New Super Mario Bros U
Didn't play New Super Mario Bros 2 on the 3DS so can't comment on how it compares, but it's really good. Pretty much the only reason to own a Wii U.

Tekken Tag Tournament 2 Wii U Edition

Didn't play the PS3/360 versions. Been playing mostly online and haven't had any major lag issues at all.

playing through Old World Blues in Fallout New Vegas. Pretty sweet expansion, the humor is hit and miss (I'm quite particular about my jokes) but I've had a few laughs. Mainly when that cunt Dr Mobius just goes on and on about his "robo scorpions"  :lol the talking toaster is pretty sweet too

I cant believe you cant throw grenades back. What kind of misstep is that? All you can do is hope you have enoughcover to slide away from it, or pop out and the AI doesnt get a lock on you (which they will).

I think the underdog rooters need to go re-think this one. Ya'll stoopit. Go root for something better.

the story, which is about the moral complexity and horrors of war, from what i understand.

so it's not like every shooter where you're the righteous good guy fighting for 'Merica (or "Earth" which is actually a whole planet taken over by 'Merica, when fighting against aliens.)

I got Forza Horizon yesterday and been playing through that.

It's pretty damn good. The racing model takes a bit getting used to after NFS but I'm enjoying it. I've set my assists the way I generally do (ABS on, Traction control off, simulation steering). Like always I'm quite fond of driving the Lancer Evo around.

I'm a fan of how it structures its races and events and it's weird because at it's base it's identical to Most Wanted, except better. Most Wanted felt hollow in the SP where Forza is packed with tons of events and a wide variety of challenges.

It also has a cockpit view which automatically makes it a more fun experience.

I'm surprised that no one is really talking about Deponia, since it's basically a modern take on classic 2D Lucasarts adventure games, only with lots of Europeanness. The backgrounds are nicely detail and vibrant with color and personality, clearly there was a bit of money behind this one. The characters animations can be a bit stiff at times, but nothing that would really be out of place in other, similar games. It's also got some fully animated cutscenes scattered around. One of the early puzzles has you using a mousetrap bated with a wasabi pea to catch an escaped toothbrush, which kind of gives you an idea of the kind of silliness you can expect. But it's a kind of silliness that works within the tone and look of the game. Apparently the ending isn't very good, that's the major problem I've heard, and the voice acting can be a bit hit and miss, and some conversations tend to go on for longer than they really need to, and there's some subtitle grammar errors here an there. There's a sequel out, so that might solve the biggest problem. If you want a decent, light-in-tone 2D adventure game, this is that thing.

It's...okay. Hardly great, and some of the characters are a bit annoying, but I wouldn't necessarily call it bad. I mean, it isn't Dead Mountaineer's Hotel.

Beat Mega Man 6 the other day since I wasn't sure if I ever did back in the day... there are a few moments of brilliance (Plant Man's stage with its springs + platforming + enemies everywhere trying to kill you) but some levels feel extremely rushed and simplistic (like Yamato Man), and the Rush Jetpack breaks the game a bit. The final stages are really short and they could have really done more with them (Wily stage 1 was a bit of a bitch, requiring good jetpack mastery)... and most of the castle bosses were a joke. You can tell the team's hearts weren't in this one, apart from the background graphic artists (Plant Man's stage is one of the nicest looking on the NES). Still better than 4.

Also playing Last Story, about to

Why were you bothering to do that? Order the other guy to do it.

The story has several intentionally ambiguous moments but surely the main gist wasn't that hard to follow? I'm guessing that after a bit of the subpar gameplay you couldn't be arsed to pay attention anymore.

I dont think its a well told story. Once they reveal the "twist" (which really you see a mile away) the rest of the game falls completely apart, badly. Replaying it on FUBAR knowing the twist I'm playing these parts like "why is this happening? this technically shouldn't be happening."

Point being - and I will spoiler for those poor souls who haven played this turd:

spoiler (click to show/hide)
The "test" Walker gets. We know this DIDNT HAPPEN AT ALL but you can still get shot up if you fire back, and Lugo and Adams fight with you. WHY? So what else DIDNT HAPPEN yet we had to fight anyway? I can see Walker acting stupid, but why are Lugo and Adams playing along to these apparitions?

For the twist to make sense you do have to assume lugo and other guy silently put up with a looooot of dumb shit. I thought the ending wasn't great, to be honest, but I liked the ride and how grim some of the shit that happened was. I also took a few things as pretty decent criticism of war shooters, which was not something iI expected from the game.

the plot isn't airtight. but since the game is from the perspective of the main dude (lol cant remember his name... walker?) you can chalk it up to "it was all in his head!"

it's not perfect but it works for the most part. and def effective.

does it say anything interesting or is it just saying war is bad and affects people

apparently there's a huge critical analysis paper of it by some game journo.  Calls is a "close reading" of the game...should be pretty terrible in that horribly misguided academic way.

Beat KOTOR 2 today, took me just shy of 30 hours. Overall, I really enjoyed it. Great story, great writing, great characters. You can tell that there were some cut corners here and there, but nothing too bad. The worst offender was the ending, even with all the content put back in with the latest patch it still feels a bit abrupt. Went full Sith by the end, feels good man.

I'm assuming that for GT5 they spent four years designing the menus and one year designing the racing.  I've never seen a game so overproduced yet so undercooked at the same time.

Most EA games from the early-to-mid 2000s had fantastic menus and UI, and craptastic gameplay. Maybe Sony were studying them.

Finished Binary Domain on the highest difficulty. Here's a quick review:

+ Good combat. Being able to target independent body parts makes the combat more interesting than most TPS. Shooting an enemy's head off will turn him against his robros, shooting a leg off will incapacitate them, shooting an arm off will make him drop his weapon, etc.
+ The upgrade system rewards playing well. You earn credits from each enemy you kill, and you get extra credits for getting headshots, destroying more body parts, melee kills, double kills, multi-kills, etc. You spend these credits on nanomachines from the shop that grant bonuses (eg. extra health, faster health regeneration, increased invulnerability when rolling) and upgrades for you and your squad's weapons.
+ They introduce new enemies pretty frequently and mix them together to keep things interesting throughout the game.
+ Good story, characters, voice acting.

- The boss battles. They're fine conceptually, but some of them have at least 3x as much health as they should. I hate bullet sponges more than anything, so fuck em.
- The difficulty levels are pretty lazy. I was hoping No Mercy would have remixed enemy waves (like all good action games), but it looks like they only made some basic adjustments (like how much damage enemies do, how much health they have, maybe increased accuracy, etc.). Disappointing.
- Weapon variety. Your arsenal is pretty basic: assault rifles, sniper rifle, shotgun, rocket launcher, grenades, pistols, etc. I usually didn't see much reason to use anything but the standard Assault Rifle (and a rocket for bosses). It would have been nice to have a few unique weapons, especially since the game takes place in a futuristic setting.

= The trust system. I'm kinda indifferent toward it. Your squad's trust will increase if you're issuing smart orders and they'll ask you questions every once in a while, but as far as I know having high trust doesn't do much besides change the ending.
? There are some multiplayer modes that I haven't played. I think they might be like horde mode or something. shrug

So the game has its flaws, but overall I really enjoyed it. It might not be on the same level as Vanquish mechanically, but I'd still put it above most of the other modern TPS (like Gears, Uncharted, and Mass Effect).

Spec Ops is OK so far.  Shooting parts are so-so but the setting and story are interesting.  There's a funny dissonance between shootin and the storytelling, though.  The subject matter makes it stick out more in this than in most other games.
