Basically all AAA sandbox games are becoming nothing but check the box off collect-a-thons is what I'm getting from this.

And now I'm not really too excited about getting around to playing Arkham City since I've had my fill of that stuff with AC4 and Saints Row 4 just recently.

Ubisoft ones for sure.

I know it's hard to ignore when it's shotgunned all over the minimap, but it can be done. Might make them feel kinda anemic though.

I never saw Batman as a collectathon and why im bored with SRIV is that so far it is a collectathon. GTAV isn't a collectathon. I'm not seeing how all AAA sandbox games are collectathons because Ubisoft is such a shitty developer.

I dind't think of Asylum that way, but they went overboard with the riddler challenges in City. I did all of one, then said fuck it and ignored everything that's non-critical.

That doesn't make Arkham City a collectathon though. Might as well call GTAIII a collectathon because of hidden packages at that point.

Certainly, but they're there to pad the length and make you actually engage with all that geometry. City is not that bad on the whole, there's just too much. I engaged with that stuff in Asylum and liked it a lot, actually. The riddler challenges specifically were actually somewhat meaningful puzzles.
It's just that City had way too many. Which kinda made the open world aspect feel redundant if you ignored them. I get why Bebpo would be reminded of collect-a-thons.

It's Far Cry 3 that is the worst example from what I've played recently. That shit is literally meaningless and the pouches and other leatherware just kind of made the game easier. I liked the towers though...

I'm sure Infamous: Second Son will have a LOT of collectible crap.

Pad the length? I ignored riddler trophies on my run and it lasted like 20 hours. You're using the word "padding" loosely here. They're there for extra and because they're fun. This isn't Mario shitty four where you need x stars to progress. This is a side thing in a game that has 20-25 hours of content and more without even touching a single riddler trophy.

Honestly I prefer City over Asylum. City has content more relevant to my interests.

Seems people are getting confused and forgetting what collectathon means. Saints Row IV and Crackdown are the only sandbox game I can think of where collecting is the main means of progression through the game. THOSE are collectathons.

When Saints Row IV get great? I've played six hours of it and I'm so glad I did not pay full price.

As for farCry3: I played Blood Dragon for about an hour and a half. Yep. Oobi Soft game. I don't see why I ever bother with any game that company makes that isn't Rayman. If you can't tell already that I dislike Ubisoft I dunno wot to say.

I think "padding" can apply to optional content, but I suppose you're right in that it's not quite the same.
I didn't remember how long City was. Went to check on Steam and it turns out I bought it on Gamersgate... But now I've got the regular AND GOTY version on Steam as well. WB doing it right. :leon

The data clusters? I couldn't help myself collecting those... Even though I knew that I had limited time because I played it during the free weekend.

I noticed this shitty thread getting new posts all day and came in here to complain about the nature of catch-all threads taking away from what might otherwise be cool discussion...

...then I discovered it's a fucking Batman/AC slap fight.

I take back everything awful I've ever said about catch-all threads, they're clearly necessary to quarantine shit like this.

Nah. I still hate catch-all threads for trying to talk about anything. You end up with a cacophony of people talking past each other in 5 different conversations usually, or long, page stretching quotes. Fuck that.

But, like I said, to quarantine the dumb, it's great!

Catch alls catch all the feels. Having both a what are you playing and a random gaming talk seems redundant sometimes, but whatever, at least catch alls funnel enough posts to keep a thread active

Random Gaming thread isn't really Random Gaming Talk. It should really be renamed Random Gaming NEWS. Because not every news bit deserves a thread, because we're not gaf and that's what the thread usually is anyways.

Those are all pretty much single topic threads though. I don't really view them as "catch-alls" as much as the random talk thread and this thing.

If I want to talk about a random topic, I only want to talk about THAT random topic. I don't want to lose a conversation thread because someone else went off on a tangent and everybody spent a day trolling each other. With games, if I want to talk about a game I'm playing, I want to talk about THAT GAME.

But, whatever Diff'rent strokes n shit.

