Spelunky gets more fun and interesting each time die because it slowly teaches you how to play better, tackle situations different and makes you curious to tackle the game in your own playstyle.

But this is all true in Dark Souls.

The difference is that if you die in Dark Souls, you have to redo some shits that gets more tedious the more often you have to redo it.

How is this different in Spelunky?

guys it takes 6 minute to speedrun spelunky,in 6 minutes of dark souls i haven't even got back to one of the boss after dying, and you are wondering why one game is perceived as frustating and the other is not?

Using the most extreme example of highly honed game skills for your example in one game, and your complete lack of skill in another as a comparison.

Over the course of a walkthrough the same might be true for Dark Souls, but when you're stuck on a boss and have to walk the same way over and over again, it doesn't really teach you anything new and can become tedious. This makes progressing all the more rewarding and isn't neccesarily a bad thing but different from Spelunky where the focus is less on beating certain parts.

why? i guess my comparison was extreme but spelunky is simply faster paced,in the time it takes me to die once in the same friggin spot in dark souls i've died 5 times in completly different spot in spelunky and the end result is that in your deaths it actualy feel you are making progress in spelunky and you are just wasting time in dark souls... you guys are simply lumping games where you die often without considering anything else

And while we're at it, y'all need to stop replying to Magus' inane nonsense as it only produces more.

Because you don't have to redo exactly the same stuff in Spelunky. Many games with auto generated content feel like there is no difference in the levels but Spleunky imo does a great job at mixing stuff up so that the levels feel different and not interchangeable.

No, not just that. You die a lot and learn from those deaths, yeah, but I was actually referring more to the fact that one of the huge draws that both games share is the secrets and nuances that are never explained to the player. That's what I love about both. They both have those "oh wow, I didn't know you could do that" moments.

ANYWAY, whatever.

My personal tinfoil theory is that they were trying to make blockbuster stuff and that's kinda difficult with thief-tier stealth, so they made an action game with stealth trappings with a why not both.gif mentality.

(old post but wanted to respond) Dishonored is most like Dark Messiah, Arkane's previous game, than Thief or Deus Ex or more popular games people compare it to.  But I agree with the sentiment that pure stealth games mostly died out this gen in favor of multiple approaches.  I think that's why people took to Mark of the Ninja.  The actual new Thief game, Teef, sounds like it's going to be a pure stealth game with a lot of leeway if you mess up.

I liked how many games used stealth as a way to even out the inevitable shootout (Crysis, Uncharted 2, Last of Us, Goldeneye, etc).  And the Batman Arkham stealth, where detection could be used as an advantage.

was searching for stuff to do on my phone and ended up finding this

on a face level it's such a simple and stupid game but somehow i can't stop playing, basicaly you have coins, swords, shields and potions icon... each turn you select one icon and try to make a line with as many icon as possible while trying to survive from the monsters represented by skull icons that pop once in a while

- matching coins let you buy upgrade
- matching shields let you reduce the damage from skulls up to your armor value, extra shields get convert into a special upgrade's bar
- matching potion heal you
- swords get matched together with skulls, the more swords you match the more damage you deal

to make thing more complicated killing skulls give you xp and after enough xp you level up and you get to pick between 2 spells or stat ups,the spells are all different and are usualy what set up your grand strategy, for example i once was able to pick up a spell that made it so that only coins spawned for only 1 turn and another which doubled the amount of coin you would get which made for a run where i quickly got tons of item upgrade's...

once in a while super skulls which fuck the board in a special manner also appear, there is a poison skull that turn potion into poisons... a brute skull which uses other skulls as ammo to kick your ass, there is a golden skull that appear and quickly leave the board but gives huge reward if killed a-la metal slime

each time you kill a super skull there is a chance that they will leave a trophy behind, collecting trophies will unlock new classes and a races, each class comes with their unique spell,a pre-selected pool of spells that can be fucked around once you score more trophies with that class,a class perk and a class penality... races are locked to a class until you get more trophies with that class and come with a race bonus and a mortal enemy which is a super skull that is nastier than the usual super skull... for example one of the super skull is a teleport skull that reset the board but the mage mortal enemy is a teleport skull that reset the board in a way that it features a lot of enemies but no sword to damage them,i actualy had this super skull hit me once but i had a spell that turned all coins on the board into swords which quickly turned around the situation and that really amazed me because it's the sort of thing that you would expect from a rogue game and not the sort of game where you just draw lines

if i had a complaint is that trophies seems pretty rare,i've played quite a few games already and only got one (which unlocked the mage)

Slightly obsessed with this. Though I bought it for Steam from GMG for like a buck, wound up buying it from Amazon and just play it too much on my Kindle instead.

