The Ronin are a gang called the Ronin. A ronin is a samurai without a lord. But here's the thing, the Ronin have a leader. THe way I think of it, the Ronin are the incompetent seeds of the Tojo Clan that they kicked out of Japan and into America so they don't fuck things up back home. It's pretty hilarious watching a Japanese gang in the suburbs act like they're samurai. What's more, most of the members of the Ronin are white. Which adds to the funny. The fact that they're in the suburbs and not anywhere near downtown shows their incompetence. Who is hard in the suburbs? No one but the ronin.

And the boss of the Samedi uses a telepathic/voodoo move on you during the boss fight with him.

Until you pointed it out, I'd not made the connection that "The Ronin" actually reported to a boss. That's pretty damned funny.

i'm curious how far you are?

I'm up to mission 21 or something. I still need to replay most of them to get all of the titles, unlock the alternate paths, and collect the equipment so I've got a lot left.

finally started playing Fallout New Vegas.  i was worried i'd get bored quick because i did damn near EVERYTHING in fallout 3 but this game has a totally different pacing.  3 was all open space with most of the interior sections containing nothing but enemies.  i liked the bleak, barren feeling it had but it could get monotonous fast since so much of the game was killing the same monsters and finding the same treasure over and over.  finding a unique treasure or special event was great but there was loads of downtime in between.

new vegas on the other hand is packed with content.  everywhere you turn there are populated locations.  there're quests everywhere and even though many of them are considerably less involved than fo3's it still feels more satisfying because you're always doing something.  going back and forth between each of the factions while trying to stay on their good sides so they don't start hunting you down is fun and more involved than the enclave/brotherhood shit in the last game.  there's also a tighter, more interesting story.  fantastic game

Finished all of the modes in HMH, so I guess I beat it. Hero 30 can get a little boring and repetitive every now and then, but I liked the other modes because they're all short and sweet. I guess now all I have left is replaying Hero 30 missions and collecting titles and equipment and shit.

Moving along a bit in 999. I think I may be getting my first ending soon. The "puzzle rooms" are really really easy, then again that may be because I grew up playing Sierra adventures and Myst back in the day. But its my first experience with a "visual novel" title, now I am interested in trying that Steins;Gate game, is there any news of a translation?

no way is 4 better than 2.

2 had the circus case, which is better than any case in 4. also the last case in 2 > every case in 4. 4 is shit, non stop. I beat every PW game in a matter of days except 4. 4 took me like three weeks, goddamn.

that's because you stopped liking games when 4 came out, you dork

you were in your whole cutting yourself games no longer interest me phase

and you're going to hold the circus case up?  the circus case?  that might actually be the worst case in the entire series.  the last case is an amazing ride, but it's also logically near-impossible to follow.  you have to savescum like hell to make it through because it makes no damn sense at all.

I liked the circus case because it contained one of the only legitimately sympathetic killers in the series. I thought it was unique.

And you're wrong. I played 3 and 4 back to back.

nobody knows but considering that this is being mainly handled by level 5 and that they still have to release layton 4 in america (layton 5 comes right after) i would be surprised if it comes sooner than mid 2012

Played some Death Smiles 2 X-mode over the last couple days. Got an All Clear EX with Follett, with an 8.471 billion score, so I'm happy with that for now. I didn't fight Bloody Jitterbug though. I don't know how to go max meters on the bosses before powering up and killing them with the lockshot. Maybe some day I'll figure it out. But yeah, X-mode is growing on me - at first I liked it more than Arcade mode, then once I understood how to play Arcade mode X-mode was boring in comparison, and now I'm back to enjoying X-mode now that I understand it a little better.

Gonna play Duke Nukem for a while I guess... I dunno, I'm pretty bored with pretty much every non-competitive game. I think after EDF and El Shaddai I'm going to cancel Gamefly and cut way back on them.

On my first playthrough of 999 I got the "safe" ending... now I'm gonna go for the good one, then maybe some of the bad ones. I'm not really concerned about getting all the endings but I do want to play through all the puzzle rooms.

Nice.  Yeah the trick is to make sure you get the safe ending first so at least you only need to play it twice.  Then the length is more bearable.

Been playing Might & Magic and Torchlight on Xbox.

Torchlight was already crazy easy on PC and it seems even more crazy easy on Xbox with the auto targeting. At least with a dude using a gun. I hope they up the difficulty in Torchlight 2.

Might and Magic is cool although a bit repetitive.

Really enjoying Trenched right now. At first I was running around trying to mainly shoot stuff with my mech, and then I was trying to upgrade existing turrets instead of just spawning new ones. Now that I've learned to spawn overlapping fields of fire, the world is my oyster.

Been playing lots of Call of Pripyat since I bought it the other day. I really like what it does with the formula, mainly be expanding the size of the zones and offering more detail to the locations. Also, all equipment is customization, so that's pretty cool.

Finished inFamous and Banjo Kazooie Nuts & Bolts last weekend. I'll write up some final thoughts in their respective threads, but both games were really very impressive.

Trenched is currently my main interest. As usual, I am happy to have given Double Fine some money to keep me laughing and sufficiently challenged in genres where I'm otherwise not usually interested. Personally, I can't stand Tower Defense, though I found "Hero Defense" in Army of Darkness Defense (iOS) to be plenty compelling. Although I will say one of my friends is a hardcore Tower-D fan, and he thinks Trenched is great.

I need to find some other bore-players with whom to tag-team; apparently the most recent players you've co-op'd with are a "Regiment," and provide unlock boosts for each other even when not playing together. Kind of an "ad hoc clan." Pretty slick. I played a game with a random online partner yesterday morning; when I arrived home last night, I had new Regiment Progress unlocks from him. These are just a set of tallies measured across our entire group progress, unlocking stuff for each other. If you play singleplayer only, these tallies are still collected for your "regiment of one," but it's going to be slower progress.

Linkzg: I have Lufia for DS but haven't played it yet...

My friend came over, showed him Child of Eden (he had to play on the mode where you can't get killed because he's horrible at any games that aren't 2D fighting, but he's like a prodigy at 2D fighters...), we also played some Samurai Spirits RPG for Saturn. Some really beautiful 2D spritework on the backgrounds, unfortunately the load times are so slow, especially when going into a battle.

Played some Sanctum today, courtesy of Eel. It's tower defense and won't be confused as anything else, but I really like it [and like the genre in general]. Adding in a FPS element, and multiplayer, shakes the formula up a bit.

The final stage is hard as fuck when you do each stage on rank 3 + the EX stage.

Been playing Espgaluda 1 every once in a while on MAME, and I think that's the next game I'm going to focus on. I just read the wall of text from the shmups strategy forum so I think I should be ready to start playing this. I can already make it the final boss on a good run, so hopefully it won't take a ton of practice. The final boss is pretty hard though... I could see myself reaching her with a full stock of lives and still losing.

i played about 90 minutes of Hydrophobia and i didn't hate it entirely. it's kind of interesting but pretty janky and the gunplay is pretty bad. the thing that stands out about it is the water tech and how the corridors you move through can fill with water and stuff. so when stuff like this happens:

you think "hey that was pretty cool"

but then when an entire place fills with water and you have to swim through it you're reminded of every really bad 3rd person water level in any game from the ps2 era.
