Gamestop is offering an extra 50% in trade-in on systems right now. I also traded in a bunch of games (for every 5 you get another $20 in credit)... this was stuff that was waayyy old and I'd never play again. Stuff that wouldn't even get me much on Half.com or ebay.

I reflowed my system today, so it's still working, but will more than likely die in a couple months. They didn't seem to care or notice.

They weren't going to accept it until I took out the 150GB HDD and put the 60GB HDD back in it, so I'll probably put the 150GB HDD on ebay or something.

how much did you get for just the ps3, combined with the 50% extra?  i know that if you send in a 60GB for repair now it's a 50/50 shot whether you get a refurb 160 GB replacement, and i think it's $150 either way

I got $165 ($110 plus $55 extra) for it. CAG was reporting that the national price is $90, so you might only get $135... I wasn't going to question their logic seeing how the thing will be a brick soon enough.

A big thing for me as well was that I didn't want a refurbished model, so I was willing to spend a little more for a brandnew system.

And honestly, as cool as PS2 BC was, I can't remember the last time I actually used it. Good thing I still have my NA PS2.

are the giant turtles the hardest enemies in the game?

seems odd that you'd have to fight those to get the best weapons...then have nothing to use those weapons on 'cause you've already killed a 1000 turtles.

ok so i got auto-haste on lightining,auto-faith on hope and auto-bravery on fang, plus i gave an accessory that gives a +100 MAG to hope (which maybe i should upgrade) which means that battle now go a lot smoother, while i was there i 5-star every mark so far which basicaly means the first 9 except mark 7 which i can't find for some reason....

i must admit that getting a pre-empitive strike makes 5-starring mark a lot easier so is there any easy way to get more of that item that makes you invisible on the field or any tips to get a pre-empitive strike?

Currently trying to enjoy Brutal Legend.  It's tough.  Not like, the game is tough - it's tough to enjoy.  I love the humor, I love the art, the setting, the music -- I was really digging it for awhile in spite of being peppered with relatively minor, yet annoying oversights in design (like, why the fuck is there no mini-map on the HUD?) -- but where I am now, just as the goth people appear and the RTS is in full-swing, it's pissing me off more than anything.

I could go on and on about things I'm finding irritating with the RTS: no indication as to the units you're selectings as you issue broad commands; issuing commands to individual groups is like building a Rube Goldberg machine to make toast; units seemingly taking priority on combat over your commands if they're already engaged, making it impossible to retreat or shift position until everyone is dead, one way or the other; random target selector on 'Attack', which is more like 'Attack Move' anyway because...; it's apparently impossible to focus-fire on any individual target, even if you were to get lucky and somehow select the actual target you wanted to attack (although the A.I. doesn't have a problem doing this, of course, as they always managed to rush and gangbang my ranged units or healer).

There are plenty more I won't bother to mention, but I think that about covers the ones that stand out the most since they all effect my ability to coherently strategize without ridiculous exertion.  And they're effectively ruining my experience with the game.

I'm sure someone out there has opposition to at least one or all of those issues.  If anybody's figured this fucking game out, by all means, please tell me what the hell I'm doing wrong.

edit: reading the official thread, it seems I shouldn't be trying to play this game as an RTS and instead just be doing more stuff w/ Eddie and using more Double Team attacks.

The "it's not an RTS" line was disingenuous of Schafer, but the double teaming with your units and use of Eddie with the (modified) Druid Plow/Deuce can be hugely effective.

I think I mentioned this in the main Brütal Legend thread, but it's similar to playing Warcraft II, but only if your UI/selection gauntlet can travel anywhere, remove fog-of-war, and flick the discovered enemy units right off the map. It's a big change in dynamic, but at its heart it is still an RTS during those sequences.

In particular, I found it really helpful to use the Druid Plow to constantly harass the enemy infantry, just whammo-ing them with the bass speakers or flame exhaust, nailing them with the cow catcher, and only very occasionally hopping out of it for one on one battle.

It is also very helpful to use the "set waypoint" solo at any currently important fan geyser, so that whenever you create a new unit, it will march to that spot without waiting at your Main Stage.

I didn’t even know you could summon the Druid Plow during a stage battle.  That thing feels like cheating, as do some of the other solos that annihilate hordes of enemy troops in an instant.  I didn’t realize you could upgrade troops after the 3rd stage upgrade, either.  It makes a HUGE difference.

I think I’m getting the hang of it now.  Maybe it’s possible to play the game like a pure RTS, flying around and micromanaging your dudes and such, having them do all the heavy lifting, but your Hero character is so powerful that not using him as the primary unit is simply a mistake.  Your troops are excellent back-up (and cannon fodder) and you can run them around to your liking, but they’re little more than a big team of squeaky side-kicks.  Effectively, you are the army.  I think that's maybe what Schafer was trying to get at.

okay i've reached some tower and cleared around 20 mark tough some i haven't got 5 star (will try later after i'm done with this story segment) mark number 15 seemed impossible when i did it but for some weird reason i did 17-18-19-20 without problems which is good because they were all teleporter and i'm not going to go back just to activate one of those,i also still have to find mark 16

also i found a monster that had 1.500.000 HP seriously what the fuck was with that? it took 15 minutes to kill it and then the game was like "LOL YOU SHOULD HAVE DONE IT IN 6"  >:(

i understand that but mark number 12 had half the HP and an actual weakness as opposed to have resistance and it still gave me more time (8 minutes) it's not like my character have been getting that much stronger in the meanwhile....

