Red Dead Redemption Undead Nightmare

pretty disappointed with this.  I liked RDR a lot, but zombies and the objectives and a lot of the larger ideas they had aren't fun.  It seems like only headshots, burning, or explosives kill zombies that basically all just rush you and the gunplay doesn't hold up against these guys.  In the main game it's a bunch of shootouts with enemies, but because the game is more open, you have a lot of ways you can tackle all those battles; here it is just:  enemies rush, dead eye to head, run around collecting ammo, repeat.  Objectives all seem boring too; visit grave yard, burn x number of coffins, repeat x number of times.  Recapturing towns is kill x number of zumbers, kill more zumbers, repeat.

then they took away the quick travel from camp sites (basically everywhere except the towns).  Wouldn't be a big problem except those can be attacked by zombies and need to periodically defended again.

at least the mythical animals and stuff are cool.  flaming horse war :rock

DCU Online

I made a heroic, dual-blade wielding, fire-powered chick. I tried to use Zatanna as my base character model, but there are no fish-net stockings in the costumes selection. So instead I went with thigh-high boots and a mini-skirt, to go with my business top and top hat. Then I found out that the in-game armor replaces your costume anyway, which is stupid. Game is pretty cool so far, though.

Unless they changed it in the full game, you can keep the stats of new armor without changing the appearance.  It's in one of the menus.  As you play you unlock even more options that weren't there at the start.

Did God of War always control this bad? Why does it feel like playing in molasses?

GOW controls have always been laggy but the janky, unstable framerate in GOW3 makes it worse.

Be sure to download the patch first.  Otherwise, you're gonna be frustrated by lots of deaths from double jumps not working.

Also why are the QTEs on all sides of my TV? WTF? That's distinguished mentally-challenged... Now I gotta watch the sides of my screen instead of seeing Kratos beat the shit out of something.

It gives you a more cinematic experience by moving all the prompts off the action.  With regards to the double jumps, they wanted to put more weight on them and make them feel more realistic.

The QTEs being on the sides of the screen is one of the better changes in GoW3. I can hit all of them without having to stare at the area above the monster's head just by using my peripheral vision. Don't even need to look at what button comes up since X is always on the bottom, O is always on the right, and so on.

they put it at the edge and also flash that side of the screen.  I guess it's supposed to be easier to register and let you see the action, but it threw me off.  Heavy Rain had the right idea of putting the button prompt on or near the action happening in the game, like in the middle or corner.

Some spots in Heavy Rain were so frustrating when the prompts kept spinning around and you can't read the words.  But I guess that's what they were intentionally going for.

Yeah. There's one spot that kinda annoyed me with Madison.

When she goes to the surgeon's house, he asks her a question. O is no, X is yes. Then he gives her a drink, and after a while he asks if she's going to drink it. Suddenly, X is no and O is yes, and it's hard to see because it's spinning around and blinking and shit. So I accidentally press O, she drinks it, and gets drugged. Had to quit and restart from my last checkpoint. :maf

Still a good game though. I guess I don't mind QTEs when that's all the game consists of. Like Dragon's Lair or Time Traveler.

Started Deadly Premonition. Freaky game is freaky. But the visuals are really, really discount. The menus are especially bad; I'd assume this was all programmer-art except there are a couple camera moves that make me think a designer at least touched it.

Played some DC Universe Online today and it's pretty fun. I'm not really an MMO player, so I couldn't say how it stacks up with WoW and the like, but it seems like a pretty solid game, although maybe that's just because flying around and shooting cops with dual pistols is just that much fun.

Hmm, I'm starting to think Dodonpachi Daifukkatsu 1.5 isn't that great. Bomb style isn't very fun to play since the laser is so weak, strong style isn't very fun to play because it's too powerful, and power style isn't very fun to play because you only get no bombs*, and instead have to rely on hypers to make it through wave after wave of undodgeable bullet patterns. Consistently activating the Ura bosses is pretty annoying too. But I dunno, maybe I'm just not feeling it right now. I gotta spend some more time with it before deciding if I want to buy Black Label or not... but that Ketsui arrange mode looks too good to pass up.

What's interesting is this is the first bomba Cave game in like forever.  The regular edition is already down to 3400yen.  Cave games always hold their price around 5800-6800yen or if they're rare the price goes up, but DDFK is a total bomb.  Wonder what the logic is behind it.  Either people just really dislike the arcade game, or the $5 iphone version killed all their sales.

