Right now I'm juggling FFXII deliciousness with honing my Cammy in SF4 and getting super hyped for Super's release.

For the 8th time, Lyte, I keep forgetting, what system do you play SF on? If it's 360, we're so playing as soon as I get one. At least if you beat me, you can give me tips. My friend still stonewalls me.
He plays it on both consoles I think.

MGS4. When I get to play the game, it's fantastic. The problem is the half hour long cutscenes breaking up the gameplay segments every fifteen minutes. I expected this, so I'm fine with it, but the game could have been so much better if I actually got to fucking play for an extended period of time.

I do!  Hit me up on either one.  Been focusing mainly on the 360 version as of late, since I am trying to hit G1 before Super comes out.  I'm at around 10,700 GP now.

Finally 200'd Mega Man 9. Been too lazy to get the last few achievements I was missing (world warrior, conservationist, and peacekeeper), but now I'm ready for Mega Man 10. Can't wait to go for Mr. Perfect in that one :hyper

I never thought about this, but which console is typically played in tournaments? I imagine the PS3 controller is infinitely better for SF, but then XBL is probably much more populated and has better competition, so what happens when players have a controller preference? Or do those guys all just use joysticks?

just been rocking Tales of Vesperia, hard. Its so good. Not sure If I have the time to 1000/1000 it though, with all the other stuff I wanna play. Actually the only game on my must play list is Bayonetta so I might go all the way!

Also been considering going back to Lost Odyssey to find that last freaking item for Treasure Trove achievement  :lol It still bugs me to this day!

PS3 is the standard from what I know, simply because there's a greater variety of sticks that can be used (both PS2 and PS3 controllers would work).  Most tourney players tend to use their own sticks; a lot of them go out and modify them further with better parts too.  I'm very much a pad warrior but I don't use the standard controllers on either system.  I couldn't see myself playing SF4 very well with either controller.

I want to get a good stick, but I always end up blowing my money on new games instead.   :lol  I think I'd want to go with a 360 stick and then a good PS2 stick for use with the PS3 and Wii...have an old Nyko SF Anniversary stick laying here that I ought to look into modding with better parts.

Yeah, PS3 is the standard for tournaments. The reasoning in NA at least was that EVO bought a bunch of PS3s back when Tekken 5 DR came out, so they just stuck with that. And as far as I know you can use PS2 sticks on the PS3, so that's another huge plus. And yeah, 99.9999999999% of the people who attend EVO or SBO play with a stick.

I'm surprised you don't use a stick Lyte with the amount of fighting games you play. The MadCatz TE stick usually floats around $80-100 and it's well worth it. Even the standard edition stick is only $50 and you can mod it pretty easily for full Sanwa or Seimitsu parts.

I've always been pretty versatile...don't have a problem using sticks or pads.  So it never really bothered me.  I could work with a Game Cube controller if I had to.   :lol  But I do think I could do better with a stick; some of the more complex combos seem like they would be easier to do, also stuff like Cammy's "standing" cannon strike.

If you want to use a pad, get a fight pad.  Amazon has just about all of them in stock for $40 each.  You also need to be able to easily hit two or three buttons at the same time, and it's a lot easier with a six button face.

I had to use the standard 360 pad for HD Remix and SF4 for a couple months while I waited for my TE stick preorder to come in (my Hori EX2 was broken; terrible stick anyway). HD Remix was a nightmare to get used to, but the inputs in SF4 are extremely lenient so I never had much problem with it. FADCs and throws with the controller took some time to get used to though. I imagine that's less of an issue with the 6 face button pads.

I use the Xbox 360 controller but I use the analog stick. Does that make me awesome? Depending on SSF4's ability to continue my SF obsession or stunt it, I will get a MadCatz TE stick, just because it's so much easier to Ultra and FADC with a stick than it is with a pad, imo.

And yeah, Lyte, we totally need to play when I get a 360, Super if I don't get a 360 until then. You'll probably serve me, but like I said, at least you can tell me how to up my game.

the camera in some of the parts in Bayonetta  ::)
It's like if you make a good action game, the camera can never be good.  WTF.  It's not that hard to work with the camera in level design.  Just don't make closed narrow vertical hallway fights!

