magus, there were 3 Atelier Iris games released in the US on PS2... they're more traditional/orthodox RPGs than the rest of the Atelier series though.

I am still playing RoF. Game is getting a good deal harder, it really wants me to make the most out of my items and special ammo... About to start chapter 13. Thinking of doing the bonus dungeon in it too, as well as all the Arena battles.

anyway i beated that boss on blue dragon, buffing did wonders altough i can't help but wonder WHY THE HECK IS THE DEFENSIVE BUFF NOT ON THE SHADOW WITH DEFENSIVE SKILL!
jesus this game is distinguished mentally-challenged >:(

uh anyway... i had a question, when you select party member under their portrait there is a shadow below them, for example shu has the dragon shadow, while the robo has the robot shadow... is this just a suggestion as to what shadow pair with them or does something happen if you give the dragon shadow to shu and so on?

Vampire the Masquerade: Bloodlines - On several occasions I've made a valiant attempt to complete what I consider to be one of the best Western RPGs of the past ten years, but the greatness of the first two-thirds fades quickly in the final stretch and I'm left with little desire to continue. As with Arcanum, there are numerous problems here, many of which are fixed by the fans but far from all, that are thankfully overshadowed by greatness elsewhere. It's also probably one of the best pieces of vampire fiction this side of Bram Stoker.

I've had this game since it came out.  It has never ran well enough on any of the PCs I have owned since 2004.   :-\

It's pretty unoptimized, but it runs fine with some lower settings on my 2008 macbook unibody (2.2 ghz c2D, nvidia 9400m, 2gb ddr3)

Yeah, everyone has a recommended shadow and they get better stats and maybe other advantages like faster xp growth when using them.

I think I  stuck with shu (dragon), shiro (whatever he uses in the first game), and the robot dude using the beetle.  Shu had attacking and attack buffs I think, shiro had healing and some buffs, and robot had def buffs.  Later on though I switched out robot/beetle for one of the attack buff ones.

How is the Crono's death only five minutes long? You have to get the Epoch and then do sidequests to resurrect Crono. It's hardly five minutes.

Yeah, nothing helped.  Now I *am* trying to play it on an HP Mini 311 netbook, but I don't see why it wouldn't be able to handle a game that old.  I can run other similar games just fine.  It was just as choppy and unplayable on my older top-of-the-line Alienware laptop back in 2004.  I figure when I finally get a nice powerful desktop I'll finally be able to play it.  Maybe.

I've been playing a decent amount of Mushihime Futari 1.5 lately. I think I'll finally dedicate the time and practice it takes to clear this game. I just made it up to the final boss (Larsa) with 3 lives left but I still died because I was using fucking Reco. She kills bosses so slowly and Larsa has some really hard patterns that get tougher the longer they last. I at least managed a new highscore (201m) and the achievement associated with it, so I'm satisfied for now. Guess it's time to hit training mode.

I just wish Reco's laser was a little stronger. Obviously her advantage over Palm is her spread-shot, so a weaker laser is to be expected. But she probably takes twice as long to kill bosses, and that can cause some problems. In Black Label, they basically gave her the boss-killing power of Palm, which explains why I cleared that game in just a few tries. :bow overpowered characters

Replay ME1. But do only the story planets and their sidequests. The sidequests like the mineral shit don't factor into ME2 so they're a waste of time.

What exactly do you like about Alpha Protocol?  Even "non-conformist" gaming podcasts have been panning it, mostly for the graphics and the combat, so I'm guessing you liked everything else about it.

If so, I'm not so sure anymore if you'll like ME2 even though it's much better than ME1.  Most of the ME2 improvements were in the areas of graphics and combat but if you liked Alpha Protocol, then you probably don't care that much about them. There are even less RPG elements in ME2 than the first game.  The morality system which you hated in ME1 is still mostly unchanged in the sequel although the renegade options are much cooler and funnier.

It's too bad that you hate ME1 that much because I can't remember any series that handled the save-game transition so well.  Forcing yourself to play ME1 just to see how your choices carry over to the sequel is probably not worth it though.   It's cool to see how all the little details carried over into the sequel but none of it really matters.  Besides, there are editors for the PC version that let you change stuff that happened in ME1 to whatever you liked.

What exactly do you like about Alpha Protocol?  Even "non-conformist" gaming podcasts have been panning it, mostly for the graphics and the combat, so I'm guessing you liked everything else about it.

I think it would be easier to ask, "what don't I like about AP?"  because then I'd just say...occasional weak graphics and buggiest game I've ever played.  Everytime I play for 5 hours I hit at least one bug per hour.  Also I think there are some mandatory alarms in the game (not 100% sure on this) which is frustrating if you are going for a perfect no alarms, no kills run like I am.

Everything else about the game is perfect.  The only wrpg I've ever played that has been this good has been Fallout 2.  It's not just that the story/character relations is amazing next gen stuff that blows away every game ever made.  The gameplay is SO GOOD.  If you play stealth like I am and try to get through every stage without being seen and not killing anyone, the game is better than MGS or SC in pure stealth gameplay.  The guards can see further (though their scope is narrow), the level designs are great puzzles, the objectives are varied and the skills are awesome.  Even the hacking mini-games are fun in this.  Love the shooting mechanics as well from a stealth perspective.  Having to get close and line up a shot makes it tougher and more fun than MGS/SC because you can't just tranq some guy from before he can even see you.  You actually have to get close up where it's dangerous and sneak around him or finding a hiding spot close by and snipe him off.

And then yeah, the story branching is incredible.  It's everything that makes Heavy Rain's branching impressive with 10x the amount of freedom to effect the narrative.

I'm about 13 hours in now and maybe 2/3rds through.  Once I finish I'm planning on doing a 2nd run immediately and doing a RAMBO playthrough as a guy who goes guns blazing and has anger management issues and yells at everyone so they either hate him or they are afraid of him.  Then I'm going to do a 3rd playthrough and try to get the 100% perfect no alarm/no kill run which I'm gonna miss slightly this time, plus I'll make a lot of different decisions now that I see how things stemmed from them.

I think the review scores just show how fucked up games journalism is now.  Almost every rpg gamer who is playing AP and those who've finished it say it's EXCELLENT and GoTY material.  Pretty much everyone agrees it is miles beyond Mass Effect 1 & Fallout 3, yet the media drooled all over those and scored them extremely well.  I dunno, maybe Graphics really are THAT important to game reviewers, but in that case how did Fallout 3 score well when it's an ugly looking game.

Summer of PS2 and no job rolls on!

I put .hack on hold because it's PS2-era 3D graphics + randomly generated dungeons were giving me eye cancer. I still want to try to finish the first Quadrilogy though, because the story and concept is really cool. It's just the random dungeons are so bleh, and the "corrupted" graphics don't help, they're kind of seizure inducing.

So I picked up some Mana Khemia 1 and it rocks. :bow Glorious 2D panty raiding action :bow2 :bow Alchemy :bow2 I should go to GAF and make an |OT| GUST INCORPORATED APPRECIATION THREAD, because I know Prole is the only one here that plays Mana Khemia/Atlerier Iris games. Atelier Rorona and Ar Tonelico 3 coming soon for da Triple PUT YOUR GUNS ON!!
