I think the review scores just show how fucked up games journalism is now.  Almost every rpg gamer who is playing AP and those who've finished it say it's EXCELLENT and GoTY material.  Pretty much everyone agrees it is miles beyond Mass Effect 1 & Fallout 3, yet the media drooled all over those and scored them extremely well.  I dunno, maybe Graphics really are THAT important to game reviewers, but in that case how did Fallout 3 score well when it's an ugly looking game.

In terms of character building and story, it's brilliant and the affects on the story and situations based on that are incredible. It's one of the deepest games I've ever played in that regard. The characters are also fleshed out quite well, not only from personal encounters but by the excellent email system.

I think it scores poorly because the tutorial and first mission are largely terrible, the combat is hopeless until you get some decent perks and abilities.

The graphics aren't bad, however the level design and art style are pretty generic and things look way too similar with just a different texture on it.

You should join us in the AP thread bebpo.

was staying out because of spoilers.  Just beat it though so will join in!

Took me 18 hours.  Definitely the best rpg I've played this gen.  It was like playing Fallout 2 in 3d in terms of the role-playing experience.

Summer of PS2 and no job rolls on!

I put .hack on hold because it's PS2-era 3D graphics + randomly generated dungeons were giving me eye cancer. I still want to try to finish the first Quadrilogy though, because the story and concept is really cool. It's just the random dungeons are so bleh, and the "corrupted" graphics don't help, they're kind of seizure inducing.

So I picked up some Mana Khemia 1 and it rocks. :bow Glorious 2D panty raiding action :bow2 :bow Alchemy :bow2 I should go to GAF and make an |OT| GUST INCORPORATED APPRECIATION THREAD, because I know Prole is the only one here that plays Mana Khemia/Atlerier Iris games. Atelier Rorona and Ar Tonelico 3 coming soon for da Triple PUT YOUR GUNS ON!!

i'm proud of you,weeaboo unites!

Shiren the Wanderer is so awesome. It's a shame most of the NA Mystery Dungeon games are about pokemon and chocobos and gay shit, because this really has me wanting more roguelikes

I've cleared all the story paths in SDvsRaw so now I guess it's time to grind and finish off FFXIII. Or I could just trade it in and start Mass Effect 2.

Just 1CC'd Mushihime Futari 1.5 Original with Palm. :D It must have been a miracle, because I made it through all of stage 5 without a single death. I was a little nervous when I finally made it to Larsa which made me die twice to patterns I should have dodged, but I still killed the bitch. Feels good man. I guess I'll finally start playing Maniac mode, but I'd still like to 1CC Original mode with Reco (mainly for the achievement). I need to start putting more time into Espgaluda 2 and Ketsui as well, and then Death Smiles is out in a few weeks...

Playing Dynasty Warriors Strikeforce and holy shit, it is bad.  As a Musou whore, I can barely stand to really play it.  The game definitely shows its PSP roots and Koei didn't really care about the quality of the port up.  As a result, it looks like an early PS2 game and runs like one too, with slideshow-like slowdown that happens anytime some significant activity takes place on the screen.  This shit is meant for the Wii, not the PS3 and 360.

Alan Wake yes, I dont plan on ever playing RDR

Right now I'm finishing Infinite Undiscovery - only ~25 more items for compulsive (incl. needing to defeat Ethereal Queen), leaving me at 999/1000

I got bored of Alpha Protocol at the moment

so i finished bioshock this week.  man, what an assy game.  i've heard a lot of people say they've played it recently and thought it hadn't aged well, but i think i still woulda hated it even when it came out.  i'm boycotting games that fuck up their pacing with a constant stream of boring audio logs GOD I HATE THAT.  and how is this game supposed to be scary when everything looks so cartoony and you're hearing "WELCOME TO THE CIRCUS OF VALUE" every time you turn a corner?  the whole game was easy, too, including that weak last boss that went down in like two minutes.  combat sucked, story sucked, atmosphere sucked.  fuck that game.

on the other hand i went back and finished mass effect earlier after letting it sit for a few months.  i liked the endgame so much i almost wanted to replay the whole game, but i picked up me2 and i'm gonna jump strait into that instead.