Just finished the 2nd major boss.  Great stuff.  Though weapon-wise I'm not really feeling any of the weapons besides the sword at this point.  Claws are a bit too slow for my taste and punches/kicks are too weak.

Modern Warfare 2.

Not really digging the way the game is set up.  It feels like my hand is being held the entire time.  I understand they want to capture the action flick feel and the game does a good job of doing that.  I'm just not liking the format.  Also I played the scene where:

you shoot up the civilians in the airport

Is this the controversial level?  Maybe it's a video game but I didn't get the whole :omg feel of why this level was such a big deal.

The upside is that I like how great the graphics look.  A lot of time was taken into every part of the levels; nothing feels neglected.

I should go back and beat hardcore mode on Splosion man for the 200.

Anyway, I got a 48 hour code and played a bunch more Bad Company 2 demo. Even the consistently shitty nature of my random teams can't break this addiction. Sooooo gooooood.

it isnt too bad but there are a couple of frustrating bits, mainly with those flying laser bots, on Hardcore they will kill you with one shot as opposed to knocking you back. Its basically just a big memory test as you have to master each level to perfection.

Its worth it, Splosion Man is an awesome game and 200/200 is mad playa skillz. Ive got my fingers crossed for some DLC (Twisted Pixel have said maybe) or a sequel. Splosion Man 2: re-sploded :hyper

It's in Chapter 3. There's one when you're in Paradiso, people(drew) tend to miss that one. The piece you got for beating Joy is for Odette(ice skates).

I almost bought ME2 today, because everyone is constantly jizzing about it, but realized I am too lazy to play and complete ME1 first. I'll wait to buy until I beat ME, at which point ME2 will be $20 on steam/360.

I bought Bayonetta instead. :rock

haha, same situation as me.  Well sort of.  I want to rebeat ME1 on PC before I buy/play ME2 on PC so my decisions carry over, but I'm too lazy to replay ME1 so I'll just wait until I feel in the mood to replay ME1 again and by then ME2 will be like $30.

Mass Effect - started the game and made it to the part where I'm made captain of the Normandy. I absolutely LOVE the soundtrack in this game, as well as the backstory. But I don't feel like the dialogue choices are making THAT much of an impact on the game so far, it's got no where near the freedom/depth/interesting subquests of a Bethesda game. And I don't particularly care for the combat, or the sluggishness of the engine (playing on 360). Still seems like it's gonna be an enjoyable romp.

Finished No More Heroes 2.  Lame game.

Real talk; they really aren't good games and NMH2 is the only one I'd call "decent." They're a nice throw back to the distinguished mentally-challenged fellow simple beat 'em ups of generations past but they're pathetically shallow affairs. Bayonetta is a far superior action game and even God of War is infinitely deeper by comparison. Besides the dribbling weaboo crowd that dig anything goofy and Japanese, I really don't understand why the series gets high marks. Probably due to being one of the few decent hardcore Wii games.

yeah, but at least with No More Heroes 1 at least had the "zany" charm or w/e that, while I don't think it excuses the game, I can somewhat understand the appeal.  No More Heroes 2 is just so boring.  I played on mild and every stage against random enemies is essentially mashing x and y, pressing minus, mashing x and y faster for about 20 minutes (I timed the last one).  Not only are those stages long, enemies constantly respawn.  I started to get the feeling that increased difficulty only meant more health for enemies.  The bosses have been completely boring in both their story and battles, and with the exception of the Samurai Biker dude, the game has been piss easy.  All that plus the two motorcycle segments make me want to compare this game to a coma.  There is literally no incentive or reason to play this game.

like, why the fuck is Naomi's Shop still there when you can only buy two weapons the entire game? it's not like you have a shortage of money if you play each 8-bit game once, and they both are in stock early on.  The best part is that the dual swords, the best weapons, are given to you automatically as part of the story.

oh, OH, and the enemies that just shoot you.  What is the point of that? you can block the shots, but it pushes you back and drains your sword gauge.  When you actually get knocked down, it throws you way back and takes a while to get up even if you mash like crazy.  And all the bosses do is throw shit at you.  You spend most of your time just getting up and trying to run towards your enemy.

