Get Red Dead Redemption or Saints Row 2. Haven't played SR2 yet but SR1 is the best sandbox game I've played this gen next to RDR.

Since you like your sandbox games to be more whacky, I'd say go for Saints Row 2.

after darksiders i was thinking of picking a sandbox game but i want to dodge gta4 because i have played rockstar games and they are laaaaaaaaaaaaame

i saw a video of just cause 2 and i'm not really sure i can resist the temptation of a game featuring stuff that explodes,a grappling hook and airplane stealing otherwise i was thinking of either saints row 2 or crackdown?

Red Faction Guerrilla and Crackdown are the two most fun sandbox games I've ever played. Just Cause 2 looks pretty good as well, but the first game was absolutely awful so I never tried the sequel.

Actually, play Bully. It's the only great game Rockstar has ever made.

The Warriors is better than Bully.

Red Dead Redemption, GTA2, GTA Chinatown, Table Tennis, Max Payne 2, Smuggler's Run are also great and you're an idiot.

unthankfully its at the part where you have a fucking child on your back that wont shut up.

i got by that part but i still just cant seem to get into it. the shooting just feels janky. plus there isnt any quick save from what i can tell. real lame.

Table Tennis might be good, I liked the demo. Max Payne 2 was made by Remedy. Everything else they've made is varying degrees of mediocre or bad.

A big empty world...that's full of places to blow up and otherwise decimate with a variety of heavy-weaponry and vehicles in an island-hopping rampage of terror and insanity. Yep, don't see how anybody could be interested in that.

I guess if you're the kind of person that wants realistic characters haunted by their demons in a storyline filled with drama and betrayal about a blah blah blah then maybe 20 minutes will be as much as you can muster.

I seem to enjoy sandbox games for different reasons than other people. I don't like doing random rampages because those get boring. I like sandbox games that offer a ridiculous amount of content and variety and things to do and challenge me while doing so and constantly reward me by danging carrot by carrot towards the next odd job or sub mission.

Games like Crackdown bore the shit out of me unless played on co-op. All you do in that game is take on bland ai characters who have zero difficulty or challenge in killing them and run/jump through green hoops. Boring and utterly simplistic.

I guess if you're the kind of person that wants realistic characters haunted by their demons in a storyline filled with drama and betrayal about a blah blah blah then maybe 20 minutes will be as much as you can muster.

I get what he's saying. If it's just mayhem with nothing to do, it sounds like it'd be boring. Sounds like Crackdown.

You get constant upgrades, vehicles, and weapons for doing missions and sidequests in JC2, which are then dropped to your location via helicopter using the money you also earn doing stuff.

I don't see what's wrong with playing a gangster. It depends on how they handle it.

Seems to me you just have a thing against playing as gangsters rather than the gameplay involved.

Yeah, that's what the first Red Faction was. Guerrilla is an open-world, third-person building-demolition simulator.

Saints Row 2, no contest.

It's not the best game ever, far too buggy for that, but it oozes fun out of every crack.

Just Cause 2 is more serious, which combined with the vast worldmap makes it comparatively boring for me. Far better game from a technical perspective though.

Red Faction Guerrilla is quite fun too. Kind of in the middle ground IMHO, but I lost interest somewhere and never finished it, so YMMV. Dat destruction though. Quite neat for a while.

K ignoring for a minute that you should really just open a goddamn book if you're so hopelessly fixated on THE STORY THE STORY THE STORY in everything you play, 90% of sandbox games are aiming for mindless fun first and foremost, so I don't see why setting and story mean jack shit to anyone past how they affect the gameplay, or at least how they're treated like the deciding criteria

Personally I like playing gangsters as the tale of a gangster's fall from grace and also rise to glory are both interesting, the middle ground, as told in stories like The Wire or The Sopranoes, is often amazing as well. Gangster stories are great because they usually often tell more about society as a whole, rather than simply mindlessly killing stuff. Gangster stories almost always give a little insight as to why the gangster chose that way of life to begin with.

I don't understand any hate towards gangster stories at all. It really depends on the use.

But past that, yes, I want to play as an awesome gangsta with a big dicked asian as my partner.

Uh that's your fault. There will be proper marketing for the game down the road. The fact that you wasted a whole 45 seconds of your life watching a gimmick trailer is fairly minor on the scale of injustices. I personally hate the story of Saints Row, the characters, etc.

It's the gameplay that is the draw for me.

Versus a Rockstar game where I generally like the universe and characters they create. But that's a personal opinion.

I just think it's a great atmosphere for the kind of chaotic gameplay that I loooooove in the genre. There are obviously sandbox games with mechanics more unique than shooting, driving, maiming, etc, but they always tend to fall short for me on the whole.

I guess my second vote would go to Red Faction

There are only a few genres where story, characters, and immersion really matter to me. In most other genres "story" is simply extra. One of those is open world games. The other is jrpgs. I actually need to care about the story on some level in those two genres for me to generally finish those games because they tend to be very long with a lot of same-ish style gameplay. But that's my personal bias.

Magus should just play Red Dead Redemption since he likes story and it's one of the only sandbox games that combines an interesting world along with good gameplay and good story.  Maybe Assassin's Creed 2 but it's not that much of a sandbox game.

If he just wants to blow shit up and doesn't care about the story or mind the repetition that comes with the genre he should play RFG or JC2 or Crackdown1.  I don't think any of the GTAs or SRs are what he's looking for.

The stage 2 boss in Mushi Futari Maniac is so aggravating it gave me a nose bleed

Fuck yes, finally I had a half-decent run. Got 365m score in 1.5 Maniac now, which got me #91 on the leaderboard I believe. I can DEFINITELY hit 400m, I died like half way through stage 5 and fucked up a few areas. Kinda pissed me off, but I'm happy that I have a good score now. I'm done for tonight, but starting tomorrow I'm gonna go for 400m pretty hard.

yeah Ive been grinding out the last couple of achievements in Bionic Commando 2. "beat the game on hard" glitched out on me so I have to do another run through. The game only takes an hour to beat if you just swing right through but it still sucks.

I played Lego Batman for about 30 minutes. One of the worst games I've played in awhile. It was just so fucking boring. I thought these Lego games were supposed to be good mindless fun?

Also started playing Sonic Unleashed. It's actually pretty good! Well I went in with zero expectations so that helps. I'll probably beat this.

after darksiders i was thinking of picking a sandbox game but i want to dodge gta4 because i have played rockstar games and they are laaaaaaaaaaaaame

i saw a video of just cause 2 and i'm not really sure i can resist the temptation of a game featuring stuff that explodes,a grappling hook and airplane stealing otherwise i was thinking of either saints row 2 or crackdown?

I've read the ensuing conversation about which OWG you should try; considering that you like Prototype for its mayhem quotient, you should try Saints Row 2, which is mayhem personified.

If you're really jonesing for a meaty story instead, get Red Dead Redemption.

lol, got a new high score in futari (375m) and hit B at the end screen, so it didn't upload to the leaderboards. fuck me. still aiming for 400m though so hopefully I'll beat it before long. :-\

yep, lego games are awful

ehn, they're fun to play with kids or people who don't usually play games and aren't very good at them.

that's the real reason they sell: most kids can do them and they're not intolerable for parents to play.  kind of the 'disney movie' of gaming, if you will.

This.

They aren't made for hardcore types. I think they're fun for what they are. In other words I'd rather play lego games than ever play another edition of dynasty warriors let's say to pull a game at random...

They're essentially a good excuse to relive the nostalgia of whatever particular film based game you are playing with very very very light puzzle solving especially if you are playing with your kids or younger gamers.
