He's more...calm lol. His action bit is nice, and as well as his bit about messing up going to warp. Other than that it's normal Sulu stuff. Better than Chekov.

It's everything a summer blockbuster film should be. My two biggest complaints are the cinematography (PLEASE BACK UP FUCKING CAMERAMAN I WANT TO SEE THE DAMN BRIDGE) and maybe the lack of a social issue for the film to get behind.

Other than that, it's easily the best Trek film, IMO. Best score, best acting, best plot, best everything.

much to my chagrin I actually liked it :3

it's a much better movie (and much more Star Trek of a movie) than the trailers, ad campaign, and interviews would lead you to believe. the creators LIED because they knew all the Star Trek fans would just go see it anyway

No fucking way.

The characters were pretty one dimensional across the board.  This was a very thin blockbuster propped up by some good humor and slick production values; there's really nothing of value to discuss from it.  I just didn't find it very exciting.

Need more Simon Pegg.

Yeah, this film definitely is a Trek film. Even with Sabotage by the Beastie Boys.

By the way, Willco, seriously, have you seen the other Trek movies? It's not that hard to beat them out. Even I can admit that half the reason I like most of them is because I'm a trekkie.

Not downplaying how good of a film Star Trek is though. Man, the fucking casting was great. And I didn't want to strangle Karl Urban for once in my life.

yeah, I was gonna say to Willco - being a good Trek film is not that hard

it's better than all the TNG films by far including First Contact

the only real contenders for comparison are II, IV and VI. IV is kind of ridonkulously hokey, and while I like VI a lot, the TOS crew is more than a wee bit geriatric at that point in the franchise. so I'd say it's easily the second best Trek film - maybe third once I think about VI some more.

the cast was spot on, and Nimoy was the glue (and heart) that held the new continuity together. my only real complaint is that nearly the entire movie was spent "getting the band back together" and I want the sequel NOW

also, no Klingons? kinda surprising

I'm by no means a Trekkie, but Wrath of Khan, The Undiscovered Country and First Contact are all better films than this one.

Again, this film felt like a two-hour television pilot for a new Trek show.  How will this crew member end up at their position/rank?  When will they say that favorite catchphrases?

J.J. Abrams needs to fire the guy who does his camera work - he shoots movies like television.  Mission: Impossible III had the same problem.  The fact that we have GIANT FUCKING SPACESHIPS and there's not any real grand shots that stand out is a fucking travesty.

It's not bad and there are much worse Star Trek movies, but this is by no means the best.  I thought the casting was pretty good, though.  And I like the humor.  There's no emotional weight to it because the whole doomsday scenario is illogical and Nero is poorly framed as an antagonist (this is a trademark of Orci and Kurtzman).

I'd probably see a sequel if they developed a story.  And I mean, a real story - not a light, breezy origin tale as seen here.  At this point, I'm inclined to think Orci and Kurtzman cannot write compelling antagonists.

fleshing out Bana's character is the point of the Countdown prequel comic miniseries

hey, if Cloverfield fans are allowed to reference the ARG, I can bring up the prequel comic ;)

I thought he was an okay protagonist, even so. Trek villains can be divided into two groups: Khan, and everyone else whose names you can't remember

EDIT:
Star Trek, though, has never been about antagonists. It's about working together as a species (and with other species) to overcome our shortcomings and accomplish great things. It's man vs. himself, and man vs. nature, not man vs. man. "Better antagonist" isn't really where Trek should be going

I'm not reading any comics for any backstory.

The problem with that logic is that you're contesting that this new iteration of Star Trek is like the old - it's not.  It's an action/adventure film first and foremost, and the most compelling action/adventure films have great antagonists.

There is absolutely nothing in the film that makes me think this is a series about any of those things you just said.  I think there was maybe one line describing why the Federation is important.  Other than that it was just hot, funny dudes shooting lasers in space.

Willco didn't you think this was going to bomb? Apparently with the thursday previews this did 33 mil yesterday and should finish out by the end of sunday with 75-80 mil.

And I expect the sequel to be a lot better. I loved the cast and the characters, far more than the overall plot. A movie where they are all in place and on the ship from minute 1 for Trek II is what I really want. Got the origins out of the way.

Yeah, the movie made me want to see the sequel pretty much right now. The cast works fantastically together. I am ok with the idea of doing Khan EVENTUALLY but I really hope they don't do him in the sequel. Do something completely original.

