Maybe I was just pissed off at that stupid horse race and any riding I did after that annoyed me even more. Then I fell down the mine shaft trying to find the Funny Man

It's a western. Taking in the landscape on horseback is mandatory; and it is done justice in RDR.

That was my reaction. Sometimes when I've been homesick for the American southwest, I've booted up the game just to tool around on horseback. It's just gorgeous.

There is a mine shaft you can fall down and die? News to me.

I wasn't fond of that race, either. I'm pretty good at racing now, but if you're bad at managing your horse's stamina, buy some Apples and Horse Pills.

Yeah it is. You finish the mission and the purple question mark shows up and I was running around to find it and fell down the shaft :(

Got to Mexico last night, starting to enjoy this more but I wish I could move between Mexico and US easier. Was very happy to get the Liars Dice achievement quickly too.

Man, glad you're progressing, but Mexico was the crappiest part of the game for me. All the shades of grey presented in John's morality seem to get thrown out the window in favor of expediency. Story-wise, it would be like having John going to work for The Walton Gang, stealing cattle from the MacFarlanes while he is still staying at Bonnie's ranch. There's almost no reason for him to be there, and it lessens John as a character.

Ask Sceneman about Liar's Dice. He's apparently spent more than 10 hours playing it online. :teehee

:lol REALLY? I just went to the game in Thieves Landing and faced one guy. As soon as I lost a dice I re-loaded, and once you get him down to 3 or less dice it's impossible to lose.

I've sort of ignored the story, it's getting a bit stupid because John just helps everyone,  but I enjoyed the Irish character. And it's funny how he's this strong family man who wont sleep with hookers or loose women but will kill any living thing in his way.

Well, there goes the "20 story missions with the same horse" Achievement. I had to start a New Game to get that one. Not that I am complaining. This is probably my favorite game of the last 5 years.

I'm slightly annoyed because I had done almost all of the first part of the game on the one horse and some of Mexico. I was never going to 1000 (or whatever the number) so it's not that big a deal. I also decided to keep $1000 instead of completing the stranger mission and I think I screwed myself out of an outfit too.

The Poppycock Strangers quest, you deliver some goods for someone, find out he's a drug mule or something then you can either keep the $1000 for the drugs or give it to the guy at the end. I kept it so that meant I failed the mission.

Yeah, the Stranger missions have good/evil choices, but if you fail them I think they just get re-spawned.

I'm up for more multi this weekend, but want to check and see if I am mere moments away from a Gold High Powered Pistola.

I liked 'em, except when they're part of a story. As someone else pointed out, unless the instructions are for a hand-wound, you have to kill 'em. Even if you've gone for shooting the guns out of their hands in every single other duel.

Done with Mexico, really got sick of the repetitive riding shotgun/firing the gatling gun missions. The stealthy start to the train mission was great fun.

I wasn't fond of that train mission for some reason. I don't even remember the "stealthy start" of it, just the hordes of jerks riding up on the train while it was in progress, only to be rewarded with a MacGuffin in a safe. It didn't connect to anything at all for me.

Ah, well. The Tall Trees stuff and Blackwater was a lot of fun for me. The story gets back on track and provides some real motivation. Enjoy the last part of the ride, Pilonv1!

Yes that part of the mission SUCKED. Trying to hit dipshits on horses with that gatling gun on a moving train. At least if you failed you got your train engine health restored.

The stealthy part at the start is where you use the throwing knives or sneak up and knife the guards. Was a nice change of pace.

I went hunting for bears but couldn't find any. I did find a beaver for the stranger quest in mexico but one shot with my rifle destroyed him :(

:lol Yeah. Use a gun appropriate to the prey. The springfield or bolt-action rifle will leave only a fine red mist. Beavers are commonly available near the river outside Blackwater, and the Pacific Something-or-Other RR Station. They are kind of hard to find, IIRC.

The "nice" thing about Tall Trees is that BEARS WILL FIND YOU. And they creep up on you and GIVE YOU A BIG HUG. A BEAR HUG.

Seriously, there are parts of Tall Trees that you'll find a bear, and two more will roll up on you quietly while you're aiming.

When you need cougars, try Tanner's Reach. It is rife. With the cougars.

Finally finished the main story (well not the extra stranger bit after but the majority of it).

Managed to get the horse cheev to pop as I finished the final non-Marsden ranch mission which was a nice surprise too. Just going to go back and clean up some of the free-roam stuff before I shelve it. I didn't get the earn 10k one so I need to make some money at some point too.

Overall I enjoyed it but was getting sick of it at the end due to the middle of the game dragging so much.

Would "middle of the game" be synonymous with "Mexico"? Mexico on its own, as landscape, was really nice. Landon Ricketts' missions were good fun, and felt perfect for the world. The rebeldes' and generale's missions were not my cup of tea.

You should download the DLC for trading and hunting, which is free. I think it conveys a cash bonus for trading. Also, you should try staying honorable, as it positively affects prices everywhere except Thieves' Landing.

I think there needed to be one less set of missions in Mexico - the rebels ones you mention are it.

Thanks for reminding me - I still need to max out my fame/honor meter. I think I got the free DLC but I've never really looked at it.

for that DLC, you need to unlock the outfits by completing the new in-game challenges, before you can get any bonuses. Once you have the hunting outfit you can sell shit for more, and the trading outfit lets you buy guns etc. at half price.

Yeah, but isn't there a $10K achievement in there? Pretty sure I skinned half of New Austin, so it wasn't a big trouble for me, but the $15K for the Explosive Rifle was a tad steep.

There were some other tuning issues about the gameplay as well. The idea that you can only travel from safehouses, to any other safe town's outskirts isn't as nice as saying "make camp" then "travel to waypoint."

Also, Undead Uprising's entire singleplayer campaign is a series of in-jokes based on the main campaign, so it would be pretty crappy without knowing the original story, or most of it.

New DLC is chaos. I think the new maps might have not made the initial cut because they're just crazy. Or maybe it's because every Legend 5 and his cousin is trying them out right now. Every new map is full.

On the other hand, they're adding dynamite and fire bottles to many levels, so those hard-to-get Challenges are maybe just a little easier than they were. I think there was an Explosive Rifle on one of the FFA maps, which was previously only in Stronghold competitive maps (and Free Roam, but you can't get Golden Guns from that).

Triple XP weekend coming for those who still enjoy the game. Anyone who still wants that "Achieved LEGEND status in multiplayer" Achievement, here is your golden ticket to the promised land. If you are even a little good at these games, the 3x XP weekends bring out the best and worst players, you are likely not to end up on top, but you will find plenty to dominate. Even if you suck-suck-suck, you can still rinse Twin Rocks for insane XP/minute.

I'm still kinda surprised we don't know for sure what Rockstar's next game is.

GTAV was a loooooong time ago, even counting the wads of resources they threw at the HD versions, they should still have at least a few other games cooking. More like low-heat simmering I suppose.
