you're playing Tony Hawk 3 in 2014 :lawd I think I'm in love. I wish my PS2 was near a router so we could play online, the servers are still up.

I miss that series so much. And no, THPSHD is not consolation.

I'm playing: MEGA MAN LEGENDS 2

Overview:
Mega Man Legends 2 was released exclusively for the PS1 in 2000 and is sequel to 1997's Mega Man Legends (98 in US). For those who aren't familiar with the series, it's completely different to the classic Mega Man games you might be used to. It's a story-focused 3D action game with most of the gameplay taking place underground in ruins, dungeons left behind by a mysterious civilization and crawling with enemies called Reaverbots. Though the primary gameplay focus is to explore dungeons and collect the special quest item, there are plenty of enemies and bosses to challenge you before you can move forward with the story. Beating enemies yields money (colored gems called Zenny) to collect and the player can spend their Zenny to buy upgrades for your character and parts that can later be assembled into new items and weapons. There's a large world to explore with plenty of towns to interact with and dungeons to blast your way through. With all the varied locations it's not surprising that there's quite a bit of content to go through with HowLongtoBeat clocking the game at around 7 hours for just the story and about 15 hours including all side quests and other objectives. It's often considered a classic and there's been quite a fandom built up over the years so it's one of the better-known games released for the PS1.

How Is It?
Well, I usually only play for a couple of hours before posting impressions, but so far it's incredibly fun. Truth be told, this is actually the first time I've put some serious time into the game so I'm really enjoying the sequel since it about improves on everything from the original game. The story starts off immediately with a long exposition explaining the central plot points and providing you with the game's big mystery to unravel. Without spoiling it, the story features Roll (the same one from the 2D games) and Mega Man (now a boy with amnesia about his past) exploring the world trying to discover the mystery behind the disappearance of Roll's parents and to located the Mother Lode, a mysterious treasure with unlimited energy. The player controls Mega Man throughout the entire adventure but is always accompanied by Roll and Data, Mega Man's dancing robotic monkey (and save point).

Although the game starts off slowly the player is given plenty of time to acclimate to the controls with small tasks and is given the freedom to explore a small town before jumping headfirst into the game's first dungeon. Speaking of controls, they've been improved can easily be played like a modern third person shooter with all relevant controls placed on the four shoulder buttons and the two sticks handling movement, turning, and strafing reasonably well. Although I'm not too far into the game, I had a lot of fun running around the first few dungeons and the story did a decent enough job to keep me intrigued as to what happens next. Combat is relatively simple but there are quite a few enemies that can catch you by surprise and quickly overwhelm you if you aren't paying attention. Although the dungeons aren't randomly generated the layouts are simplistic and typically follow the hallway -> room system with little vertical variation so the gameplay can feel pretty repetitive early on. Fortunately, unlike the first MML, there are varied locations the player can explore so dungeons aren't your usual metal hallways and empty rooms.

The upgrade system returns from the first game but features plenty of more options making the game feel more like full-fledged action adventure game with plenty of options to customize your character. These upgrades include the typical items such as Armor, Helmet, and Shoe upgrades but there are also Buster Parts which improve the main weapon's statistics. Adding Buster Parts (up to three) can be best compared to slotting gems on a weapon in your typical RPG. Each Buster Part improves certain stats (such as range, power, etc.) and finding the right combination that suits your play style is the key to combating enemies effectively. In addition the player can buy/find the more expensive Special Items that provide permanent benefits such as protection from electrical damage or improving the size of the player's life bar. Lastly there are also a lot of different junk items to find in the world which can be taken to Roll to be turned into useful items. Examples include finding the old hover jets and rollerboard in order to make Jet Skates, an equipable item that allows Mega Man to quickly dash around the environment by holding O. There are plenty of items and parts to find in the game and trying them all out is fun in of itself.

To wrap things up, I'm really enjoying playing the game and I think I'll stick with it. Although the story, gameplay, and mechanics really aren't that special on their own but when combined it helps turn MML2 into feeling like a complete package with a lot of depth. The game overall is really simple to get into and the challenge is light to moderate so it's an easy recommendation for most people. Surprisingly I found the game to hold up really well but I think that's mainly due to not many other titles released since then have tackled incorporating the same mechanics without delving too deep into the realm of complexity or wrapping the gameplay in a convoluted plot. Mega Man Legends 2 is a fun yet simple experience that incorporates fun action reminiscent of classic Mega Man titles with an added layer of character that's not typically found in the franchise. If you can find it and love action adventure games then I strongly recommend giving it a shot.