Just spent a few more hours playing Crimzon Clover. This is the best indie game ever created. It is absolutely excellent, from top to bottom - it even outclasses several Cave games (including Daifukkatsu). On a good run I can make it to stage 5, so I think with some more practice I'll be able to clear it. Game's so good that I'm going to order myself a legit copy since it's only like $30. And rumor is, the creator of this game is a famous superplayer named Clover-TAC, which if true would make a lot of sense and be ridiculously awesome.

Splinter Cell Conviction

I'm trying to finish up games I left hanging a while back.  I started playing it stealthy before I remembered the game wasn't fun that way...not to say it's that fun in the poor man's Batman AA style of aggressive stealth (or whatever it is called); at least it is somewhat entertaining, even if isn't for the right reasons.  A lot of the way the game presents itself is hilarious.  The projector thing is showing Sam's emotions on the wall, and it's flashes "DISTRUST" when talking to one character, then it gradually changes, and it's just super tacky.  But it is more than that; Sam is just a violent and angry guy now.  Well, everyone is violent and angry, it's just that I don't want to be playing that guy.  It isn't like you're supposed to be a bad dude like Kane and Lynch are.  Yet when you grab a guy, you don't have an option for "subdue" or a non-lethal option; it's Kill or Throw, and both kill the guy, just the level of violence varies.  Even the take down animations are violent with him knocking a dude out, then shooting him on the ground as he walks away.  They're trying way too hard to make Sam seem like a badass.

And I messed around with the extra missions and they seem much better than the campaign.  More paths to take, enemies aren't running at you, no enemies constantly yelling, no lame story bits.

I'm not against them making another splinter cell in this style since the extra missions show a lot of potential.  The campaign is just kinda schlock.

I started up Red Dead Redemption today, which is okay so far, but instead of playing that I've been playing Touhou Koumajou Densetsu 2. Game's a pretty good Castlevania clone featuring Touhou character, AWESOME art work, and professional voice actresses speaking every line in the game. Very impressive for a doujin game. The bosses in particular are pretty awesome and the final one is quite challenging. Very fun game. But god damn the art work is sooo gooooood.

Finally got Red Faction Guerilla to accept my 360 controller and played around with that until it locked up on me when I just had demolished an important building and was about to save. :maf

That really pissed me off, so I tried Fairy Solitaire. It's... it's not THAT bad. Artwork is OK, presentation too, gameplay is run-of-the-mill solitaire with very few tweaks, .... wait. I hate solitaire. What was I thinking!?

Then proceeded to play some Shatter. This might be heresy, but I liked good ol' Arkanoid better. All them blingblings and tacked-on mechanics are bugging me.

Also tried out some rhythm games, Turba (meh) and Rhythm Zone (eh). One always moves the bocks juuuust when I'm about to click them due to a very vague interpretation of rhythm, resulting in chaos and mayhem, the other absolutely requires some sort of Guitar dongle. Jesus Christ is Guitar Hero boring without plastic guitar.
Finally settled for some Chime. It's OK, I guess, but I require less of a puzzle aspect in my music-themed games, like Rez, Beat Hazard or Bit.Trip Beat. Still, the cover aspect is neat. Wouldn't pay more than I did for it, though.

The word "epic" has lost all meaning I see. A bunch of random flashy shit with no emotional investment is now deemed epic.

You see epic.

I see Power Rangers.

The entire scene is the equivalent of a Star Wars prequel high budget war scene: flashy and neat, but ultimately soulless, vapid, and emotionally (story-wise) empty.

But considering the popularity of that scene, I can already see I'm at odds with the bulk of the Final Fantasy fanbase to begin with.

I played a bit of Soul Bubbles today... I got it for $5, since I saw it at Toys R Us and remembered Jarosh raving about it on NeoGAF a few years ago. I'm really not sure what this game is trying to be... is it an adventure game, is it a puzzle game, is it a game you play to relax, is it a speedrunning game? There's nothing too challenging, just a few frustrating spots where you're trying to maneuver your bubble past wind and such. I like the background graphics but I think an actual soundtrack would add more to the game, instead of looping a few notes on a pan flute every so often.

Finished my replay of Sands of Time, the combat is frequent and trash and I ran into the WORST GLITCH EVER ...an unsolveable puzzle because a piece spawned facing the wrong direction :(  Wasted an hour trying to solve it before youtubing and finding out my game had glitched and then quit -> reload -> play 20 mins to get back to it -> solve it in 5 secs when it doesn't glitch  :maf

But if you don't run into that glitch, and you don't let the combat bother you much, the game holds up very very well.  The platforming is impeccable.  Just non-stop fantastic level design with tons of variety, great pacing, and some actual challenge unlike modern Ubisoft platforming.  Forgotten Sands feels so auto-playing after this (and also feels so repetitive when you compare the amount of variety between FS and SoT).  Story's simple but good and the prince's lines are always amusing.  Graphics actually look fairly nice with the widescreen hack at 1080p/60fps.  Very playable by modern standards.

