See, Mark's review just mirrors what i thought, here is a film critic who has a lot of knowledge of the Star Trek universe, and spends 6 and a half of his 8 min review, just talking about how "awesome" this movie was in the way that it did previous characters in the universe with new actors and they all looked and moved in ways you would expect them.

And the action sequences were average, no mention of the terrible camera work in them, what about the underdeveloped villain, and what about the soundtrack?

It's funny, all i see is fans talking about how awesome it is that a new Star Trek is out, and it's not garbage, and looked more expensive than ever.

I bet Terminator 4 and Transformers 2 will end up blowing this movie away in terms of action, entertainment, and excitement, and yet they will get trashed by critics. Meanwhile, people will be cheering and smiling all the way through.

I'm just sorta baffled by how much of a free pass Star Trek is getting in really important stuff.

Transformer 1 had worse action sequences than star trek I don't see the sequel being different and terminator is directed than Mcg :lol

Saw Star Trek last night, enjoyed it. It certainly wasn't perfect, the story was a little off at places, Nero was an incredibly lame villain, but the great cast made the movie. Of course, I've never seen the original Star Trek so I don't know how they stack up to that cast, but I thought it was a fine job overall. Checkov was the weakest link. Soundtrack was decent. The lens flare was overdone to the point of annoyance. A solid, mindless summer action flick.

Well you really don't need to be hopeful. It will happen. After a near 80 mil opening weekend there is no way Paramount won't do the sequel.

I think that making this a different universe was very smart, now if they wanted to they can redo old star trek stories in their own way without fanboys crying.

The German food and beer after the movie at Feierabend was better, though.  :D

Me too. And they definitely put old Spock in the new universe for a reason, one I expect to see in the sequels.

It reminded me a lot of Batman Begins.  The first 45 minutes are great.....the rest, I could take it or leave it.  I wish more of the film had been devoted to establishing all the characters.  The guy who played Bones seemed like the only one that was really doing a heavy-handed impression of the previous character/actor, and yet I still liked him very well because he was given some great lines.

The opening sequence was also mega-cool.  For some reason I found it more emotionally moving than anything in the Battlestar Galactica finale.....Kirk having to listen to his newborn baby cry as he pilots the ship on a collision course has heart-wrenching.  It's the sort of really cheap schmaltz that I never ever fall for, but for some reason this time I bit the apple.

Has Star Trek always handled time-travel in this fashion, where remnants of a previous timeline are allowed to remain intact even if they are inherently paradoxes?  If they were doing it in the more common "Back to the Future" way, Spock obviously should have ceased to exist once the timeline was changed (or at least his memory should have changed).

They've ALWAYS done alternate timeline and parallel universe shit.

There was a TOS episode where there was an "evil Enterprise" with a goatee'd Spock.

george rr martin's take

Quote
Saw the new STAR TREK movie last night.

No spoilers here, just a resounding thumbs down. Take a pass.

The actors do a very creditable job of creating young versions of all the familiar characters from Classic Trek, but the writing sucks start to finish, and the science fictional aspects are ludicrous even for STAR TREK. Fans of the old show might like the film... but then again, maybe not, since it's a "reboot" (Hollywoodese for "retcon") and pisses all over the original continuity.

Me, I think they should just let this tired, tired franchise die. STAR WARS too. I don't ever need to see another wookie, or another klingon. (They won't, of course. Not so long as there's one more nickle to be made. I know how Hollywood works).

I love SF, and I love space opera, but can't we have some new characters in a new universe? Even BATTLESTAR GALACTICA was a retread, albeit a much more interesting one than anything Trek or SW has done in decades. We did have FIREFLY, short lived as it was... but there's room for more. Let's have television versions of Honor Harrington and Miles Vorkosigan. Let's have someone film the Praxis series by Walter Jon Williams, the best space opera I've read in years. Let's have anything that isn't Trek or STAR WARS.

If they really must remake old shows, screw it, let them remake Tom Corbett, Space Cadet, or Rocky Jones, Space Ranger. Pinto Vortando rules!!!

Typically with alternate universe stuff, we always return to the "standard" timeline. The future always seems to be fixed, but this time it wasn't.

I thought the movie was pretty good.  I never watched anything Star Trek before and most of my knowledge of the series comes from references in other media (that Futurama episode, etc).  One thing I both liked and hated was how every character origin wasn't so much an origin, but the transition.  You get a very brief look at the starting point, then it's done.  Like, you see Kirk born, then you see him in that car sequence, then he's old and hitting on Uhura (sp?) in the bar.  But wasn't he stopped by a cop for stealing that car? and what about his stepfather and mother? I guess it saves time to gloss over all that.

The cast was mostly good even if it just seemed to really focus on the Kirk-Spock relationship.  McCoy (sp?) was awesome and I wished they had more of him there.  The nuclear wessle guy was a bit annoying.  Simon Pegg was alright.  Sulu was cool for the few moments he was on screen.  If there is another movie I'd like more focus on the crew and not just those two.  Nero was pretty cool too, even if his motive for being a villain was really thin.  And the comedy aspects felt really out of place, especially when Kirk had fat hands minutes before doing that huge action scene.

I did like the time travel going on and how it was explained.  Old Spock was cool when he was dealing with Kirk, but when dealing with young Spock it was pretty lame.  Though it was funny how they basically said "lol, there will be no paradox" in that scene.  Best part of the time travel was how they showed how the 125-year future technology was a lot more advanced than what everyone else was using.  Nero's ship was a mining vessel and it was dominating the top of the line combat ships.  Spock's ship has the ability to create black holes and destroy that drill ray in a few shots.  The one part I didn't like was how old Spock told Simon Pegg that equation.  It would have been better of Pegg thought it up on the spot when he realized it was possible, not just given it.

And Kirk getting the shit kicked out of him throughout the movie was awesome.  70% of the movie is Kirk getting fucked up or having visible damage from when he was fucked up.

So yeah, it was pretty good.

There's an awesome part in Star Trek IV where Scotty gives an equation for a plexiglass-type material that's stronger than titanium to a manufacturer and sort of shrugs off the paradox of "where did the formula come from?" as irrelevant.

I feel like Spock giving younger Scotty his equation was meant to be a reflection of that scene.

Yeah, me too. It flowed exactly like that scene. I leaned over to tehjaybo and went "Star Trek IV" during the movie.

And honestly I thought that Checkov was dead on in the movie. Probably the most accurate portrayal in comparison to the original cast. Accent was dead on, and I loved the joke in reference to it (w's instead of v's)

That's kinda cool and all...I guess.  I have no idea.

This movie is basically a bunch of Star Trek in-jokes.

I kinda felt the same way.  I saw it with people who didn't watch Star Trek either, so it wasn't a problem, but if I did see with with someone who followed it I might have had to lean over and ask some things during the film.  That one something Maru test makes me think it has some importance.  Um, Uhura having no first name for most of the movie.  That Ewok thing.

I got the W instead of V thing only because it was on Futurama.  And I know the live long and prosper thing because I had a trek friend back in high school who would say it.  Actually, the worst part in the entire movie was when Spock says it to that council and then looks into the camera like "you were expecting this"

same

but i can't wait to see Next Day Air

I want to watch that movie because it has Avon in it.

Like I said, I'd back this newest iteration of Star Trek if it had space battle porn, but there was really none to be found and whomever storyboarded this should go back to work on Fringe and/or Lost.

the first Transformers movie had the worst camera work.  The worst!  Way worse than Star Trek.