How Can I Play It?
Sadly, the game was never ported to any platform besides the PS1 in the US and due to unknown issues; Capcom has had trouble releasing it for PSN. The only way to legitimately play it is to pick up a used copy off ebay or elsewhere and play it on the PS1, PS2, or PS3. Prices vary for the game but you can often find it as cheap as $20 for only the disc or even as high as $80 for a complete version (manual, back art, and case). If you want to pick it up new then be prepared to spend anywhere in the range of $400. It's not a rare game but due to the fandom it can fetch quite a bit these days.

Additional Impressions:

BORE REQUEST: If anyone has the original Mega Man Legends for the PS1 or Mega Man 64 for the N64 and is feeling generous please let me know!

MEGA MAN LEGENDS :rejoice I actually kinda like MML1 better than the sequel. The lack of lock-on makes it a little more intense in combat and I'm not a big fan of how extremely anime-inspired the storytelling got in MML2. It's definitely way better with regards to production value in sound/graphics/etc., I just like the proof-of-concept vibe of the first game more I guess.

I'd agree with you that MML1 is definitely the bigger innovator but I just find everything to be better in the sequel. But I see where you're coming from, there isn't enough of a big jump to set MML2 apart from the first game. It just feels like a natural continuation with a bigger budget. That's what I think of it so far anyways. I've only played a few hours so I don't know how the full game compares.

I'm pretty happy with how the MML2 post turned out. Granted, I haven't done any game reviews/impressions in quite a while so it's probably shit but I want to keep moving forward with this. I'm on a real N64 binge lately so when I get the time I'll setup a proper thread and do one game impression per day for a week to see how it goes.

nah that's pretty much it for the rest of the game. I still love it, but what they showed of Mega Man Legends 3 looked like much more of a leap in mechanics; adding vehicles, wall-running, robust melee combat, etc.

pretty sure there's some copyright snafu involving one of the voice actors in the English cast being a convicted pedophile that's preventing Capcom from rereleasing the Legends games at all, on any platform. I've been waiting for them to come to PSN for ages.

i love both megaman legends game but everytime i try to replay 2 i always stop midway through... why? because there is a lot of chorish sections like this underwater dungeon where you move three times as slow as normaly, once again reinforcing the stereotype that water and videogames don't mix

and this horrible horrible horrible sidequest where you have to answer 100 questions of general culture

who fucking cares about george michael album's,britain 3C policy, the crimean war and thai soups, i just want to blow up stuff

that said the best megaman legend game is clearly this one

can you say most japanese, japanese game ever?

Up to mission 5 in Wonderful 101. Just when I was beginning to get the game, it started to throw me for some curve balls. Switching between attacks with the right stick/touchscreen is horribly inaccurate... I don't know if I'm gonna get a whip, a bow, a claw... what. And the game seems to not obey its own internal rules... so sometimes turning into a weight to block an attack will work, but another time it won't work against the same attack. The game feels really messy, and between this and MGS:R I'm not sure if I can say a Platinum title is an insta-buy anymore. They better not fuck up Bayo 2.

Played PvZ: Garden Warfare, still loving it. Even got me to go back to the 99¢ copy of original PvZ and, god help me, I've been enjoying it. It's pretty simple, and there appear to be some cheap tricks to allow for easy wins, but I'm still having trouble with the Invisi-Ghoul mini-game. I'm looking forward to 200/200 and deleting it.

Nothing but Pocket Trains! I dont really have the right to be part of this community anymore
I kinda felt like that when I was, er, researching F2P stuff nearly to the exclusion of other games. :lol

Of course, now that I've admitted to playing and enjoying the original PvZ, I'll probably still have to turn in my membership card.

well to be fair I did play Magic the Gathering IRL for like 8 hours yesterday so that is probably enough requisite HARDCORE ACTUAL GAMEZZ to do me over for awhile. I'm going to play some Hitman tonight I think.

Lost Kingdoms 2
I remember loving the first game, but this plays like crap. So long as you have creatures fighting each other it's fine, but the cards that are direct attacks are shitt, mainly due to the lack of lock on targeting, causing you to waste a lot of cards. It doesn't help that you can get stunlocked and hit by enemy attacks that look like they weren't even close to connecting. A simple dodge roll would have helped a lot. I got a couple levels deep into the third region of the continent before finally giving up.

Castlevania: The Dracula X Chronicles
Some minor changes to enemy placements, but otherwise this seems like a pretty faithful remake. Maybe it's just an illusion, but it feels a bit slower than the original. I unlocked both Rondo and Symphony (save states make that a lot easier/faster) and the versions they included here seem competent.
I never saved all the maidens in Rondo, maybe I'll do it in this, even though I don't like action-vania as much.

