How far along is this season? I don't want to check wikipedia for fear of spoilers. I've got four episodes left in Season 2 and checked one damned thing in wiki, only to get a spoiler on Doakes.  :maf
:( I've learned to stay off Wiki after having 3 separate character deaths spoiled while looking at the episode list of The Wire. But S4 is only 4 episodes in, so you'll probably have a nice amount of padding before you have to wait for weekly episodes.

Copy/pasting my GAF post since I'm too lazy to be original

Sometimes I think the writers intentionally make all the side characters boring and shitty just for Dexter's deadpan sarcasm in their exchanges. It's so painfully clear that he doesn't give a fuck what's going on with any of those distinguished mentally-challenged fellows (Quinn last week, Angel/LaGuerta and Deb last night), and seeing him echo the audience's sentiment of apathy (and almost antipathy at moments) towards those characters is almost worth the torture of all their tedious and banal horseshit.

Anyway, I'm really glad we finally got to see Dexter savor a kill this season. And was I the only one that almost died when he was like, "What is it with you and rape? No one's getting raped!"

... did anyone not want Dexter to kill the hot lady cop? She was so fine.

Dude, the show is about a serial killer, he kills a person on almost a weekly basis. This chick had no bearing on the main story arc or anything, she was just another kill.

Optimo, my brother and I were dying for ten minutes after that. When Dexter is in full-on asshole mode ("They said that stain would come out!"), he's pretty hysterical.

Yeah, Hall was in top form in the scenes with the cop.

It also helped that this was the first time we really got to see the monster this season, and it made the dichotomy with his "normal" persona all the more startling.

Oh yeah, and I already said this on GAF as well, but I'm inclined to think that it was the Vacation Killers that did in Lundy. Trinity's earlier encounter with Lundy had red herring written all over it. I won't be surprised if I'm wrong, though

I think..

..it was trinity making it look like the vacation murderers because fbi dude looked like he realized whoever was shooting him.  if true, the next episodes are going to show laguerta and dexter fighting over who they believe did it all, ending with a season finale where both the vacation murderers and trinity all get killed together or something.  This all depends on whether or not Debra died though.

Ah, OK, OK. I didn't realize it was about a weekly "incidental" killing; when you mentioned police officer, I assumed it was a central character.

Cross-posting from GAF for the bump:

spoiler (click to show/hide)
I don't know if I've enjoyed a season this much since the 1st, even despite all the dull and exasperating elements (Rita being a paranoid bitch, Deb going to pieces, gag-inducing office romance) being as prevalent as ever. Man was that whole office scene fucking intense. That single 8 minute sequence left me jizzing at the prospect of their future encounters.

Now for the nitpicking. Seeing as the writers were alluding to Trinity as Dexter's antithetical equal, I guess the family man reveal isn't all that surprising. However, it's a little too coincidental that out of all the cities he frequents, it just happens to be Miami that is his "home" -- this is assuming, of course, that they don't give him multiple families, which would be equally unbelievable. They're really testing the audience's suspense of disbelief here.

Whatever, I'm still looking forward to next week

I just finished Season 2 yesterday. What a fantastic ending. I really like it when one of these long-arc shows does the right thing by its fans and actually closes on a reasonable note. I bet the writers are as happy about it as the producers and ex-prods are unhappy about not having a hook set in the lip of the audience.

I still want someone to pimp slap LaGuerta; god what a self-righteous, melodramatic bitch. More Deb. Deb rocks. And she digs older guys. :wigglingeyebrows

But overall it is neat to see them acknowledging Dexter's evolution and possible normalization. It's atypical of psychopaths to have deep, meaningful relationships with others, which is what they've implied with Season 2. In Season 1 it was more like everyone around him was part of the disguise he wore to keep himself safe, all part of Rule #1: Don't get caught. I wonder where they'll take this more human Dexter.
spoiler (click to show/hide)
I also think that having him kill off Lila is having him destroy the most amoral portion of himself. He tells her "we're the same," but it's not as though that's just bullshit to get her guard down. He knows it, he believes it, and it's part of why she has to die.

I thought last night was kinda weak.

spoiler (click to show/hide)
More contrived marriage drama ::), Latin love subplot resurrected ::), and the lame twist that probably ends with Reporter Girl being the one that shot Lundy and Deb. Also, some of the stuff felt like retreads of old plot lines, like Dexter going out of town on vacation with a "friend", and Quinn continuing to fill Doakes' role of suspicious coworker -- but maybe I'm stretching here.

On the other hand, Lithgow was tremendous as usual, and I guess not every episode can be a winner. Maybe I've just been spoiled by all the strong endings this season has had.

edit: I just saw the promo for next episode. Rita cheating with neighbor guy? Seriously? The rest looks pretty sweet, though

You don't find it contrived that Dexter is somehow connected to every antagonist in every season? Or how he conveniently murdered the brother of a DA that not only has personal history with his co-workers, but turns out to be a budding serial killer?

Not all contrived plot twists are created equal.

Some are better, some are worse. Optimo is reaching with his defense of the series. I can at least appreciate the honest of someone saying, "I do not care for this particular contrived plot twist!" rather than a pretty thin defense of a series that has continued to connect every possible character together in pretty contrived ways.

My feeling is like Cajole, it is what it is. It'd be like saying, "I wish they didn't do a biopsy on this episode of House!"

I acknowledge that the series is abundant with fabricated coincidences, I just think that this particular one is way more flimsy and aggravating than the rest, especially because it's so game-changing. It's not like I'm crying about how this has ruined the whole season, but it is pretty lame.

I like the first two seasons the best, but I don't think there is a huge dropoff between those two and third and fourth seasons respectively. I have enjoyed this season more than the last, though. Lithgow just makes for a far more entertaining antagonist than Jimmy Smits.