This thread is just a chat room about games. Except here the conversations are started by someone throwing out thier thoughts about a game. If someone or whatever what's to respond to someone's thoughts on the game. Then fine they do and the conversation will naturally end itself. If you don't care about what a few posters are saying or think its dumb, just ignore it. It's not hard. Better then sitting here and complaining about it.

It's a small fourm. This and the random thought are mostly the same sure. But this thread is better then 50 4 posts threads based on my thoughts on playing so and so. Just like random game thread is with news and whatnot.

Went to some guy's house in the Hamptons today and he had one of the most amazing private collections of arcades I have ever seen... the whole top floor of his office has about 100 arcades (with more downstairs but currently not set up), all with one of those trippy 80's-90's purple carpets with planets on them and stuff. Really felt like stepping back in time... plenty of games I have never heard of, and one game (Super Bagman) that is apparently extremely rare. I played stuff that I've never heard of before like Vanguard (one of the first SNK games... sounds like the company I have my retirement account with :P), Major Havoc, Quantum, Mad Planets (with one of the most wacky control schemes I ever saw), Kangaroo, Black Widow (Geometry Wars before Geometry Wars)... Also played a lot of the old standbys like Marble Madness, Silent Scope, Q*bert, NFL Blitz...

Here's a video my friend Nick took of the place:

Fuck Treetops.  Seriously fuck, fuck, fuck it.  It's Guacamelee trying to do a Super Meat Boy section without the controls being perfectly tight and precise enough to pull it off so it's just frustrating.  I got to the end part with the gears and just gave up after a while.  That and like one other optional platforming part are reaaaaally tedious.

Otherwise the game is great stuff, but I always thought the action was far better done then the platforming in the game because the platforming just wasn't 'that' tight.  It was pretty good, but it just felt slightly off to me, which got frustrating at times when they pushed the limits.

Played a whole mess of GTA V this weekend, after having been away from it for nearly two weeks. For the first time, I had a great time in Free Mode. I'm not sure what clicked for me, but it worked. Maybe it was having incompetent griefers trying to ruin my day, and repeatedly shooting them in their badass trans-am. Maybe it was being challenged to a one-on-one deathmatch, and almost shutting out the guy. Maybe it's that the $2B is gone from my account, so it's meaningful when I make a quick $20K in stolen cars.

Not that it all went well for me. Tanks are very overpowered in the game, and I was unable to take out one with rockets from a Buzzard chopper, as well as three direct hits from a rocket launcher in another session. I also had a hard time on the Concrete map when it was at its 16-player max. Utter chaos!

WSoP: I finally won my first Standard Tournament. It is nice to feel like I might not be a complete incompetent at poker these days!

MtG 2012: I thought I would play through some of this so I could delete it for space on my HDD. Turns out grinding to get 100% deck completion is pretty unexciting.

Got it now. I'm not sure if the controls really are to blame. I sometimes accidentally do the uppercut instead of the derp derp move but that's probably more due to the loose d-pad of my controller. Too me, the use of a double jump + special move + dimension switch and change of direction mid air was just a bit much and I got really impatient when I failed that a couple of times in a row. My success to failure rate improved after I gave myself a couple of hours to reset.

Also, the last part with the chainsaws is easiert part of that sequence, you should return to it. You only need dimension switch and the goat fly move, so it's much easier to coordinate. Most of the time you just can  dimension switch and fly at the same time and you'll land savely.

i've been dicking even more with retro achievements some more and got to over >2000 and this is what i got so far

Megaman 3 - not as good as 2, lot of weapons that just shoot straights, music is not as cool, easier (i guess that also means less frustating) to boot, top man is stupid

Castlevania - i always had an hard time playing this, the control are sooooooo awfull, even without mentioning the fact that you can't change your jump direction mid-air, swinging your whip takes forever and it's not uncommon to be hit by the very enemy you are trying to hit, everytime i tried playing this i always got stuck at the stage 3 but this time i decided to soldier on FOR THE GAMERSCORE and somehow reached stage 5...