Jeanne D'Arc
This was pretty good until the point they took away Jeanne and replaced her with her useless friend. I should have expected this and not neglected to level her, but I could deal with this liability well enough until a very difficult battle (Paris gates), where I couldn't make it work no matter what. I don't like this enough to grind, so I deleted it.
Fun aside: There's a French bulldog beast warrior name Rufus with an unfortunate speech impediment. He swings a giant axe with shit accuracy, but he's apparently a good character if you level him up far enough. :obama

Terraria
I can't deal with the perspective. Building in 2D feels like shit. The menus are mildly infuriating as well (transparency, on top of busy sprites? Fuck you), but at least you don't have to go outside the game to figure out how to make things.

McPixel
Find and defuse the bomb Wario Ware style with the tried and true adventure game mechanic: rub everything together and hope for the best. I didn't find it very funny, but I guess it's impressive how commited they were? I dunno, not my thing. :dayum

I kinda enjoyed Terraria for its 16-bit/retro look. It's become a bit grindy with later patches, though, and people on the official boards are pushing it toward a grind/loot-fest like the Diablo series. No thanks.

Terraria is much more of an action/adventure like Castlevania or something than Minecraft, where building is the main draw and focus of the game.

It's pretty much all I've played on Xbox over the past couple of weeks :spin

And yeah, since the 1.2 update hit consoles, its even more of a motherfucking loot and farm-athon, not that I have a problem with that :spin

I've only played it on the PC. I know it's supposed to be more action-oriented than Minecraft, of course, but the good weapons and stuff have become a little too grindy for me with recent patches. It's becoming more and more like Diablo - I mean, the spergs on the official forum have the developers' ears and I don't think it has turned out well. People shouldn't be complaining about mage/ranger/melee "builds" when it just takes 30 seconds to change equipment and voila, you're another build. This isn't Diablo where you (used) to have to commit tons of hours to one specific build and never look back. I dunno...it just seems to mesh poorly with the creation aspect of the game. There really should be a Creative mode in Terraria. I have far more interest in the exploration/mining/building aspect of the game than I do in the faux-Blizzard-style gameplay. It's a goddamn pain in the ass to be building stuff and have to constantly fight off enemies.

Did you play it much before 1.2 dropped? It was released on the PC way before consoles got it. The boss/hardmode progression used to be very non-linear - you could kill almost all the hardmode bosses in any order, and you could get the highest-tier ore/weapons/armor in a very short period. In other words, you had almost total freedom to dictate your own gaming experience. Now it's been tightened up - the bosses have to be killed in a specific order, and ore has to be gotten in a linear fashion in hardmode now too (each higher tier ore now requires a pickaxe from the previous ore). It's really changed the game in to a very linear one. No more charting your own course.

I played a good amount before 1.2 and had only just reached hardmode, I killed all the pre-hardmode bosses in any order I think? I dunno, but yeah the mining did require me to build up your gear as you climb the ore tiers.

I dunno, I'm generally a pretty ocd gamer so I dont mind being forced into a set progression path, although I can see how some could see it as a negative. Still a great game and I'm going to be playing it for a long time now that added literally 1000 new items

You might try jumping to the PC version. $10 on Steam and is on sale pretty often. They released another patch for it earlier this month that adds stuff like fishing and a ton of new potions.

I guess if I had just discovered the game recently I wouldn't mind the linearity either. I just miss being able to pick my own path in the game like it used to be. Still a fantastic game, though. Exploding bullets + boomstick/shotgun = good times.

Uguu game. I'm picking up a lot of trash and cleaning stains, but I think I'm slowly making progress. Currently being foisted by a blue chick that blocks the path to the roof and egg-based army men that shoot me to shit in the foyer. The battery mechanic is annoying right now, considering my 'session' each day and night is already limited to 15 minutes, but I'm slowly getting upgrades to my battery, so I imagine it will get better.

Gravity Rush was really good. Combat was kind of wonky, but there was a certain charm to it. It didn't feel automated like a lot of games so there's that. It's like the best game on the Vita.

Speaking of Vita. I don't understand the notion that it's some great jrpg machine. It is'nt. Just because you have a port of PS2 game dosen't make you a jrpg machine.

Theres plenty of JRPGs on Vita. Not ones I'd want to play, though.

Is there? Even with counting crappy NIS/animu stuff there dosen't seem to be this huge ammount of jrpgs. It's about quality though right?