Halfway through playing Seiken Densetsu 3 with my friend. I made a rage post about this game a few months back saying how fucking BOOOOOOOOOOOORING it is, but it's actually pretty cool with co-op. If it maintains this level of quality throughout then I'd say it's roughly as good as Secret of Mana, since Secret of Mana was way better in the beginning but then fell apart half way through

I gave up on Link's Awakening since piece of shit Lameboy corrupted my save when I was in the second-to-last dungeon.

Also started up Shiren of Wanderer which is great, but I'm gonna finish FF13 before I get too hooked on it.

I've started playing Yakuza 3 again. Haven't touched it in a couple months but I'm gonna go back and finish it off. I'm up to chapter 12 so far and it looks like the game is really starting to get serious. Whenever I'm in Ryukyu doing the orphanage stuff, it just feels like a sidestory, or filler. It's not bad, but it's not exactly the Yakuza I know and love.

I've pretty much finished Resonance of Fate as well. Just gotta do Neverland and finish the rest of the arena missions before tying up the story. Definitely one of the best RPGs this gen and the RPGotY so far. Third time's the charm I guess!

edit: welp, I finished Yakuza 3. I had no idea I was so close to the end. I guess I will go around and do all the sidequests and whatnot for the trophies. Pretty awesome game; can't wait to play Yakuza 4 and Kenzan!

So I attempted to play Super Mario Galaxy again today. I had attempted this some time ago, but the intro movie and the bullshit of chasing rabbits and boring exposition about stars and whatnot killed me.

I managed to get passed all that hogwash this time, but I'm struggling with the controls and the camera. Like, I don't feel comfortable with the way mario starts into a run or how he interacts with ledges and other small things. And because of the camera position I'm often feel I'm taking risks when jumping on enemies.

The camera is a bitch on the smaller planets too, like I get that they want to impress me with the concept of running around a sphere, but why not adjust the camera as I run to the bottom or something? It exasperates the control issues I'm having to the nth degree.

And I'm a little over the whole: find one star, get booted out and go back in and go a little further along the same path to the next star, do it again!, etc.

Does it get better later on, or are these issues persistent?

I played 64 back in the day, but I hated that controller so I don't think I ever played too much of it. Played Sunshine for a bit, but the shotty felt like an annoying contrivance to change shit up for the sake of it.

Another issue I had with galaxy was the levels being so many small islands I never really got a sense of where shit was. Maybe I get that later when levels start becoming bigger, but it's not really serving up as a great incentive to keep trucking.

Juggling a bunch right now:

Nier - Around five or six hours in, I'm having a blast. It may be the ugliest PS3 game I own, but I've been hopelessly addicted since I started. The dungeons are so much fun and the boss battles are fantastic.

Red Dead Redemption - GOTY

Super Mario Galaxy 2 - Absolutely wonderful game. A true joy to play, all the best parts of 2D and 3D Mario in one awesome package. Surpasses the also great original in every way.

Ratchet and Clank: ToD - After putting this on hold for a while, started it up again. Just about done with it, I like it a lot. I've only played the first Ratchet, which is probably why I'm not tired of the formula yet and I'll definitely pick up ACiT at some point in the future since I liked this so much.

The last few days I've been playing Dawn of War 2 co-op with a friend of mine. Beat the game and got everyone to level 20. Force Commander with Terminator armor :bow2
Great game. some shitty moments here and there but really fun to play. especially co-op.

Today I redownloaded Half Life 2. Got to Nova Prospekt. Perfect timing when I saw the Freeman E3 image.

I started up a couple games last night. I'm about 5 hours into Nier and it's really really good. The setting, story, and characters are interesting, the music is great, the combat is fun, the bosses are awesome. The graphics look straight out of 2006, but other than that I'm very impressed so far.

On the other hand, I started up X-Blades, and it's one of the worst games I've ever played in my life. The controls are abysmal and it just generally plays like shit. Avoid like the plague.

Is it just me or is Dark Void kind of bad because it's boring?

I mean the combat and stuff is C- Gears, but it's not offensive and I liked the intro part where it was like Crimson Skies with a dude and would like to play more of that gameplay style.  Plus I like that it stars Drake.  But the level design is the most boring game I've played in a while.
It's like
1.  Run forward for a bit
2.  Fight a bunch of robots
repeat for 30 mins a level.