Releasing a very cheap version of the same game, or its immediate predecessor's "Greatest Hits" version, just prior to launching the version you've just invested more money in is always a bad idea.

Ketsui was a pretty big bomb too, but yeah DFK didn't do so well it seems. I'm sure it's really fun once you put the time into it and learn to chain the stages properly, but it's just not that satisfying to play for survival since it's either really easy (strong) or really hard (power). Plus the excessive bullet cancelling required in DFK is just not my style.

But anyway, I got my copy of Otomedius G today. I wasn't expecting too much out of it, but the game's pretty fun. I'll probably buy Otomedius Excellent when that comes out instead of waiting for the bomb prices.

And now I'm gonna play some Dai Ou Jou since the patch is out early. :rock

edit: Well, Dai Ou Jou is pretty fucking awesome. Black Label is a nice improvement over the original game since you get hypers more often and it makes the scoring more fun. I hope Cave's next game is a throwback to 2002-2003, in the vein of DOJ and Ketsui. Very little bullet canceling, no crazy gimmicks, and tons of awesome bullet patterns that you're meant to dodge. Kinda like Mushi Futari.

I've also just recently started getting back into SSF4 after a ~6 month hiatus.  Focusing on getting better at option select and footsies.  Going to Winter Brawl next month with some friends (mostly just to drink in Philadelphia, but also to peep some MvC3 and SSF4:AE action) and I'd at least like to survive past the first round.

GOW is the most overrated game of 2010.  Relative to the time of release, it's easily the worst in the series.  Also, Kratos went from an anti-hero to just a douchebag that only anti-socials can relate to.

I like the GOW series. Especially relative to that genre where the more technical it gets the more I generally lose interest in those games. But I never understood the appeal of Kratos. He always seemed like a dick bag to me.

I need to finish Nier and Bayo before next month. Then my ps3 will go back to being my netflix and Street Fighter IV system, though my house mate is buying Marvel vs Capcom 3 so I guess it will turn into the netflix and Marvel vs Capcom 3 system.

Dragon Quest VI, Tactics Ogre: LUCT psp, and Radiant Historia all released next month. Also, Ghost Trick just came out for ds.

It takes me forever to beat console games these days.  :-\

I like the GOW series. Especially relative to that genre where the more technical it gets the more I generally lose interest in those games. But I never understood the appeal of Kratos. He always seemed like a dick bag to me.

In the first game he was an angry guy that was kinda badass since he was taking on a god and killing giant beasts.  In the second, he was taking on gods, including Zeus, and he was even angrier about being betrayed; again, kinda cool because he's one dude against the gods.  In GoW3, he's just a cunt and the entire game feels like you're treading the same ground.

They tried to make him more sympathetic and explain that his rage was like an addiction and weakness that he couldn't control, but they had to go to such extremes to portray it.  In the end (or beginning, really) he just seems angry for the sake of being angry, and angry towards everyone.
spoiler (click to show/hide)
The titans betray him...for no actual reason, which was a smart plan considering this is the same dude that killed a bunch of gods and helped all of them, right? so the rest of the game is him regaining his powers to reach almost the exact same point where the game began.  It's a lot of fluff to pad out the time between you fighting Zeus...again.
[close]
I could get into why Kratos is such a cunt in God of War 3, but yeah, watch any single cutscene and bask in his cuntiness.

Say what you will about david jaffe, but the idea he threw out about how GoW3 should play out would have been a lot more interesting.  You basically kill Zeus and the gods at the beginning of the game, then gods from other faiths all form up to take that seat of power and you have to fight them.  Would have made the game more interesting in general since, I assume, it would jump between different architecture and designs for those different bad guys (as opposed to all Greek).

For whatever reason I don't find Rockstar games this gen particularly engaging.  They're competent games, but they just feel so dull in a gen where there's a dozen other sandbox games by other companies that are much more interesting.

I like just walking around RDR for the atmosphere and because there's really no other wild west sandbox world out there, but I dunno if I'll play more than 10-20% of the story.  That's about as far as I got in GTA4.

There's a good blog post by Stephen Poole on why he finds RDR dull and boring. It's interesting because this is the same guy that has MGS4 in the top5 of his best games of the past decade list. I wonder if it has something to with eastern design philosophies versus western ones.