I really was hoping it'd flop, but it's pretty empty popcorn fare, so it's no surprise it was able to pull out decent numbers.

The fact that it was an origin story is not what hampered the film - if anything, the origins saved it.

I'm not really an apologist, though.  I'll actually concede that it's a not-very-good-film that I enjoy on a visceral level.

I'd be more than willing to enjoy this iteration of Star Trek for space battle porn, but none of it is very exciting or shot very well.  It's just like, there.

I hope the next one has a big space battle, I was hoping for one in this. Basically all there was was the Enterprise zooming in at the end and waiting around while Spock destroyed the ship.  I was expecting one based of the trailers/tv spots.

You don't really need to read the Countdown comic. Spock's flashback and Nero talking to Pike give you basically what's in there. The rest of the comic is just fanservice with Captain Data and Ambassador Picard.

I don't think I recommended Spidey 3 to anyone outside of Raimi-philes.

Star Trek might be worth a matinee if you're bored - it's by no means a bad film.  I just didn't find it terribly exciting for what was definitely a summer fluff version of Star Trek.

I did like the new Kirk.  I'm not really a fan of Quinto's Spock, just kind of indifferent.

I thought the Kobiyashi Maru(sp?) bit with Pike was pretty hysterical. I felt there was a likability to this new Kirk since he Abrams and Co. beat the crap out of him constantly. Shatner was arrogant and never paid the repricussions, but Pike gets the shit knocked out of him constantly.

I'm indifferent to Quinto cause his Spock sounds an awful lot like Sylar. He's not bad, but he's no Nimoy and the fact that Nimoy is in the film only magnifies that.

Film needed more Simon Pegg.

One of the things they should've have done was cut out the Rura Penthe sequence since it confuses people as to what Nero was doing for 25 years.

He was in Rura Penthe for those 25 years. The footage was shot, but test audiences didn't like the sequence so they cut it out. Uhura makes reference to picking up a transmission from a Klingon prison planet, which is his escape. The scenes are shown in the second trailer. The "Wait is over" line is from that part.

Here are Klingons in the trailer:

And Nero before he leaves Rua Penthe:

It apparently really slowed down the movie as well so I am ok with it being cut. Abrams said it will be on the dvd so thats fine.

Hey, will this make more then TDK?

TDK made $158 million in three days and is the highest grossing movie ever through ten days.

Star Trek will make about $77 million through Sunday [which counts a few early screening on Thursday].

In other words, it's not going to happen.

Quote
Will it make more then Origins?

Star Trek's weekend total looks like it's going to be considerably less, so it only will if it has some really long legs amd Origins has really short legs.

That's in like a month and a half. Movies don't really last that long lol. Wolverine looks to be dropping near 70% this weekend. I doubt Trek will have bad legs like that. It'll do better in the long run, easily. Transformers obviously will be the biggest thing this summer though.

I knoooooooow.  :-\  Terminator will be pretty big.  If I'd make a guess I'd say Wolverine - 175 mil (looks to have terrible legs based on how it dropped on friday, Trek really killed it), Star Trek 200 mil, Terminator I bet will do pretty damn well. No idea but it will do better than both of those.
After making 70 mil+ opening weekend?  I doubt it. That would mean it has pretty terrible legs.
This has to be the most gay buzzword ever.

the shittiest use of it is nfags talking games having legs, so it is the gayest word yet

He really liked it. I must be out of touch with the summer blockbuster. Still really looking forward to Terminator, though.

See, Mark's review just mirrors what i thought, here is a film critic who has a lot of knowledge of the Star Trek universe, and spends 6 and a half of his 8 min review, just talking about how "awesome" this movie was in the way that it did previous characters in the universe with new actors and they all looked and moved in ways you would expect them.

And the action sequences were average, no mention of the terrible camera work in them, what about the underdeveloped villain, and what about the soundtrack?

It's funny, all i see is fans talking about how awesome it is that a new Star Trek is out, and it's not garbage, and looked more expensive than ever.

I bet Terminator 4 and Transformers 2 will end up blowing this movie away in terms of action, entertainment, and excitement, and yet they will get trashed by critics. Meanwhile, people will be cheering and smiling all the way through.

I'm just sorta baffled by how much of a free pass Star Trek is getting in really important stuff.
The first transformers got meh reviews. Probably the same for the second. Although I enjoyed it and will enjoy the sequel.

I really doubt T4 will be better. It's McG after all. Abrams is a far better director than McG.