Can barely stay awake playing it.  :\

I also started playing SMT Nocturne again (I never beat it) and it is still awesome.  Much better than Strange Journey, imo.

And I still have to go back and work on The Witcher.  I hate leaving games incomplete. :maf

Just finished Nier. I loved pretty much everything about it. I really only have two complaints: first of all, they kinda pull a DMC4 on you
spoiler (click to show/hide)
you have to redo a couple of the dungeons you've already completed in order to accomplish a new objective, although the puzzles are different and there's a new boss. Still lame. And to add to the DMC4 comparison, you can replay half the game with another character for their side of the story...
[close]
and secondly, it's a little too easy. I was doing a speed run on normal in order to get the achievement for beating it in less than 15 hours (I finished in 12), so I skipped basically every sidequest and never upgraded my weapons. It didn't seem to make much difference though since enemies still died in 3 or 4 hits. I guess when I go for Ending B, I will play on hard.

But at any rate, Nier is excellent. It's funny, I had low expectations from both Nier and Resonance of Fate, and they wound up being two of my favorite RPGs this gen.

Yeah I'll expound a bit

Pros:

-Being able to pick your characters and classes is great, even if some combos can be abused. Lots of cool synergistic group comps, and having 6 possible characters with 4 possible endgame classes each provides lotsa replay value
-TECHS. Full screen techs are the shit
-Boss fights aren't just a shitfest in which you menu-cast your strongest magic ad nauseam. Speaking of boss fights, there're a lot of badass bosses.
-The graphics are pretty impressive. Very detailed backgrounds and sprites
-No timed attacks. I dunno if this should count as a pro because it probably comes down to preference, but I think that the game is much better paced as a button masher with the way the classes and techs work. Secret of Evermore and Mana's combat is fun in a measured, economical sort of way, but playing a level 50 Deathhand in wolf form and watching big numbers pop up all over the place as you decimate rabites and build up your tech bar is just as great
-Storyline can change depending on which party members you choose, which I guess is cool if you're one of those losers that enjoys both generic JRPG plots and choose your own adventure books
-Inventory system that allows you to stockpile items, whereas in Mana you were limited to 9 per

Cons:

-Like Secret of Mana, it suffers from an annoying midgame. Lots of flying around in the shitty open world with a shitty top-down angle, looking for the tiny strip of land that you can land on, with your only guide being the flashing dot indicating the general location of a dungeon. In fact, I think it's even worse than Mana because there is no specific order in which the 8 bosses have to be killed, and since the dots don't disappear after you complete the related dungeon and everything looks the fucking same when you're flying, you'll likely spend a good chunk of time wandering around like a distinguished mentally-challenged kid abandoned in Wal-Mart
-As demi said, the music is generally pretty weak, at least for Square standards
-The menus suck hairy asshole. Dunno why they abandoned ring menus for equipping items in favor of this laggy shit
-Obtaining your desired final classes and the ultimate armor would literally take 10 or so hours of mindless grinding if it weren't for the beauty of save state abuse

Think that covers most of it. I had enough fun with it that I'll play it again as a different character if I can get another friend to control the third character instead of stupid AI. Shame it desyncs in netplay.

Is Sword of Mana worth a play? Did anyone here actually even play Sword of Mana?

Choosing right now between PC: Splinter Cell Conviction, Assassin's Creed 2, Batman:AA,  360: Bayonetta, Red Dead Redemption , PS3:Demon's Souls.  I want to give Demon's Souls a try but I don't want to turn into a monstrous Sfag since I've just finished Heavy Rain and GOW3 not too long before it.

Batman is good and short, but easy. Bayonetta is amazing and as long as your average action game. It can be difficult your first time through on normal if you suck at japanese action games. Haven't played the rest.

All good choices except RDR. You will play on Easy anyway, so any game will be fine.

Think I'll take your pick.  I haven't really played a great Jap fighting-action game this gen.  DMC3 was kinda bland and NG2 had too many problems to be considered great.

Nice try but I always play on at least normal and I almost never use cheats on the 1st play-through.

Been away for a week so got down with a DS, played Castlevania: OOE. Never played through a Castlevania game before. Love Super Metroid and finished Shadow Complex last week so I'm pretty down with the formula. Order of Ecclesia is damn good, I found it more challenging than both SM and SC too.
