retro-meets-R&B supersonic sound? Or is it the music industry's stubborn adherence to narrowly defined genres, coupled with monopolization of the airwaves?

But she'd be better if the radio played her stuff. It's an up tempo song with its own dance, and a popular rapper doing a guest appearance - how does that not get played in 2010. She's affiliated with Bad Boy so it's not like she's on some small label that can't make any noise. I don't get it.

A buddy of mine works for a radio station in Detroit and said they basically have a list of songs from record labels they're supposed to play ad nauseam. Then people start requesting the songs already in heavy rotation. I was wondering why they didn't play Exhibit C in the late evening when the station sometimes plays more underground shit, or old school stuff. In Jay Electronica's case he's not really signed with anyone unless you count his indie Decon. No pressure behind the scenes, no play.

She released a damn good album though, so word will get out. Plus all her tv performances have been killer

Anyone listen to that new album from The Drums?  I recall someone here saying they liked it, but the tracks I listened to a few months ago were the most annoying shit I'd heard since the first time I listened to the Girls album...

It's alright.  Gay-GAF has a hard-on for it, don't know if that has any affect on it for you.  It's better than the Girls album by far because that album sucks, but it's nowhere near the year's best.

Also, as if Evelyn Evelyn wasn't obnoxious enough, they have a cover of "Love Will Tear Us Apart?"

I agree the first half  of Recovery is better than the second, although the second half does have Almost Famous which is great. But basically half the album is good, the other half is average. Initially I was wondering if the album would be full of the type of staggering, awkward flow displayed on Not Afraid and his Airplanes verse. Thankfully it only shows up a few times on the album, most prominently on Seduction and Not Afraid, both of which suck. The only tracks that really impressed me were Space Bound and Almost Famous, although Taking 2 Myself is nice too even with an ehh chorus. Seems like the album is full of questionable choruses though, and some tell him to stop singing.

Production is alright, not as good as I was expecting. I can't take No Love seriously and the drums are meh, kinda disappointed Just Blaze did this; Wayne actually drops a good verse though.

Overall it's a 3/5 album to me. I guess a welcome return given how shitty his last two albums were (good to hear even him admit it). But it seems like the witty Eminem who could rap circles around anyone is gone.

How is that a baseless statement in 2010 after Eminem has released two shitty albums in a row, and then an average album? At least Kanye has destroyed nearly every verse he's dropped this year.

Saying Em fell off kinda urks me.

O.K., he's not, and probably won't ever get back to the form that made us all love to listen to him, but Recovery shows he can still kill it better than 99% out there, even when he's not 100% the rapper we've come to know.

Almost Famous is my current fav, Cinderella Man and So bad are also up there.

He's a wack punchline rapper (and his punchlines usually revolve around people that have long been out of the spotlight - wow, a Michael J. Fox dis? How positively fucking edgy). His beats suck. He looks like he's had quite a bit of plastic surgery. He fucked Mariah, and I didn't.

Complete garbage. I don't know if people still like him because he's like their white hip-hop hero, but fuck, I'd soooooooo rather listen to Edan.

Em has always been pop horrorcore rap, but it sounds more ridiculous now that I'm grown. Also, patting him on the back because he can outrap Soulja Boy, Young Jeezy, and Gucci Mane is not what I call high praise. At one time Eminem was a better rapper than Jay-Z, Nas, DMX, and every other mainstream rapper - and he was better than underground rappers too. Now, eh. Is he better than Jay-Z in 2010? Yea...but who cares. He's not the same rapper.

Kanye is good, but he's an average rapper. Flow wise and lyrically he's not as good as Em and probably never will be cause he's always a bit sing-songy, although never as often and bad as Drake. Stop trolling. You can't say he was better then the best when they were at their best then turn around and compare Kanye to him.

Janelle's albums is hot, Christina's is not. Haven't listened to Kelis' but I liked Acapella, which is a good sign.

The ArchAndroid is one of the best records of the last 5-10 years imo. There's so much variety. I only dislike two tracks, "Come Alive" and "Mushrooms&Roses"
The rest of the album is amazing.

Christina's Bionic only has two or three decent tracks on it. The rest is trash.