In a lot of ways I think I enjoyed SoT more than I have most games this generation.  I hardly ever replay games, maybe I will replay one old game once a year or two.  I always feel like my backlog of current gen stuff takes priority over games I've already finished in the past.  But playing SoT it really has something that's missing this gen.  There's no achievement grinding, no xp grinding, no padding to make the game 10-20 hours long, no bullshit unlockables that you have to replay things over and over to unlock, no tacked on multiplayer, no ending that is a cliffhanger and resolves little, no 10 min long cutscenes, no 20 min long intro before you can actually play, no auto-gaming that plays itself.

Instead it's just a nice varied adventure with just right pacing, just right challenge, and a story from beginning to end.  There's something really satisfying about that.  A part of me wants to bail out on the current gen and just go back to replaying classic PS2 games.

Screens I had fraps taking during the last half of the game:

Yeah I think it's still good by modern standards.  The only things setting it apart are unskippable in-game cutscenes, terrible combat, and no native widescreen (need widescreen patch and some ini edits) or X360 controller support (gotta use a USB PS2 controller).  But when you're running around platforming, it feels just as good as 2011 games.

The mechanics just feel incomplete for anyone who's played the latter games.  It's like going back to MGS1 after playing MGS3.  Still a great game but the experience is a little diminished than when it was first released.

SoT is better than 99% of all games this generation.

If it didn't have combat, I'd say yeah ;)

Still better than most games though, for sure.  The combat is the only thing keeping it from being an Ico/SoTC level of perfect classic.  They should remake the game and remove a lot of the enemy spawn waves and make the combat not suck.

Ah.  Well I never played WW or TTT (going to play those next) and 2008/Forgotten Sands aren't much more complex.  FS has more complex (and way better) combat and more platforming gimmicks, but the level design is just not anywhere near as good so the pure simple platforming of SoT feels a lot better.

Never played WW or TT.

Honestly i like the combat in SoT at some points. Running on walls and turning enemies into sand can be fun. The combat is never intrusive except at one point: the part where you have to protect Farah.

God that sucked.

It's intrusive because everytime you walk into a new area and want to start climbing it you have to fight waves and waves of spawning guys.  It's like Call of Duty the action platformer.  If it was just a group of enemies that you fought and then you're good it'd be one thing, but they just keep respawning and it's a total buzzkill.  Plus most of the enemies are the ones you can't jump over so you have to keep doing the wall jumps to knock them down.  Plus the lock-on sucks and the camera can be bad during combat in small areas.  And sometimes you'll get knocked down and 3 guys will start attacking you and you can't get up and move in time and you get screwed over.  Lot of little stuff that combines to make all the combat bad bad bad.

You can skip WW if you don't have the time.  TTT makes most of WW's story irrelevant and is a better game overall.

When you play TTT or maybe even WW, make sure to let only one core run the game, otherwise the action may not sync properly.  Apparently, modern Dual/Quad core processors are too fast for the game.

You know I hardly praise any game but TTT is good stuff.  The platforming is the best ever in an action-adventure game and even better than many straight platformers.  Combat is still not at the level of a DMC but it's much better than the 1st and good for what the game's trying to do.

Combat gets is improved in warrior within, for better or worse; it's one of those "we fixed this! you be the judge by playing tons of it!" things.  The Two Thrones was when they realized that combat isn't the focus of the game and presents a great alternative where you do additional platforming or light stealth to instantly kill enemies.  Or if you enjoy the combat, which again is improved from the previous game (warrior within in this case), you can just jump in and fight the bad guys.  They forgot that when making the next two games.

What Sands of Time did better than the other PoP games, and most games, is just be really damn charming.  It helps that the Prince doesn't feels forced like certain (Nathan Drake) game (Nathan Drake) characters (Nathan Drake) that people seem fond of these days, like Nathan Drake from the Uncharted games.

Finished Vanquish and since I have a Move controller now, I'm finally playing RE5.

just curious, were you a fan of the RE4 Wii controls?

I really liked the Wii controls on RE4, but the RE5 demo with move felt really odd.  It wasn't like a pointer and instead felt like you were moving a giant analog stick every time you pulled the trigger to aim.

I'm gonna try beating RE5 in the next month.  Despite being quite a fan of the series, I've never gotten around to it for some reason.  I bought the 360 version on day 1 then let it collect dust before trading it in for a loss.  I then rebought the Windows version at full price but never used it for anything other than checking out different AA modes on my videocard.  I feel like I owed it to my wallet to finally finish it.

I wish there was a trainer to unlock everything so I can use the best guns in my 1st playthrough.  I just don't have the patience or time anymore to do it the legit way.
