Bet if Spock appeared out of Michael Clark Dunkan's black hole, the tards over here would love it.

my favorite part of The Island is when companies spent money advertising to clones living in an isolated underground society

ha ha

really?

did russia have ads?

they all wear PUMA and play on their XBOXEN

and yeah, the premise of The Island was cool but the movie itself was :-X

The Island could've been cool.  I was really hoping for Logan's Run 2: The Bayening but it never materialized.

Bay wouldn't put titties in.  Much less awesome 70s titties.  He could never do a Logan's Run sequel.

within the context of the movie, they're product placement

within the context of the narrative, they're advertisement

Think for ONE second: Why would Microsoft bother plastering Xbox logos over the utopian future society where the clones (believe they) live? It's not like they can go to GameStop and put $10 down on Halo 4. (Or maybe they can...)

You have seen some of MS's advertising attempts, right?  On some scales, this one could be seen as an improvement.

Well i don't know if you like...watched the movie in a theater set in an underground society populated by clones....but all i saw in that videoclip was product placement.

Not exactly what you said about advertising for monkeys. How bout you stop talking Bs?
No some of those were definitely ads.  Especially the x-box/budweiser ones

Budweiser was in the "real world".

And Xbox is the name they give to the games machine. Just like you name something, something.

yes, the only problem I have with The Island is the product placement. had Michael Bay been able to tone that down it would be considered a film on par with Jean-Luc Godard's Alphaville as an exploration of man's isolation through increased technology

wait no I also had a problem with the movie being TERRIBLE

i hate it in movies when someone at a bar orders a beer and it is completely obvious they are trying to avoid product placement

"beer, please."

it makes me think this person will just drink any old swill and they might as well say

"uhm, uhm, what could happen next. oh yeah he lands on an ICE PLANET! and then there's monsters and shit. and he runs away from them! and then... he hides in a conveniently placed TUNNEL! and... uh.... uh... there's SPOCK! YEAH! SPOCK! now we gotta come up with a reason for why he's there. wait, this is a gigantic planet covered in ice... why would he even land so close to where spock is; why would spock even be on the same planet? why would they meet? NEVERMIND, they... uh, FIND SCOTTY! YES! and he... he... invented something that solves the fact that we have NO FUCKING CLUE how to get kirk back into the story, which seems to be unfolding billions of light years away from this planet. DEUS EX MACHINA, BITCHES!"

-Spock was on that planet because it was close to Vulcan or whatever because the bad guy wanted him to watch it explode
-Kirk was put there because the good guy ship was just leaving the exploded Vulcan area
-Scotty was there because he done fucked up and was banished to a place with seemingly no escape

I don't know if that whole warp thing is a normal Star Trek thing, so I can't really say if that was something they made up for the movie or not.  But the rest was explained just fine.  There are so many other plot holes the movie does have to complain about, like how Kirk goes from being radically sick one second to sky diving another.

we're talking about the future spock and the present kirk. there's no reason why these two people were "fated to be together" to establish something for the franchise. this is already an alternate time line. young spock and young kirk were already familiar with each other. and scotty would have ended up on the enterprise even without kirk stranding on the ice planet - because that was part of the original time line anyway.
No scotty wouldn't necessary. It isn't the same Enterprise. The Kelvin being destroyed messed everything up. The Enterprise was built nearly 20 years later than it was "supposed" to be built due to that.

You still look like Anakin Skywalker!

And to be fair, I never said it would have bad legs, but that it would take a direct hit once Terminator came out since its the same demographic.  It's not surprising it didn't slip too much this weekend - what else came out?  Angels & Demons?  Really?

It will do fine next weekend. Another sub 50% drop. It's memorial day weekend, everything gets a boost that weekend.

And you still said it would top out at 150 mil after last weekends boxoffice.  ;)

It's not going to cross 250 million though Cheebs. You can hope but it won't.

And the movie industry is a worldwide affair dude, and Star Trek has shown less than incredible performance overseas. Angels and Demons doubled it in 3 days.

Terminator 4 and Night at the Museum 2 are coming out the week after. Too much competition, doesn't matter the legs start Trek has right now.

With the fantastic drops it is getting? No way. I say it will finish out at 270 mil.

And again, the competition is meaningless since its memorial day weekend next weekend. EVERYTHING has fantastic drops that weekend.

Fantastic drops due to crap competition.

Angels and Demons is not a hot target for Americans, Wolverine suffered from being shit.

Next Weekend Star Trek will be down to 20 million. Then the week after it will be down to 10 million, and then 3 million, and then it will fade away.

It will end under 250 million domestic, and under 80 million overseas for an worldwide total of 320 million give or take. Which will be great for the franchise i guess, but not spectacular for a 150 million movie.

Not a fucking chance. That is well over a 50% drop, which is all but impossible on memorial day weekend. Pretty much everything drops under 50% that weekend. It's one of the biggest movie going weekends of the year.

Which is why it's going to be massive for Terminator 4, which will also do gangbusters overseas unlike Star Trek, and why Museum 2 will also break the bank.

Seriously, who is Start Trek going to get into the theaters? You have 2 big opening movies that target different demographics, one of them being your own.

And are you sure the whole 50% drop isn't for 2nd weekends?

Huh? Movies tend to drop less their third weekend than their second weekend. And most blockbuster movies like Trek drop well over 50% their second weekend. And memorial day weekend almost always boost all films currently out.

k one of my brothers (age 18) gave it a 2.5/5. Honestly I think he liked it and is too embarrassed to admit it because he originally said "well on a good day it's a 3.5/5..." which makes no sense. After some prodding he lowered the score so yea, I don't believe him

another brother (16) said it was a solid 4/5. He really liked it

And my mom...

Mom: You have to see it, I was having flashbacks all through it! All the characters from the original show are there!
Me: So...what do you give it
Mom: Hmmm...4.5!
Me: So it was better than X-Men Origins?
Mom: Well they're about even