...then the game crashed :beli

1942 - i tought playing a score-based shooter made from capcom would be fun with achievements involved but this is so fucking boring, i know this was an arcade port but even the original looks boring

Super Mario World - still the best super mario game, for me it's all the secret entrance that really make it good, some of them are just so well hidden like the one that's actualy behind another exit which you have to dodge by flying below it or the one in the ghost house where the game trick you by having 2 rooms that look the same but are actualy different, some of the later stages are also harder than what i remember and of course the music is so catchy

FINALLY playing Dark Souls after not having the time to actually sit down and play a game for about 2 years.

And seeing how limited (or rather sporadic) my free time is nowadays I think I might get myself a 2DS just so that I can play on the go or while waiting for someone to get back to me on a work related task via email.

Mega man 3 has better music, is harder, and is better than Mega man 2. I like 2 more tho.

There is also an awkward momentum to the controls in Megaman 1 and 2 that was removed (read: fixed) in 3 and onwards. So generally I prefer to play 3 than 2 almost for that alone.

The slide alone makes 3 better than 2. It completely transforms boss fights and makes them far more palpable and interesting to fight since you have more options.

Yakuza 3 / 4 / 5 demo ( :'().  These game might be repetitive on their own but felt so fresh and enjoyable as something different from most modern games (as if games from 5/4 years ago are modern)

Yakuza 3
first off, why is the battle camera stuck on Kazuma's ass? every other game in the series gives you a wider view of the battle without having to manage the camera.  anyway, the orphanage stuff was surprisingly entertaining but I can see how new players might be turned off.  It was one part seeing Kazuma in a peaceful situation and knowing that shit will start happening soon enough.  It does a decent enough job with the prologue telling you that shit will happen and it's all connected before you spend hours dealing with the kids.  The only bummer is that it all felt a bit too saccharine and I was hoping it would be more kindergarten cop or GTO with Kazuma treating the orphanage like the mafia.  really not much to say about the actual game since it's more Yakuza 2.  uh, QTEs are obnoxious and have no rhythm.  the story is nuts and on its own didn't seem to matter, but parts of it continue into yakuza 4 (in some weird ways).

Yakuza 4
the battle camera is pulled back! the leveling up system is changed for the better! playing this new Akiyama dude...yakuza 4 felt like it took longer to have its hook than yakuza 3.  first few hours were about a new character, dealing with other new characters, dealing with a mysterious new woman character, etc.  there's a cutscene linking some events to the tojo clan but most of it is intrigue about Arai or Lily or Akiyama himself.  thumbs up for making a cross dressing bar integral to the storyline? things eventually come together (not really, the story is confusing) with the other characters.  I liked how each character had their own section, perspective, and unique fighting style.  And they did a great job making each fighting style feel different.  Akiyama and Tanimura are both too cool for school characters and that can be annoying.  And talking more about the characters and story will get into spoilers, so
spoiler (click to show/hide)
Akiyama's section ends by introducing another intrigue thread with Majima, then you immediately cut to Saejima's section.  Saejima is voiced by the same guy who voices Takamura in Hajime no Ippo, so I liked him.  His fighting style takes some time to get used to with all the charging but when you do he might be the strongest in the game.  Hamazaki (who was arrested for stabbing kazuma?) makes you do a weird fetch quest, you escape prison, there's a weird bit with Haruka, fight Kazuma, you go to Kamurocho, stuff happens, you fight Majima.  So, a dude cuts out Majima's eye and what? eventually he's let go and Majima never takes revenge? we've seen Majima through three games by now and he's more than a little unhinged.  The game does this a lot.  Scenes start or end abruptly and don't make sense.  Now you're with Tanimura and his broken L1 counter.  The plot seems to be coming together at this point.  You (think you) learn about all the big bad guys.  Tanimura's section ends with an old guy inexplicably killing himself instead of like testifying against Munakata or running away or something.