Well I finished Mexico in RDR and I'm starting to like the game again. I guess it really is as bad as everyone says...

The game has lots of ups and downs. It starts out boring, then picks up after a couple hours. Then you hit Mexico and the game suuuuucks. Then it starts to pick up again during the last couple missions in Mexico. Now I'm hoping it'll stay good until the finish.

I've been playing the crap out of Dissidia 2 prologue and it's a surprisingly deep, balanced, a great fighter.  The addition of assists has added a lot of depth and everything seems balanced for the better.  Feels less of a party fighter and more of a technical Virtual On x Street Fighter that might be able to hold its own at tourneys.  Playing it on hard you get some really intense satisfying matches with even the AI.

Was on the fence before, but now that I've gotten deeper under the surface of the gameplay I'm gonna pick it up day 1.  FF fanservice + quality fighting game = worth my money.

eeeehhh i hated playing the original dissidia on hard, you attack the cpu dodge and counter, then you dodge the counter and counter yourself, then the cpu dodge your counter and counter itself, like you are playing a dragon ball z game and this repeat until someone (you) gets tired of doing this or someone screws up his dodge (usualy dodging toward a wall)

so in short it's impossible to deal any damage if you take any sort of initiative which is really stupid and why if i'm not mistaken a lot of people tought exdeath was one of the best character (since he's all about sitting around on his fat ass blocking and dodging stuff)

there are a few skills that deal damage completly ignoring all that affinity bullshit, trust me! they will help make your life a lot easier

i think you should have at now at least that counter move that returns half the damage you receive to the sender

later on you also learns spell that also instantly change the elemental affinity of your weapon, those help reducing any potential headache/raaaaaaaaaaaaaage too

Yeah, it's surprisingly good. Beginning was weak though, and the first gang being called 'the reapers' is pretty funny and kinda sums up how generic so many elements of the game are.

The best part is the tower climb in the 2nd city.

Game isn't perfect, like 99% of sandbox games it's repetitive and you just do a few things over and over, but I liked the combat, the rail grinds, the climbing for hidden objects, the boss fights, and the story outside the ending.  Looking forward to #2 this year more than most of the other Sony exclusives.

I really liked Infamous. Only Crackdown 1 tops it in open world genre as far as I am concerned.

I'm about 3/4th through The 3rd Birthday now and the shooting is so good.  The guns all feel different and they feel just right.  Lots of weapons and rpg style weapon customization is very cool.  I think regardless of how this game sells Square Enix HAS to make the sequel on X360/PS3.  They have on their hands the first good Japanese developed third person shooter that isn't made by Mikami.  If T3B was on consoles it'd be T3B single player > Gears single player imo.  On handhelds it loses some points for control.  But the weapons and the enemies make for really fun battles.  The entire game so far has been a non-stop blast outside a few quirky control parts; it really reminds me of how much fun I had every second of playing Vanquish.  Seems like another great game out of SE.

Been playing Batman:AA from the beginning since last night.  I'm enjoying it quite a bit so far even though the combat is not that great.  It's just a little too hard to link up long combos in order to do the cool special moves.  Almost every time I try to do a long combo, the next enemy is just too far away or the combo ends a bit too quickly.

The stealth sections are pretty cool though.  You really do feel kinda like Batman when you're jumping in and out of the shadows to take out thugs.  Graphics are also quite nice with maximum settings and full physx effects on.   The physx effects are surprisingly not superfluous and adds a lot of atmosphere to the gameworld.  There are some sections that feel too similar or have that generic UE3 look but overall the game does a fine job of bringing Arkham Asylum to life.  Also, Scarecrow's levels are simply spectacular and makes me wanna splash $500 on a 3d monitor just to experience them again in 3D.

I'm currently almost done with the botanical gardens.  How much longer do I have to go?

finished prototype,i don't really have much else to say that i didn't already said the first time since even tough the game is able to mix-it up enough to not make it feel repetitive, the core game still remains about throwing shit around, eating people and stealing stuff

just finished this.  overall it was a great game.  not nearly as awesome as untouchable greats like old-school silent hill, but still had me genuinely scared plenty of times.  the graphics are great and hiding from enemies is really tense most of the time.  however, there's way too much time spent searching empty rooms for tinderboxes and notes, and the game runs out of tricks well before it's over.  also some of the stuff at the end

kills a lot of the atmosphere.  the game is short though and worth trying for anyone who loves a good horror game.