Was playing TTT one night with some dopes and wound up playing 10,000,000 on it while waiting for rounds to end. Having a great run going right as respawning for a new round in TTT made things even better!

I didnt care for Dungeon Raid. No goals.

10000000 was better, but once you beat it, that's it.

These two statements are contradicting, but I guess they should have made it..... 3000000000000 instead.

The dev said there was supposed to be more content, but it was never added to iOS maybe?

Finished Spec Ops, saw all three endings.

Game is real nice, I like the fact the fights at the end are hard. Story is good, just a wee bit rushed in places.

I've progressed further in Dark Souls and it's not as boring anymore, but the amount of time it took to get to "not boring" is still bullshit. I'm having a better experience now, but still running up against the same issues I had before. I honestly don't know if it's because I've unlocked the frame rate to 60, but the glitches are so frequent as to seriously impact the game experience. Ghosts getting caught in walls, bosses clipping through pillars, enemies and summoned phantoms being completely unable to use stairs, phantoms disappearing after being hit by a boss and so on. Regardless, I'm dedicated to finishing the game.

The 60FPS mod causes the stair/ladder problem.

Clipping is just a thing that Dark Souls does. Despite what you claimed earlier, you CAN actually use clipping to your advantage and attack through walls, it's just that the wall has to come after the apex of your swing. The same limitation enemies suffer.

Been playing Xenus 2: White Gold. Imagine a janky, russian Fallout3/Far Cry. The RPG elements are light (perks and a bit of automated stat growth) and the shooting sucks. It's a janky mess in general, but it's oddly compelling due to its openness.
The only thing that massively annoys me is that they gate main mission progress with absurd sums of money. The informant wants 10k for a lead? Sure... Let me do some missions for the mafia, be right back... Oh, now I need some ancient tablet translated? That'll be another 10k. Wait, let me get in my helicopter that I've stolen from the mafia and fly to the military island, see if the government has something to do for me. Now do a tri-force hunt for 6 statues across the entire archipelago and what do the owners want? Why, a (small, but potentially lethal) favour and several thousands of cash money of course. Needless to say I just started shooting people. Thankfully the game allows for it.

Star Wars the Force Unleashed

So far it's really mediocre, I can see how some people might enjoy it but its all very very wonky. I don't know if I will bother finishing this if it remains this quality.
First level you just walk around as Darth Vader and send wookies flying, its so basic and boring. Then Vader steals a child and you are his apprentice on a mission. Same silly simple gameplay.

Quit now, this game is fucking stupid. Even on the hardest difficulty, TFU is a spammy, boring, content tourist game with very little going for it. I forced myself to finish it because it's 30gbs on PC and I never wanted a reason to install it again. It still wasn't worth it. Supposedly the sequel is even worse?

Let's hope now that EA has the Star Wars license, we can expect bet--pfft :lol who am I kidding

Another game I've been playing: Hearthstone

The game is fun but unfortunately it is a huge fucking grind. The fun aspect in card games comes from trying out lots of different cards and decks. In Hearthstone you need to play for dozens/hundreds of hours before you can begin to really make a deck of your own. I've been in the beta for a while now and after the initial shine wore off, I've been logging in about once a week or so.

and honestly i think getting a pack every two day is fine but the game is still boring because the mechanics are too simple and the card pool limited and with tons of sucky cards so you have tons of wizards running all of the good board control cards or warlock all running the cheap fast kill drops and the like... blizzard also seems quite happy with the nerf-hammer which i don't really see as a good thing... at least they give you the chance to sell the card back for full price everytime they nerf one

So its not really a beta then, just early access. Just call it what it is then and stop beating around the bush Blizzard.

t had the shop before the last wipe too (I think) so I don't see what the difference is.

Still making my way through Skyrim when I get a chance. Trying to just push through the main quest, but keep getting side tracked. I'd say this game made huge improvements over Oblivion, but I miss custom spells. Destruction magic feels nerfed because of that.

Saw your name on the Daily challenge leaderboard during Patrick's Spelunky stream (Giant Bomb)  :lol

Such a sad score :*(

Skyrim would be cool if the game actually had colors and if you didn't spend hours fighting the same enemies.

Skyrim would be cool if it was like an RPG or an actual TES game instead of bullshit. Every storyline makes you special, and there are like 5 real quest for each faction. Nothing is ever influenced.

Well that sucks you didn't find it enjoyable. I'm okay with everything making you special, the fun to me is being an unstoppable force by the end of the game.

I hate how how you kill dragons and shit and no one knows of you as dragonborn and you still have guards going off about sweet rolls. It's such a weird narrative dissonance.