Finally, you play as Kazuma!! why? what's his role in this game? he's an outsider in this story.  jumping ahead, his final boss is Daigo, and the conversation goes something like--

Kazuma:  Daigo, I'll punch some sense into you.
Daigo: Kazuma, I appreciate the opportunity to fight again.
Kazuma: STRIP!

jumping back.  somehow Hamazaki is alive.  Kazuma and Yasuko go to Kamurocho.  Date is tending to New Serena (so they can avoid answering whether or not Date married the owner?).  Kazuma sees Majima getting arrested (???).  Kazuma kicks Tanimura and Akiyama around (awesome).  Everyone meets up top of Kamurocho Hills and Kido is a double spy or something.  Saejima smacks Katsuragi around but leaves this gun next to him and Yasuko get shot.  Oh, and rubber bullets so Saejima isn't a killer wtf.

The final section has all four characters meet up.  There's only a single side mission of interaction involving a baby.  Everyone marches towards millennium tower and shit happens.  Akiyama vs Arai? makes sense.  Tanimura vs Munakata? makes sense.  Kazuma vs Daigo? uh.  Saejima vs Kido? why.  Everyone wins.  They leave a gun next to the bad guy, he shoots Akiyama in the fat stacks.  they still leave the gun next to the bad guy and he does himself in.  I don't know.  In the epilogue Date is back with the police, Saejima is given his own mafia family, Majima is out of jail, and it feels like it's implied that Kazuma would come back to the Tojo.

I really enjoyed it.  I think Kazuma's section should've been restricted to Okinawa.  Majima should've been saved for Saejima's last boss.  Story could've been simplified where Arai defects to Tojo and takes it upon himself to save the clan.

Yakuza 5 demo
Assumptions based on the trailer.  If anyone played it, feel free to provide semi-spoilery answers because I don't think this game is ever coming out here.  About the gameplay, it largely still more of the same, now with quicker transitions into battle.  And Virtua Fighter in the arcades  :omg
spoiler (click to show/hide)
-Kazuma is a taxi driver in Osaka (looks like it's the same bridge from 2)? he's not part of Tojo or the orphanage?
-Haruka is an idol on TV and people were talking shit about her at the restaurant?
-Saejima shaved his head and is still in jail? uh

RGG5 isn't terrible, but isn't anything new. The cutscenes are LOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOONG.

I sure did.

It probably still is a dumb business move, but hey, the miniscule fanbase would be thrilled.

As long as they buy it. At full price. And not just bitch and moan and refuse to buy it for some stupid ass reason.

And if they are going to localize RGG5, I can't see Ishin coming until after 5 is finished and released.

yeah, yakuza 5 is one of the only games I'd buy at full price if it came out at retail.  that and drakengard 3, which is only sold on the square enix website or something like that.  I enjoy the yakuza games enough that more of the same is still entertaining.  If anything I wish they'd pull away from Kazuma and Tojo.  how can the same shit happen to the same guy five times?

I beat Tearaway the other day... got all the trophies except no-miss clears on "Between The Pages" and "The Tear". Didn't want to deal with the imprecise platforming crossed with long levels... The game did have a really awesome and clever ending. Even though the core 3D platforming mechanic was beguiled with problems, and the game was the definition of 'gimmicky', it's full of charm and definitely original; 2 things that do count for a lot for me.

I don't believe Drakengard 3 is being sold at Gamestop. Nothing has indicated it would be. All the videos say otherwise. I'll get it, but I do believe the game looks pretty bad.

I'd also buy Yakuza 5 in English. I already have the Japanese release, but obviously it would be easier to play in English.

so funnily enough I've been playing more or less nothing but Dead Island. Its actually a really great game. It's janky, highly derivative and humourless, but it's very satisfying to play and brings a few new ideas to the games it's based on.

What?

Is it the fact that I'd buy a game that I think looks bad? I'm not going to miss a Drakengard game. I love the first two games.

Is it the fact that I said the game looks bad, because well it does. From the stupid look character to the bad graphics that can't even run well. The entire game sounds questionable.

Civ 5 is so crazy. 4 hours gone like it's nothing. Compared with sometthing like Crysis where I have to force myself to play for more than 30 minutes (and I kinda like Crysis).