I mean I'm just going to list stuff from Gamestop's rpg section:

Mind Zero
Tales of Hearts R
Persona 4 Golden
Final Fantasy X HD
Conception 2
Soul Sacrifice-I guess?
Murasamma-Ok?
Hyperdimension Neptunia Re;Birth1
Demon Gaze
Ragnarok Odyssey ACE-Are MH games rpgs?
Ys
Disgaea 4: A Promise Revisited
Disgaea 3: Absence of Detention
Valhalla Knights 3-I guess, but who buys VK games?
Natural Doctrine

And there's some other Tales ports and Atilier games.

It's that huge of a list and it's also not very compelling (well IMO) anyway. The 3DS (sadly) seems to have more and is far more compelling. I mean this notion hit me when I was watching Polygon's(whatever) Friends List thing about JRPGS and the girl on there(who probably is'nt one of those moe mouthbreathers) claimed the Vita was the jrpg system and I just couldn't help but ask how?

Tony Hawk was my shit back in the day. Would love a nice, new game in the traditional THPS formula.

So would Tony, apparently.  But Activision basically told him he's on his own for budgeting/producing/marketing any games, and if they like it, they'll publish it with no support.  They've said no to every classic pitch he's made for years.  Dude needs to get out of his contract with them and find a new home.
Has Activision cared about anything except for Call of Duty, Skylanders, and whatever Blizzard is doing?

They care about Destiny and you better care because if you don't they will gut the heck out of Bungie.

Since when did Activision buy Bungie? I thought they were just publishing Destiny. ???

They didn't buy Bungie.  I'm just joking, but if this game bombs I'm sure that can't be good for Bungie. Also there's been all this talk about thier contract and how rough it is.

I've finally got back to playing Wind Waker HD, and past the point where I quit the GC game (right before the Wind/Earther dungeons), and... I can't believe how gutted they feel. I've accepted the fact there are no other fleshed out elemental dungeons, but these two feel like after-thoughts. I'm also aware of the reasoning behind their state, but I still find it jarring how incomplete and unsatisfying they feel.

Speaking of Zelad, I got to the 2nd world in Lttp2, I think I'm just not a Zelda fan anymore (and haven't been since I was like 13).  I still really enjoy Zelda dungeons, but everything between them just feels like work and I'd rather just walkthrough the overworld stuff so I can get to the next dungeon as fast as possible.

The dungeons are fun but I'm siding with the people who say non-linearity made them too simple since they can only assume you have 1 item vs dungeons in normal zelda games that get more complex in their puzzles as you progress and have more items to make creative puzzles out of.  Also the whole "go through the first half of the dungeon, find the items, now access new areas for the 2nd half" thing was probably one of the best parts of the zelda formulaic formula, so I'm not sure why they felt like removing it.  And what do you get for all this?  The ability to pick a dungeon?  Whoopie.  Like this still isn't some free-form oblivion sandbox game where you go around and do mini-stories across the world.  It just turns it into Megaman with an overworld instead of a dungeon select screen.

But yeah, dungeons are still good despite that and graphics/music are ace and the overworld filler between dungeons is thankfully short unlike the tedious hours between dungeons in the last few console Zeldas, so I like the game.  Just don't love it and the changes to the formula don't really improve it and only remove good parts for me.

Also started playing the 2nd half of Broken Sword 5 and it's enjoyable.  Game really needs the animations to move about 2-3x speed, but otherwise it's Indiana Jones as a more boring guy and a French lady.

Plus getting near done Super Robot Wars Z3-1.  Been playing it for around 100 hours at this point since mid-April.  But at the last handful of stages.  It's a solid game but it's the first half of Z3 so it's mainly just a lot of setting up, some filler, and only gets real good in the last 20 hours.  Should finish it just in time for the next time-grind import game...Persona Q!  Which hopefully will be the first Etrian Odyssey game I actually finish.

been playing more of that through the ages boardgame and it's really really good, especialy when played in 3P, in one game me and another player got most of the point generating cards but the other player also got napoleon, napoleon is a huge jerk which give you an HUGE boost to your military score which translate into lot of points stolen from the player that sucks at military, that player was me so in a huff i had to put an army as best as i could while ignoring everything else, now the player with napoleon used a card to declare war on me but just as the war resolved (it takes a turn to give a chance to the defending player to increase his military strenght) the era changed to age 4 and you see, when there is an era change all the card's that are of 2 era below disappear into void, that also include napoleon so what should have resulted in a huge loss for me, just ended in a tie :lol

so now i was ahead in point and dodged the thing that could have fucked me up the most, but while we were busy playing war at each other, player 3 invented movie's (the card that give you the most and then got the elvis presley card which double's the point you get from movie

he got so many point he actualy caught up with me even though he was dead last before

Wind Waker is really great and has a wonderful art style but is very very blatantly unfinished. :-[
