I started playing Red Faction Guerilla on PC and it's fun!  Although I can see it getting repetitive reaaaaaally fast.  Game looks pretty nice on PC and runs well.  60fps destruction is nice.  Watching a building crumble with sexy motion blur is very satisfying.  So is beating people with a hammer.  I enjoy the quest arrow stuff while driving for these sandbox games.  That + fast vehicles makes traveling at least pretty quick.

The only things I didn't like were the PC controls are horrible and even with some monkeying it's still not that great.  Thinking about just giving up on the 2ndary fire button and making right mouse be zoom in.  The cover never seems to work.  Also didn't like that you have to get your cop level down before you can do a story mission.  Is the only way to lower your wanted level to drive all the way to a safehouse?

Is it a big deal if you continue and lose morale?  I've just been reloading anytime I die so I don't lose morale, but hitting continue is faster if it's not a big deal.

High morale means more people help you. You can gain morale after you beat the game. the RFG thread here has me rambling about strategies, achievements, etc.

I think for PC there's Counterstrike, Blizzard stuff (although I wonder if anyone still plays Diablo online), & L4D and that's about it.  Everything else will have between 0-5 people playing it in the world.

got some ME2 in. Enjoyed the Archangel/Jack pick-up missions, did a bit of exploring. Not wild about the prospect of managing resources just in order to fly but there you go. It's a bit farcical - you explore a GAS GIANT which should have practically unlimited resources but it gives you just enough to limp to the next store to buy more fuel....oh well. Such is 'gameplay'. Basically I think i could poopsock this game quite happily.

I guess I'm not! This was based off 5 mins messing about on the galaxy map. All I know is that I was running out of fuel and had to buy more - i didn't notice what I paid with. Credits you pick up from guard's lockers etc are enough to fuel a starship, then? OK! More game logic.

If you run out of fuel you have to pay minerals to return to the nearest Fuel Depot.

You should NEVER run out of fuel for any reason.

Refuel at the Fuel Depot, in the same system as the Mass Relay.

Yes, the credits you find in the Guards' Lockers fuel the starship. It's like a futuristic Shell Station. :patel

man, i hate picking up games like this after a couple of weeks off. I have to relearn all this basic shit about 10x over the course of the game. I spent 5 minutes trying to figure out how to reload yesterday, before turning to the manual in disgust.

I realized I really don't enjoy car based sandbox games and their missions.  I'd never finished a sandbox game until this gen.  Crackdown, Just Cause, Infamous, Assassin's Creed 2 were a lot of fun and made me want to keep playing and finish all of them.  But what they all have in common is cars don't matter and the majority of missions aren't CHASE THIS GUY IN YOUR CAR.  Otoh, I stopped playing GTAIV by the 2nd city, only got a few hours in Saints Row 2 and after about 3 hours I think I may be done with RFG.  Car missions are not my cup of tea.  I love blowing shit up in RFG and it does blow up beautifully.  But I'm already sick of the car stuff and lack of mid-mission checkpoints like GTA.

I'm the exact opposite. Running around and jumping about in sandbox worlds like Crackdown or AC 2 I find quite tedious. I need a car and at least a gun before I find the experience immersive.

Red Faction is another good one where although I travel on foot in a lot of areas the long drives are broken up by me hopping in some sort of vehicle.

It probably has something to do with whether a person is a platformer fan in general. GTA/Saints Row etc, aren't about platforming. If there is a large building you can be sure there will be an elevator somewhere or a plane or something which is how you will get there.

Yeah, it's been a surprisingly awesome generation for platformers. People just need to let go of the traditional notion of platformers (which sometimes leads to mild hilarity when those same people bemoan the lack of new ideas in gaming today), and embrace the new face of platforming. Bigger, better, stronger, faster and definitely sexier.

Also, in the more linear but also more stylish category

Finished Borderlands.  It's not really that much fun by yourself - in fact, towards the end it becomes a fairly miserable grind.  I think I've already had my fill of this franchise.  They're gonna have to do some major revamping to get me interested in it again.

Honestly I feel that way about most loot games. Playing them by yourself is mostly boring and that includes even some of the very good ones like Titan Quest.

I'm with Bebpo on the open world game thing.  Sometimes it feels like just traveling around is a pain and sometimes you want to just point yourself in a direction and get there.  In infamous and crackdown you can scale buildings in seconds and get where you need to go.  I'm sure if someone added up all the time you spend just getting to the action in sandbox games, it would be a ridiculously huge number.  For those types of games, I like what Mafia did by having a linear game set in an open world.  I guess The Getaway did that too, but fuck The Getaway.

Still, I think there needs to be some balance.  Prototype is the best example of how to fail.  The game makes you so powerful that you feel out of control and it's made worse when missions are all the way across the map.  That's the worst part when you have to drive across the map to do something.  Fuck prototype.

Honestly I feel that way about most loot games. Playing them by yourself is mostly boring and that includes even some of the very good ones like Titan Quest.

I think Borderlands suffers a lot more than any other loot game because the skills and inventory are so basic.  Basic isn't even the word I'm looking for.  Even saying a skill set exists feels like giving it too much credit.  With other loot games at least you have times when you feel like you're working towards something even while you're going through the game.  Recently in Torchlight, I had some weapons I would keep in my inventory knowing that after leveling up x amount I would finally be able to use it.  Borderlands didn't really have that feeling, for me at least.

and stalker pripyat continues to be great.  There was one situation in the second are that seems like it would be one of those good/evil choices in games with a morality system.  I play as a good guy naturally and I still tried to be diplomatic, but the game fucks you over big time for thinking survival isn't the main concern.  Guy was trying to get about 15k from me, so I took out my shotgun and killed him and everyone in the bandit camp.  Hell, I even went back to the bandit leader and took back the artifact I gave him for the ransom.  That prick.

I started playing Modern Warfare 2.  At first I was like :o look at the budget on this game! So much animation going on.  60fps!  Lots of textures!  Exciting scripting!
Then by like 3 stages in dying every 45 seconds when some random dude pops up behind me while I'm shooting more people than I see per day irl, I'm kinda  :-\
I think this is the worst I've been at any game this generation.  I swear my screen has blood on it most of the time.  Too much rpging and not enough shooting dudes in the face.

This reminds me, my friend and I thought about something I want to post here: How much money do you think has been spent on boob physics in the history of video games? I mean, every game goes out of their way now to animate boobs, how much money is that costing?

I agree there is a repetition issue in Borderlands simply because it lacks the amount of customization that is typical in a point and click loot game. All loot games though in general outside of maybe Diablo 2 though suffer from issues of boredom in single player especially if you play them in longish stretches.

I think I was level 19 when I gave up on Borderlands.  I felt that the fun missions were getting fewer and further between while the shit grind missions became the main focus.  At the start of the game, I thought this was one of the more fun games I've played but towards the end, I was just going through the motions.  Sent it back to Gamefly.

Not a bad game by any means but I hope to see a lot of improvements for Borderlands 2.

Speaking of Gamefly, they claim I never sent in Bayonetta and that I sent in Kung Fu Panda instead.  I have never once in my life owned Kung Fu Panda.

Playing Red Faction Guerrilla. I'm playing on normal and this game is kicking my ass hardcore. I'm only on the second section (Dust) and I can hardly complete any of the destruction side missions without getting wiped out in an instant. Once some guys start to gang up on you, you're basically done.

Is this a list of JRPGs you've enjoyed?

I've tried to play through the KH games again but they're so bad I couldn't bring myself to do it. They've aged horribly, and the plot is trash.