I dunno, I couldn't stand the first game at all. It felt so broken and lackluster. This new one is pretty streamlined and easy to play in small chunks so I'm having fun with it. However, they're undeniably poor games when compared to the real action games like Bayonetta and God of War. I bought the second one on a whim thanks to demi's thread but never again. :'(

I didn't like the first game either, but I could understand the appeal, and the story and shit was wacky enough to give incentive to play.  In NMH1 when they killed a boss you were supposed to fight, there was a build up to it and you were shocked when it happened.  In NMH2 it's just "lol you have two less battles now. this game was packed full of battles already? aren't we so kooky and self-referential?

I think you just need to replay the original game and finish it this time!

Plus it's not like you do anything other than spam 1 move in this game, either.  The combat system is about as deep as a sink.

btw, Ichirou what did you find so good about the whip in Bayonetta?  I went back and got it and the ice skates and the whip has great range but it seems really really weak.  I'm sticking to sword + claws or sword + skates atm.  Guns/Whip don't let me kill bosses fast enough for my taste.

Not for bosses, but for regular enemies, it's fun as hell since you can grab 'em in mid-air and then jump off them, so it makes a great weapon to use along with the Kilgore bazookas on your legs.

Is ODST worth a "rental" from gamestop?  I figure I could beat it in a weekend.

Stalker CoP is $20 on steam if you've bought either of the first two.  i bought that immediately.  can't wait to get some time with it

I saw that and wished I just bought Stalker when it was $2 on sale.  I bough the last two at retail.

Zangeki no Reginleiv (aka, the new Earth Defense Force game) impressions I did on gaf:
Quote
Ok, got mine and M+ today and played a few hours.

Honestly I think the game kind of sucks :\
If EDF3 was a small disappointment from EDF2, this is a large one

Things I like:
-Slashing dudes is fun. Without motion+ it kind of is spazzy and sucks. With motion+ it's slower but more accurate and fun.
-...
-.....
-.......
-yeah, that's about it

Things I don't like:
-CUTSCENES. They are not bad. But when you watch a cutscene AS LONG AS THE MISSION before the mission it means I'm watching half the time I'm playing. For an action game this in unacceptable. I had the same issue with Bayonetta recently. Sure the cutscenes in all these games are skippable, but then you have no idea what's going on in the story context. Either make the cutscenes short or do them like EDF where it's just through the radio as you play. I couldn't play more than about an hour or so straight because it just got boring playing for 5 mins, menu for 2 mins, watching for 5 mins, playing for 5 mins. EDF is popcorn action, when you're not in the action you're not having fun.

-Going with that, all the pauses between waves so your STORY CHARACTERS can have dialogue chats....ugh. It feels like they were attempting to make the game more like Musou and I don't approve. Same with having to traverse distances of nothing between waves. Like I said above, when you are FIGHTING the game is fun, when you are not it's just boring filler time.

-Weapon obtaining system. The upgrade system is boring. What made EDF great besides the action was the diablo style of random loot drops. It made fighting endless grunts FUN because you never knew when one would drop a weapon that might be zomg. Now there is no incentive besides oooh crystals.

-No jetpack/flying + non-destructable objects = traversing sucks. Sounds silly but when you get stuck behind fences and have to slowly double moon jump over them it's pretty lame. These are gods. Why can't they fly. They fly in the cutscenes! At least in EDF when you were not the flying jetpack girl you could just blow up any obstacle in your way since it was 100% destructable. Why can't I cut down a fence? wtfff

-Controls. This is more a minor complaint because I'm still getting used to it and I can tell it needs some MAJOR adjustments (sprsks, any suggestions). Beginner controls are horrible, but that's ok, they're horrible in EDF. Expert controls are ok but turning is really iffy. Sometimes I'm turning fine, other times I'm not turning at all so I'm stuck backdashing to re-adjust my view. Then you have the dashing, it works ok but about 20% of the time I try to forward dash (because I need to traverse some long distance of nothing) he backflips which is very counterproductive! I've never found the 3dimensional registration of the nun-chuck to be particularly good on the wii, so that doesn't help.

-Bows seem stupid. To pull back a bow far enough to shoot ONE arrow it takes like 20 seconds of standing still pulling back. It's also not fun at all on the wiimote.

-Graphics. EDF2 was pretty impressive for PS2 tech, EDF3 looked great for early X360 tech, this does not look great for current Wii tech :( From the early screens/footage I thought it was going to be nice looking, but the character models are pretty bad which because there is such a focus on cutscenes is really noticable. Framerate is all over the place, but that's normal for EDF and I don't mind.

So yeah, while it's unfair to the game that I am directly comparing everything to EDF since it's a different game trying to do something different in almost all aspects, it just boils down to EDF being FUN and this being...kind of boring. Too much emphasis on story in cutscenes and in missions, controls that while being fun in the you-are-slashing sense are worse than EDF for most normal things and crappy level design/no-loot-system makes this pretty ho-hum. It's like EDF if they took all the fun arcade stuff out and tried to make a serious "real" game.

I'll give it some more time and maybe those playing can recommend setting adjustments to improve the experience, but very disappointed right now. Why didn't the team just make what everyone in the world wanted? A 16p online EDF (along with offline splitscreen) with jetpack girl and new enemies/weapons :(

Silent Hill Wii is alright so far.  But so far it's most interesting as kinda Wii tech demo than an actual game.  It uses what makes the Wii unique well and looks pretty incredible for the hardware (the flashlight in particular is very nice).  I just got to the high school and the thing that makes me want to stop playing are those chase stages, and I only have done two of them so far.  I don't get the point.  They're terrible and when I said that this game uses the Wii controls well, I meant except these sections, which actually highlight everything bad with the controls.  For example: an enemy jumps on you, you waggle to throw him off, the waggle doesn't register, it eventually registers, the camera is spun around like crazy because going from the tard waggle gestures to pointing directly at the screen (which is required for controller the character) is handled like poo.  Everything ends up looking the same, you're disoriented, annoyed, and want to stop playing.

For throwing the people off, if your pointer is not at the screen it won't register.  You aren't supposed to waggle but rather do a tiny little flick of the pointer from the middle of the screen to the direction you want to throw them.  It's really dumb and at first I couldn't get them off when I wanted.  But I didn't have much of a problem after I figured that out.

Also the woods was the worst chase sequence.  It's harder to get lost in the latter ones.

I just finished my drawn-out extended replay of Mass Effect. The last autosave before the Saren battle was 39 hours. I still only made to it to level 56, I have no idea how you're supposed to get to 60. I did everything and hopped out of the Mako for every battle (save for the first couple) for the extra XP. The only assignment I didn't complete was the one where the Salarian wanted you to help cheat on the Flux gambling machines.

I remember liking the game much more the first time I played it. But by doing all the side missions, it really pounds home just how lifeless the game can be, how desolate the game universe is. Go to this moon/planet/asteroid, go through these pre-fabed bases/mines, wash, rinse, repeat. No matter where you go, there's like a max of 4 living people in any one place. Even the Citadel, which is the "center of galactic civilization," is less populated than a neighborhood grocery store.

Halo: ODST on Heroic.  Got through Buck's story...I hate to say this, but Halo feels outdated or something.  Just slow and kinda clunky.  On the plus side, the map was great and it's pretty damn hard.

I just hate how your character starts panting like crazy after getting hit once.  The shield may as well not even be there.

In doing the high school one now and it's fucking horrible.  I really hate this.  I'm liking everything but these chase sequences.  Either have combat or don't have shitty sequences like this.

This is sooooo bad

Yeah, I lied.  The high school one is kinda bad, especially the 2nd part where you have ADVENTURE GAME THINGS TO DO while there are still enemies.  I didn't get lost on any of the other ones, though!  So I think it does get better.  Especially because

Kinda spoiler if you want to keep the tension of when there are chase sequences:
spoiler (click to show/hide)
there are no more chase sequences after like 60% through the game
[close]

I actually just faq'd the high school one tbh to figure out where to go.

I figured it out eventually.  The worst was taking a picture of the car made it seem like it registered, but because a monster grabbed me, the picture save didn't go through; the red light was gone, so I thought I was covered.  I ran back to the door and it didn't count, so I had to run all the way back to the car, make sure I had enough time, and save a picture.

How many more of these are there? I kinda want to stop if there are going to be a couple more.  The game is enjoyable but these sequences are really awful, like, I can't remember the last time I played something this awful.
